481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin Kick Every Other Paper Money Out of Business? on: September 01, 2017, 01:35:43 PM
Bitcoin can not substitute any of the big fiat currencies.
Just look at the transaction times and fees we have at the moment.
Nobody is going to use it to buy a coffee when you have to wait for a confirmation twenty minutes.
Or pay the extra dollar for the fees.
People will use that payment form that is most comfortable to them.
And that will be cash or credit card.
482  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What are your top "must have" coins? on: September 01, 2017, 01:30:36 PM
I would say that if you want to invest in crypto currencies and diversify your investment, everything points to the coins with the highest market capitalizations.
Let's say the top five, maybe the top ten.
It's the same in the stock market. If you buy the stocks from a major index with the highest capitralizations, the past shows that you are doing nothing wrong with that.
Of course none of that coins will give you hundreds of percentages of profit over night. They are all too well examined for that.
But they will not go belly up as well. And even if one or two of them do, the rest will absorb that loss easily.
483  Economy / Economics / Re: Would bitcoin help teach kids about saving? on: September 01, 2017, 01:19:27 PM
Saving is saving and bitcoin is bitcoin.
To me bitcoin is a form of investment. And I am not so sure if I should bother kids with investment hypotheses.
Teaching them the positive effects of saving money, I think they can learn that with conventional money. Or apples.
Talking about bitcoin, I suppose that converstion requires at least a teenager.
484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $0.85 transaction fee is absolutely ridiculous! on: September 01, 2017, 10:14:04 AM
This is why I think that bitcoin won't be serving us for daily transactions in near future. In order to support daily transactions in near future, a coin must have a reasonable fees, fast transaction and most important of all, big coin cap (21 Mil isn't going to serve any good for daily transactions). I would safely say that bitcoin is going to be our digital gold.

That is exactly where we are heading at the moment.
And the main investors are only starting to put money in the bitcoin currency.
To them the fees are not of any concern, because they buy and sell large amounts.
I suppose that one day another cryptocurrency might have to take the place of digital money, while bitcoin will be our digital gold.
485  Economy / Economics / Re: Major Gold investor is entering Bitcoin market on: September 01, 2017, 10:07:55 AM
I like the idea of bitcoin in combination with gold.
I suppose they will have a plan to combine the safety of gold with the potential of bitcoin growth.
This shows us thet even the professionals of the investment business think of bitcoin as a worthy option to put money in!
The acceptance of bitcoin is growing, it can go on like this!!!
486  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin may not be number one for long on: September 01, 2017, 09:06:19 AM
I'm just wondering what number one in the world of crypto currencies means.
Bitcoin has and always will have the biggest community behind it.
Exactly because everything started with bitcoin. Bitcoin is the entrance door for everybody who enters the crypto world. And most people stay there.
The number of people who own and use a coin, that is the most importatnt thing I would say.
Referring to the market capitalization: that number does not say much about a currency in my oppinion. It does not say anything about how a coin is distributed.
487  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Jumps Above $4,800 for the First Time on: September 01, 2017, 08:50:33 AM
It is really interesting to see the price increases once again.
And that is happening even without the ETF approval in the US.
The investors from today, I think they are all normal people who see the potential of bitcoin (and I don't think many people can see that).
Imagine what will happen once ETF is going to be approved.
Every major investment company will to want to have a piece of the cake.
Wow....
488  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is the idea behind Bitcoin already raped and abused? on: September 01, 2017, 08:40:25 AM
Actually I don't know if there really was a bigger idea behind the developement of bitcoin.
I think the main reason why bitcoin was created was very simple: because it could be done.
There were technical problems at that time nobody was able to solve.
And I suppose those were enough incentive for the creators to work until they had found a solution.
Creating the universe of crypto currencies might have actually been a side effect.
489  Economy / Economics / Re: Can Bitcoin End World Poverty? on: September 01, 2017, 08:25:34 AM
I am wondering how bitcoin should do that.
In the realy poor parts of the world, basic things are needed first. Water, food, education.
I think those are the problems needed to be solved in the first place.
They affect a large part of the population in poor countries, so they must be dealt with on a large scale.
Once those basics are are dealt with, it can be time for people to take a look in crypto currencies and how they might be able to improve their lives further.
490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and governments on: September 01, 2017, 08:01:57 AM
I don't think that many governments have a problem with bitcoins.
They are very similar to stocks. I can buy stocks form businesses from other countries as well, and the governments do not bother.
The main problem of cryptocurrencies at the beginning was that too many criminals used it for money laundering or other activities.
But I don't think that this is happening with bitcoin on a larger scale anymore.
People have even started to pay their taxes when they do business with bitcoin. And governments like taxes.
491  Economy / Speculation / Re: September 2017 coming... Thoughts? on: September 01, 2017, 07:52:34 AM
I get the impression that bitcoin is becoming more resilient the older it gets. It has fought off a handful of crashes with the MSM then writting it off everytime to then see it come back stronger. Bitcoin has had a hell of a year in 2017 and seen highs I never imagined would happen. Right now I am sat here with my new funds for a 2nd sizable batch of bitcoin to add to my wallet.

