Crucially, the would-be assassin also requests payment in an experimental new internet-based currency called Bitcoin, which uses the same sort of peer-to-peer software employed by digital video pirates to manage transactions and issue payments away from the watchful eye of any central fiscal authority.

alcohol works but it doesn't really dissolve the TIM.

If found this works good.  Yes a ripoff @ $7 for small bottle (good for 10 GPU at least) but it works very well.

For cleaning up bad thermal paste jobs which got some of the resistors I have found using the #1 cleaner in the link above, let it dissolve some of the thermal paste, mop it up with qtips.  It will take 3 or 4 passes but you can get any surface perfectly clean.
Not cheap, but it looks like what I need. I'll probably get some, since I am going to be re-pasting a dozen cards. Also, I had a tube of AS5 laying around so I was using that, but I might as well get something better at the same time. I saw recently a good comparison of thermal compounds, and I think the Tuniq TX4 came out on top.

I have some extremely loud and high velocity 120mm Delta fans that are like 1.5 inch thick and dangerous to operate. Came out of an old PSU. Wonder where I can order more in bulk - sc8nt4u's fans might work, but I assume they are standard thickness of about 3/4 inch and not as high velocity/CFM. Also, since the card's built in fans are being removed, it is imperative that my external fans are redundant and reliable.

BTW - when cleaning off old thermal paste, it is really hard to remove it from around the little resistors around the GPU core. Is there any kind of solvent that will remove it without damaging the GPU? Alcohol perhaps? I'm guessing the old stuff isn't conductive, since it was slathered like peanut butter all over the entire GPU including the little resistors.

I've just been reading down the list again, and I know what all of them are except for the Boston Baked Beans - are those real baked beans, or are they some candy that I have never heard of? NVM, just googled them.

Also, the orange slices - is that candied orange, or is it the spherical chocolate oranges?

Atlas, you are a brain fart. stfu

The ID requirement for GLBSE is optional, and is only for those that are offering something, not for buyers. To prevent the scammers that were seen in 1.0, 2.0 offers ID verification which will then mark the account verified. Those that choose not to send ID will still be allowed, but will not be marked trusted. This is my understanding of the changes that Nefario is implementing, and they are positive changes.

Went very well, Yubikey code received, thanks Smiley

+1 for MysteryMiner rep.

Then when I read some users' experiences of the yubikey, I'm a bit scared of this,
probably I'll break it accidentally, or something similar,
and then goodbye my mtGox -account  Tongue
Maybe I will donate the code to someone  Roll Eyes

They are pretty much unbreakable, unless you crunch them with pliers or something. I usually hang my entire keyring of 20+ keys off of it when it is connected to my computer, and I fear for the USB port more than the Yubikey.
Put it on your keyring, then you shouldn't lose it.

Make sure you are taking depth into account, and not just multiplying x coins by y current rate. http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com/ has a good depth calculator, just type in the number of coins to sell, and it will tell you how much USD you would actually get.

If you read Ufasoft miners /? you see -t 0 is cpu disabled. Then you can leave -i off must be t not T as T is temperature.
If you find this worth something send some coin my way ( 1NwkQdmomQPLtdes5KuZhB1D22p7ZGRy4p )
Ehh, how the heck could I have missed that. Thanks for the info - I was able to start it with
Code:
bitcoin-miner-64.exe -t 0 -o http://herp:derp@hurr.durr:8332
which made it start and then wait for me to connect the Single. It said it was mining on the CPU, but the counter showed 0khash and the CPU usage was 0. As soon as I plugged in the single, it detected it and started mining.

How many GPU's are you hoping to use in this box?
As many as I can cram in... I count 18 slots, which gives me 36 GPUs IF I am able to use all the slots, and IF I can get software to support them. At least one, and maybe even 2 of the slots appear to be "reserved" or may require an expansion board in order to be useable. The other 16 are fair game though. Dual GPU cards would then mean 32 GPUs total.

I have been experimenting with removing the plastic shroud on my 5870s - as you may know, 5870s (and most other graphics cards) fit very close together if you use adjacent slots. There is usually no gap to speak of, which makes airflow impossible unless you use shims to wedge the cards apart. When the plastic is removed, there is tons of space between the cards. See pic:

I have discovered that doing this leaves enough of a gap to fit in an x16 extender, which means that I could mount 8 cards directly to the board, and an additional 8 to 10 cards one level up via x16 extenders, double stacker style. Combined with some special cooling apparatus, this should allow me to air cool all the cards, while still fitting within a 7 or 8 U chassis.
4132  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Modding a reference bracket to be a high-flow bracket? on: March 24, 2012, 09:03:18 PM
I just discovered that for high density applications, you can remove the plastic shroud and the blower fan and still have the heatsink attached, making multiple cards fit side-by-side much better, and allowing you to control airflow far more easily. The heatsink under the plastic is basically the same as the FirePro Passive cards meant for servers, and the only remaining issue is the DVI ports getting in the way. Might have to create a small bit of plastic to channel the airflow better around the DVI ports.

