561  Economy / Economics / Re: Is 1 bitcoin a decent and good investment? on: August 03, 2014, 04:25:18 PM
I'm saving 50$ each month to try to build one bitcoin but I fear that in some months the value will be too high.
This is called dollar cost averaging. When you buy over time, sometimes the price will be lower and sometimes the price will be higher. This will prevent you from spending all of your investible money when the price is at it's peak, but it also means that you won't buy when it is at it's lowest. IMO this is a very good way to invest in anything over the long term.

DCA is a good strategy regardless of what some investment pundits say about going all in at one time
Anyways best of luck with your task mobius it should be possible to get to 1 bitcoin at that rate if you combine it with some minor revenue generation here as well.

If not and the price booms a bonus since it will have more value ^_^
If it drops over the next few months your position will be for the better.
I didn't say this is something that I am pursuing, I am just explaining what the OP should do. Most investment advice out there that is sound will generally recommend dollar cost averaging for the retail investor as they likely do not have big lump sums to invest all at one time.
562  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the best bitcoin faucets? on: August 03, 2014, 04:18:16 PM
Unless you live in a 3rd world country where $1 is a 1/2 a day of work, there is not point in using a faucet more than once or twice.  A faucet is useful to teach new people how to install the QT or other wallet and how to send coins.  Once they learned that they should move on, not look for pennies on the sidewalk.  People are entitled to do whatever they want, but you would be more prosperous looking for loose change around a vending machine.
Even in this situation working in a 3rd world country would be more profitable then spending your time on faucets. With a faucet you would be lucky to make a penny per day.
563  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie here on: August 03, 2014, 04:15:02 PM
Thanks again for the responses.

I was trying to read up on Securing your wallet, slightly confused on it.  Are there any good recommendations on where to go and how to do this?  Like I said I am using Coinbase and do they do it for me, or is this just an online service that doesn't do much?

Thanks!
If you're using coinbase you don't really have a "wallet" to secure, rather just a login. You could however, use coinbase vault to at least make it so if your user/pass/FA gets hacked it would also require a second email and a 48 hour delay before your bitcoins are gone.
What you really need to keep your coinbase account secure is to use 2FA (two factor authentication), this way an attacker would need, your email address, your password and access to your 2nd device (likely your cell phone) in order to access your account.
564  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie DO'S and DONT'S? on: August 03, 2014, 04:12:17 PM
1.) Store your bitcoins locally unless cashing out or making some sort of quick trade.  Exchanges are notorious for being 'hacked' or going down for one reason or another basically losing everybody's coins.  MintPal and Viacoin a perfect recent example.

2.) Don't invest in mining equipment and expect to make your money back +some, it won't happen

3.) Don't trust anybody in this forum without researching them for yourself.

4.) Don't invest in cloud-hashing mining operations...ever!

5.) Don't panic if the day after you purchase your bitcoin it drops by 12%, if your purchasing bitcoin with the expectation of earning something more than you put into it more than likely you will have to hold your coin for at least 12-18 months at this point imho given all the crap regarding BitLicense in NY.  If this actually passes in it's present form I actually expect to see bitcoin prices suffer for at least the next year or so before the rest of the world picks up the proverbial slack.

Hope you find these tips useful.  Welcome to the fascinating world of crypto-currencies! Smiley

I expect prices to skyrocket after NY BitLicense as Bitcoin could become mainstream and may even be allowed on wallstreet! so it could go both ways i guess..time will tell

Isn't Bitcoin a tool to become free from the control of the Wall Street elite and the government? It seems silly to be happy that they'll get into Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is a trust-less peer to peer payment method. It is so you do not need to trust any third party with your money, while allowing it to be reasonably expect that the same unit cannot be spent twice (no double spends).
565  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: earning on: August 03, 2014, 04:05:32 PM
There are a number of suggestions on here saying that you should use faucets. Do not follow this advice. The amount you will earn from faucets is very little, to the tune of under a penny per hour.

The best way to earn a little bit of bitcoin would be to wait for your account to mature to become a member account and then join a signature campaign.
566  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: General Advice to someone new on: August 03, 2014, 04:02:59 PM
I am new to Bitcoin's and looking to get into them.  What is the main advice you wish someone would have told you when you started with Bitcoins?

