People should "hold" BTC that is not theirs and they know it is not theirs? People have got the scammers tag before for doing just that... I do not see how this is "safer". You are asking them to accept a liability cuz Nefario is fail...

If anyone received coin that is not theirs they should return it ASAP! It is the correct thing to do.

I'm shocked at what Theymos is advocating here...

Yes Nefario is clearly incompetent but holding on to something that is not theirs is just wrong.

The money isn't Nefario's, either. I trust random recipients of the money more than I trust Nefario.
4462  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 19, 2012, 12:49:30 PM
The question is what kind of contract it was.

There was no employment contract. The shareholders agreed amongst themselves to send him some money regularly, but we had no contract with Nefario.
4463  Economy / Securities / Re: GLBSE Payment Claims (Announce your payment here) on: October 19, 2012, 12:42:45 PM
Nefario has proven himself to be ridiculously incompetent, so it might be safer for people who received extra BTC to hold it until Nefario distributes all of the BTC he has and he releases the share info.

So would we be right in assuming that no-one's going to authorise any salary payments to Nefario until this mess has been cleaned up and that the business will use its own remaining funds to top-up any shortfall if Nefario is unable to recover all the over-payments?

Yes. I never paid Nefario, and there's no way I'm going to pay him as long as BitcoinGlobal is in debt to users. And the remaining operating funds will be used to cover any debt to users. If most people who received extra BTC are honest and Nefario didn't spend any of the user funds (on lawyers or whatever), I think there should be enough money.

4465  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Membergroups; or: Why do some users get colored coins under their names? on: October 18, 2012, 03:26:39 PM
How does administration determine if someone is a scammer? Is there a vote or something?

I decide. Only blatant scammers get the tag, though. I don't want to be an "Internet judge".

That is alot of BTC.

It never used to be. Grin

When VIP status was created, the BTC price was about $15. It's supposed to be very expensive. If everyone had VIP status it would lose its meaning.
4466  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Writing analysis on Satoshi Nakamoto. on: October 17, 2012, 02:49:55 AM
I am becoming more convinced we are dealing with an organization here a la Bavarian Illuminati, who started many of the world's revolutions.

I wouldn't be too surprised if that was the case, but I still think that Satoshi is one person, and I don't think he's still on the forum.

I think:
- Satoshi is a quiet person who watched the cypherpunk scene, but didn't participate much.
- The idea for Bitcoin came to him spontaneously. (The idea is innovative, but not that complex -- it requires only pulling together many existing technologies.)
- He was very familiar with C++ syntax, but the original code was pretty inelegant in places. The ideas were more elegant. Maybe he had never done much large-scale programming before -- he might be in academia.
- He found the problem and associated P2P issues very interesting, so he spent a lot of time putting Bitcoin together.
- He expected at the start that he would remain interested in Bitcoin for a long time and would continue to lead the project, but in the end he found himself becoming bored with the whole thing. Maybe he found other interesting things he'd rather be doing. So he gradually stopped working with Bitcoin and set up Gavin to be his successor.

I don't know what that's about. I just put up the ad that was given to me.

Thanks for replying. Can you specify exactly where I should see the link?

Oops, that became broken at some point. You can move your topics now. Thanks for mentioning it.
4470  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: October 16, 2012, 02:19:28 AM
Are there different criteria, than 4h+5 posts, to move a topic from Newbies to a different forum?

No. The link is near the bottom of the topic page.
4471  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 15, 2012, 11:20:07 PM
theymos... but what would you take as an evidence? I mean what do you think the police wold take as evidence when the police would care about bitcoins. They would use the exact same info. So i dont fully get why you did this.

Would you give out the details when #bitcoin-police checked the traces in database and ask you for evidence? Otherwise bitcoinuser would be in disadvantage to real world user again. Because btc isnt real money for the real police yet.

My current policy is to release IPs only in these cases:
- Police send me convincing evidence that someone is guilty. I then release IPs to the police only. (This has happened.)
- A court with jurisdiction over the forum sends me a subpoena that isn't obviously unjust. (This has not happened.)
- A scammer is absolutely proven to be guilty and stops reasonably negotiating with his victims.
- Someone is repeatedly evading bans.