Very good discovery.

Can you take the shroud off without taking off the GPU and needing to reapply thermal paste etc. ?

No, but it has given me the opportunity to re-paste them. They will probably run several degrees cooler now - the gorilla that applied the paste at the factory dumped on half a gallon each, so I am replacing it with "just enough" Arctic Silver 5. Pic with shroud removed:

When modded like that, they fit side-by-side with a gap for airflow, whereas previously there would have been no gap at all and they would have been really squashed.
You will need to provide proper external cooling though, leaving the fan on will not work since the shroud directs the airflow across the heatsink. Like one of these maybe:

I might correct that it's ~85W for 832MH/s. Of course, the board itself consumes 71-72W, but the inefficiency of the PSU
takes up to ~85W. One could use a central PSU for multiple singles, with a higher efficiency...

All the best,
I was referring to the aftermarket PSU he hooked up, not the included adapters. The PSU he has should be more efficient than the adapters, but does not appear to be. The adapters are approximately 84% efficient.
4134  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Rig Box on: March 24, 2012, 03:23:56 AM
By the way. The whole PSU to power them all is not as good of idea as I had though it would be. This is a Gold PSU and I am still using about 20 to maybe 30 watts more than I was with the power bricks. Go figure. The PSU is a very reliable power source though. those cheap power bricks will probably not last long. Nice not having 10 of them plugged in anymore too.
What PSU is it?

Its powering 10 singles. 860 watts for the singles and the PSU. The hub and the laptop are on another circuit. They are using about 20 watts.

CoolMax ZPG 1200

I bought this one because I have 4 more on the way and wanted it to power them all.

With the 10 singles with the power bricks and the laptop and the hub I was pulling 850 watts total.

Then theres the $200 PSU I bought and all the connectors. I'd say it is not a good financial investment but it did clear up a lot of space.
By my calculations, that's only 83% efficient at 60% load, far less than the standard Gold rating of 90% at 50%. Either it has a really odd curve, or something else doesn't add up. I couldn't find that exact model on Ecova's site either.
4135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to make merchants aware of Bitcoins advantages? on: March 24, 2012, 03:05:19 AM
You likely can increase adoption by explaining to them how they can do everything right and then still have their funds seized by Mt.Gox for totally undefined "suspicious activity" which is completely impossible for them to prevent.

Are you just being a wise ass or are you serious? You don’t think we should be attempting to increase awareness because MtGox sucks?
Going along with my previous statement regarding fees, you could push Bit-Pay, which hasn't really had such issues and is business oriented. To avoid bringing new business converts too far outside their comfort zone by eliminating the fee completely, you could show them that there is a way to do it for a reduced fee, which in some cases may be substantially reduced (compare with credit cards for instance), but not gone.

Although I have not experienced Bit-Pay from a business owner's perspective, I'd bet that they would have less of a support backlog and noob agents problem compared to MtGox. MtGox's merchant solution is cheap, but a business owner wants to get answers right away if there is possibly a problem, and I don't know that I would want to rely on MtGox for that. In addition, MtGox's merchant solution was recently bolted on to the back of their exchange API, and Bit-Pay have been doing only a merchant solution since their inception.

I wonder if the 5V 3.3V and negative rails are just burning power. I see you have a USB hub maybe run it off your 5V line if you haven't already it may cause less wasted power. I am assuming that the voltage rails use some power just sitting there. There could be other issues. I wish I could come up with something the 3.3V would be good for. I was hoping to do the same kind of thing when I get a couple. I am sad to hear efficiency seems to suffer.
You might be able to fix that by using the PSU to power the host system, and the host could be some kind of cheap mini-itx board. But I see 8 Singles, which should equate to about 560 watts DC. If the PSU is a 600 watt model, I wouldn't expect it to be within 90% efficiency at so close to maximum load. However I'm not sure what its rating is. Do you have the make and model?
4137  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt Gox thinks it's the Fed. Freezes acc based on "tainted" coins. on: March 24, 2012, 02:51:23 AM
That is the whole point.  We don't know.

If Mt.Gox policy was "we will freeze account and seek account information when facing court order or legislative requirement" we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

there policy is they will freeze accounts which may seem suspicious based on whatever they feel is suspicious and release funds based on whatever they decide is good enough.

The first is called due process, the second is called bullshit.
I cede to you that that policy is BS, and should be changed to how you suggest above.

I learned that McDonalds will still charge you $6 for a Fillet-o-fish meal on $1.50 Fillet-o-fish friday.

When will you learn their fish-squares are one of the most disappointing items on the menu?
Another total ripoff is the little "chicken" bite things. They are mostly "bite" (bread), and hardly any chicken at all. Also, a "McDouble" is cheaper than a standard double cheeseburger, but appears to be the same thing. WTF?
