I'll have to give that a go haydent, I have very infrequent physical access to the box this card is in so it will be a few days. With the card you were able to unlock does it let you flash again, my card is weird in that I was able to up the clock limits with the first flash I tired but subsequent flashes have had no effect.

well ive never tried flashing again the one that unlocked as im too scared anything will happen to it so i dont touch it.

however after flashing my newer one and not getting the extra shaders i tried several other times to go back to backup but i could never flash again getting error 0FL01. ive read of this happening to others, and it seems they can become locked... but possible that bubblegum mod mentioned about above would get around this.

i did however after reading about it try with the gigabyte gpu flashing tool off their site for this card and it did say it worked , but i was essentially flashing the same rom, and it wont let me flash the backup as it says i have that already so i havnt really tested 100% it but it could work.

id love to unlock the shaders on my newer card but im pretty sure it has a different method of disabling them used (that rbe cant get around)  and others on the net have reported similiar problems where the flash works as normal but with no actual effect. and if i make a backup of the newely flashed bios with gpuz and open it in rbe it shows the mod enabled so it seems the flash worked.

@haydent

Thank you for the guide.  Let me give it a try and report back my findings!

good luck
50  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reference cards more valuable than non? on: July 25, 2011, 05:27:53 AM
because they can be easily flashed / unlocked / overclocked / underclocked / have backup bios

one advantage of non-ref can be better/quieter coolers

Like the title says, I have a Cooler Master HafX case which you would think would have good airflow but that isn't the case with 3 of these.  Having just running all 3 mining over night (at stock settings) I reached over 90C which is something I am not comfortable with.

Is there anything I can do to lower the temperatures on these other than not running the middle card?  I have thought that maybe removing the plastic cover on the heatsyncs might help since I have the little tunnel fans for the gpu installed and the one on the side of the case and since there is pretty much no room between the cards I think they aren't going that great of a job actually moving air in between them.  I'm not really sure what to do but I can't have it running at those temperatures all the time.

underclock the memory can help

You can see your bitcoin the next time you open the client. When a person sends you a bitcoin, it's actually sending the transaction to the bitcoin network. The network will validate the transaction and deposit the money on your address. It doesn't matter if you are online or not.

correct

Also have you tried using the TRIXX software. Most recent upgrade allows you to lower the mem clocks.

i have tried latest with no effect, it does not work SAPPHIRE_TriXX_Installer_v4.0_634459803839748647.2.exe

You can only underclock the memory on these 125Mhz lower than the clock speed, you can however overclock them passed the locked clocks using 11.6 drivers on linux and aticonfig/atitweak. I have one of these cards running 24/7 at 940Mhz and temps are 59-64 degrees with 60% fan, if I had a decent power supply I'm sure it would clock much higher.

this is not correct, as i mentioned you can use ati tray tools to set the clocks to whatever you want in windows.
55  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 1 BTC reward for Gigabyte 6950 unlocking guide on: July 25, 2011, 04:59:49 AM
that guide is not correct. dont flash a 6970 bios. especially on these cards, i have 2. they are non-ref and no bios switches, easier to brcik as no backup bios...

firstly let me say however this does not work in all cases, i have an older batch GB OC 6950 that unlocked but a newer batch one i bought since then did not (it flashed but shaders didnt change)

so what you need to do is this:

1- get gpuz and use it to make backup of bios.

2- then open it up in RBE (radeon bios editor) and go to 'additional features' tab change option 6950 -> 6970 for increase shader count. then save as new named bios rom file.

3- make a dos bootable usb (or whatever media) with atiflash.exe on it and the new modded bios file from step 2, assuming there is only one card execute following command: atiflash.exe -p 0 newromfile.rom
(this guide may help with this step : http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57750)

4- assuming step 3 worked and it says it flashed then you have chance of having extra shaders available on next boot. reboot and open gpuz to see count - 1536 is unlocked , 1408 is stock locked

5- to get lower mem clock you need to use ati tray tool, with that im able to run whatever i like. no other program can do this. at moment i can run 2 cards at 920/450 (1 card can run higher (upto 950)but i have two)

please ask if you have any more questions

these are great cards, and very quite, VERY! the best bit for me. hopefully you can unlock your shaders too.

this is my guide i just wrote for you now, not copied.

i can now lower my mem all the way down with atitray tools (both of which where pretty much factory locked) gigabyte 6950 oc
57  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: memory doesn't stay underclocked when under load on: July 23, 2011, 08:05:07 AM
well somehow i totally corrupted my CCC , and had to uninstall that bit to even start windows without it crashing with artefacts....

so no i just use atitray which is fine for the job instead.

going from 1250 to 405 mhz dropped my two cards from 78 to 73 & 74 to 69

and now i cant go 400 or less without it dying from artefacts and freeze.

but i run a bit higher around 450 as it actually lets me run a higher core clock.
58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: memory doesn't stay underclocked when under load on: July 23, 2011, 04:18:52 AM
Dont give up before trying ati tray tools. That worked for me and now I can set gpu/mem clocks to anything. For some reason voltage settings doesnt work for me even with ati tray tools, but 6970's bios default(1.175v) is enought. Running my asus 6950 @ full shaders and 900/150 MHz.

wow, thankyou so much ! id used atitraytools years ago. it actually works a treat ! after disabling clocking limits in advanced option i could go all the way down!

got down to 50mhz memory, and realised it was affecting my hash rate so i went back up to 200-300 where i still get full hash rate.
i will post more details about temperature difference and core oc advantage soon as i was going to with clocktweak but i wont be using that now....

thanks again !  Wink

ok quick report on lower limit. 775 was as i could go b4 it just jumps back up to 1250. (more details later)

also i could keep executing just the last command by itself once the first 2 of 3 had been run the first times.
60  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: memory doesn't stay underclocked when under load on: July 22, 2011, 12:04:50 PM
ok so i admit i had my hopes up but still same thing, can clock up but not down ... ;(

above 1250 has effect, below it does not.

clocktweak.exe -y -a 0 -m 1250

ive been able to underclock the mem only with racerX (same author as RBE) but the GPU becomes locked at 500, so no good either, but shows me there is some possibility of lowering the mem clock with these cards.

did you use this?

Code:
clocktweak.exe -y -a 0 -m 100 --memlevel0
clocktweak.exe -y -a 0 -m 200 --memlevel2
clocktweak.exe -y -a 0 -m 800

with my cards, i need to set the memlevels individually.

wow it actually worked (executing the 3 commands sequentially) omg! (except i imagine you ment -memlevel instead of --, and also level1 instead of 2)

but hey, ill give it more a go see how low i can get and the temp core oc differences and post back.  Cheesy
