621  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How Binance CoinMarketCap Index will work? on: October 18, 2022, 01:48:37 PM
They've not been explicit on what they're actually doing (and that's probably because you can do it yourself if they were).

https://coinmarketcap.com/indices/

They're not managing the funds themselves though, a German company I haven't heard of is. I don't know how I'd expect a fund like this to do, with so much rebalancing (every quarter) would there really be a chance at strong growth when a coin's profit gets realised. I can also imagine this under performing bitcoin in bull times and catching up to it in bear periods.

In telegram group, when different account chat you and asking to help you then you know they are seeing a new catch or prey to eat up, run away. Admin is the only account to respond to with care because you don't have to believe everything you hear.
Telegram groups are full of scammers. They try to impersonate real admins and scam newbies.

Rules are don't talk to members who DM you first. Don't send them private key, wallet seeds, password. And definitely don't send them money.

It's fairly easy to just block people on telegram and also to not know whether someone you're talking to exists or not in my experience.

There's a lot of additional scams not mentioned here but I think op mentioned some relating to them as well as not doing any sort of trading with people you haven't met on a forum too might be a useful one to consider (unless you use an intermediary/escrow that you've found and can trust).
623  Economy / Economics / Re: Personal Flood Prevention/Sensitization Project. Any Ideas? on: October 17, 2022, 09:54:51 PM
Old cities were never planned, it had just been created thru the accumulation of the residents its why cities have no flood control projects.
Diverting the river I think will work because they can release the water from there slowly but it would be a huge project as well that would need billions too.

From an area that has never flooded, we have a huge floodplane built really low down so that when water levels rise or the rain falls particularly heavy, all that happens is a few extra fields get flooded. I think a tiered floodplane is one of the most efficient ways of dealing with flood water in this way (and having multiple troughs and areas of vegetation to take water away before you have to panic).

Most river diversion plans are great though as it gives you an opportunity to build a deeper and wider trench that's much less susceptible to flooding surrounding areas and preventing the water from doing things like turning might also help to increase the flow of water away from properties without and increased risk of a bank breach.
624  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: New York and its very complicated Bitlicense on: October 17, 2022, 09:46:08 PM
Is it possible to circumvent this with a vpn too for a lot of sites or is there tougher legislation about that (such as proof of address).

This probably adds the an argument of trying to make things more decentralised. Convert to cash with a large company (I assume coinbase and binance are still operating there, binance is operating in the UK illegally still lol) and just use dexes for converting between cryptos (and stable coins).
625  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New Youtube Scam in Action on: October 17, 2022, 09:39:39 PM
I've seen exchanges that push their client's orders through other exchanges offer their own token too which might be a scam in itself (or just wishful thinking by the exchange). It's probably more scam if it's done without offering a market for the token or some sort of buyback.

I don't think this is a new scam trend though - just don't click links and type domains out where you can or search for them in multiple search engines (after scrolling past ads).
626  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Recover bitcoin from old computer on: October 17, 2022, 09:32:51 PM
Omitting the characters you have likely still makes you identifiable (especially since block hashes are quite easy to search through if you've got the blockchain in front of you).

You could try taking out the private keys and exporting them into electrum (from electrum.org) but if the address doesn't have funds on a block explorer, something else might be an issue (perhaps if you've spent the coins or the block didn't broadcast correctly).

You could also install an up to date version of bitcoin core for the best privacy but it might need a lot of time to sync and a lot of bandwidth.
627  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: BANK OF DUCK - Fully Redeemable NFT and CONFIDENTIAL ASSET Service on: October 17, 2022, 09:19:19 PM
Who pays the transaction fees for redemption and how long do you expect redemptions to take?

I'm not sure how welcome this would be as a service, it's certainly a new way of doing things but presumably funds invested are hoped to be deposited somewhere that'd bear interest for your team too (and pay you) such as dex pools?
628  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Will you be influenced by your favourite celebrity? on: October 16, 2022, 09:44:40 PM
For addicts or people recovering from it I think content like this could be pretty damage them and cause them to bet high on something like this. For everyone else, I'd imagine they could follow a bet like this with $1-10 for entertainment and still get that out of the game/wager.

I don't think an advert like $840k bets are in good taste though either, although most people probably know how to edit page sources these days so might consider it a bluff.

Also, if you're posting about spending $800k I hope you're not the one managing your account with the level of spam you'll probably end up getting from something like that.
629  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: The future of Axie Infinity on: October 16, 2022, 02:50:46 PM
I think it depends on how much money the devs have made. A lot of ico projects started bringing in about $20 million around that time, if they made anywhere near that and had belief in their project, they could really make something quite cool out of it.