I think the reason why bitcoin is becoming more resilient with time is connected to the number of people who own bitcoins.
A swarm always reacts slower than a few individuals.
Five years ago, only a few people owned coins. When a few of them sold, that affected the price and brought more of the to sell as well, what led to an even bigger affect in price.
Now there are many bitcoin owners. If a some sell, you do not recognice it in price very often.
Even if there is price movement, many people do net even know about that because they do not look at the price very often.
And even if they notice the price movement, they do not sell because to them bitcoin is a long term investment.
492  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin the new gold on: September 01, 2017, 07:43:05 AM
Bitcoin and gold are in some points very similar:
They are both objects of investment. Although you can make payments with both, the main usage for them is to store value.
The amount of gold in the world is limited, the number of bitcoins is limited as well.
Bitcoins get lost sometimes, so the number of usable bitcoins is in fact decreasing, gold is cunsumed by the industry.

But there is the big difference as well: gold is used by the industry in products, that is not the case with bitcoins.

I would say that bitcoin is digital gold, I think that adds it up best!
493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think are the biggest threats to Bitcoin prices in next 12 months on: September 01, 2017, 07:20:44 AM
The biggest problem I see is the segwit2x situation.
When I look at the current numbers, there seems to be a support for segwit2x of over 90% of the miners at the moment. And big parts of the bitcoin industry too.
In case it really comes to a fork, what would be left of bitcoin?
And what coin would be called bitcoin?
494  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What the hell happened to mempool? It was empty for a little while, now 10K on: August 29, 2017, 06:03:00 PM
I just took a look at the mempool size shown at btc.com, there is no drop visible.
Seemst to be only blockchain.info who shows that strange behaviour.
Maybe it's really a rejection of transactions with small fees.
But what I really don't understand is that the size of the mempool on blockchain.info is increasing while it stays constant on btc.com.
495  Economy / Economics / Re: Most people dont even know what this is yet. on: August 29, 2017, 04:58:09 PM
I have told the bitcoin story to some people already, but none of them is really interested.
I guess to many people that is just some kind of smalltalk, they forget it immediatelly again.
After a few days I can tell them the whole story again and it seems to be completely new to them...
Maybe I am just a lousy narrator...

But I think it is the same when people hear about it in news and media.
The term bitcoin is stuck in their heads just for a few moments, and then overwritten by something else.
496  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The time is WWIII, what are our Bitcoin Doomsday Preppers doing? on: August 29, 2017, 05:36:38 AM
It will be no WWIII.
There is this one guy, toying with his missiles. But he is isolated, not even supported by his big brother anymore.
That country might do some harm in its region, but not further away.
The rest of the world has some conflicts as well, but they are from economic nature.
To me I do not prepare for doomsday scenarios because something like that will not happen.
497  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC and Banks on: August 29, 2017, 05:24:09 AM
I don't know if banks invested in bitcoin, but actually I would be surprised if they already did.
From their point of view, bitcoin is still highly speculative, in the US not even ETF approved.
I suppose the bosses would not give their ok if somebody in their team would come up with the idea of an investment in bitcoin.
498  Economy / Economics / Re: Compare Bitcoin to Other Investment Instruments (Stocks, Real Estates, Etc.) on: August 28, 2017, 02:55:39 PM
Bitcoin is in some points similar to stocks.
You can handle it at exchanges, both have charts that can be analized and these charts somehow seem to have similar ways of behaving. At least until now.
But when you buy a stock of a company, you have numbers of that company you can base your investment decision on.
With bitcoin, you basically have only the way it developed in the past. That makes it very difficult to say what a fair price for it is.
499  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why the currency change on btc and it mostly increases on: August 28, 2017, 02:44:25 PM
On the stock market sometimes a stock goes way above its estimated value, just because it is rising.
A trend sometimes has its own will.
The people look back and see how much a certain stock has improved in value and everybody believes that this will keep on going for a while. Sot they buy and buy.
With bitcoin it is a similar mechanism I think.
But what I can not tell is where a fair price for one bitcoin could be settled. I would not even know where to begin with such an estimation.
500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you keep buying? on: August 28, 2017, 02:08:33 PM
Buying or not buying, that's a bit of a tricky question at the moment.
The trend of bitcoin price still shows upwards, segwit is active and working, that all are positive signs.
But the mempool is still full, and maybe we are heading towards a new fork in a few months.
Those factors make the near future developement of bitcoin kind of uncertain.
Personally I have reduced my buying activities untill I have a better overview, especially over the fork situation.
