61  Economy / Economics / Re: Food security in the world has been shaken by Russia's actions on: March 21, 2024, 04:30:40 PM
Do not forget that this is the third year of a rather bloody and brutal war. Ukraine was attacked by enemy forces that were many times superior in everything, and above all in human resources.
Thanks for admitting it. In fact, most Ukrainian trolls claim Russia is fighting using sticks and stones.  Grin

I can neither confirm nor deny the facts presented in the article that are happening in this village of Makiv in southwestern Ukraine. Events may be distorted, but somewhere there may well be excesses with mobilization.
Western media have no reason to distort facts in Russia's favour.

Approximately the same state of affairs is occurring in the occupied territory of Donbass and Luhansk region. They have been writing there for a long time that there is practically no male population left. The Russians have already forcibly mobilized absolutely everyone they can and the populated areas are practically empty.
I'm not sure, I haven't heard of such a fact, frankly. But if you check out some videos on Youtube, something like "life in Mariupol" or "Crimea today" you can see quite a lot of men in the streets there.

But not all is well with human resources in Russia itself. During the war, the irretrievable losses of Russians range from 350 thousand people according to the United States to 433 thousand according to the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Ok, let me tell you something: do you know how Ukraine is counting Russian casualties? I'll give an example: imagine there's an APC driving somewhere in the vicinity of the frontline, it gets hit by a drone, for example. Now the most interesting part: this APC can carry (for example) 12 troops plus the driver. So, AFU automatically add 13 KIA and marks APC destroyed. In reality this APC may have been empty (except for the driver obviously) who got wounded. APC itself may have been towed to the Russia-controlled territory and fixed. That's why there were lots of tanks which were "destroyed" 3-4 times by the AFU. You see the difference, right?   Grin

and about 505 thousand according to the data reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense to the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Patrushev.
Source? I presume Ukrainian media, right?  Grin

Please don't use Ukrainian media as a source. It's 100% pure propaganda!

Some of today's headlines:

Sabalenka's bf passed away at the age of 42! Shocking loss for the world #2 right before the Miami Masters tournament!  Sad

Tonight we're going to witness the return of the former world's #1 Simona Halep. The Romanian will be back on court just 9 months into her 4 year ban. The was allowed to compete after a successful appeal. Tonight she's going to face Paula Badosa. That is going to be fun!

What is wrong with Medvedev?

His mentality is often like this. If he'd won the 1st TB, he'd have played a lot better.
He has huge fluctuations in the matches he's playing, you can never know what to expect.

On his dominant surface he shouldn't ever be losing sets like the 2nd one he lost yesterday.

Alcaraz is a deserved winner after all, he beat Zverev, Sinner and Medvedev for the title. By far the most difficult draw from all players in the tournament.

Yeah, in fact only Djokovic in his draw would have made it harder!  Grin

Alcaraz showed some great performance, perhaps his best this year, but Medvedev was not on top of his game too, that's true! He had runny nose and was coughing intermittently so I suspect he was a bit sick. Definitely not an excuse, but that's what I spotted during the changeovers.
67  Economy / Economics / Re: 2024 & Prediction of World War III - Effect on Cryptocurrencies on: March 18, 2024, 06:51:19 AM
Do you want to say that after the surrender of Germany in May 1945, the million-strong Kwantung Army of Japan, which was an ally of Germany and was armed with over 1.2 thousand tanks, more than 6.6 thousand guns, 1.9 thousand aircraft, over 30 combat ships and boats did not pose a threat to the eastern borders of the USSR at all? In fierce battles throughout August 1945, the irretrievable losses of Soviet troops amounted to 12 thousand people, medical losses - 24.4 thousand. Was this damage caused by those who were unable to resist? Why then didn’t Japan capitulate earlier than September 2 and fought stubborn battles with Soviet troops for almost a month? In a national radio address, Emperor Hirohito announced surrender to the Japanese people on August 15, but the Japanese army continued to offer serious resistance for a long time.
We are talking about war crime committed by the US regime and the lack of justification for it, not what could have happened between USSR and Japan. As for any battles that took place between the two timeframes, that's due to lack of negotiations which is the only reason why any wars stop. US regime wanted to test its nukes somewhere which is why they refused to negotiate peace with Japan so Japanese kept fighting a little longer than they wanted to.
I agree that from a military point of view there was no need for the US to drop nuclear bombs on the peaceful Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and that these were, in fact, US war crimes.