Don't trust any one or any site to hold your bitcoin (okay, maybe there are a few exceptions like those highly trusted escrows)
You can sometimes trust others to hold your bitcoin for you if you can reasonably determine that they are trusted, however you should only allow them to hold your bitcoin for short periods of time. Just because someone is trusted today does not mean they should or would be trusted tomorrow.
567  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: anyone know how to trade on btcchina.com? on: August 03, 2014, 03:58:56 PM
This question is years old, but it has been bumped so I will chime in. My advise is don't try to trade on Chinese exchanges.

These exchanges are not charities yet they do not change a trading fee, nor any other fees to their customers. They pay their employees some salary, they pay for their hosting and internet access, and they have other misc expenses. Something is clearly wrong here, and I would suspect that customers of Chinese exchanges will eventually pay in some way.
568  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Would faucets be worth it if you thought Bitcoin will reach $1-10 million? on: August 03, 2014, 03:54:18 PM
You'd still be better off getting a job and buying bitcoins with fiat in the same amount of time, unless you are somewhere in the world you literally earn 1c an hour
It would actually be much less then $0.01 per hour using faucets today.

In the time that faucets gave out 1 BTC per day, BTC was trading at much lower levels. The amount you could earn per hour was about the same when you convert the BTC to fiat.

You cannot and should not assume that the price of BTC is going to rise when you accept payment in BTC, you need to use the current value. If you think the price will rise, then you should use fiat and/or other goods/services to buy bitcoin via an exchange or via trading.

The most moral army in the world demonstration again how humain they are. This solder is braging about sniping 13 children in one day and that's it is a normal accurance for him, and today US decided to restock Israel as ammunition seems to be going low

Army doesn't have a moral, it's an institute for death and destruction. I'm not too surprised about such things happening during endless war between Israel and Palestine, but rather that the guy is proud of it.  It might be a fake though.

Israel is the true beacon of democracy in the Middle East

Yeah.. there is no democracy in the west even, let alone in the middle east.  Smiley

It might fake but there are tons of videos, and reports of people doing and being proud of such things, this beyond not having morals, this is a psychopath murderer doing whatever he wants
It sounds a lot like FUD to me. The OP is doing nothing more then trolling.
570  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is anyone following the Israel & Palestine Situation. on: August 03, 2014, 05:06:11 AM
Hamas breached the ceasefire by kidnapping a IDF soldier and killing 2 soldiers shortly after.
Hamas are the problem. Once they are outed, full peace will commence in Israel and Gaza.
Most Palestinians in Gaza know that, but when they try to speak up they get killed by Hamas.
I though they broke the ceasefire by launching more rockets into Israel.

It also actually turns out that the soldier had died in battle, although it is not clear if he was kidnapped prior to being killed.
571  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Facebook International Privacy Lawsuit on: August 03, 2014, 05:02:29 AM
The European privacy laws are ridiculous. This will likely make it to the European high court and the privacy laws will be challenged.

There have been several articles in the news about people forcing newspapers to remove articles about people that shine a negative light on them, but are factually true.
572  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bug spotting: Germans hold "nature walks" to observe rare NSA spy on: August 03, 2014, 05:00:13 AM
Good to see demonstrations, the mas surveillance program is beyond madness. As Snowden said, many cases in which this data is used are actually abuses. Sadly many NSA officers go by the saying 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil'. I suggest all of you to use encryption for your data.
The amount of data that the NSA gathers, makes it so even if they do find data that could prevent an attack, they would probably not realize it and would not be able to act on it.

