61  Other / Off-topic / Re: Between a male and a female who needs education?? on: February 19, 2023, 09:53:45 PM
It probably depends where you are but education can set and keep people free, a lack of education generally leads to the opposite too.

Women don't have to lose their names either when they marry, or their homes and both generally move quite a bit in wealthier countries (either on their own or with others). If you can afford to educate both and are in an area where both can work (or could work) I think it'd be highly recommended you do - you have more chance one does well in life too.
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin NFTs Challenge the Blockchain’s Largest Use Case: Money on: February 18, 2023, 10:31:27 PM
Are there usable NFT gaming tokens on bitcoin's network already? Is there an NFT marketplace? You didn't seem to link the article so these aren't things I'm able to quickly find, but I doubt both at the moment (the main nft gaming platforms are still in altcoins).

I also doubt adding to an ecosystem can detract from it. There's no suggestion bitcoin can't be used as money and have NFTs on its blockchain.
63  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Combination of Paper, MOF and AI can provide ultra military grade protection on: February 18, 2023, 10:22:09 PM
It's possible to do something like this for a paper wallet but there might be limits to it's security unless the "secret code serifs" had general ways to decode them and could be encrypted with other ink that can be read in a different way. It feels a lot like the idea of printing something and hiding words in what you've printed by making them tiny in the words you're printing.

I think a lot of people would have concerns their data is backed up correctly in this case too. It's an interesting way to provide a backup if there's other methods you can restore from that are less prone to being damaged.
64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Companies working on Bitcoin on: February 18, 2023, 01:03:41 PM
I thought microstrategy was a data analytics firm?

Also is there something specific you're looking for, are you after recommendations for investments or just looking at what companies are available? There's quite a lot of blockchain related companies too that seem to go missed in mentioning these types of companies too (like uniswap and bisq) just because they're not incorporated but may turn out to be good long term investments (of course, nothing's guarenteed and uni seems to have done badly recently).

There's only a handful of companies that come up with a Google search too, marathon and dcg/foundry seem to get a lot of mentions.
65  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin as gift on: February 18, 2023, 12:53:43 PM
You might want to do it discretely and get him another present too but I think it's a good idea provided he knows how to use it or you give him clear instructions (including virus scanning any software he imports it too and writes down his mnemonic - for wallets like electrum or backup the wallet file for ones that don't give a mnemonic)...
66  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: how to get block height for given day on: February 18, 2023, 12:46:31 PM
Can you do by just subtracting 144 from the block height per day you're looking?

If not, I'd still recommend doing that and then looking up the api for a block explorer (like blockchain.com) and trying to programmatically go back (or forward) from there based on how many blocks would have come since. I remember blockchain.com's api indexing blocks based on height and hash (not sure how others do it but it's probably an easy enough place to start and get a json of data, and then checking the time the block was received or generated).
67  Other / Meta / Re: The coins bellow my name on: February 18, 2023, 12:42:40 PM
There's a full explainer here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178608.0

You get a new coin whenever you rank up (up to hero). You rank based on activity and merit and you can only receive 14 activity points every 2 week period (so there's no point making tons of posts if you've not got much too say but if you do have quality discussion or info then you might earn merit from it either way and may boost your account and rank there).
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: can wallet to wallet transfer be hack on: February 18, 2023, 10:14:48 AM
There's no cryptographic/on chain risk of this.

You can have funds intercepted in your wallet via malware though such as clipboard hijacking (where what you copy gets changed before pasting it in the wallet).
69  Economy / Economics / Re: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway buys even more AAPL stock, ditches TSMC on: February 18, 2023, 12:05:38 AM
Increasing investments in paramount and apple might be a "don't buy the news, buy its competition".

Viacom (paramount) was greatly undervalued back in 2020, the CEO unleashed a tactic back in 2021 which was quite badly judged but it collapsed the stock and made them rename (the collapse was because half the stocks market cap was taken as a loan to cover an expansion into becoming a streaming service). They still seem like they're a solid company and make solid returns. The issue with them is likely that investors don't care about what they'll get in 10 years, they care about what they can get now (also paramount seemed to have loans they were paying 8% interest on which isn't too reliable - I think the majority was 3-4% though - this info was gleamed from a bond exchange 2 years ago, things might have changed).

