Also, in case you don't know C either, you should really consider reading 'The C programming language', from Kernighan and Richie.  It's a must.

C style is very different from C++ style. It's good to learn, but I'd learn C++ first.

I recommend C++ Primer by Stanley B. Lippman.
4265  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY 300 BTC] Make a bitcointalk forum plugin to allow tipping via BTC on: December 19, 2012, 01:14:31 AM

Sounds mostly good.

You need to give people the option of opting out of PMs when they receive donations. Otherwise some people will be annoyed, especially when they get PMs for very small tips.

I'd prefer all of the actual tipping stuff to be done on your site, not through JavaScript stuff on this site.

Tipping yourself is not possible the tip link won't show on posts that are your own. And even if you try to bypass that we can do an extra check on the server side since we have the internal forum id.

This alone won't prevent people from tipping themselves. Are you also going to take a fee?
4266  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin design contract on: December 17, 2012, 04:40:10 PM
Then Bitcoin is reversible if/when the elites decide a person isn't being secure enough.

It wouldn't be reversible. The money just becomes unspendable. I don't advocate recycling the lost coins.

If 500 tons of gold were lost at the bottom of the ocean for many years and the loss of this gold therefore gets factored into the gold price, I think that gold would be a better currency if the lost gold is never found because the price would then be more stable. No one is hurt if the gold isn't found because it's already lost. Preventing obviously-lost money from being found isn't possible with gold, but it is possible (backward-compatible, even) with Bitcoin.

They day that happens is the day I am done with Bitcoin.  The social contract (written or otherwise) has been broken.

Your view on what the "social contract" guarantees is different than the views of me, gmaxwell, and Meni. This conflict of opinions is exactly why an explicit contract is needed: to resolve conflicts of this sort and to inform Bitcoin users about exactly which guarantees "the Bitcoin network" will always provide.

How I understand theymos' suggestion is to translate the contract contained in the code into a more simple, human language that anyone can understand and I fully support it.\

This is part of it, though I also want to specify which major changes are "allowed" to the core Bitcoin design in the future. Obviously this contract can't be enforced by the network, but it would be useful to write it down to make sure that all developers and users are on the same page.
4267  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin design contract on: December 17, 2012, 01:24:40 PM
The core design is anything that doesn't involve a hard-fork. So...
yes if it ever happens.

Increasing precision or adjusting the subsidy rules at all are certainly hard-fork changes...

It won't increase the supply any more than the original limit, and in any case, most proposals for "expiring" old coins involve sending them to miners, ie, randomly distributing them according to computer power, which is exactly what will happen if ECDSA is ever broken.

Redistributing lost coins in any way doesn't affect the overall money supply, but it would greatly increase the supply in circulation. The fact that lost coins are lost forever is maybe something that should be a guarantee of the system (where possible). If lost coins can eventually be spent through either weak crypto or intentional changes, this should at least be explicitly stated so that people don't rely on lost coins being lost when making long-term predictions.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and have recently commented about it here, completely oblivious to this post of yours. Talk about coincidence.

Wow, that is a strange coincidence!

In this context it should be clarified what a "bitcoin" is. A "split" where all bitcoin balances are multiplied by 1000 (so there are now 21B coins; technically, it just means the word "bitcoin" is now used to denote 100,000 satoshis) is not against the core design and can be considered (not saying it's a good idea).

Agreed.
4268  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin design contract on: December 17, 2012, 04:10:04 AM
Quote from: satoshi
The nature of Bitcoin is such that once version 0.1 was released, the core design was set in stone for the rest of its lifetime.

What exactly is the "core design", though? Can apparently-lost coins expire at some point? Can they be "recycled". Can the subsidy algorithm change as long as there are always fewer than 21 million bitcoins? If precision is increased, should this also increase the BTC limit slightly to be consistent with the current right-shift-based subsidy code? Etc.