In the current situation, Putin’s Russia, although they declare that they are open to negotiations with Ukraine, however, the precondition for negotiations is the consent of Ukraine to the fact that the occupied territories of Ukraine remain with Russia, and this is unacceptable for Ukraine and for the entire civilized world. More and more states are being drawn into this bloody and brutal war, and therefore the threat of World War III is growing rapidly.

Oh, cool, now could you answer me: was any US official prosecuted for this act? Any international court orders issued to arrest president Truman? Were there any sanctions imposed on the US by the international community? Were US sportsmen banned from international competitions?

Check and mate, Bozo! Now I'll go get some popcorn and waiting for your answer which will be quite entertaining I suspect....  Grin

Missed both semis yesterday due to rain delay. It was too late and I went to bed unfortunately missing these two great matches.
Missed whole tournament because of poor hours for my time zone. Hopefully I will be able to catch something of the final. Odds on Medvedev seem like bookies are not rating him high enough on his best surface (by some margin). Again difficult to judge without actually watching them play but I think he should get at least one set, which pays nice @1.68

This match is 50/50 for me or maybe 60/40 to Alcaraz, nowhere near what the odds suggest.

Hey Trofo!

Yea a lot of the matches are in our sleep time.

The Mens final has just started so a decent time for us.

Medvedev is 3.15, I have a small bet on him eventhough Alcaraz looks so strong in
this tournament. The H2H is 2:1 to Alcaraz on hard courts... I agree though that
the odds seem very skewed

On the WTA side Swiatek had what looks like an easy win over Sakkari, even Bagel'd
her in the second set. 6-4 and 6-0.

Yeah the match was very similar to the 2022 Indian Wells final where Iga defeated Maria 6:4, 6:1.

Men's final really tight so far: it's 6:6 and tie break will start in a moment.

70  Economy / Economics / Re: Food security in the world has been shaken by Russia's actions on: March 16, 2024, 11:48:42 PM
Yes, the situation is complicated, it’s stupid to deny it. I hope that Ukraine’s other partners will help us withstand a new wave of “meat assaults” from Russia. Yes, there is a loss of equipment - this is war. But passing off the destruction of 2 Petriot air defense systems and 2 Abram tanks as a “super success of the 2nd Army of the World” looks sad, against the backdrop of more than 5,000 tanks and a dozen S400 complexes (or rather batteries) lost by the Russian Armed Forces!

But at this time I would like to note:
- The main method of “liberation” of Avdeevka by Russian terrorist troops was the use of heavy gliding bombs. Yes, it is virtually impossible to resist them. But the Ukrainian Armed Forces have found solutions - if we cannot resist these bombs, we will destroy... the aircraft that carry them. In February-March, more than 20 terrorist bombers were destroyed.
- At the same time, successful actions on the territory of Russia are carried out by the Russian liberation troops as part of the Legion "Freedom of Russia", "Siberian Battalion", "RDK", as well as the detachment of the People's Liberation Army of the Republic of Ichkeria that joined them. As a result of their successful offensive, some part of the Belgorod People's Republic has already been liberated, the forces of the border troops of the FSB of Russia, and the warehouses of the RF Armed Forces have been destroyed.
- Over the past 2 weeks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with the Main Intelligence Directorate and the SBU, have carried out several very successful operations to destroy the oil industry of the aggressor country. Refinery refineries and oil depots, which generated approximately 15% of all fuel in Russia, have been disabled. And this is the beginning. Russia’s vaunted “unparalleled air defense,” as expected, turned out to be fake and could not withstand ordinary drones.
There are still many interesting events ahead on the territory of the aggressor country Smiley

You are delusional. Ukraine is like a living corpse, a zombie controlled by the US, forced to fight till the last breath. Ukraine is facing a really hard choice atm: draft 500000 civilians and completely ruin it's economy or continue losing territories and troops. In any case, they are going to lose eventually.