TSMC facing issues would likely make apple bring chip production in-house (or at least within the neighbourhood) they'd probably get a decent chunk of profits from it either way.
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tainted coins on: February 17, 2023, 04:00:50 PM
This is an argument against seizing coins and not one that's for it really. If you had the same problem but mixed your coins or put them through a dex or held them as a privacy coin, this wouldn't be a problem you'd ever have to deal with.

Realistically:
1. Exchange marks and seizes coins
2. You explain how you got the coins and how you paid for them (showing proof where you can).
3a. Exchange unlocks the coins when they're satisfied you've provided all the evidence needed.
3b. You start mediation and then take the exchange to court for the money you've lost because what the exchange is doing isn't fully legal at this point.

Washing coins probably damages the ecosystem as much as holding coins damages market cap (two very precise groups of people just attacking each other over something that doesn't matter as much as you'd expect it might if you listened to either group).
71  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin's age of legal competence on: February 17, 2023, 03:48:10 PM
You can't mine with bitcoin core. You'd have to purchase or rent electricity and hardware which could be refunded the same way (from the conpany they bought them off).

Can children under 18 work there and be paid?.if so that's probably how a lot of ways to come across crypto are treated.

I'm from the UK and started here when I was about 14, it was hard to get crypto aside from using faucets and then my sig space on here because of the restrictions (I merely wanted to test how it worked). We don't have the same restrictions on buying things though, I remember first using a debit card when I was 13 to buy a game for my DS.

Can children purchase things from abroad there, how is that handled?
72  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 17, 2023, 03:37:03 PM
When did you write to them? They can take a few days to respond sometimes.

$1k isn't a lot to consider risky though with an established mixer like this one that's been running for years. They've had huge amounts flow through that have been withdrawn without issue (except traceability).

What happened to your first $300, if that was stolen why didn't you put less through it (at least to eliminate the chance it's your computer/malware that's to blame).

Also you might've posted too much information above for chipmixer to be able to help you and verify it's you (ie someone else can now use the information stated above to impersonate you).
73  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor T showing wrong balance? on: February 16, 2023, 11:40:58 PM
Have you used your trezor at all? It's possible this 0.0042BTC is on a change address. Your last (few) outgoing transaction(s) might confirm if this is the case on a block explorer (see if there's an address an amount of funds are sent to is there or not that you didn't choose to pay yourself).
74  Economy / Economics / Re: Eu Cina vs USA russia oil vs Green energy on: February 16, 2023, 02:41:18 PM
China do have lots of oil too though, seems like your version of events is just a China win regardless.

Russia would already have been using its power to prevent green energy, it's greatest influence was probably the fact it was peaceful and countries thought they'd be a reliable (/ethical) source of oil which they've now disproven.
75  Economy / Economics / Re: The fear of global recession is real or just a speculation? on: February 16, 2023, 03:25:02 AM
Yea I agree with this but developing countries will still suffer economically. Somehow developing countries that are dying in the hands of corrupt and incompetent leaders struggle really hard to move forward and learn from past experiences. The world around them learn and invent different ways to deal with issues while they are just content on how things are because they don't give a shit if the country gets better or not.
The other issue here is that it's fairly normal for a government to borrow money or receive financial aid during a recession and the higher the corruption, the more debt that could end up being taken by the whole country to be used for and by just a few people in control there (if they're corrupt enough and there's little able to make them leave - especially if it isn't publicised).

We need to judge each country according to their respective circumstances, a country which is still developing but which has a low amount of debt and it is self-sufficient when it comes to food and other key sectors will probably do fine, however many developed countries could do terribly during a recession as they are the most heavily indebted countries around the world and the room they have to maneuver is very tight.

