441  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum Casper on: August 20, 2018, 11:00:24 AM
First of all, let's see where actually Casper currently is. In spite of the announced switch to Casper's PoS protocol, it's nowhere to be seen. From a recent news article:
Quote
However, the much-awaited Casper update is unlikely to be deployed until mid-2019. Thus, the so-called difficulty bomb is indefinitely postponed and the supply cap for ether remains unknown – factors adding up to high inflation.
Source: https://cryptoslate.com/report-nearly-2-5-billion-paid-annually-to-ethereum-miners-eth-issuance-woes-continue/

In the meantime, scalability is not the only problem ETH has.

For example, as mentioned in the article, ETH's inflation rate is almost two times the inflation rate of BTC (and unlike what currently ETH has, the BTC inflation rate is projected to gradually go to zero). A part of the problem with ETH is the fact that there is no supply cap in the Ethereum system.

So if you ask me, I don't know if Casper will solve anything, because PoS is not the ideal consensus mechanism it is advertised to be. But they should certainly give it a try.

442  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How i can strat mining? on: August 20, 2018, 10:45:22 AM
How i can find out mineable coins and which are more profitable to mine? Please tell me what should i do now.
OP, you didn't tell us what kind of hardware you currently possess. One usually chooses the coins depending on the hardware one has. Or should we understand that you don't have any mining equipment at all and are looking to buy?

In general, as leonix007 already pointed out, mining is not that profitable today. Not nearly as profitable as it used to be. If you don't have any hardware and you are looking to buy, it might be a wiser move to use that money to buy crypto directly, rather than engaging in any mining activity in the first place.
443  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Baikal giant is down on: August 20, 2018, 10:28:37 AM
Here is a thought. Could it be related to Monero's hard fork? As far as I can tell, Baikal N giant is supposed to mine CryptoNight, but Monero has already hard-forked and changed the algo.

Anyhow, if you already have this model, you could potentially switch to mining other CryptoNight coins. I'm sure there are coins that are still running the old algo, like Electroneum for example.

Go to:

https://whattomine.com/calculators

enter the algo (CryptoNight) in the search box, and you will have a list of potential coins to mine.
444  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why does my eth went down? on: August 20, 2018, 07:58:20 AM
It definitely looks strange. Because, either you did some transactions on your own, or your account has been hacked. But then again, why would a hacker take just a fraction of your ETH? Usually they would empty the account to zero.

I suggest you to go to:

https://etherscan.io/

In the upper right corner you will find an empty field. Here you can enter your public key (ETH address, starting with 0x...) and click on GO. Then you can check the list of transactions related to your ETH address. This will give you more info about what could have happened.
445  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Merchants Adopting Coins on: August 19, 2018, 08:24:53 PM
If you asked me the same question one year ago, I would have said LTC was destined to fulfill that purpose. I really believed LTC is well suited for merchant payments due to its smaller fees, faster transaction times, and LN implementation. But now I'm not so sure any more. Monero has already shown its usefulness when it comes to totally anonymous payments, but I don't see it as being the main currency in merchant processors. Bitcoin is kind of reserved for larger payments, and alongside of it we definitely need a cryptocurrency for small and fast payments. IMO, it is still an open question about which one will dominate the retailers space.
446  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mastering blockchain - the free eBook on: August 19, 2018, 07:56:26 PM
Thanks Jet Cash for the tip. I have now downloaded the free copy. Glad I did, because judging from the table of contents, it's a real treat.

But I have to say I nearly missed it.  Because, when I first checked your post, I was under the impression that the giveaway was about "Mastering Bitcoin", not "Mastering Blockchain". They surely have similar titles.
447  Economy / Speculation / Re: A.I. and value of the Bitcoin! on: August 19, 2018, 06:19:26 PM
It's an interesting question. People who buy and sell on the market often behave irrationally, whereas artificial intelligence is supposed to operate on rational principles.

I think the price of bitcoin is still very volatile for A.I. It depends on a number of factors, including human psychology and crowd psychology. So I doubt AIs would be successful.

