61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: November 14, 2016, 08:56:53 PM
The IP your are announcing is your public IP address.  So yes, you'll want to forward the ports to where you have it installed.  I believe there are three ports, 9981 & 9982 are the ports you want to forward.  Ther eis also 9980 which is the API port.  You want to keep this one closed and/or used for internal only.  Otherwise, someone can mess up your day.

62  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Storjcoin X (SJCX) - A Coin for Decentralized Cloud Storage on: November 14, 2016, 08:51:25 PM
I don't work for Storj, so I'm not going to fetch anything for you.  You'll have to do that for yourself.

The way payment happens right now, is that Storj is paying farmers during the beta.  They distribute 1 million coins (I believe) and depending on how many farmers there are, each gets a percentage of that amount.  You earn more if you have a constant up-time, you have active contracts and you are holding data (Not just offering space), and if you have 1,000 SJCX as collateral (Although this feature may not be implemented at this time.)   So the amount you would make varies by all of these factors.

Even when Storj is out of beta, you would only make what people are going to pay you for storage.  Depending on how available your shared drive is, and the speed of your network, will ultimately determine how much you may make.  Without question, the algo will likely provide contracts to farmers who are older vs new.  The longer you are involved as a farmer, the more contracts you will appreciate.

To your last question...

What happens if someone uploads something forbidden.  At least at the outset, you would not know this.  All data being uploaded is encrypted, and split up.  Your shared drive would contain 8 megabyte encrypted chunks of data that you have no way of seeing.

Law enforcement would likely reach out to the Storj team, or whoever hosts the Bridge.  (Anyone can host a bridge, but the bridge handles payouts, so likely Storj will manage the bridge for most farmers.)  The Storj team would "likely" provide information to law enforcement, and if provided the files, could purge them or at the very least, prevent the files from being downloaded via the Bridge.  (Which is essentially required.)

Storj isn't meant (AFAIK) to be a darknet.  It's meant to give you control over your data and keep anyone else's eyes off of it.

Now that all being said, the actual file system currently allows files to be uploaded unencrypted and retrieved unencrypted.  So it is currently possible for someone to upload an illegal file to you, and you would be hosting it in the clear.  You would still be legally protected under the same rules that govern ISP's (At least in the United States.) but it could still be a nightmare of legality to deal with.

Storj farmers will eventually be able to determine what kind of data they want to host.  I don't know the details of this, or how they intend to actually patrol this other than mimetype tags.  Encryption may also never be mandatory.  I haven't heard word about this either.  If the intended use of the KFS system is to branch into other applications beyond file hosting, it may not be something they'll want to implement.

It is still early days, and Storj is coming along fine.  A lot of these issues will be taken up and dealt with as they get closer to the official launch.  When that happens, more details can and will be provided, I'm sure.

In my opinion, Storj's strength lies in the torrent like downloading apparatus that it uses.  Rather than being tied to one host's upload limit for your whole file, you can start downloading 100 pieces (Or more or less) of your file at once.  This provides maximum utilization of your download bandwidth.

You'll get better help on Rocketchat community.storj.io

Right now, Storj is in beta and storage is free but not guaranteed to remain available until it emerges from beta.  So you are storing files at your own risk.

File storage can be replicated up to 10 times.  The default is 3.

They are going to introduce error correction, so that should help prevent loss of data.

You get paid based on how much you are sharing, how much of that is filled with data, and if it's available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  You also get paid for Telemetry.

So if you are sharing 3 TB and you don't have any data being used, it's probably why you didn't get paid very much.

But if downloading is free, aren't you just inviting 100% utilization of the available bandwidth?

For instance, if I'm hosting partial data, and Netflix decides to house all their motion pictures for streaming on the service.  That would mean those hosting the data would be delivering that data constantly, and it sounds like potentially multiple times if the file is very popular.  In exchange for a few dollars a month?  The economics of that won't work for most people.  Especially if their Internet is being bogged down by all the requests for data on their services.

Granted, Netflix isn't realistic, but this is just an example.  The point being that there is no penalty for downloading, so everyone can expect their bandwidth to be 100% eaten once they've acquired the files.  Plus, what's the incentive to hold old files?  If I get paid when new stuff is created, and paid when stuff is uploaded.  Why would I then hold old data?  Wouldn't I be better off clearing that data away to make room for more new data?  Storing and distributing it doesn't appear to benefit me at all.

between miners and fiat investors, just how diluted and subject to miner (and other) dumps is this coin?

