LOL... LASERminer you are indeed the quote bot today To give concrete answers to Phil's questions: eghigo 80.50% 81.49%
81.50 to 81.89 say the block hits here who wins? dsppage 81.90% 82.89%
From 81.50 to 81.69 it would be eghigo. From 81.70 to 82.89 it would be dsppage. 82.90 to 83.29 same question who wins? closest a split or no one
carlsberg112 83.30% 84.29%
From 82.90 to 83.09 it would be dsppage. From 83.10 to 84.29 it would be carlsberg112.

Phil, if the block is found right now by you, traxor would get 2BTC. That would be it. If, however, traxor finds the block right now, he gets 3BTC.
I appreciate your support of the pool; however, for your own pocket, this might not be the ideal time for you to rent. It would, however, be time for LASERminer to step up and throw a rental at the pool. It's almost his round (just a few tenths of a percent off).
EDIT: yup, Phil, your edited post is correct. Your rental goes obviously towards your own mining earnings, but not towards any bonus for you until the round hits your range. That's when it makes sense to hit with the big rental - for the chance at that 3 coins.

|
|
LASERminer is correct here. If the block is found in your zone, you get 2 BTC. If in addition to being in your zone, it is also you who finds the block, you get an additional 1 BTC. There is no separate block finder's bonus. At least not for this iteration of the contest. Basically... somebody is absolutely guaranteed to win 2 BTC regardless of who finds the block (as long as that somebody is actively mining). If it just so happens that the miner who finds the block does so during that miner's guessed range, they win an extra 1 BTC - for a total of 3. So, this gives you some chance to play strategy. For example, let's say your guess is 93 - 93.99 and the pool is currently at 80. It probably doesn't make sense for you to throw a big rental down. However, if the pool is at 90, well, you might throw the rental down then. Sure, it's outside your range, but what are the chances you're going to hit that block immediately after starting your rental? I'm still working out rules for upcoming rounds. There will definitely be a range. That range will probably be around 5%. You will likely only get 1 pick - which must be made prior to the round start. The prize will be rolled over into the following round if nobody's guess wins.

My new guess is 89% - 89.99%
Please change my guess to 93.0-93.99.
Maybe even a 5% window would be good for future guess games, that way you could have some time to let a decent rental run during your period. Even my little 100TH for a couple hours moved the pool % noticeably.

Earlier I posted that it would still go to the closest. at least for this round I think it will remain that way. However, for future rounds, to win the prize the block will have to be solved in a range you've picked. Otherwise it'll roll into the next round and increase in value. I still haven't figured out all the details of how to run this on a continual basis. I'm thinking that maybe I run it similar to Phil's contest... You make one guess of a range prior to the start of the round. Will probably increase the allowed ranges. Like I wrote... I haven't figured it all out yet

New pick is 95%
If I understand correctly new rules are to pick a zone within available gaps? At least one pick is overlapping (mikestang up to 78.69% while traxor starts from 78.50%) or table needs correction? I am not arguing against new rules just want clarification because game has changed from pick spot in biggest gap to.... find any free gap at all. Therefore please fit me... in nearest gap = 79.50% to 80.49% before it's gone And I wish everybody good luck to find The Block even before my pick! I missed the overlap... but since those picks happened before the rule change, they stand as is. If the block is found during that time, both mikestang and traxor will split the prize. I have just moved an S5 onto the EU server. I'll keep an eye on it to see how things go but so far so good.
My pool user is GoJonnyGo.
I would like to register my pick of 98%.
Thank you.
EDIT - My reported Hashrate and Diff are jumping around a bit. Has the EU server the same var diff rules as the main pool? It has only been half an hour so I hope it will settle down.

Funny... after adjusting the table, there was only a single pick that was too close - and ironically it was Phil jumping in right on top of apederzoli...
OK... you now all own a 1% range. Good luck to everyone!
PS - I updated the OP to include the new 1% minimum range.
EDIT: It is STILL closest to your range that wins. For example, if the pool were to find a block right now, dennishh would be the winner even though 71.08% is not in his range.
This will change the next time I run this game. Next time, to win, the actual value must be within your range to win. It will follow Phil's contest model. If there is no winner, then the potential winnings will be added to the next block.

