341  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alex Jones is pro-BTC, says his store will begin to accept as payment... on: August 11, 2014, 04:17:46 AM
I read this article yesterday that said that threads here that reference BTC as being a CIA/NSA project are actively being removed here. That isn't true is it?
LOL, not they are anything but being actively removed here. There are probably 5 or 6 threads about the US government creating BTC. So I guess Alex is behind all these threads. He is certainly a very unique chairector, and I would never say that I don't want any one person to not be behind bitcoin.
342  Other / Off-topic / Re: What would you do if you received 20 bitcoins? on: August 11, 2014, 04:07:05 AM
Someone may send to the wrong address and could be sad to lose 20 BTC. Absolutely return back to the sending address. Same as pick up a wallet containing cash, card, ID etc, what will you do?

It concerns me that there are thee posts advocating returning the funds to the "sending address," no questions asked.

Bitcoin has no such concept. When you spend Bitcoin, you spend coin outputs. Often, but not always, you must sign the transaction with a specific "address" to spend those outputs. If any type of coin mixing is involved, it may not be clear who the "sender" is. Which of the (for example) 5 "senders" would you return the coins to?
I would not advocate blindly sending the coins back to the address that the coins came from, but rather try to find someone who clearly controls the address that the coins came from to see where the coins were intended to go. You are correct that you would never be able to contact the sender if a mixer (or shared send) was used, but other then that you could probably figure out who had sent the coins as they would likely attempt to locate the person they sent the coins to.
343  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 37 BTC STOLEN from electrum NEED HELP on: August 11, 2014, 03:57:47 AM
I call BS on this. I have never heard of any hack in the history of bitcoin that the hacker did not take all of the BTC from a wallet/website unless they were somehow unable to do so. Looking at the address and the TX of the "theft" I see no reason why the "hacker" would not take the last 8 BTC from the OP.
344  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wife is pregnant, how to incorporate bitcoin into the process? on: August 11, 2014, 03:48:35 AM
Cold store some bitcoins.

And also some $10's in altcoins that are not blatant pump dump scam.

I think that the vast majority of the altcoins are pump and dump scams.

For the OP: I don't think that bitcoin is really necessary to incorporate into the birth of your child. I may recommend buying a small amount to possibly give your child for a college fund or retirement fund.
345  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-08-11] Lake Tahoe Property Sells in Bitcoins on: August 11, 2014, 03:42:43 AM
I think this is great for getting the word out about bitcoin, however from the looks of the article, it looks like the seller converted the BTC to fiat right away. I do think it is really good that people are using bitcoin for these large purposes.
346  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which Block Explorer do you use ? on: August 11, 2014, 03:27:58 AM
blockchain.info does go down some times but not very often its pretty reliable and the uptime must be near 99%.

Yes, also it is possibly the best linked node there is. There are times when it has >900 connections!
Blockchiain.info is likely the most reliable "supernode" out there and the most reliable block explorers. It is very user friendly, however you can change settings to give you more "advanced" information if you need it. It also has a lot of useful information that can be useful to both the casual user and the "dev"
347  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: coinbase fees on: August 11, 2014, 03:26:02 AM
well transaction fee is 0.0001 in most sites, so they are charging up like twice for you.. anyway most online wallets or exchanges do that.
They are really not "charging" this but rather giving the amount to the miners. They are essentially forcing you to pay to ensure your TX will be confirmed quickly. The larger your TX fee is, the greater the incentive miners have to confirm your TX in their block.
This is true. This fee that coinbase "charges" you would be "charged" to you regardless of the wallet service that you use, although I thought that they were covering the TX fee in most cases (this may have changed, IDK). If you were to try to send a TX without a fee then you would likely have to wait 13+ hours for it to confirm if it is to confirm at all, and if it does not it would be a huge headache to get your wallet to reflect the fact that the TX did not go through (in most cases)
348  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If a CEX.IO voucher doesn't expire then shouldn't I get unlimited bitcoins? on: August 11, 2014, 03:23:39 AM
The TL;DR version is that the mining rewards will eventually approach 0 as the difficulty increases. Since CEX charges a fee for electric and maintenance your actual rewards will actually reach 0 at one point.
349  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If reusing addresses is a bad idea then why... on: August 11, 2014, 03:21:34 AM
Using multiple addresses is only theoritecally less secure than using only one for multiple transactions. Any way you would expect way more than a lifetime to crack your wallet.

But if you put your private keys in risky situations(connected to computers with internet, at reach of other people that might have the idea to stole it, etc..), sooner or later the change of your keys being compromissed will be high, then it might be a good idea change address from time to time.
When you use a new address each time you send a TX you will generally use the same wallet. You also do not need to actually send a TX to potentially compromise a wallet if you have it open/loaded on a computer that is potentially compromised/risky.
350  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long have you been using Bitcoin? on: August 11, 2014, 03:18:27 AM
I've been using BTC since Summer 2011.