However, A.I.s are already being tested/used to predict the price movement in the stock market:

https://www.quora.com/How-accurate-are-the-stock-predictions-of-AI

So, who know, in a couple of years, when the price volatility is diminished, we may see A.I.s predicting bitcoin price movements.
448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Which Ethereum’s Layer 2 Scaling is most likely to get the most adoption? on: August 19, 2018, 06:02:52 PM
I'm not really familiar with the ETH Layer 2 scaling proposals, but one thing is for certain: they are all in their infancy.

State channels, plasma, sharding, they all have yet to prove themselves in practice.

For example, state channels are very similar to what LN represents in the Bitcoin network. Side channels are an off-chain solution for improved scaling. Plasma is supposed to introduce child blockchains which are to coexist with the main (Layer 1) blockchain.

Sharding is not really a Layer 2 solution. It is more like modified Layer 1 chain, bringing a better scaling. We have yet to see how sharding functions or if it functions at all in practice.

449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What Bitcoin Did Podcast with Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert on: August 18, 2018, 04:29:43 PM
If you like to listen to bitcoin related podcasts on your way from/to work or school, I'm sure you have already heard of the "What Bitcoin Did" podcast by Peter McCormack.

The website features a lot of quality episodes, but this time I would like to share an episode I enjoyed very much.

It is an interview with Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert (people behind the TV show Keiser report).

They both seem to be bitcoin maximalists and it was really nice to hear so many things that resonated with my own views on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

I know that Max is a sort of a controversial figure, but many of the things that he mentioned in the podcast about bitcoin were spot on. If you are not familiar with Max and Stacy, the What Bitcoin Did website also gives a short summary of their bitcoin related activity as journalists:

Quote
Max first introduced Bitcoin to the Keiser report in 2011; he realised that it was sound money, outside of the control of governments and banks, and The Keiser Report was the only media outlet promoting it. Max has continued to support Bitcoin and is one of the leading voices in the community, confident that the price of a single coin will reach over $100k.

I hope you'll enjoy the podcast and I would like to hear your thoughts.
450  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Please Suggest Do & don'ts For Newbie on: August 18, 2018, 04:20:24 PM
It should be well fitted in beginners board and I think that section will see more response to his enquiry.
Yes, I agree, the beginners board would be the right board for this post. Not only will the OP get more responses, but also less spam.

So, OP, you should move this thread to the beginners board. In case you haven't done that before, the move link is in the lower left corner beneath the post.
451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Super-bubble exploded, lets grow now on: August 18, 2018, 03:40:46 PM
No I don't think it has exploded just as yet. When the super-bubble really explodes, only a tiny fraction of altcoins is going to survive. It will be a real bloodshed.

Can we say that the dirt has been cleaned and we can now invest at the right price?
Maybe the dirt has settled for now. I have no idea. Maybe it's safe to invest, maybe it's not. It's anybody's guess. But this is nowhere near the kind of bubble burst I anticipate we are going to witness in the future.
452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Binance demonstrated its decentralized exchange on: August 18, 2018, 03:22:14 PM
Good news for binance and good news for every crypto enthusiast really. Also very interesting video to watch.

It's all command prompt commands for now, but I suppose the front end (user interface) is easy to make once you have a fully functional back end code.

The guy in the video says they delivered the first version of the exchange code one or two months earlier than planed. So hopefully we will have a fully operational DEX soon.
453  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Please Suggest Do & don'ts For Newbie on: August 18, 2018, 02:35:40 PM
One of the first rules to follow is to stay on topic and post in the appropriate board or sub-board. You made this post in the following category:

