541  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Show me your Bitcoin XT on: June 13, 2015, 11:41:03 AM
I was somewhat pro 20MB block limits before but I have yet to install Bitcoin XT because I am leery of Centralized Authoritarian Mike Hearn's involvement in all of this. Instead, I have added another 6 new Bitcoin core nodes.
542  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I wanted to know!!!! on: June 07, 2015, 03:33:29 AM
In the past, I've had many international wire transfers out of the US routinely blocked by my bank (it may have something to do with the countries I was sending money to). They would eventually clear after I called some compliance officer and explained who and what the money was for, but it was becoming a nuisance. Using bitcoins was one way to get around this inconvenience.
543  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi said: Lets go for the bigger block! on: June 05, 2015, 12:18:37 AM
We can simply modify few codes at bitcoin-qt to support 20MB or even 20GB block:

You realize that a 20GB block would never work with a 32-bit client, don't you? The maximum addressable memory for 32-bits is 4GB, and that needs to hold memcache and everything else.
544  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brain Wallet hacked, suspect bitcoin talk hackers. on: May 30, 2015, 11:58:41 AM
doesnt hashing and sweping a brain wallet take some compuation? wouldnt that be an ongoing recomputation every day to sweep wallets? is that billion hashes per second inclusive of that work?

The computation for the rainbow table entry for your address could have been done months or or even years ago. The attacker could just have been comparing live transactions to see if he already has computed your private key in his rainbow table, and then use that to do the sweep.

545  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brain Wallet hacked, suspect bitcoin talk hackers. on: May 30, 2015, 11:18:36 AM
BTW, does anyone know what is the strongest entropy password that has been successfully cracked to date?

That would be a moving target and it would depend a lot on how your brute-force program searches the space (since no brute-force tool is really 100% brute-stupid and would start attacking commonly used characters first). 15 years ago using a regular PC I was using L0pthcrack to scan our network for weak passwords and found many with 40+ bits of entropy.
546  Other / Meta / Re: the stupidest thing about this forum since i got on on: May 30, 2015, 10:48:37 AM
What do you have to say that is so important and profound it can't possibly wait 5 minutes?

Looks like he wants to get into mining and wants a lot of questions answered because he claims to know "jack shit". Unfortunately there is no quick way to explain the history of mining and how we got to the state we are in today. He would just have to read several of the long hardware threads from the beginning. I doubt that removing the 5 minute restriction would help him learn what he wants to know any quicker.
547  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it better to hold 8 btc split to 8 different addresses or into one single add on: May 30, 2015, 10:16:16 AM
Having more addresses does not always imply that your coins would be much safer. If you use the same method to generate the 8 different private keys, e.g. some super lame brainwallet method such as using lines from Shakespeare, then if one of your keys gets brute forced it would only be a matter of time (milliseconds) before the others get hacked too.
548  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 'Casting out nines' instead of leading zeros on Proof of Work on: May 29, 2015, 12:01:03 PM
As the difficulty increased we would find more improbable and interesting numbers with a specific propriety.

Can the difficulty be scaled up/down in a granular fashion so that we will always get 10 minute blocks? I.e., for a given global hash rate that is somewhat appropriate for the current difficulty we don't want large jumps in block times if the difficulty is incremented or decremented by one step.
549  Other / Meta / Re: Request for forum privacy policy statement on: May 29, 2015, 12:52:04 AM
I second this request, in particular to defining a data retention policy for items such as:
- user access logs
- cookies, IP address and user agent
- deleted posts and messages
- archived database backups

For example, if the policy states that deleted posts are first soft-deleted and kept one the database for 5 years before hard deletion, and database backups are kept for 2 years before being destroyed, then it would be clear to everyone that deleted posts can be recovered for up to 7 years after the initial deletion.

It can be a liability for the forum to keep data around indefinitely.
550  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How To Sell Bitcoins From Venezuela on: May 28, 2015, 11:36:48 PM
Try localbitcoins. You can sell with direct deposit to your bank account, local meetups, or pretty much any other method you can think of. You can also try the currency exchange subforum here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=53.0

Yes, localbitcoins has an escrow system that you can use with a buyer who can deposit cash into your Wells Fargo account in the US.

1) Find buyer in the US who will agree to the transaction.
2) Fund and escrow the transaction using bitcoins. At this point you can no longer retrieve your coins without localbitcoins intervention.
3) Wait for buyer to put the cash in your Wells Fargo account and mark the transaction as completed. Make sure the money is really there!
4) Release the bitcoins from escrow to the buyer.
551  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitnodes Incentive Program on: May 28, 2015, 12:32:40 AM
What happens after December 31, 2015? Will this program expire and that's it?

He's paying out the rewards with his own funds. What would you reasonably expect?

BTW, one of my nodes got about 0.039 BTC. It was a pleasant surprise. At least I can say that I got my scrap BTC without taking part in a signature campaign.
552  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I let my last credit/debit card expire this month on: May 28, 2015, 12:16:34 AM
And do you have a strategy set up in case Bitcoin falls significantly compared to the USD worsening the value of your holdings or do you just have most of your worth with a bank?