Btw, here's a nice article I found for you. Perhaps it will help you to wake up:

Quote
MAKIV, Ukraine — Few men of fighting age are left in this village in southwest Ukraine, and those who remain fear they will be drafted at any moment.

Their neighbors are already hundreds of miles east in trenches on the front lines. Some have been killed or wounded. Several are missing. Others from this rural area — about 45 miles from the borders of Romania and Moldova — have fled abroad or found ways to avoid the war, either with legitimate exemptions or by hiding.

“It’s just a fact,” said Larysa Bodna, deputy director of the local school, which keeps a database of students whose parents are deployed. “Most of them are gone.”

Ukraine desperately needs more troops, with its forces depleted by deaths, injuries and exhaustion. Despite Russia’s own enormous casualties, the invaders still far outnumber Ukraine’s defenders, an advantage that is helping Moscow advance on the battlefield. Ukraine’s parliament is debating a bill to expand the draft pool, in part by lowering the eligibility age to 25 from 27, but few decisions are being made in Kyiv that will quickly answer the army’s urgent needs.

Civilians here say that means military recruiters are grabbing everyone they can. In the west, the mobilization drive has steadily sown panic and resentment in small agricultural towns and villages like Makiv, where residents said soldiers working for draft offices roam the near-empty streets searching for any remaining men.

Locals use Telegram channels to warn of soldier sightings and share videos of troops forcing men into their vehicles — stoking rumors of kidnappings. Some men are now serving time in jail for refusing to sign up.

“People are being caught like dogs on the street,” said Olha Kametyuk, 35, whose husband, Valentin, 36, was drafted in June by soldiers who approached him and asked for his papers after he stopped for coffee on the main road outside Makiv. Despite a diagnosis of osteochondrosis, a joint disorder, he passed his medical exam in 10 minutes, she said, and deployed to the front, where he was wounded.

“The whole village was taken this way,” said Valentin’s mother, Natalya Koshparenko, 61.

Natalya Koshparenko, 61, outside her home in Makiv. Her son, Valentin, was drafted after stopping to buy a coffee last summer.

“Almost all our men have been scraped out,” said Serhii, 47, an infantry soldier from Makiv who was drafted in March 2022 and serves in Ukraine’s 115th brigade.

Home for a short break this month for the first time in a year, Serhii said he had already been stopped and questioned. So had his son, who is only 22 and not yet eligible to be drafted. The Washington Post is identifying Serhii only by his first name because of the risk of repercussions.

When the soldiers realized he was already serving, he said, they asked how he felt about men “‘who haven’t seen a single day of war” — which he said he regarded as a forced, hollow show of camaraderie. Serhii said he replied by saying it was them, not his fellow villagers, he resented most.

“You’re military and I’m a civilian, but I’m fighting and you’re not,” he said. The conversation, he noted, “ended immediately.”

Oleksii, 30, was fixing his car last year when soldiers approached and handed him a draft order. It was Valentine’s Day and the news broke his girlfriend, Elvira, who works in a small shop in Makiv and barely ate for weeks afterward. Oleksii accepted his fate, but his experience has served as a warning to others about the realities on the front.

After three concussions and shrapnel wounds, Oleksii recently returned home. Scrolling through his phone, he showed a photo of him with more than a dozen fellow troops. Only two are still alive, he said.

This month, villagers in Makiv buried another of their own — Ihor Dozorets, a contract soldier who was wounded so badly that his son, also a soldier, identified him only by a scar on his hand. “He wanted to come home,” Ihor’s sister, Inna Melnyk, 43, said through tears. “He was tired of it all. But what can we do?”

Vasyl Hrebeniuk, 70, said that even at his age — 10 years over the draft limit — soldiers have regularly stopped and questioned him in Makiv.

Six weeks ago, he watched soldiers bang on a neighbor’s door, complaining that the man who lived there had asked to go say goodbye to his wife and mother, then disappeared. One soldier said they “should have taken him immediately, put him in the bus and driven away,” Hrebeniuk recalled.

Scenarios like these have left Polina, 16, anxious about how much longer she has with her father — one of the few draft-eligible men left in the village.