Bitcoin Forum > Alternate cryptocurrencies > Altcoin Discussion

but it has nothing (or very little) to do with Altcoin discussion. So my suggestion to you is to find the right board and move this thread there.
454  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: monero defeats asics on: August 18, 2018, 02:01:50 PM
I see that now we have estimates that 50 percent of Monero's hashrate was due to ASIC mining (secret or not). Should we be pro or anti ASIC? You could argue both ways. In principle I'm more for the design where decentralization is maintained as much as possible. On one hand, who is to say that they won't make another ASIC pretty soon, one that will be capable of mining the new algo? And who knows, this time maybe it will remain secret for a longer period of time.
455  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Proof Of Stake on: August 17, 2018, 06:22:26 PM
Stake will be proff if your work with following the rules, If no, You can't get stake. Carefully for work, So you will get stake like you want. I says stake for Bounty Campaign.
stake is obtained when you complete a weekly assignment with the rules made by the manager bounty, according to the rank and division of the stake in the bounty campaign

You have both totally missed the point of the OP. This thread has nothing to do with bounty campaigns.

Please don't spam this thread with useless comments.
456  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Proof Of Stake on: August 17, 2018, 05:57:40 PM
In Proof of Work consensus protocols, the validators (miners) have to solve a mathematical puzzle in order to add new blocks in the blockchain. In Proof of Stake protocols, validators have to stake coins to be given the the right to propose and vote on the new blocks.

I would like to refer you to Ethereum's FAQ about Proof of Stake:

https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Proof-of-Stake-FAQs

They have nicely described some of the aspects of the PoS consensus, which they are announcing to implement in near future.

I still have no idea how they will solve the "nothing at stake problem" (point 4) should forks occur.
457  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Delete one or more Block on: August 16, 2018, 08:43:03 PM
Very interesting. The number six was simply randomly chosen? Or by six confirmations the possibility to do serious damage to the chain is now so statistical large that it becomes impossible in practice? I’m asking, because I always find a fascination on how some standards / values get chosen. Is it based on probability for a given outcome, or just really randomly chosen.
I think 6 is just a commonly used number. There is no rule in the strict sense of the word, but the deeper you go the safer you are. The deeper you go, the more certain you are that your transaction will end up on the consensus chain.

I don't think it's possible even if it's only one block, because the blockchain in the design won't be able to break down and of course it's transparent and that's all the attraction of the blockchain
No, with one block you are not safe. At least in theory, because it can be orphaned. Not sure about 2 blocks, but even 2 blocks can sometimes be orphaned.

That's why there is the rule to wait for 6 confirmations before a payment is confirmed. There is nothing special about the number 6, but it is practically impossible to replace a block that has 6 or more blocks on top of it.

I agree, but it's a ridiculous for small transaction/payment since no sane people would try 51% attack. Most payment service/processor usually set a confirmation as default, while few others even accept 0-conf.
Sure, with small payments you are always safe. No one is going to perform a 51% attack to double spend small amounts. But with large transactions you should wait these 6 blocks.

458  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What's the fastest transaction speed you've seen? on: August 16, 2018, 06:27:11 PM
In addition to the centralization issue, I don't see that they really have the need for such a speed. Why preparing for high throughput and peak performance if we don't have many users using our blockchain. To paraphrase Andreas Antonopoulos, let us first have a scaling problem, and we will find a solution to it.
459  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Delete one or more Block on: August 16, 2018, 02:34:55 PM
To put it simply:

No, if it is buried deep in the blockchain.

Yes, if it is at the top of the blockchain, or close to the top.

That's why there is the rule to wait for 6 confirmations before a payment is confirmed. There is nothing special about the number 6, but it is practically impossible to replace a block that has 6 or more blocks on top of it.
460  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Earning money in my sleep ! on: August 16, 2018, 01:31:44 PM
...I get a very nice profit on my primairy investment of 1 BTC. Mostly 20% or more on a monthly base...
Forgive me, but I somehow doubt this.

To get 20 percent montly increase on your investment means to get a yearly rate of unbelievable 792% (if my math is right).

I cannot take seriously anyone who promises me such huge returns.

In addition, they do not need to attract small amounts from users around the world. If this can give such a profit, then they can easily find a major investor.
Well, that's a fair point. A proven system that works on that level would certainly attract major investors.