The market has evolved rapidly since then, but its still in its infancy.  Still, its amazing to see how much has happened since then and how far we've come Smiley
I am in the same boat as you, however I sold the majority of my coins that I mined as I mined them. I now wish that I had not done that. Do you still have any of the coins you bought/mined?
351  Other / Archival / Re: Best bitcoin faucets? on: August 11, 2014, 03:16:17 AM
Im not in a position to buy BTC off an exchange at the moment, so what faucets do you guys use?
You are not going to get any meaningful amount of BTC from a faucet. I would suggest to join a signature campaign if you want some BTC without paying for it.
I agree this is a much better way to get a little bit of bitcoin. A faucet will pay you next to nothing for hours of work.

but faucet is the best starter for newbie to learn how to earn some satoshi.
If you can make your faucet grow (like:share your ref link) it will become a great income.

By playing faucet & signature campaign, that become double income  Grin

If you use the time spent on faucet to make more posts with signature campaign and get more ref on faucets, you can get more than that "double income". Smiley
Even income from referrals on faucets are very low. It is almost certainly not worth your time to even try to get referrals on faucets.

I do agree that it is good to join a signature campaign to earn bitcoin as your posting will likely add to the community, you will probably learn about bitcoin and will make a little bit of BTC in the process.
352  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Scammers Use Bitcoins??? on: August 11, 2014, 03:13:45 AM
Hello,

I was just wondering: I am planning to buy something of a person online using Bitcoins, but what if he doesn't send me my item?
To me, a Bitcoins-dummy, a Bitcoin wallet seems like some sort of anonymous bank account because you can just fill in a fake name etc.
Now what if I buy something of this person, and he doesn't send the item to me, how can I report him or how can I know who he is? Is there a way I can use his BT address to see who he is?
I'm just very cautious as I don't want to be scammed.

Thank you very much,

Regards

My general advice is to not make *any* transactions with BTC until you are genuinely confident (not over-confident) that you know how to use it and that you understand generally how the protocol works.  There's simply too much margin for user error.
I think another good point is to only deal with other who are trusted by the community and can independently verify any statement they make. If they are not trusted and/or if you are not able to verify something then they are almost certainly scamming you.
353  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the best bitcoin faucets? on: August 11, 2014, 03:11:13 AM
I've been using faucets untill I've found this site and singed for a campaign. But here's some I've been using:

I've posted this some time ago.

First of all this can get you a fair amount of free bitcoins if you are patient, so don't expect to get rich of it, it's still free btc so let's grab as much as we can.

Second, we will be combining a few sites to max the profit.

-freebitco.in   ( freebitco.in )   this site can payout really high amount but you'll need to have a few referals in order to do so, but it's still one with the best and comfirmed payouts

-dailybitcoins.org ( dailybitcoins.org ) This is one of my favorite btc sites. Request a payment every hour, try to unleast, to recieve a payment and a VOUCHER. Now, redeem those vouchers and you can later sell them at Peerbet.org (just type in hte chat @voucher and paste your voucher code) or you can advertise with those vouchers. It is good to combine freebitco.in with coinurl and then put that shortened link, so you also get btc when someone views your ad

-Coinurl.com ( Coinurl.com ) great site if you have your blog or a website or in a combination with dailybitcoins. Don't have anything else much to say about this

-CoinAd.com ( CoinAd.com ) My favorite site. Very simple PTC faucet with a fairly high payouts that you can earn in 2-3 days (payouts take some time). Strongly Recomend this one

-bitcrate.me and coinbox.me   ( bitcrate.me )  ( coinbox.me )  Best colection of faucets, you can hit the minimum withdraw within a few hours and payouts are farely fast, every 6 hours I think. I also STRONGLY recomend these two

So these are my favorite. If anyone has any suggestion, tips, question, feel free to post. Cheers and good luck!

You also have coinworker.com, where you can get bitcoins for doing small tasks. The payout is small but higher than faucets. You can try this to get started on bitcoins.
The payout is small on all faucets. The payout is small to the point that most people would say that faucets are a waste of time (myself included)
354  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best wallet on: August 11, 2014, 03:06:31 AM
Which wallet is the best and why?

blockchain.info for the online wallet
it has BTC address, password and activation email when you registered
you back up the wallet if you forgot the password
you can add BTC address to receive BTC from the others
thanks
I think that the blockchain.info wallet is good if you will need to be accessing your wallet from multiple computers/devices. All you need is the identifier and the password and you are set at whatever (safe) device you are on.

If you only need to use the wallet on one computer then multibit is probably best as it is very user friendly and is more or less idiot proof.
355  Other / Off-topic / Re: AVG free anti-virus on: August 11, 2014, 03:03:16 AM
Nothing will keep your computer 100% safe from a keylogger and/or a screen logger. It would be possibly for an attacker to install a physical keylogger that is between your keyboard and your computer, the same is true with your monitor. This gets much more complicated if you have a laptop but is still, in theory possible.
356  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What should I do with over $4-5 worth in BTC? on: August 11, 2014, 02:56:38 AM
I can buy them off you with paypal, and you can buy anything you want Smiley.

