You had a post deleted by me. Calling someone a troll is a pointless ad hominem attack, adding nothing to the discussion. I consider such posts off-topic. I deleted many posts on both sides of the argument -- too many to send PMs to everyone.
4602  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 29, 2012, 10:55:55 PM
Well, I sincerely doubt an absolute leadership role, Linus Torvalds-style was intended. Not even Satoshi made himself appear that way.

Satoshi had absolute control over the bitcoin.org client, and he discouraged people from creating alternative clients. He tended to view the Bitcoin network as being equivalent to the Bitcoin software which he controlled. He once asked me to refrain from posting publicly about him changing a hard network rule. I have little doubt that he would have handled the P2SH issue by just quietly adding the code to the client, not waiting for miners to "agree" as Gavin did.

Not that any of this is necessarily bad, but it seems you remember Satoshi as being different than he actually was.

I have a question, can we increase our bid amount, if we are 'bumped off the charts' by other bidders?

Yes.

the auction ends at a random date and time?

Right.
4604  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi dumped Bitcoin right after Gavin announced he was going to the CIA. on: September 28, 2012, 04:26:50 PM
The fact is I want Satoshi back. He made this thing and I want him to represent it.

Be careful what you wish for. If Satoshi returns, you might find his decisions to be worse than Gavin's. I know I disagreed with him on some things.
4605  Other / Meta / Re: [REQUEST] Automatically skip to the page with unread commend on thread load on: September 28, 2012, 01:39:28 AM
The "new" button is great, but it should also be somewhere on the thread's page so you don't have to go back to the list of threads if you forget to click "new".

Ah. That would be nice.
4606  Other / Meta / Re: [REQUEST] Automatically skip to the page with unread commend on thread load on: September 28, 2012, 01:32:20 AM
Why don't you just use the "new" button?
4607  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Forum topics should auto-close after period of inactivity on: September 28, 2012, 12:49:35 AM
Better to necro an old thread than to have to relearn historical knowledge. Many forums have a policy against duplicate threads, in fact. Prohibiting necros is equivalent to adding a policy requiring duplicate threads.

Yeah, I don't like either of these policies. Post in an old thread or create a new one -- whichever you want.
4608  Other / Meta / Re: 'Good post' - feature on: September 28, 2012, 12:48:40 AM
What about a rating feature that doesn't affect the user, only the post? For example, each post has a upvote/downvote button (downvote button optional). To prevent exploitation, a user could be given a quota of one vote per hour logged on or per 5 posts (or both, or some other metric). A "Best Recent Posts" page and a "All Time Best" page could be added.

That's no better IMO. Still a global rating.

4610  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Care about Bitcoin? STAY AWAY from the "Bitcoin Fundation" on: September 27, 2012, 08:37:44 PM
Answer this for me: Before an unelected team of developers directed the project, and now you have the opportunity to actually influence the decisions and composition of the development team. Can you honestly say you have lost influence? Couldn't you simply recognize this as a more efficient structure for the dev team?

The Foundation could create more democratic influence in the development of the bitcoin.org client, which I wouldn't like. The developers should decide what the client should do. I definitely wouldn't want to see a Bitcoin Foundation vote about something like P2SH.

I'll probably join. Like it or not, the Foundation's activities will be important, and I'd like to have a vote. I'm somewhat optimistic about it.
4611  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 27, 2012, 07:40:49 PM
In general, whoever founds an organization gets to make the rules.

Starting off with a board of sane and competent people seems obviously better starting off with people fighting for the seats.

I'm not disputing that... Two seats are for people voted in by individual members, two are for people voted in by corporate members, and one is the "founder" seat. I'm just wondering what the procedure is for that final seat.
4612  Other / Meta / Re: 'Good post' - feature on: September 27, 2012, 05:35:54 PM
I don't want any sort of global rating feature on the forum. Reddit is nice sometimes, but the global rating system promotes groupthink and discourages controversial posts and long posts. A web-of-trust-style rating system would be good.

The forum has enough money.
4613  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 27, 2012, 05:23:55 PM
If they invite you, would you accept being part of it?

Maybe, but I'm not really qualified. I'm only a 21-year-old college student.