To make this stuff clear, I think that an explicit "Bitcoin contract" should be written and included in all Bitcoin clients which says exactly what properties are guaranteed by the Bitcoin network. For example, there should certainly be no more than 21 million bitcoins in existence at any one time. If anyone tries to change these guaranteed properties (via a BIP, for example), it will be easy to point to the Bitcoin contract and say that any network with the proposed changes would not be Bitcoin.

One example of where this would be especially useful: It is likely that at some point ECDSA will be weakened and everyone will need to send their BTC to different addresses that use different signing algorithms. However, lost coins will not be moved, and when ECDSA is finally broken, these lost coins will be spent by random people. This will increase supply a lot, perhaps more than should be allowed. Perhaps old coins should be "expired" before this can happen. But does expiring coins violate the Bitcoin core design? A contract should exist to solve conflicts of this kind.

4271  Other / Off-topic / Re: Silk Road seller acc now cost ~ 500$ on: December 15, 2012, 08:35:59 AM
I'd probably make seller accounts cheap. Sellers are what make the site useful, and they take most of the risk. If more revenue is needed, transaction fees would be a better place to get it.

But running a site like Silk Road is incredibly risky even with Tor, so they can charge whatever fees they want without having to worry too much about competition.

I gave Hal a VIP tag even though he didn't donate because he is nearly as much of a Bitcoin legend as Satoshi IMO. He received the first-ever Bitcoin transaction, and he's been contributing to Bitcoin since before 0.1 was released.

4274  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 63 on: December 14, 2012, 02:42:34 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

Moving them to the German off-topic section was a mistake. It's easy to pick the wrong section named "Off-topic" when moving. This has happened several times before. I just renamed the German off-topic section to make this less likely in the future.

If you think that DiabloD3 should not have moved these topics from Mining at all, create another topic about that. I'm suspicious of this action, though I don't follow the mining scene at all, so I don't know if it was appropriate.

By the way, I think that TheBible is an alt of Matthew N. Wright based on IP logs. Funny how Matthew is now worse than Atlas.

The current CAPTCHA system was custom-modified by Satoshi and is probably just as good as notCaptcha at confusing bots. (Mostly because systems like notCaptcha rely more on obscurity than security.)

1. Lots of threads on bitcoin discussion are being moved to unrelated boards that no one reads

Hopefully this will get people to read those sections.

2. Having a newbie section is derogatory, people should be able to post where they like. Registering an account is inconvenient enough without having to satisfy some random admin.

I've always really disliked the newbie restrictions. It significantly reduces the quality of the entire community IMO because there are no "drive-by contributors" who would otherwise make up a large percentage of the community. However, the moderation tools currently available aren't good enough to protect the community if there were no newbie restrictions. In particular, at least these features are needed:
- A much better report system. (Currently, moderators just receive reports via email, which is terrible.)
- Better CAPTCHAs for newbies. Many bots are able to defeat the current CAPTCHAs.
- A way to require that newbies from certain IPs must have their posts approved by moderators. (Spam and proxy IPs would be given this treatment.)
- A page like this that shows only posts by newbies, so moderators and other helpful people can patrol newbie posts.
4280  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY 300 BTC] Make a bitcointalk forum plugin to allow tipping via BTC on: December 12, 2012, 06:22:40 PM
Agreed about requirements, but why would you ever want to tip somebody less than 1 satoshi? That level of value is in the extreme-micropayment range, if I got a 1 satoshi tip I'd take it as an insult!

Do tips really need to double as a reputation system? The goal is to encourage posters to post more, right, not act as a publicly visible measure of reliability. If you just don't display the total amount of tips gathered by a user, or just show a list of usernames that pressed the tip button on a post, then the issue of tipping yourself goes away.

If someone sends 1 satoshi and the tipping service charges a fee, the recipient will get less than 1 satoshi. Then they might send that amount on to someone else. That's one possibility. I don't know how common that'd be.

I guess I'm not sure what the goal is. Reddit's bitcointip posts whenever someone gets a tip, which advertises the tipping system and gets people excited about Bitcoin. I was thinking that having a public tally of tips would get people interested in a similar way.
