401  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Best way to acquire bitcoins if your under 18? Harder than you think :/ on: July 24, 2012, 11:34:19 AM
Haha, woah. Just trying to fix my problem. They might be the obvious methods but im looking for a fast easy method. Didnt know that put me in the possible scammers category. I mean, is that what the majority of people do on here? The way everyone talks about scamming here makes it sound like the odds of someone mugging me and taking my cash are a one one trillionths to a trillion compared to getting scammed for my bitcoins.

Scamming in the bitcoin world is much more probable than getting smuggled, robbed etc in "real world". If you scam/phish anonymously, there is very little risk involved, With physical robbery, the criminal takes huge risks, if you start to think about it.

Anonymous SIM isn't enough. You want a clean phone, too.

I don't know much about this, but what do you mean with a clean phone? Last time I bought an extra phone with 20 eur, cash, from a small store, Germany. No questions asked. I see no way to trace the phone back to me. But maybe in some other countries they ask papers even for phone purchases?
403  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Best way to acquire bitcoins if your under 18? Harder than you think :/ on: July 24, 2012, 10:57:15 AM
SEPA takes usually takes few days to clear, and I doubt that the OP even is from europe... In fact it seems sounds like that he is just some phisher/scammer, and therefore the obvious methods don't suit him  Grin

(No offence, there just are lots of scammers/phishers in the bitcoin "community", and the problems they have seem to be similar to the OP...)

Good Smiley
Any news about the translation system?

We still need to clean some stuff before we can start translating the site. It could be translation-ready in about a week.
405  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How can I anonymously and most conveniently turn Bitcoins into cash, preferrably on: July 24, 2012, 10:13:32 AM
localbitcoins.com sounds like a great idea, but SMS is not really suitable for someone requiring anonimity?
Ditch SMS and use a web-based smartphone app instead. That'll at least keep things anonymous until the legal eagles make you keep personally-identifiable records of all transactions...

At least where I live it is very easy to get anonymous pre-paid SIM card for phones. Also teh SMS stuff isn't required, it is just made to make the whole process easier. You don't have to use it. You can just rely on emails.

You have to be careful if you're holding other peoples money that your security is very good. Whilst convenient in some ways, I will not be using the escrow system for my own trades. Direct person to person trading is still the way to go.

Optimally we are holding the money only a short amount of time at a time. Therefore it should be a lot less risky than for example a traditional exchange, which holds the money for much longer periods.

Also, we are developing this now pretty much full time, testing it continuously and carefully. Of course it is your decision if you decide to trust us or not. The escrow process is optional to use, but it should make the whole exchange process a whole lot of easier & faster.

Edit: just to note, there are lots of web sites already, which people actively use, which have much higher risk profile than this service in my opinion. Eg. mining pools, web wallets, gambling sites.

localbitcoins.com - solution to all of the worlds problems Wink

(if there are no traders in your area, just set up an advertisement, maybe someone will contact you soon)
408  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: July 24, 2012, 08:38:53 AM
New realization: the buyer doesn't even need phone, she can just write the escrow code down to paper. The seller receives the escrow code as well to her phone. She can just show the code to the buyer, and this way prove that the escrow has been released  Smiley

411  Economy / Services / [8btc bounty] visualize localbitcoins.com escrow process on: July 24, 2012, 07:49:25 AM
Recently we made a feature to release escrow using SMS message. This makes it possible to do bitcoin cash transactions without internet connection - less hassle.

We will offer 8btc for the best visualization of the following processes. Eg. stick-figure visualization, or anything else, you can use your imagination Smiley Extra tip will be provided if you invent something funny.

For the seller, the process is following

1. Offer
2. Fund the escrow, get SMS code & number, write them down to your phone
3. Meet & receive the escrow
4. Send the release SMS message
5. Both receive confirmation SMS (if they have provided phone numbers)
6. Everybody is happy, bitcoins transfered to buyer

For the buyer:

1. Offer
2. Take down or memorize secret escrow code
3. Meet & give cash
4. Receive SMS message from localbitcoins with the secret escrow code
5. Happy, bitcoins transfered

So there is 2 codes, one with you can release the SMS, and other by receiving it from localbitcoins you are sure that the escrow is released.

Rules: just put your result to this thread, if I find it satisfactory, I will send the 8btc to you. I can send it to only one person, so also speed matters Smiley

We are on it, thanks for notifying, for some reason we missed it Smiley

Now it is also possible to release escrow using SMS message. This makes it possible to do bitcoin cash transactions without internet connection - less hassle.