Last summer, Polina and her friend Olha were relaxing at a table outside the village store when Olha’s dad called and asked her to buy something for him there. She brushed off his request, saying she was busy with friends. He walked to the store himself instead, and the teens watched in horror as soldiers surrounded him and handed him a summons on the way in.

Maya Proskurivska, 63, is hiding the truth about her son-in-law, Oleksandr, 41, from his children, who are 8 and 14. Sent to fight in the Donetsk region, he has been missing since December, she said, but the children think he is confirmed as a prisoner of war. These days, she said, “on our street, it’s hard to find a young man.

“There are people hiding, sitting at home, not even willing to go to the store,” she said. “I saw a car today where the woman was driving and the husband was hiding behind tinted windows in the back.”

The young men cleaning her yard acknowledged that they fear the draft. But Artem said he also resents men from eastern Ukraine who came west for refuge instead of staying to fight. “They came here to hide, and our guys have to die there,” he said. Artem’s father, who was drafted, is now fighting near the eastern city of Lyman.

Down the road from Makiv, in the small city of Kamyanets-Podilsky, a growing gallery honoring the dead fills a main square. Each photo shows the face of a local man or woman killed fighting for Ukraine.

On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States used nuclear weapons for the first time in human history to force Japan to surrender in World War II. The attack killed 70-100 thousand people in Hiroshima and 70 thousand in Nagasaki. The death toll, including those who died from radiation sickness, exceeds 500 thousand.
As we see, there have already been cases of the combat use of nuclear weapons, and the paradox is that humanity never learns from its mistakes.

Ok, thanks god you admit the Americans did it. I thought you were going to say Putin is to blame.  Grin Grin Grin

In recent years, we have seen how Putin’s Russia, carrying out a military invasion of Ukraine and trying to seize this state, also periodically blackmails the world with nuclear weapons.

Where have you been for the last two years or so? At least, try to read the headlines: Macron: I can't rule out sending of NATO ground troops to Ukraine. President of Latvia Rinkevics: Russia should be destroyed. And many more similar headlines threatening to destroy Russia as a country. So in this situation Russia doesn't blackmail anyone, merely trying to defend itself from aggressive US sockpuppets.

This state will, under any circumstances, defend itself to the extent possible, even if nuclear weapons are used against it.

I think you underestimate the power of the nukes. Ukraine will turn into a uninhabitable desert. There will ne noone left to defend it and nothing to defend.

In this situation, international organizations, and primarily the UN, should have taken tough preventive measures, but the UN is practically inactive, and therefore there are virtually no deterrents for Putin. The Fuhrer of Russia, dying of old age and illness, may well decide to launch a nuclear attack, if only in order to deprive him of a trace in human history, even if in such a terrible way. The people of Russia and Putin’s entourage themselves could have prevented Putin from this madness, but they are afraid to even write against him, and hundreds of thousands of people are being driven to the front in Ukraine to be slaughtered. Russians are dying like silent cattle and don’t even moo.

Like what kind of measures? What kind of measures can be taken against a global nuclear superpower?  Grin

The third world war, if it has not yet begun, could break out at any minute. But those who are dead or dying from radiation sickness do not need cryptocurrency.

WW3 is not going to happen. Because it would mean our civilization will cease to exist. Is it too hard to understand, colonel?  Grin

A bit surprised nobody mentioned Aryna Sabalenka losing to Emma Navarro of the US yesterday which was kind of shocking. I watched the match and I should say it was one of the worst matches performance-wise for world #2 this year and probably also last year. Navarro did well and she is a new face on tour so perhaps that also helped her a bit. Those angles were super-cool, that ace from the 2nd serve for example!

P.S. Sorry strongkored, I missed your post, you beat me to it!  Grin
75  Economy / Economics / Re: No petrol/diesel car sales by 2035/ Reality or dream? on: March 12, 2024, 08:54:52 PM
Got some two topic related things to discuss.

1. Starting from 2025, some Europe countries are planning to make EURO 5 and EURO 6 diesel cars exhaust system annual technical inspection more strict. Which means, cars with cut away particulate filter are going to have troubles passing annual inspection. Why this DPF filter is needed? To make diesel exhaust more ecology friendly. Why people cut them away? Because replacement of this filter cost 1-3k EUR (filter is costly, replacement procedure cost is low as it is rather simple).