Even if something is encrypted, it does not mean there is no way decrypt the message/file without breaking the encryption.
573  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CIA admits to spying on Senate staffers on: August 03, 2014, 04:55:24 AM
Well I said in the IRS thread the most egregious offense in the Obama administration is the use of a government body to attack it's own citizens.  Since Senators are borderline civilians I guess we could feign a little outrage.  It needs to be clamped down and have some limitations set - I think Congress/Senate will only exempt themselves, however, just like they did with the ACA.
It is not that the CIA is spying on citizens (illegal) but it is that the CIA was spying on the people who provide oversight to them. It means they are preparing to potentially find "dirt" on the same people who provide checks on the CIA to only use if they were to try to check the power of the CIA.
574  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Breaking News. Russia is busted with delivery of weapons to Ukraine. on: August 03, 2014, 04:07:03 AM
I don't think it was any secret that Russia was supplying weapons to the Ukraine. I am not sure why they bothered to disguise the weapons like this. The separatists are generally known to be backed by Russia.
575  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Israelis chanting “There’s no school tomorrow, there’s no children left in Gaza" on: August 03, 2014, 04:05:26 AM
This looks like FUD to me (aka propaganda). Palestine has made many of these types of videos praising the death of Jews, but to my knowledge Israel has not made these kind of videos, nor have they done what the OP is claiming.
576  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: August 03, 2014, 04:03:59 AM
I'm sure as hell not voting for Clinton. Other than that I am hoping for Rand Paul. I don't always agree with him, but he has the potential to refocus the debate. Right now we've got two fiscally liberal and socially stupid parties. We need some common-sense, and yes, it may sound cliche but that includes reducing the role of government so we can have back our lives.
Clinton is not part of this poll. The poll is only for the GOP nomination for the presidential candidate.

The liberals being socially "smart" is really not true, as they give a lot of short term advantages to people, but this comes at the long term costs of fewer opportunities for people today and the people of future generations.
577  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Terrorism... on: August 03, 2014, 04:01:47 AM
I imagine it goes further than simply wanting to terrorize people, I've seen a few documentaries where these people are brought up with the expectation of doing this stuff one day & risk having their whole family killed if they refuse.....gotta love the extremest whackos
Right, the suicide bomber who is told he has 2 hours to do the job or his family is killed.  But there is no need to look at individual motive, to understand terrorism, because it is defined by it's effects on the target and target population.
This. Terrorism is designed to make people afraid. The people behind terrorism usually want to get the government of the people they are terrorizing to meet certain demands. As a general rule most governments will refuse to negotiate with terrorists so it is very rare that terrorists ever get what they want.
578  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russian liberals threatening secession? on: August 03, 2014, 03:58:34 AM
It's quite difficult to break the Western-built association of USSR=Russia, even though it's not true.
Russia was a member republic of USSR, and went under the name of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic). Though Federative was stated in its name, it had little say in its own affairs, so the soviet leaders did with Russian federative subjects and territories as they saw fit, as if that was their private property. Khushjov meddled with Crimea, Stalin with Ossetia, Lenin with Novorossia.
The USSR used to = Russia until the end of the cold war and the collapse of the USSR. Today what was the USSR is mainly Russia and other countries that used to be part of the USSR.
579  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Iron dome intercepts volleys of rockets all over Israel 29/7/2014 on: August 03, 2014, 03:56:50 AM
Meanwhile Hamas has built all these complexes of underground tunnels to smuggle weapons in yet won't build bunker shelters for their people.

If Israel ended their illegal seige on Gaza, there wouldn't be as much need to have so many tunnels to import supplies/food etc.

Not saying that would stop all weapons being smuggled but it would surely help.

The tunnels into Egypt from Gaza are for food and medical supplies and stuff, the tunnels into Israel from Gaza are solely for attacking Israel.
AFAIK there are no tunnels into Egypt, they are all into Israel. None of them are for anything that would benefit the citizens of Gaza in any way. They are all for attacking Israel.

Gaza does not need tunnels for medical supplies or food because Israel gives the citizens of Gaza food and medical supplies above ground.
580  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Yet another protest "Save Our Savers" - Inflation is destroying your savings. on: August 03, 2014, 03:53:38 AM
That's the method I found my way to Bitcoin. This is a market of BILLIONS of people just waiting to be introduced (anyone tired of the current banking system).  Give the people an option to tell banks to go fuck themselves, they WILL take it.
If you are able to earn a higher rate of return on your savings then the inflation rate, then the net effect is you have more buying power after the interest and inflation are both taken into effect. The problem is that taxes will take a portion of your return, regardless of the inflation rate, so your rate of return is really only ~2/3 of what you actually make because of taxes, so you need to make 1.5X the inflation rate just to break even.