It seems there's a pretty solid consensus from folks that the contest rules should be changed to enforce a gap of at least 1% between user guesses. Phil makes a pretty strong argument for it - high hash rate rentals would last longer. However, on the other side of the coin is LASERminer's argument that not everyone can afford those high hash rate rentals for long periods. To be honest, I'm pretty much on the fence, and could be argued into either option. On the one hand, I believe in free choice. If somebody wants to pick 0.01% higher than me, it's pretty much up to me to pay attention if I've got some giant hash order pointed here. By that same argument, I might now be scared to rent a large rental because, let's face it, nobody can be paying attention 24/7. I might miss it when that "zone breaker" sees my giant hash rate and makes a guess just over mine, stealing the winnings. Phil, in your own "guess the diff" thread you allow users to choose a range of X to Y percent. That might be a good option here as well with a minimum spread of 1%. So for example, your guess would be 69.07% to 70.06%. So, why don't we give that a try and see how it goes. From now on, your guess will be a range encompassing 1%. If you only provide a single number, then I will assume that number to be the bottom of the range and your guess will be from that number to number +1% (as shown above, had Phil given me 69.07, his range would be 69.07 - 70.06). Alternatively, you can provide your own range. So, if you give me "88.12 - 89.11" then that's what will be recorded. The limit of your range is 1% (I don't want somebody to be able to claim 82 - 102 for example) . OK... let me redo the table with people's latest guesses as ranges. Obviously, I'm not going to alter guesses that already exist if they are within 1% of each other. To all my miners in the EU...
I am happy to announce that you now have a local stratum server: eu.stratum.bravo-mining.com
As with the pool's US stratum server, you can point your miners to ports 3333 for typical mining hardware, or 3334 for large hash rentals.
The stratum server itself is hosted in France.
Also, for those of you not in the EU, but who rent from NH (their Amsterdam proxy, not the WH one in San Jose), you might also be better served pointing those rentals to the EU stratum server.
So, to recap...
The pool now has 2 stratum servers:
stratum.bravo-mining.com (hosted in Dallas, TX) eu.stratum.bravo-mining.com (hosted in France)

Yet another example of SPV mining failing where Bravo Mining would not. Blocks 408446 and 408447 were found within seconds of each other - both mined by Antpool. Block 408446 had 2527 transactions and a value of 25.66947001 BTC. Nice big, fat block. Oh, by the way, the 0.66947001 BTC went directly into Bitmain's pockets, not the miners'. Had the block been mined here? The miners would have received those fees. Block 408447 included no transactions but the coinbase. What would have happened had that next block been mined on my pool? 2016-04-22 14:16:04 UpdateTip: new best=000000000000000004778f2511886c12cb4bbd294488ef384e3a75ea2471e0b0 height=408446 log2_work=84.532203 tx=124056675 date=2016-04-22 14:14:58 progress=1.000000 cache=52.5MiB(12838tx) 2016-04-22 14:16:04 UpdateTip: 5 of last 100 blocks have unexpected version 2016-04-22 14:16:04 CreateNewBlock(): total size 680925 txs: 683 fees: 10603787 sigops 2581 2016-04-22 14:16:04 UpdateTip: new best=00000000000000000204dcb3c5917c48573af30dd332139132138473cdc369b7 height=408447 log2_work=84.532243 tx=124056676 date=2016-04-22 14:15:59 progress=1.000000 cache=52.5MiB(12839tx) 2016-04-22 14:16:04 UpdateTip: 5 of last 100 blocks have unexpected version 2016-04-22 14:16:04 CreateNewBlock(): total size 680925 txs: 683 fees: 10603787 signs 2581
That's right, 683 transactions and another 0.10603787 BTC in fees going to the miners. Stop mining on pools that are bad for Bitcoin, and bad for miners. Mine on pools that do the right thing.