There doesnt seem to be much buy support - under ...057 there's nothing really.

Miner dumps are frequent but the coin isn't really worth much regardless.  Development on the project continues but is slow.  Not sure how funding will really impact that.  I doubt it will change anything in the short term.  Most updates are months or more away.  The current offering, especially the GUI, leaves a lot to be desired and is not ready for commercial use.  But it continues to be developed.

More than likely the coin value will settle somewhere in the 50 satoshi range for awhile, until positive production news emerges that makes the client useful. (Months or more) At which point, we might see adoption of the tool and a desire by third parties to purchase coins for storage use.   But right now, it's a pump and dump coin.  Ride the wave...

Dead in the sense that it is worth nothing.

I believe this coin is dead, again.

The guy from CryptoCoders or whatever started a new coin instead ->  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1434700.0

I believe their concentration is on this coin, and no one is working on Hiro.
74  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DECENTRALIZED crypto currency (including Bitcoin) is a delusion (any solutions?) on: July 07, 2016, 06:58:25 PM
I don't speak Esperanto.

Your idea of a shared economic incentive is interesting, but it has to be enough to outweigh the costs of mining or in other words, hosting the register and handling transactions.  Electricity and equipment are real costs that need to be paid for.  Unfortunately, those costs are often too high for transaction fees to be enough.  (Especially with an infant currency)

Of course, you'll have "believers" who will host it at a loss, but those decay unless use eventually provides the financial incentive to make it worthwhile.  Depending on how bandwidth/power/instruction hungry your process is will determine what that break even point would be for someone.

Even with slavery, someone is still paying for the gold miners to mine the gold.
75  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DECENTRALIZED crypto currency (including Bitcoin) is a delusion (any solutions?) on: July 06, 2016, 04:01:35 PM
So long as mining is profitable, it will centralize to the person/organization/country who has the means to profit the most from it.  Yet without profit, you will hinder adoption.

It is a challenge to prevent centralization and be able to provide consensus rapidly enough for transactions to make sense for the consumer.

It's a difficult model.  You can (likely) solve the problem in code, but the other half of it is the non-code adoption of the currency by the general public in order to make it decentralized and effectively hosted so that the ledger/currency can exist and function.  So you have to incentivize.  And thus, you create centralization.

I don't know how you solve this.  Smart people are constantly thinking about it.  TPBB has an idea that may or may not solve it.  Still, the algo solution may not solve the issue with adoption.  You have to have both if you want your currency to thrive.

77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: June 03, 2016, 05:13:43 PM
Question - And if this is the wrong place to post this, let me know and I'll ask where it is appropriate.

I have the Ethereum / Mist wallet installed.  It has 0 Ethereum in it.

I bought some Ethereum on Poloniex.

I sent a small amount (0.1) to the wallet's base address.

It runs out of gas.

I can't tell Poloniex to add more gas.  (At least no where I've seen.)

Is this a Poloniex issue?  Or does my wallet need to have Ethereum in it, to pay for the gas?  (Which would be difficult to have, if it is empty)  Do I need to do something differently?

Can someone make a overview what happened to Spondoolies-Tech?

Are they Chapter 11?

Yes, you would have an alt-coin.  Bitcoin is flawed because it leans towards centralizing.  You cannot fix this with the current Bitcoin model.  You have to rely on the altruistic promises of the corporate miners to keep your funds safe.  That's just how it is.

Various other gambling services exist on the net, that utilize provable fair betting.  This is not new.  And these services aren't rolling in cash.  While the market for professional, highly marketed, casinos likely do make a lot of money, I see little incentive for them to switch their systems to PP.  You may have a better system, but you're taking money off the top, so for a casino operator, your solution offers negatives rather than positives, since you would be cutting into their profits.

How do you market this technology so that casinos will want to adopt it?  If their system already works fine for them, and their audience sees that it is fair, what is the difference that PP is going to give them that makes them want to switch?  Switching back-end technologies is surely painful for these operators.  I don't see anyone lining up to do this, so they can share their profits with the world.  Probably be a book keeping nightmare come tax time.