2. Mercedes-Benz reducing EV production, as sales and demand is low. Maybe this is due to brand is expensive and people prefer cheap EV. Maybe this is due to low demand on EV in general. Give me your thought please.

I am not really surprised with the second point. Those who purchase luxury and sports cars still prefer gasoline or diesel run vehicles. I would say that EVs comprise for less than 1% of the market share in the luxury segment. And millionaires usually doesn't care about their own carbon footprint, although they are very vocal and supportive in fleecing the middle-class in the form of additional green taxes. So it is a good decision by Mercedes-Benz to move away from EV production. They should rather stick with the tried and tested tactics.

Weird, I mostly see expensive EVs in the streets: Teslas, MBs, e-trons, Porsches etc. EV is expensive: you need chargers, solar panels, that kind of stuff for comfortable driving and use.

77  Economy / Economics / Re: The impact of war on global economy. on: March 12, 2024, 07:13:30 PM
The Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service said the Kremlin is preparing for a possible conflict with NATO that could arise in the next decade, in particular by moving to a mass army model.
Nobody cares what that US sockpuppet has to say. Estonia is de-facto governed by the US. These poor Estonian guys just literally receive their press-releases and speeches from the US embassy. The Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service = CIA. They keep whining about Russia attacking them for like last 20-25 years or so already.

As the intelligence report explains, Russia's intentions are evidenced by army reforms initiated by Russian Defense Minister Shoigu. In particular, the Russians decided to eliminate the joint strategic commands and return to the model of command and control by types of forces and special forces. Thus, in the northwestern part of the Russian Federation, the Baltic and Northern Fleet will be transferred to the direct subordination of the Russian Navy, and the air defense will be subordinated to the Aerospace Forces. Military districts will begin to function as territorial military commands.
How can these reforms be a proof of Russia preparing an attack on the Baltics?

Another change: on February 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree “On military-administrative separation.” Now in Russia the Western Military District (WMD) will be disbanded, and in its place the Leningrad (LPO) and Moscow (MPO) military districts will be formed, as was the case before 2010. The decree, according to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), is a sign that Russia is preparing for war against NATO. This is due to the fact that the LPO will now cover the area along the northeastern border of NATO, and the MVO will border the northeastern part of Ukraine and Poland. This does not stretch the strategic focus, as in the case of the Western Military District, and will allow the Russian Federation to simultaneously field troops against NATO countries, optimize command and control over troops for waging war in Ukraine.
This is Russia's response to a further unreasonable NATO expansion (Finland + Sweden).

Germany has already developed a secret plan in the event of a “dramatic scenario of a hybrid large-scale Russian attack on NATO’s eastern flank” in the summer of 2025.

The first stage, according to the German military, will begin this spring with the additional mobilization of 200 thousand military personnel in Russia and the successful spring offensive of the Russian army in Ukraine until June this year. In July, Russia will begin, first covertly, and then increasingly overtly, an attack on Western countries using cyber sabotage and other hybrid methods of warfare - mainly against the Baltic countries.

In September, Russia begins large-scale Zapad 2024 exercises in western Russia and Belarus, in October it deploys medium-range missiles and builds up its troops in the Kaliningrad region, ostensibly to preempt an impending NATO attack. In fact, Russia plans to seize the narrow Suwalki corridor on the border between Poland and Lithuania and stage a border conflict there in December 2024 with numerous casualties. In May 2025, NATO decides on deterrence measures to prevent Russia from attacking the Suwalki corridor from the Kaliningrad region and from Belarus.

And then, in conditions of temporary anarchy in the United States after the presidential elections, Russia repeats the Eastern Ukrainian scenario of 2014, but on NATO territory. On “Day X,” the NATO commander-in-chief orders the transfer of 300 thousand alliance troops, including 30 thousand Bundeswehr soldiers to NATO’s eastern flank. It is not clear how the escalation ends: on the 30th day after “Day X”, half a million heavily armed Russian and NATO soldiers will confront each other in the area of the Suwalki corridor.