I don't think this is really a problem unless the recession is huge or lasts a long time. The sector a recession hits and the epicentre of where it affects feels it for decades to come, everyone else doesn't really. If a recession hits and GDP falls, the same amount of people are often still looking to produce things and within about 3 years, the economy can adapt to the new climate of what's needed and wanted in an area and gaps can be completely filled by then (companies spring up during recessions from people hoarding cash because the gamble is normally considered worth it - especially when most other things are collapsing in value).

A lot of people also contribute to the efforts of regrowing the economy by completely giving up or changing course from what they were doing (which is likely easier in a wealth country) - many people (especially young) thinking of joining the workforce or who have been recently employed and sacked (/fired) because of the recession may turn to education instead and improve their skills ready for when the market picks up - a lot of people in the 2008 crash getting jobs have seen their wages stagnate because so many applied for jobs during a recession (in the US, this hasn't happened as much in Europe).

A lot of developed countries may be overleveraged but they're normally all part of the same house of cards (and have to stop each other from collapsing as most economies are unable to survive without both imports and exports).
76  Economy / Speculation / Re: All of the World’s Money and Markets in One Visualization on: February 15, 2023, 09:59:23 PM
One of these became popular during the 2017 bull run and bitcoin took up one square on its own iirc and that was it (I think each square was $200bn). A lot has changed since then.

I didn't think a single company would break the valuation of $2tr for quire a while and then apple was worth $3tr (not sure if that happened before or after I thought it). I also thought a lot of markets were beginning to stop growing a few years before they did (about 3) so there was a bigger rise than I speculated for. Even with all this, I didn't think a $6tr market cap for crypto or bitcoin was far reaching, particularly over a larger timeframe of 4 or so years. At the time this was equivelant to the majority of the UK's property market and the market cap of gold (both have risen quite a lot since too).
77  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Suite Update. [23.2.1] on: February 15, 2023, 07:47:15 PM
The improvements you quoted actually seem like quite significant ones (address poisoning, taproot rbf and coinjoin). I don't think taproot is well used at the moment and I think it was satoshi labs that were trying to make their own coinjoin/privacy based service too so those are both very proactive improvements that might not be used yet but will have been around for so long when they are that they'll have the added security of that (if the code is older, there's likely more people to have seen it and audited it).
78  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Choosing between your relationship and gambling. on: February 15, 2023, 05:17:49 PM
Why does she care so much? A year sounds like a very quick engagement too but what does she want him to do with the money instead?

If he had no other use for the money, gambling with it might not be too bad a thing if he's got a good paying job anyway. Taking himself away from gambling too would be much healthier than having someone else make him do it.

It sounds like she's in it mostly for the money (that could just be how you've worded it but it does sounds like she's a problem).
79  Economy / Economics / Re: SEC's wildest move on Staking business | Go Non Custodial Staking for security on: February 14, 2023, 02:24:56 PM
Before this was announced I was looking into the UK's regulations on exchanges (I wanted to invest in concentrated liquidity pools) and found that while there's a lot of restrictions on what you can do as a centralised exchange, there's NONE on dexes. I viewed this as quite positive news at the time and I'm not sure how positive it is now because it does mean that if you know what you're doing, you can receive good rewards from it and if you don't then you should maybe just speculate and hold the asset or do safer staking (like the one you suggested from the wallet).

Cex staking seemed like an opt-in procedure so I don't know whether it made sense to come after that - the "investment pools" exchanges like bybit and binance operate though I'd expect to be next. There's not really much education on what to expect from either afaik (although I have barely looked into them - particularly coinbase eth).

80  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is there an effective way to stop a gambling-addicted person? on: February 14, 2023, 02:10:42 PM
How did you find it out? If he told you then maybe he wants help if you just came across it because he left his computer open or something then it'll be much harder to approach the issue.

Why don't you find a local gambling advice or debt advice charity and see if they know anything that might be useful (such as what normally leads people in that area to addiction, what sorts of things addicts can replace gambling with to still get a similar experience from it so they're less likely to go back to it).
