405  Economy / Speculation / Re: Nice terror attack effect on bitcoin? on: July 16, 2016, 12:09:51 AM
Bitcoin don't seem to care about the coup attempt in Turkey either...
Why would it care?  Why would any world news affect the price of bitcoin?  Bitcoin isn't a safe-haven asset.  Look at the price today compared to two months ago--we went from 420 to over 700 very quickly, and that isn't safe.  It could easily have gone the other way.  Besides, everyone knows what gold is and have a good idea that it's a place to park money in turbulent times.  Not a hell of a lot of people know or care about bitcoin.  And most of the ones who do are smoking cigarettes in the dark.

In terms of "safe-haven assets", your points are valid.

However, a general de-stabilisation of governments and/or currency could easily have a positive effect on Bitcoin value. One historical example of this would be Cyprus - I doubt many Cypriots were actually transferring their wealth into Bitcoin, but the idea that an unstable economy could confiscate its citizens funds resulted globally in other people pushing the price up.

And with a country like Turkey, NATO member and land-link to the turbulent Middle East, things could cause more of a dynamic.
406  Other / Politics & Society / Re: TURKEY COUP ATTEMPT on: July 16, 2016, 12:02:01 AM

@protokol

Yeah, but turkey is a nato member state and additionaly has strong political and economical links with the eu. That would be on a whole new level.

I agree, and I have no evidence for foreign involvement, just a hunch.

My comment earlier was mainly a follow-on in my agreement that a successful coup would not create an "islamic state ruled by the military" but, as you said, the opposite.

This would IMO greatly benefit the West, which is why I speculate western involvement.

Just heard that the military has complete control of Turkey now. General is being held hostage.
All this happening within last 24 hours is very disturbing.
So does this indeed mean that Turkey will become an islamic state ruled by the Turkish army?

No the opposite.

Yes, exactly this. The Turkish army are staging this coup in opposition to Erdogans radical muslim values, they generally favour secularism and democracy. This is why I think the US and/or the EU may have something to do with it.

The West is on the side of the military here.

I dont know supporting a military coup in an allied nation is something ridiculous ugh....

Dont forget that erdogan was voted in by majority of the turks (even though there voting laws are hard for the opposition)

It seems ridiculous, but the West was supporting Syrian rebels only a couple of years ago, in their fight against Al-Assad. It's not that out of the ordinary.

edit: not an allied nation, but still noteworthy.

The Police are also being targeted by the military as the police are traditionally Erdogan supporters and hold his extreme values. That is the reason for the gunfights and clashes between these two groups.

410  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Will there still be terrorism from the same groups in 20 years? on: July 15, 2016, 11:24:45 PM
Don't mean to be pessimistic, but I think it will get worse.

The new age of technology has made terrorist acts very likely to be filmed on mobile phones/cameras and instantly uploaded and shared between millions on the internet (or even streamed live).

IMO this has two main downsides:

Firstly it helps the terrorists by broadcasting their actions instantly, and globally, making them think they are doing a more effective job (maybe it makes them feel like better "martyrs"), and also makes others more likely to engage in terrorist acts.

Secondly it turns public opinion against the religions that these terrorists claim to follow, and against their races (which at the moment tend to be Middle-Eastern or North African). This causes an uprising in public support for far-right wing parties/government in Western countries, and hatred and animosity to these religions and races in general.

These two aspects of new technology cause a feedback loop that just seems to make the problem worse.

If only these fucking lunatics would stop this shit maybe we could all just get along??  Roll Eyes

I wonder who's helping the military in Turkey? I know there's been many coups in the last 50 years, but this seems serious.

I reckon American agencies such as the CIA have something to do with this, maybe even EU agencies?

I have no evidence, but a military takeover of Turkey and the overthrow of Erdogan would be beneficial for America and the EU, and both have the power to influence this sort of action...

EDIT: I don't mean direct help such as troops/tanks, more like indirect communications. Statements made to the military commanders such as: "If you stage a coup, the West will support you in overthrowing Erdogan".

If the resurrected Jesus was just a look-alike, 100% of the New Testament could be wrong.

And seeing as no talking snake has ever been recorded, much of the Old Testament could be wrong as well.

You understand how the concept of Occam's Razor works?

No. I forgot. Because it is simply a piece of clever garbage to take your focus off whatever you are talking about.

The point is that the age of the universe is unknown scientifically.

Cool

It is the exact opposite of "clever garbage to take your focus off whatever you're taking about". In fact it suggests we focus on what we do know, and avoid complicating problems by introducing additional unknown variables to explain them.

And yes, there is compelling evidence of the scientifically calculated age of the universe, look up the cosmic microwave background.

More cosmic drivel.    Cool

The same cosmic drivel that allows you to see things, watch TV, listen to the radio, take x-rays, reheat your food and ironically, type what you just typed? The electromagnetic spectrum, that cosmic drivel?

Yeah I watched 10mins of that video, and that guy is, in my opinion, madder than a box of frogs.

I think it's fair to say I won't believe a single thing he says unless it's backed up by at least one textual source. He is a batshit mentalist.

Or maybe I'm part of the Owl freemason club, and this post is all just obfuscating the truth... WooOooooh.

I'm not a flat-Earther, but I questioned the recent pics when they first came in, now confirmed. Odd!

Is there a non-conspiritard version of that, i.e. maybe a written article sourcing the photographs...

rather than a 25 minute YouTube video of a shouty man hosted by a dodgy looking fringe site throwing ads and sponsored content at me.

Not saying it's wrong, just that alarm bells are ringing.

I can't make up my mind who's more deluded. Flat earth people or 6000 year old young earth people.

Gasp! Maybe there's a few oddballs out there that believe both at the same time!

 Cheesy

It's the Big Bang people, and those that believe the universe is billions of years old, hands down, who are most deluded. They believe is things that even their founding scientists say are not factual.

Cool

What's your view on Occam's Razor?

Just as an example, let's take your hypothesis that carbon 14 decayed at a faster rate in the past than it does today. That would explain a 6,000 year old Earth, right?

But without any evidence that this is the case, it's not a valid rebuttal of carbon dating, according to Occam's Razor. You're simply thinking of ways which validate your beliefs, with no supporting evidence.

I could just say "well that Jesus guy that was supposedly resurrected and walked out of the cave, he was just a look-alike who pretended to be the real Jesus, the real one never came back to life." The argument has just as much validity as the carbon dating rebuttal.

(I know C14 dating isn't accurate to billions of years, but it does provide compelling evidence against a 6,000 year old Earth.)

If there was absolutely not one atom of C-14 in the atmosphere prior to 5,000 years ago, 100% of our carbon dating that we interpret to be older than 5,000-year-old would be wrong. And much of our dating AFTER 5,000 years would be wrong, as well.

Nobody knows when C-14 came into being in the atmosphere. It's all guesswork.

Cool

If the resurrected Jesus was just a look-alike, 100% of the New Testament could be wrong.

And seeing as no talking snake has ever been recorded, much of the Old Testament could be wrong as well.