I suggest two seats just for mining, with voting decided in the coinbase rather than creating a third category of membership.

I disagree strongly with this. Miners perform work for the network, but their interests are not really important. Every miner can be replaced if someone figures out how to do mining more efficiently, and this is good.
4614  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 27, 2012, 03:57:26 PM
I'm happy with the board selection.
4615  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 27, 2012, 03:52:36 PM
Does a PO box count as a "real address"?

How is the Founder board seat given away?
4616  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 27, 2012, 03:51:41 PM
It's good that the Foundation will be funding development and representing Bitcoin legally, but it's important that the ownership of Bitcoin-related assets doesn't become too centralized. In particular, the Foundation should not:
- Control bitcoin.org
- Control any DNS seeds, etc.
- Own copyright on the Bitcoin source code
- Own any patents
- Own the Bitcoin trademark (unless someone has to own it)
4617  Bitcoin / Important Announcements / Bitcoin Foundation announced on: September 27, 2012, 03:30:32 PM
I'm pleased to announce the launch of the Bitcoin Foundation:
Quote
Bitcoin Foundation standardizes, protects and promotes the use of Bitcoin cryptographic money for the benefit of users worldwide.
https://www.bitcoinfoundation.org/

The Bitcoin Foundation is modeled on the Linux Foundation. I think Linux is a great "role model" for Bitcoin; it is a very successful open source project that really embraced the notion of "open," encouraging the use of the core technology for a wide range of applications.

I hope that the Bitcoin Foundation will help do the same for Bitcoin.

Of course, "the Foundation" won't do anything at all-- people get things done. I want the Bitcoin Foundation to be an open, member-driven organization, and hope that you or your organization will not only become a member but will help the Foundation accomplish its mission.

Please visit the Foundation website for details, and please keep in mind that nothing is set in stone; the structure of the Foundation can be changed by a vote of its members, and exactly what the Foundation does will largely depend on who is willing to step up do the work to make things happen.

To any of you feel like you should have been invited to be part of the group who defined the initial structure and purpose of the Foundation: I apologize. But in my experience the larger the group, the longer it takes to get things done, and it has been 11 months since I first posted about the possibility of forming a Foundation.

In what will doubtless be an ineffective attempt to fend off the trolls, here are some answers to what I expect might be commonly asked questions:

Q: Is this the infamous September Announcement?

Yes.

Q: How do we know you won't just take our bitcoins and run?

We won't. The initial Foundation board members are all people with well established reputations using their real names.

Q: How do we know you won't lose our bitcoins to hackers?

We'll be using a cold wallet, with the private key securely backed up, for most of the Foundation's funds; in the near future I expect we'll be using a multisignature cold wallet, with keys controlled by multiple Board members to keep the funds even more secure.

Q: Is this just a front for the CIA? What is the hidden agenda?

No. And there is none.

Q: The Foundation is a corporation, and corporations (especially US corporations) are evil.

OK. So don't join-- go form your own non-corporate non-evil organization, or just ignore the Foundation and do whatever you think is right.

Q: How, exactly, is the Foundation going to spend the money it gets?

That depends on how many bitcoins it gets from memberships and donations. See Peter's "Letter from the Executive Director" for the current list of priorities, and see the Linux Foundation website for an idea of the types of things I hope the Bitcoin Foundation will be doing, assuming it has the funds.

Finally, thanks to Peter Vessenes, Patrick Murck, Mark Karpeles, Charlie Shrem, Jon Matonis and Roger Ver who stepped up and did the work necessary to get this started.

4619  Other / Meta / Re: What's in a scammer tag? on: September 26, 2012, 11:20:16 PM
Scammer tag == "Untrustworthy person: beware". It's supposed to prevent clueless people (who don't do research) from trading with people who have previously done something very unethical while trading.

Other than warning clueless people about known scammers, I don't want to get the forum involved in disputes between traders.

No, shareholders get first shot at new shares sold. If I was a real shareholder I would then have the right to buy all of Theymos's shares and he can not refuse me.

Shareholders have right of first refusal for new shares. Shareholders don't have that right over my existing shares.