For the seller, the process is following

1. Offer
2. Fund the escrow, get SMS code & number, write them down to your phone
3. Meet & receive the escrow
4. Send the release SMS message
5. Both receive confirmation SMS (if they have provided phone numbers)
6. Everybody is happy, bitcoins transfered to buyer

For the buyer:

1. Offer
2. Take down or memorize secret escrow code
3. Meet & give cash
4. Receive SMS message from localbitcoins with the secret escrow code
5. Happy, bitcoins transfered

So there is 2 codes, one with you can release the SMS, and other by receiving it from localbitcoins you are sure that the escrow is released.

Any feedback very welcome Smiley

Can you make add a different nickname that will be show on seller/buyer advertisement?
I want a different nickname from the one that I use to login.

Hmm, do you mean that you would need like a separate "business name", or would it be sufficient for you if you could login with email? Or are you worried about security?

5. buyer gets escrow release confirmation with SMS, with secret escrow code

Whats to stop the seller from forging the escrow SMS? That's very easy to do.

The secret escrow code. The seller can't know this, unless the buyer tells it to the seller. The code is always in the SMS.
415  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How can I anonymously and most conveniently turn Bitcoins into cash, preferrably on: July 23, 2012, 04:15:45 PM
We are working really hard with localbitcoins.com, which aims to be best site for buying and selling bitcoins with cash, locally.

Just today we updated the site, now we have an escrow feature with SMS notification, worldwide. This makes the whole process easier:

1. buyer puts the amount he wants to buy, bitcoin address and phone number for sms notification, gets secret escrow code
2. buyer and seller meet at internet cafe, only seller has internet
3. buyer gives cash to seller
4. seller releases escrow via internet
5. buyer gets escrow release confirmation with SMS, with secret escrow code

We are working with the site full time. Next we are going to develop a feature, which allows releasing the escrow with SMS, which enables bitcoin cash transactions without internet access (both buyer and seller need only SMS-enabled phone).

All feedback welcome!

Bitcoin Killer App: Ponzi Schemes

Yep, it is what people really want. People don't want to invest in interesting startups, who build products with long-term focus. They want to risk their life savings with gambling and ponzi schemes. Nothing wrong with that, people will get what they want  Grin
417  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: July 23, 2012, 06:15:51 AM

How about remembering addresses that you have sent to?  That would be useful for recurring payments, without having to rescan a bar code each time.

I will implement this feature at some point, thanks for the suggestion.
418  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Bitcoin really need an ATM? on: July 22, 2012, 09:28:59 PM
I think vending machine supplied bitcoins could be a great "entry point" to people, just to get some bitcoins and play with them, try out how they work etc. There already was this some days ago:

http://blog.maschinenraum.tk/2012/07/15/bitcoin-vending-machine-exchange-euro-coins-for-bitcoin-wallets/

After this I realized that you can actually use any kind of vending machine as a bitcoin machine, with a little tuning. Maybe condom vending machines are the most easy. They are also very cheap, you can get used ones from ebay.

Inspired by these, I developed a new feature to easywallet.org - coupons. These can be nominated in fiat currency, and they are converted to bitcoins at the time of redeem. This removes exchange rate risk from such machines.

https://easywallet.org/coupons

This means, that an user with iPhone or android phone can buy the bitcoins from the machine, redeem the coupon using QR code, and start sending/using the bitcoins within minutes from his/her phone.

Currently only the basic functionality is there (you have to print the coupons yourself if you want to use them). Our designer is working for coupon desing.

420  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: July 19, 2012, 04:04:15 PM
I still am confused on the reason I got the error when trying to send the full amount as shown in my balance.  It almost looks like it is the result of a rounding issue ... where I had exactly 0.005, the site shows 0.005000  but I could only spend 0.004999 perhaps?   You aren't storing amounts as floats by chance, are you?

No, I am not using floats.

The problem was that I had function currency2btc(amount, currency), which threw error if the incoming currency was btc. I had forgot to update this fix to the production server, and had not tested the production code with btc nominated coupons. You happened to create btc

[Edit: An one more question, when I create a coupon for USD, or any other of the non-BTC currency options, what conversion rate is used, and when?]

At the time of redeeming, 24h weighted averages from bitcoincharts.com (the same exchange rates are used everywhere on easywallet).

These are bearer instruments, where the first to redeem the code gets the funds.  This is no different from Mt. Gox redeemable codes, Bitstamp coupons, VouchX vouchers, etc.,

The first to redeem the code doesn't necessarily get the funds, if the issuer doesn't have enough funds in his wallet.

You can create lots of easywallet.org coupons, withdraw your funds from easywallet, and then the coupons are worthless and can't be redeemed.

On other exchanges, the funds are taken from your account when you create the coupon. In easywallet.org the funds are taken at the time of redeem.

This is because I want to be able to nominate coupons in any currencies, while actually only handling bitcoins. Easywallet.org does not handle any other currencies than bitcoins, it is impossible for us to create "hard coupons" nominated in EUR/USD/etc.

(I need a way to make explaining this simpler...)
