Price-wise, probably one of the more frustrating coins... Has a ton of potential, yet the price keeps getting hammered down repeatedly. Something not adding up.

10% insta-mine total coins.

which means 50% insta-mine coins of currently in circulation.

which means instant dump by the few who owns it as soon as the price moves up a bit

which means price will not be high for at least 6 months.

to make matters even worse they decreased the number of coins from 80 mil to 20 mil which makes the coin distribution even more unfair.

Yet apparently worth your time to troll. Cheesy

Of course, perhaps your time is just worth very little. The hardcore facts suggest so.

Don't call him a troll - he's right. It would explain what's wrong with this coin marketwise. Every time it makes headway towards 20, no matter how strong or substantive the news, it gets dragged down (I wouldn't say hammered). My question, to Darkcoin believers, and to those who know how much of this "overhead supply" is out there - how long before it's run down?

Is 6-months a likely scenario - is that how much longer there is to wait before the road is cleared so this coin can rise above 20? And for those asking for patience, it's been like this for weeks/months while a number of other coins, with much less substance/news, have soared. The opportunity cost for holders of this coin has been huge (then again, so has the benefit of being spared from the volatility of scam/blipcoins).

I'm hopeful Darksend coming out to full release and the marketing push will help give this coin the massive attention it deserves. But dont dismiss those frustrated with its treatment on the exchanges so far - its price behavior has not been normal.

You're actually surprised by profit-taking? If DRK was widely expected to soar, that would've been built into the price already. That's how any financial asset works. There's no free lunch: returns always come with risk.

Feel free to move on to your pump-and-dump coins and country coins, since those are the ones that 'soared' (however briefly). Just one brief piece of advice for gambling out there in shitcoin-land: if everyone's talking about it, you're already too late. Wink

Ok, got the miner up and running and just found a block  Grin How long until it shows in my balance? Is there a command to find out?

Or, is there a problem because immediately after finding the block I got the message:

Some problems at write: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.

I've googled it, but can only find out it's a winsock issue (I think).

Any ideas?Huh?

Wait a while and type refresh in your simplewallet terminal. It should show up unless it was an orphaned block.

Does anyone know where the best volume is for DRK? I have just put a 5 BTC order in over at MintPal for DRK (3192 DRK) but only 4 have been purchased and the rest are in orders.

Does this mean that MintPal doesn't have enough coins at the moment to fulfil the buy order?

MintPal is just an orderbook. Current going rate for BTC/DRK on MintPal is 0.00167. At 5 BTC for 3192 DRK, you're asking for a price of .0015664. Unless the price of DRK goes lower, your order won't be fulfilled because sellers will sell to people offering more money than you for the same amount of DRK.

Actually, looking at it right now, MintPal doesn't have the volume to fulfill 3000 DRK without going to very high prices (over 0.002). You're better off on Cryptsy for such a larger order. At the current buy/sell depths, you can buy 5 BTC worth without going over 0.0018.

How does DarkSend compare to this CryptoNote technology https://cryptonote.org ?
Is DarkSend better, or it is exactly the same tech?

I've been following this development. Short answer: no one knows yet. The blockchain explorer for BCN ("Bytecoin") only just came online because its been hidden in the darknet for 2 years (it's basically 80% pre-mined during that time). They have the same functionality: CryptoNote's ring signatures mix transactions so that it only proves you were part of a group, not precisely who sent what to whom. DarkSend accomplishes the same thing using masternodes and pools, and it seems their degree of anonymity is similar (i.e. much more than BTC, but less than zero-knowledge proofs).

I think which one is more successful depends on which ones develops faster and gains the network effect. Ring signatures, unless they have a cryptographic weakness that we don't know of, seem pretty elegant but the size of the blockchain grows linearly with the number of peers you mix your send with. I prefer either one to ZeroCoin / ZeroCash and its well-known weaknesses (a totally blind blockchain that doesn't permit monitoring, initial RSA key that has total power over the network, unvetted cryptography of zero-knowledge proofs, etc.).

why is hashrate lower than bytecoin? while mining bytecoin I have about 5.6H/s and with bitmonero 3.4

I don't have this issue (mining on Windows 7). It starts low and ramps up over a few minutes. Is 3.4 your stable hash rate or just the initial?

A couple of Darkcoin clones (without the DarkSend feature) launching in the next few days -

* Quebec coin - x11 and DGW. Big distribution to people in Canadian Quebec, but given away over 10 years!
* CATiCoin - pretty much like Quebec coin, but distribution is to those that want Catalonia to be independent of Spain, so they want their own currency.
* Emirates Coin - they think there are so many foreign workers in UAE that there is a place for the coin as a cheap money transfer, plus use internally

they dont sound like dark clones.. more like more country shit coins!

QuebecCoin dev seems to be one of the more reasonable ones around. Whether a country coin is a viable concept remains to be seen, though.

I'm also baffled as to why the developer was in such a hurry to get this coin out the door. I suppose he was trying to capitalize on BCN's trending popularity, but unfortunately the big picture was lost.  I thought the reason for this fork was that BCN had already been 80% mined, and that we could start fresh and make the coin more accessible to everyone from the beginning, while making improvements to BCN that its devs may not have forseen 2 years ago.  If that wasn't the reason for this fork, then my post should be disregarded.

No one should disregard this comment. We can attempt to bring validity to all of this or start from scratch and bring forward a better directive with a message that stand true to the reason behind it all. This rush was uneeded and the only ones who will really care about this coin are the ones who wish to get quick on being the first to mine. If anyone wishes to produce a fork that has more focus and community orient I will be more than happy to support with donations to the cause, whether it be money or web support.

