481  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoiner Personality - MBTI/Keirsey Poll on: November 28, 2013, 06:12:57 PM
MBTI is a tool that can give insight into human behavior.  It made a big difference for me.

When I was growing up, I was often told "treat everyone the same", and "people are basically the same".  That was wrong.  That does not work.

MBTI sorts individuals based on their own stated preferences.

Favorite world: Do you prefer to focus on the outer world or on your own inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I).

Information: Do you prefer to focus on the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This is called Sensing (S) or Intuition (N).

Decisions: When making decisions, do you prefer to first look at logic and consistency or first look at the people and special circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) or Feeling (F).

Structure: In dealing with the outside world, do you prefer to get things decided or do you prefer to stay open to new information and options? This is called Judging (J) or Perceiving (P).

And this produces 16 types.  Not too many to assimilate if you devote some time and effort to it.  With practice and feedback it is possible to become proficient in determining someone's type by observation (but remember that introverts can be giving off contradictory signals as a mechanism).  If you are tied in any category, look at the other categories.

First: Understand yourself
Then: Understand other people
Profit

Isn't religion the biggest scam in the history of mankind?

Except for your own (true one), that is.
483  Other / Meta / Re: Problems with tor and the forum on: November 20, 2013, 08:45:48 PM
Problem is that mods can't see ip's (thankfully) so I have no way of knowing if someone is using their real ip or a proxy when I ban them. If I knew they were using tor I wouldn't bother. So you can either suck it up, or we can violate everyone's privacy by letting ips be seen by many more people. The former is the more desirable option, though more Inconvenient for you.

If you have to make a decision between privacy and convenience, then, of course, privacy is more desirable. I agree with that.
However, I think you don't have to make this decision; we can have both.

Why don't you make it this way:
Every user account that is not banned will be "white-listed", and white-listing overrules banning. That is, if a non-banned user logs in from a banned IP address, then the user is allowed to make posts. (Of course, banned IP addresses aren't allowed to register new accounts, because this would allow to circumvent the banning.)

Huh

If technically possible, please do this.  Using TOR should be encouraged.

If I didn't know better, I would conclude that he has been "compromised".

In former Soviet Union, blockchain monitors you.
486  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I thought we had made a mistake. It's worse than I thought PRIVACY PLZ on: November 14, 2013, 01:59:16 AM
Good luck.

487  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I thought we had made a mistake. It's worse than I thought PRIVACY PLZ on: November 14, 2013, 01:12:52 AM
I signed up to a few exchanges. Had to give them passport photos, bank statements etc.

Big mistake.
488  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pay your rent in vegas with BTC starting April 1st on: November 11, 2013, 03:15:50 AM
Good news.  But getting paid anonymously in BTC (for a private transaction) might be better.
489  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safest Wallet on: November 09, 2013, 11:33:47 PM
There are ways of recording your keys that are less likely to attract attention.  One would be using musical notation.  A full size piano keyboard contains 88 keys, which is more than enough for Base58 encoding.  And the typical entry-level digital keyboard today is 5 octaves, or 60 keys, which is just enough for Base58 encoding.  But a musical keyboard is not even required.  It can all be done from a computer.

One way (and there are other ways) of mapping a Bitcoin private key to musical notation would be:

It does not use upper case I, upper case O, the number 0, or lower case l
Since a typical uncompressed private key starts with 5, it corresponds nicely to a lower E on the treble clef.

And here is a private key in music notation:

It could be output and recorded in audio format (it is easy to do so), rather than notation, and the note durations could be changed to make it more musical and less mechanical.

Done using MuseScore
http://musescore.org/en

And there are other encoding methods available  Smiley

If these type of things make you dizzy, don't try it.

490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: something i didn't realize when backing up my wallet on: November 08, 2013, 04:03:48 PM
I backup automatically once a week with sequentially named backups.  The likelihood of losing any keys is essentially zero.

I agree.

Backup1a
Backup1b
Backup1c
etc.

appears to be much better than

Backup
overwrite Backup
overwrite Backup
overwrite Backup
etc.

3. Visitor enjoys an advertisement while they wait for 10 seconds or so while the attempt is made.

Preferably a Jennifer Aniston ad.

I don't think you managed to grasp the point of my first post in this thread.

I will let whoever reads this post now decide on that, I think we've answered your assumptions of it being a good advertisement for Bitcoin already.

Fair enough, since the chances are greater than zero.
493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a way to build a wallet generator till you hit the jackpot ? on: November 06, 2013, 07:46:38 PM
1. Gather a list of high-value bitcoin addresses. Or just use this one: http://bitcoinrichlist.com/top100

2. Dump them into a text file

3. Run vanitygen against the list of addresses: vanitygen -t "addresses.txt"

4. Wait billions of years

5. PROFIT!

I really tried find full Bitcoin address in vanitygen, but it showed no progress or even likelihood to find the Bitcoin address.

Use the regex option, otherwise it will complain that your prefix is too big.

vanitygen.exe -r ^ADDRESS_HERE$

Remember, the search is not cumulative, so you are always just seconds away from a huge jackpot. Don't lose hope! Waiting the first billion years is the hardest.

regex is too slow.  It would take zillions of years.

Truncating the address provides the needed positive feedback for the target audience.

The numbers involved are really really huge ...

I agree with you.  Using uppercase and lowercase letters, along with numbers is a remarkably compact way of representing "really really huge" numbers.

I don't think you managed to grasp how huge those numbers are.

It's more possible for one of us to Fuck Jennifer Anniston consentually

That could be our backup promotion.

For purposes of this promotion, do not search for full addresses.  Search for the first 8 characters of each one on your list of dormant accounts.  As you have demonstrated, humans require positive feedback.

Waiting billions of years may be too discouraging.

Which is a better deal mathematically?

  • Buying lottery tickets for $1 each, with a $100 million prize
  • Having unlimited free chances to find a private key to a dormant Bitcoin account with millions of dollars in it

Did you even read our posts?
They are not free.

Yes.  But I think you grossly overstated the cost of electricity.

No, the lotto ticket is by far the better option even with the minuscule amount of electricity needed for each wallet.

I appreciate your answer, but you have not provided any mathematical analysis.

You left out

Package it with a GUI

Have it require that a wallet be installed

Have it provide tantalizing feedback (like a slot machine or lottery ticket)