The accused person in the GLBSE case wasn't absolutely proven to be guilty, and wasn't even given a chance to respond to the allegations. Nefario never went to the police as far as I know.

I'm not sure whether I should release IPs at all, really. I'd like to see a discussion about the morality of this. Releasing IPs enables people to act violently toward the accused person, either in person or through police. Is it really right to commit violence against someone just because he did something non-violently over the Internet? I'm not sure. Services should ideally be set up so that scamming is impossible and as a result no one is ever tempted toward violence.

Sweet. Is this a new forum feature, or a one time thing? Smiley

Feature. The data is live.
4473  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 15, 2012, 10:24:37 PM
GLBSE could also be defined as your site.

Not really. I own only 3.3% of BitcoinGlobal and I never dealt with the GLBSE code/server/etc.

The chances that the hacker had modified the logs to accuse someone else visiting the forum instead of deleteing the log are extremely slim and anyway what is the worst case scenario to someone on the forum being falsely accused  ?

I'll keep that in mind if someone asks me for your IP addresses based on inconclusive evidence...

I saw many times, you saying about funds you hold.
You never so far told exactly how much you hold or how much you sent.
Always ~~~ approximate only, never exact.
It was you, who exposed in this forum, about the GLBSE bitcoin you hold.

As far as I can tell, I held 956.49814586 user BTC. This is the amount I sent to the accountant. I now hold 455.99669284 BTC in operating funds for BitcoinGlobal.
4474  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 15, 2012, 04:57:04 PM
I didn't release the IPs because I can't trust evidence like, "This person stole from my site. Look at these records that my (hacked) site collected. Give me their IPs." If I accepted that kind of evidence, anyone could fabricate "records" and get forum user IPs from me.

theymos... you didnt reveal the data about a thieve that stole nearly 25,000BTC? Why is that?

2500 BTC. The shareholders wanted this info to be private. The money was eventually recovered.

And does nefario speak about you that is holding the last user-money that nef cant pay back until he got it?

I am no longer holding any user funds. The GLBSE accountant now has what I was previously holding (~900 BTC).
4475  Local / Русский (Russian) / Re: Additional moderator needed on: October 15, 2012, 04:32:24 PM

There were 58 votes, so the median is at 29. As you can see,  Balthazar and [Tycho] have the highest median rating of "Good". The remaining candidates have a lower median rating of "Poor" and are eliminated.

To break the tie, we keep removing "Good" votes from each of the two remaining candidates until one of them has a different median. In this case, after removing 3 votes, Balthazar has a rating of "Poor". Therefore, he is eliminated and [Tycho] wins.

Thanks for participating.
4476  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scammer tag: Nefario. on: October 15, 2012, 03:35:58 AM
Is that true? I heard Nefario won the vote. It seems to me the majority of the GLBSE shareholders voted to keep Nefario as CEO and that he was doing the right thing.

If Nefario did lose that vote then he should have the tag for that... Would be simple, black and white... But I don't think that is what happened.

I lost a vote to remove Nefario as CEO, even though most shareholders at the meeting supported me in this. This does not imply that Nefario would have won a 50% vote to shut down GLBSE, since BitcoinGlobal strangely has no concept of quorum and not every shareholder was at the meeting. Also, it is against the bylaws to shut down GLBSE without a 66% vote.

~23%. Theymos also initiated a vote to remove nefario as CEO, and was outvoted. He then tried to sell his shares in the company because he refused to invest in a company that the CEO refused to listen to the board.

3.3%. (I was selling additional shares owned by other people.) I tried to sell shares long before the vote to remove Nefario, over issues unrelated to the GLBSE shutdown.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:

Efficacy stats:

Info about the current ad slots:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 17:00:00 on October 21, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

Excuse me wm-center won 4 slots at 4.25 btc not 4.5 but I was correct about everything else no one bid in the last 30 mins of this auction and therefore it was never extended and ended on time.

Right.