I suppose this can still work if the emissions curve is flat-ish like BTC (i.e. not as much advantage to early mining). And maybe if I hear the name often enough, I'll get over it. :\

Is there anyone with the skill to implement a GUI?

I sold off any Darkcoin I had last week. Not sure why it's taking off now. Anyway I sold it because the darksend technology is cool and all, but I can't really see the benefit. For anonymous payments you can't really beat cash, and for businesses, saying you now take Darkcoin is another way of saying "If you're ashamed to buy our stuff, here is a solution!" Err, right

Auf wiedersehen. Dark coin will be the go to E-cash. You can't compare fiat with software. Dark will also be the go to tumbler coin. Unfortunately that involves vices but oh well. Dark is taking off now because it has just become THE FIRST TRULY anonymous crypto. Businesses will use DARK because they do not want their crypto public ledgers in full view. The Chinese will use it to funnel their wealth. I will use it because I'm a hipster.

OK so maybe you tell me, what's changed? Has Darksend been in Beta until now or something??

Technology testing goes alpha -> beta -> release candidate (RC) -> public release. DRK moved from beta to RC today.

I'm glad you sold. You are too stupid to understand the bigger picture anyways. I'm sure a country coin is calling you.

Oh hello. Maybe I should buy back in because the community is so nice... Maybe I should of rephrased that. I can't see the benefit of anonymous payments over the internet unless you are trying to do something illegal.

Privacy is broader than that. Why would you want to announce your purchases and wallet balance to the world?

And as far as illegal goes, most of the things that governments outlaw have no good reason to be so. It's just government being government (always looking for something to meddle in). I fully welcome enabling individuals.

So sad ... 45 days I'm mining DRK .... 45 days I'm believing than DRK in the new standard ... 45 days I'm holding DRK.
Yesterday, I sold my DRK to try to make some BTC on trading this week-end after I see that DRK was losing price until 15 days and buy back DRK.

Just 4h ... yes ... 4h, while I hold for 45 days ! ... so 4h hour later I press the sell button and go to bed, the DRK is doing a +50% !! Sad
I loose 500 DRK in this move ... I'm so sad ! Cry

Life is so unfair sometime !!

*violins*

Let this be a warning to all ye of wavering faith. Only true believers will be rewarded.

Lol says the guy who was calling the sinking ship moments ago.  Wink

Hey, I was making an observation. I never sold or intended to. Tongue

Jeez, earlier today I was whining that DRK was trending downwards and we need a release candidate. 2 posts later Evan posts the release candidate. And now we're up 50% before I got to transfer in my last BTC and buy. Cheesy

so where do we see the price going too, i see a lot of potential any ideas?

This thread's official estimate is $250, as prophecized by coins101.
556  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BMR] Bitmonero - a new coin based on CryptoNote technology - WAITING ... on: April 18, 2014, 01:40:06 AM
I personally think this is being rushed and for what reason? The name is iffy and doesnt sound like a coin someone would want to own regardless of what it has to offer, no schematics released, no website; all of which makes it seem like it has poor dev. Hell I would have fronted the money for a site if it was needed. We could have built a community to ensure the success of a fork, but I feel you may just want to be the first.
+1

I really like the idea of forking BCN but only if it is done properly!
The code delivered by Bytecoin deserves something proper with correct stats (not only shifting the decimal as biggest change).

I think the most important change is the emissions schedule, but yes, this is rushed. The name alone may doom it.

This coin had no discussion behind it. It was pointed that the block time is too fast beyond the solo mining phase. It was kept without offering reasons. It was pointed out that the name should be voted on. Nope, and a bizarre name resulted.

Perhaps the biggest reason to fork is that it was mined for 2 years without making itself available to the other 99.9999999% of the internet on the clearweb. Yet, we wouldn't be much better if we did a launch without a GUI client and a website. Instead, we were 1 hour from launch without a Windows client, which is actually a step backwards from BCN itself (they released an easy-to-use package with a batch file for nontechnical users).

We need (1) an accessible release with (2) proper marketing (including a different name). Right now this fork doesn't have much of a reason to exist, IMO. There's no reason to release it now and work on these things later, either. All we'd be doing is unfairly mining it ahead of everyone else.

hey I clicked to reply to a thread about how WC stands for toilet in Japan. then it disappeared.  Must be manually editing the thread.  And I remembered that when playing FFXI online the Japanese players used that so often even the American started saying

WC is common in many parts of the world. It comes from British English.

So yeah, pretty terrible choice of name.
558  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][?] A new coin based on CryptoNote technology (BCN fork) on: April 17, 2014, 09:10:22 PM
Looks like everything is ready.
Bitmonero will be launched in 24 hours => Launch time 17 April, 22:00

Could you let us know what Bitmonero means?

Also, will you have binaries for OS X that work at this time (After two hours of wasted time, I can't get the Bytecoin source to compile).

Bitmonero = bit + monero
monero = mono (money) + ero (bit) = coin (esperanto language)

OS X build is a problem for me. I don't have a mac available for building and testing. In case somebody can help with building for Mac or for Windows, please PM me.

Wait, you won't have Windows available? A launch is basically a premine without a Windows client available. BCN has one, so what's the issue?

Seems DRK's price is no longer as stable with respect to BTC as it once was. Steady decline due to lack of demand. Hope we have a release candidate soon.
