but but but havent you heard bitcoins dead? again!  for like the 10th time.  I better sell everything at any price I can get!

That's what Wired Magazine said the last time a crash happened in 2011. Now they look like idiots.
463  Economy / Speculation / Re: Thank you to all the Terrified BTC Sellers! on: July 06, 2013, 10:42:55 PM
We are currently working to resolve some fundamental issues in response to requests we have received from several international regulatory agencies. If you have any questions, feel free to ask..Ira

"We" who?
True coiners don't give a rat's ass about "regulatory agencies". That's the whole point of cryptocoins.
Who wants to deal with "agencies" are fine enough with fiat.

You don't have to deal with regulatory agencies if you don't want to. Buy cryptos P2P, or buy from an exchange now and never withdraw into fiat. Job done.

Regulation was never about bitcoin, its about regulating the flow of USD.
464  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Assault weapon bans on: July 05, 2013, 08:50:24 PM
If you were going to kill a bunch of kids in a school, what would be your weapon of choice? A knife? A shotgun? A pistol? A piece of wood? Maybe something that can spit out the most projectiles per second? i.e. An assault rifle?

Fully automatic rifles were not mainly made for shooting more people more quickly. The vast majority of bullets fired in war never hit anyone. They are fired in order to make the enemy keep their heads down and allow friendly forces to advance and flank the enemy in order to win with minimum loss of life on BOTH SIDES. This is called 'suppressive fire' and the more bullets fired the better.

Fully automatic rifles fired in full auto mode are MUCH less accurate than single shot semi-automatics because each shot's recoil moves the following shots off target.

Conclusion:

The weapon a logical criminal sicko would choose for killing lots of unarmed people efficiently in a small space is the semi-automatic rifle.

Only twice as many transactions as a year ago, with a market value 10 times as large, and no reason to believe this is due to anything but speculation.

Compare to Dot-com era:

Total number of websites took 3 years to double between 2000-2003. Internet growth was in a bubble at the time and suffered a crash, yet look what happened: it wasn't all speculation & hype.

469  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of the Real Bitcoin Economy on: July 01, 2013, 03:18:24 AM
Don't get me wrong Mr Froggy.. I hate paypal.. Paypal tried to screw me out of $5k a few years back and only gave it back after threats of legal action.. I now refuse to use paypal.
My reference was "fast and easy as something like Paypal" - as in, fast and easy for grandma to setup and start using..  Read it again and you may notice that nobody said anything about a standard of exellence or how to run a payment system.. Not sure where you dreamt that up from.. But.. Yah..

If you mean the way they disable access to your own money in fast and easy way, then yeah I agree.

Bitcoin is not difficult to use if all you want to do is send and receive bitcoins. My goodness, how hard is it to
a) install the client (gasp),
b) get a wallet id to send bitcoins to (horrors), and
c) hit the send button (on a scale of 1-10, impossible)

That's harder than setting up a paypal account? Get outa here.
470  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of the Real Bitcoin Economy on: July 01, 2013, 02:10:52 AM
I am new to Bitcoin so I feel uniquely qualified to add my 02uBTC.
Until the use of Bitcoin is as fast and easy as something like Paypal, it cannot catch on with 'regular' people.  Right now it is just too confusing, difficult and slow.

Paypal! That gave me a good laugh.

If you login to your Paypal account through a VPN, you account is AUTOMATICALLY locked for 24 hours +. Every time.

Paypal doesn't have 2 factor authentication, and they can and do freeze your account at any time for arbitrary reasons.

Paypal isn't the standard of excellence, they serve as an example of how NOT to run a payment system.

Yeah, and "everyone who is relevant" has nothing to do with mass adoption. Funny how "everyone" and "the future of...human civilization" is now "everyone who is relevant" -- a bunch of tech geeks.

Digital P2P inflation-proof currency is absolutely in the future of human civilization. I'd take that bet any time.

These ideas are not going away. Deal with it.
I'm not saying they are. I'm saying that the statement OP made was ridiculous, and you haven't done anything to disprove that assertion. I also thought it was worth pointing out since OP was using the old perma-bull "bitcoin is the future" bit to say people should buy in the short / medium term. It's a good reason to buy if you will simply buy and hold for the long haul (indeed, I am a long term bull), but it's quite irrelevant in the shorter term.

As far as my comprehension skills tell me, he said "bitcoin or something like it". I don't have to disprove anything, never said bitcoin was the future of mankind.

BTC is like all the leaders of the tribe agreeing to make themselves richer. It is immune from what weaklings might say. Therefore in the 19th century it would have been an aristocrat, in the 20th a fascist and in the 21st it votes for Ron Paul.

This has nothing at all to do with the working idea that is bitcoin. Its pure technology.

Bitcoin price speculation and markets are a whole other topic entirely.

Human 'tribes' do what you are describing all the time with fiat currencies. Bitcoin not required. I argue that over time, bitcoin is more resistant to people enriching themselves and their friends through inflation, compared to traditional currencies.

If you know of a better way, develop it and release it to the world. If its truly better, it should flourish.

today everyone thinks that bitcoin "or something like it" is almost certainly going to be the future of how human civilization engages in trade and storing of value.
LOL, what a joke. Such a cult mentality.

Is that what you said about the internet?  Huh

I hope you're just trolling; either that or you don't understand tech.

Bitcoin 'or something like it' is here to stay.
See bolded. Do you really believe that's the current state of affairs? It's not clear to me that more than an extreme minority of people believe this. Obviously you believe it. And what of everyone?

No, he didn't mean your grandmother or Paris Hilton.

Nearly everyone who is relevant has positive things to say about bitcoin technology.

Furthermore, opinions are just that. Many smart people have made silly predictions about technology that were precisely wrong. I look at what people are dong with bitcoin. Does it work, is it unique, is it useful, does it become more useful the more people use it, and does it have development potential? I believe all of those things are a yes. That's good enough for me, but it is always useful hear the opinions of experienced professionals from a spectrum of different fields.

These can only be bought retail right?

At google play store.

I would accept someone selling me a $50 Vanilla Visa as well. Through escrow, of course.

I'm afraid I'm lost my faith in Bitcoin. Somebody save me..

good, you should never have faith in anything. faith is the antithesis of reason and evidence.

Sounds like advice from Hannibal Lector's autobiography.

The word faith is derived from Latin, to trust.
478  Economy / Speculation / Re: Looks more and more like a 2011 repeat on: June 26, 2013, 06:54:51 PM

This is not your typical finance though; this is really and truly revolution, on a bigger scale than has ever been comprehended.

The dot-com bubble crashed and was based on Internet. If the whole Internet wasn't strong enough to prevent any bubble crash, how something smaller like Bitcoin is supposed to do that?!?!

How does the dot-com bubble relate to the price of bitcoin? Bitcoin is not a dot-com startup.
479  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why is litecoin hyped so much when it doesn't add any value over bitcoin? on: June 26, 2013, 03:13:55 AM

You know there's a reason why they teach kids history in school and why people study history.

Events in history usually repeat themselves, and you can find patterns that help with predictions.

But if you feel that way, then alright.

We teach history in order to learn from peoples mistakes, not repeat them.

Imagine I had two rabbits in a cage, and they multiply at 200% a year, how many years will it take to cover the earth 3 feet deep in rabbits?

Sorry, but you're completely wrong. On all counts.

Last 40 years: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/Transistor_Count_and_Moore%27s_Law_-_2011.svg

Quantum computers are coming out now.

What do you think the processing power is going to be in a few years? Decades?

Don't be blind to how fast the world is advancing.

You're looking at the past, not the future.
