Mark offered to put the forum behind Prolexic. (This might have already been done -- I don't know.)
5982  Economy / Services / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 4 on: October 12, 2011, 09:38:00 PM
Dree12's list is correct. Your previous bids are canceled when you post an updated bid, so Talpan will get two slots and Teek will get one.

Now that I think about it more, the minimum increment rule doesn't make any sense. Let's just say that all future bids need to be divisible by 0.5.

This auction format is somewhat confusing, but I don't think it's worth my time to write a script. The forum also offers some abuse protection through the newbie restriction and other limits.
5983  Economy / Services / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 4 on: October 12, 2011, 05:10:26 PM
Looks like someone else already bid 2 slots @ 5btc each, but their are 8 slots you are selling...so I don't know if I can bid the same for other slots?

That's fine.

Probably the best strategy is to just bid what you want to pay. I'll sort it all out when the auction ends.
5984  Other / Meta / Re: Complaints about ad auctioning on: October 12, 2011, 01:09:33 AM
You can use one of the non-default styles if you really hate the ads. I find them quite unobtrusive.
5985  Economy / Services / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 4 on: October 11, 2011, 04:54:07 PM
you have forgotten a serious piece of information... How long the ad lasts for.

Fixed. Smiley The ads last for 7 days.

If anyone was confused about this, you can cancel your bid.
5986  Other / Meta / Text for the "fun" ad slot on: October 11, 2011, 05:50:24 AM
One of the ten ad slots returns random Bitcoin info. I'm looking for more stuff to add there. I'm mostly interested in Bitcoin hints and funny/interesting quotes from this forum. (No insulting quotes, though.)

Here's what I have now:

Quote
"Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally
controlled
networks like Napster, but pure P2P networks like Gnutella and Tor seem
to be holding their own." -- Satoshi

"There should not be any signed int.  If you've found a signed int
somewhere, please tell me (within the next 25 years please) and I'll
change it to unsigned int." -- Satoshi

"You Asked For Change, We Gave You Coins" -- casascius

"The nature of Bitcoin is such that once version 0.1 was released, the
core design was set in stone for the rest of its lifetime." -- Satoshi

"The root problem with conventional currency is all the trust that's
required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase
the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of
that trust. Banks must be trusted to hold our money and transfer it
electronically, but they lend it out in waves of credit bubbles with
barely a fraction in reserve. We have to trust them with our privacy,
trust them not to let identity thieves drain our accounts." -- Satoshi

"Before strong encryption, users had to rely on password protection to
secure their files, placing trust in the system administrator to keep
their information private. Privacy could always be overridden by the
admin based on his judgment call weighing the principle of privacy
against other concerns, or at the behest of his superiors. Then strong
encryption became available to the masses, and trust was no longer
required. Data could be secured in a way that was physically impossible
for others to access, no matter for what reason, no matter how good the
excuse, no matter what. It's time we had the same thing for money." --
Satoshi

"With e-currency based on cryptographic proof, without the need to
trust a third party middleman, money can be secure and transactions
effortless." -- Satoshi

"In a nutshell, the network works like a distributed
timestamp server, stamping the first transaction to spend a coin. It
takes advantage of the nature of information being easy to spread but
hard to stifle." -- Satoshi

Make sure you back up your wallet regularly!

I'll probably remove or shorten those really long Satoshi quotes.

I've implemented a much better ad system now, so this auction is canceled. New auction:

Next round: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=48286.0

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post in every topic.

Your ad text (ignoring link URLs, etc.) must be less than 150 characters in length, and it can only contain links: no other style. It will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats: On the 27th of September, 2011 there were about 730,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 73,000 times. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the higest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- Starting bid per slot: 0.5 BTC
- Minimum increment: 0.5 BTC
- Auction ends: exactly 4 days after the time of this post

You don't have to bid higher than the last bidder, but you have to bid 0.5 BTC or more higher than the minimum bid necessary to win some slots if the auction ends immediately.

All future bid prices must be divisible by 0.5.

If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

Winners should PM me with the ad text.

Why should personal info be removed?
5990  Economy / Services / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 3 on: October 10, 2011, 01:13:46 AM
I bid one million dollars.

BTC only.

nLockTime is currently disabled in the network right now

I don't believe LockTime is disabled. Replacement is disabled, but LockTime is still enforced and "standard".
5992  Economy / Services / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 3 on: October 09, 2011, 07:21:19 PM
Because Teppy had some disappointing stats (only 204 clicks), I increased the frequency from a sixth to a fifth of all pageloads.
5993  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Around the World on: October 09, 2011, 05:40:05 AM
Since countries vary widely in population, I think it would be better to have channels for regularly-sized (population-wise) regions. Like this (but worldwide):

Is there a "buy-it-now" price?

No. I can't actually deliver the product until the current ad's time expires (in 7 days from now), so I don't see any point in allowing the auction to end early.
5995  Economy / Services / Advertise on this forum - Round 3 on: October 09, 2011, 01:07:13 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling space for one text advertisement in the rotating "News" section at the top of every page.

Your ad text (ignoring link URLs, etc.) must be less than 70 characters, and it can only contain links: no other style. It will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". It will currently appear on one out of every six five pageloads, though it may appear more or less often depending on how many other news items there are. There will be no other ads while your ad is running.

Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

This auction is for 7 days of ad time, starting when I put the ad up. (Probably you'll also get some additional time, since I'll only remove your ad when a new one is ready.)

Stats: On the 27th of September, 2011 there were about 730,000 views of topics. So an ad would have appeared on about 120,000 146,000 of these views, and also on non-topic-page views (reply pages, topic indexes, etc.). I have no way of knowing how many of these views were real people.

Teppy reports that his ad received 204 clicks with 177 unique IPs.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread.

- Starting bid: 1 BTC
- Minimum increment: 1 BTC
- Auction ends: exactly 7 days after the time of this post

If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

Whoever wins should PM me with the ad text.

(Edit: Change frequency and add Teppy's stats.)

The minimum increment is 1 BTC.

You get acclimated to these quickly. Try this, one of my favorite I-Doser ones:
http://www.2shared.com/audio/Yq0vJvVy/absinthe.html
It's basically just several different euphoria frequencies. (It's not designed to make your head explode like Gates of Hades or Hand of God.)
5999  Other / Meta / Re: RFC: new forum software specifications on: October 08, 2011, 09:02:20 AM
theymos, other than the plug-ins and addons that are being used right now that wouldn't work with the update, is there any reason why the board hasn't been updated to the newest release? It has been out for over 3 weeks now and would at least be a hold over until a new system is made/chosen.

This version is still supported. 2.x is not more secure, so moving to it would be a waste of time.
6000  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ganzfeld effect on: October 08, 2011, 08:44:54 AM
Are there any puredata patches?

I don't know anything about that.

The concept is pretty simple, so you should be able to deal with binaural beats in any environment.

Code:
pink/10 100+.5/90
This means:
- Play pink noise at volume 10.
- Play a sine wave at 100 Hz at volume 90 in one channel.
- Play a sine wave at 100.5 Hz at volume 90 in the other channel.

100 Hz is the carrier frequency. 0.5 Hz is the entrainment frequency.

In the SBaGen timings, "->" slides frequencies to the target so that there isn't an abrupt change.