My strategy is that if Bitcoin falls significantly, in 2 weeks I get paid again. And I will continue to get paid.

Does that mean that you don't hold significant savings in bitcoins? If so, then what do you use to save?
553  Other / Off-topic / Re: Precautions to take just in case email goes down on: May 27, 2015, 10:58:14 AM
answer:
stop using generic email providers. and instead purchase your own domain/pop service and have your own independant and fully personalised email

If you do take this approach, only host it yourself. Otherwise you are relying on a third party which themselves could go offline at any point, or be exploited.

Now the next question would be should you or should you not host your own authoritative DNS servers to resolve the MX records to your domain? Should you rely on cheapo DNS service (GoDaddy), premium DNS service (UltraDNS), or just roll out your own name servers across the globe?

I run my own redundant name servers for my personal vanity domain, but then again I did it just for fun and it costs a bundle to maintain. Plus my DNS servers could never withstand a DNS-level DoS attack.
554  Other / Meta / Re: VIP account with a single space as a Username on: May 26, 2015, 10:46:43 PM
He was associated with the site http://mybitcointrade.com/ which is defunct now and may have been re-registered by someone else in between.

Yes, I am sure he was originally smart1985, who later changed his name to mybitcointrade.com. I remember some of his posts from 2011/2012.

Wasn't he also the guy who sent bulanula 25 BTC instead of 2.5 BTC?
555  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When i hear banks say I like blockchain tech but not bitcoin... on: May 21, 2015, 11:20:39 PM
blockchain don't work without nodes and mining power ...

Well a blockchain based on Proof-of-Authority only needs 1 centralized node and 0 mining power. Let's hope that we never get to this kind of shit.
556  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A cell phone is all you need to get a Bitcoin loan? on: May 21, 2015, 05:18:37 AM
is this true? the only requirements they need is a mobile phone number? are there any other requirements they need aside of that?

If it is done on peer-to-peer basis and over the phone, I can't see how a lender can check a person's trustworthiness. Can you?

Looks like the system will include a distributed credit history database which is tied to your phone which in turn is tied to your identity. Pretty much like how the 3 main credit bureaus in the US tie a person's credit history to their SSN. It can work if a person can only have one phone number, so if they blow their credit rating by defaulting on a loan they can't easily get a new identity and new credit history.
557  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is the thief? on: May 20, 2015, 05:34:23 PM
Morally everyone except C.

Legally, you have already stated...

Yeah I guess it really depends on what each persons intentions are,

Person E is likely to be some random full node that person D happens to connect to in order to relay the transaction. How could E be morally guilty of anything?
558  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there an actual Bitcoin bank yet? on: May 19, 2015, 02:34:53 AM
A bank does not necessarily imply the existence a central bank. It could just be an independent business where Bitcoin deposits and loans are made. There is already, after all, a Lending section in this forum, so the concept of lending bitcoins should not be alien to anyone.
559  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dark Net Weapons Bust Leads To 17 Arrests and a $80,000 Bitcoin Seizure on: May 18, 2015, 11:44:02 AM
$2,500 for a Walther PPK/S .380 calibre pistol and a silencer! The guy didn't know how to shop, you can get a decent gun for way less.

The sale was made in Australia which virtually has a complete gun ban. It takes 6 months of a sport shooting club membership to be eligible to purchase a handgun that will be strictly used for sport shooting.

When I was in school, I met an Australian student at a US gun range who told me that he unintentionally smuggled about 20 rounds of loose .22 LR ammunition in his carry on bag on one of his trips back to Australia. Somehow it wasn't detected by Airport security. His carry on backpack was also his gun range bag, and this was a long time ago before 9/11 so I believed him then.

Anyway he claims to have sold the 20 rounds of .22 LR (with a cost of 40 cents based on Walmart prices back then) for 200 AUD in Australia to some shady character.

Is .22 rimfire really Unobtaniuim in Australia?
560  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Generators? on: May 14, 2015, 08:09:15 AM
The only way to create new Bitcoin is to mine them with mining program. There's no thing such as 'generator' which will produce new Bitcoin. I once fall for a trap like this. I'm lucky that I did not download. Else, I wont be here as a Bitcoiner.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Even Satoshi himself once said that that he is creating something like bitcoin generator. So it is not pure fiction. Original quote from Satoshi:

Quote
June 18, 2010: I planned on creating a free bitcoin generator. When it gets too hard for mortals to generate 50BTC, new users could get some coins to play with right away.

While it is true that 99.9% of bitcoin generators right now are purely scams and malware but there is possibility of creating one that really works.
If Satoshi created such thing bitcoin generator. Any one can generate bitcoin from the thin air. Then mining becomes meaningless. He will destroy bitcoin completely.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a faucet. Back in the day even Gavin operated a faucet that gave out much more than the scrap BTC you get from today's faucets.