Risky, because you can dispute the transaction later on and reverse it.  Wink
For such small amounts the risk is not as big. It is true that it has been said that people have been known to scam for even less then .01BTC however I personally don't think it would be worth it to try to scam for such a small amount.
357  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ten Minute Delay vs POS on: August 11, 2014, 02:54:55 AM
This does not solve the problem. Services like BitUndo can reverse Tx within 10 minutes even if Tx fee is paid.

Services like BitUndo can attempt to reverse a tx before the next confirmed block, but they remain very unlikely to succeed (even as per their own FAQ). BitUndo depends on miners running a customized version of bitcoind, and thus far the interest in doing so has been pretty low.
The reason their success rate has been so low is because their hashrate is low. As a result of their low hashrate they are able to mine few blocks. They are only able to reverse unconfirmed transactions when they mine a block prior to the TX being confirmed.
358  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Misconceptions of Israeli Culture on: August 11, 2014, 01:20:06 AM
Like I said in the Key Points About The Jewish Religion thread, I am not religious by any stretch of the imagination. If people were truly religious, and stoned people to death for committing sins, then they themselves would go to prison for a long time.

The Bible has a good message overall, but some of the beliefs and some of the actions committed in the Bible, as well as punishments for sins, are way out-of-line of my moral code.

True, but about 80% were written in Hebrew.
Which means there are 20% of the text that may have been misinterpreted. But then again, I have not read the religious text myself, so who's to say its not the least important 20%.
It is very well possible that all of it was misinterpreted. Both the Koran and the bible had been passed along for many generations before it was ever put in writing. If you have ever played "telephone" as a child you would know how much messages can get distorted after getting passed from person to person.
359  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SOUTH KOREA sends 720 lb toxic payload to North Korea on: August 11, 2014, 01:17:35 AM
I think people hate North Korea so much, that they forget that the people there are the biggest victims. They are brainwashed their whole life and live in a poverty more extreme than central africa!
people need to distinguish government from a group of people. i am american, and my government does not represent my thoughts and feelings, so don't blame me for invading other countries.
If you live in a democracy then you would have helped elect politicians that decided to invade other countries. If someone gives you feedback about the actions of the government, the idea is that you pass along that feedback in the form of votes.
360  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is it a bad decision to payoff mortgage early on: August 11, 2014, 01:07:39 AM
Way more important than savings rate vs. mortgage interest is mortgage interest vs. inflation (at least in the US, where the savings rate is practically 0%). It's probably one of the best times in history to get a fixed-rate mortgage (and pretty much any cheap debt you can get your hands on) in the US, but that doesn't mean it's a good time to get or keep/refinance a mortgage for you. Inflation/Fed rates have been astoundingly low, which has to eventually change, likely quite significantly where your debt is devaluing significantly faster than the interest rates you can lock into today with you having access to savings rates >0%. Of course, right now, you could use all these different "accelerated checking" schemes (credit unions in particular are good for this, but they're always named something different) which actually pay decent interest (~5% annually) if you jump through a bunch of hoops (generally, something like ACH deposit 1-3 times [Paypal] and use your debit card 5-12 times [Amazon Prime membership will do you well, here, though Meritline can be a great choice, too]), and they usually have maximum deposit limits of $5k-25k.
Most mortgage balances are much higher then this so if you wanted to keep the entire amount in "checking" then you would have a much lower effective interest rate on the money you could use to payoff your mortgage with. It is also important to understand that these interest rates on checking deposits are not guaranteed to last forever, while you are guaranteed to be due for a set amount of interest (based on the outstanding unpaid principle) until you pay off your loan.

Another point is that if you were to pay off your mortgage then you can get a guaranteed return on this money over 30 years (you no longer need to pay interest on the money you use to pay off your debt). On the other hand, if you were to invest in anything but treasury bonds, you would be taking on some level of risk and your return would not be guaranteed. When comparing paying off your mortgage verses investing in treasury bonds, paying off your mortgage would be a better investment.

Finally if you were to pay off your mortgage, you could then use the money you would use as a mortgage payment to invest in something over time, using dollar cost averaging, preventing you from investing all of your money at the market top.
Well, you can have more than one bank/CU account open Tongue -- but yeah, the more you have, the more time you'll have to spend meeting their hoop-jumping requirements, but this shouldn't be more than an hour per month per account (and this could be scripted if more than a couple accounts are needed to be open). While interest rates are at historical lows, checking/savings rates have virtually nowhere to go but up, which is why the fixed rate available in HELoCs are so attractive. I'm not interested in them, ATM -- I don't want so much at stake and would be surprised if I could get a HELoC at a good rate, but I'm always on the search for 0% credit card promos.
I used to apply/open credit cards with 0% interest rates, put everything I would normally buy on the credit card, then only pay the min payment and put the difference in a savings account and earn interest on what I would have paid to the credit card to pay it off, then once the 0% offer expires pay off the credit card. After a while of doing this I ran the numbers and it turns out that I didn't make very much doing this. It was a little bit like using a faucet (it wasn't this bad). Now especially what you can earn by doing this is even worse.