I just doubt they will... I think axie is going to end up going down as another shitcoin but there's probably a good incentive for the developers to make something more and build on it. They did a lot of damage deciding to give less slp to users and completely tanked that token too which probably hurt their reputation quite a bit (I think they should have upped the axs spend on breading instead and I'm not sure why they didn't).

Edit: looks like they raised $153 million at the start of 2021, I wonder what that was spent on.
630  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet not syncing to blockchain on: October 16, 2022, 02:31:38 PM
Did you close the application and run clear-cache.cmd?

I'd recommend doing similar to the above but you probably just need to move your electrum data folder somewhere else and start electrum (using your nmemonic to recover the wallet).
631  Economy / Gambling / Re: All the truth about Crazy Time! Is Crazy Time Rigged? on: October 16, 2022, 02:18:50 PM
Based on the link you provided, it looks like higher odds bring a lower chance of winning on a turn-by-turn basis as the house edge remains fairly stable throughout all the game types.

Provably fair games were made as a way to escape this sort of thing though, perhaps you should find one of those or something else that's less likely to be rigged if you have doubts on the wheel.
632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can i post satoshi posts in other forums here? on: October 16, 2022, 02:10:01 PM
If you post them just make sure to include a link to the original source so you're not done for plagiarism (also if the source is considered bad, your thread might be deleted anyway as you're quite new to the forum so consider that before posting things).

I don't know how interested people are here in working out who satoshi is, you'll probably get some level of discussion though.
633  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to get all addresses and associated txs for an XPUB with Blockchain.com API? on: October 16, 2022, 02:01:06 PM
Why didn't you give us an example of what's in the txs?

When testing this with an xpub the two main things I can see that are probably useful are "balance" and "result" that come with each transaction (or seem to).
634  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: As a web2 dev who wants to enter the space, where would you start your journey? on: October 15, 2022, 10:17:39 PM
Sounds like you've already started?

Generally the best way to start is to learn, however is best for you (Videos, books, activities (/doing), podcasts or a mix of them).

I've not looked much at Web 3 but if you want to learn to program for it and chains like sol use the same language as ethereum then I'd start there (for the very cheap fees). You might also want to look into testnet versions of smart contract places so you can spend even less trying to learn how to do things - or fork the chain yourself and practicnoff that (I assume there are standalone sandboxes for almost every chain).

A lot of nft games at the moment seem to be built off eth and harmony one and harmony one if you want to go down that route too.
635  Economy / Economics / Re: MNCs and it’s impact on developing countries. on: October 15, 2022, 05:27:51 PM
There's a drawback yo both that hasn't been mentioned here which is the money that's also taken away from the local economy and the country. A company generally moves into somewhere because it intends to make a profit (some just do it for exposure and market share too but mostly it's about profit). These companies then find ways to avoid paying taxes on these profits by exporting them to another country with 0% or low tax rates. If the government of a country then tries to recoup this loss by adding licensing fees or other fees (such as import tax) they'll risk losing further investments from larger companies (and this is problematic if there aren't many companies wanting to invest to begin with).
636  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC: cutting the trace on: October 15, 2022, 02:16:04 PM
Some dexes might also be built on chains that are similar to bitcoin so you could trace where the fund have come and gone from (perhaps explicitly or otherwise). It probably looks obvious on places you spend coins if the underlying protocol takes a % of a fee and batches it with your trade transaction as a smart contract, this would mean external sources might be able to track where your "change" is and denonymise you that way.

That's excluding the other issue of sending fixed amounts to mixers or exchanges (are you going to analyse this)? A non custodial dex might be a "safer" alternative than a mixer (fewer devices to hack - although a mixer acts well fairly autonomously and has their own funds to prove they're secure) but comes with the risk of making you easier to denonymise (most dexes aren't marketed for privacy mixing - they might be a good step to include but aren't great on their own) if you send a specific amount that looks odd or the dex doesn't have high enough volume to mask your trades.
637  Economy / Economics / Re: Meta has burned $15 billion trying to build the metaverse on: October 15, 2022, 02:05:30 PM
I think Facebook's metaverse spending spree is probably more of an existential issue than one that'll be fixed soon, they might even find more things to attempt to invent in the meantime while making themselves even less efficient.

They seemed to have problems going down the route most other big tech firms did by selling cloud computing (I think this was particularly because of how slow Facebook's servers have always been). The metaverse might go like those games available on Facebook too (messenger particularly). Google then got instant playable games that didn't ping all your friends who played the same game with your score whenever you played it...

I don't know how long I haven't heard of the progress of their project which I think has stalled in the last few months. If I look at crypto-based metaverse projects that seem to be fading, I don't see any hope that Meta will achieve the same success and fate as Libra in the past.
On the other hand, Facebook is the only platform that is becoming increasingly unclear on its orientation.

Most games can now have tiny teams and fairly small budgets. I've played some good games that have a core team of about 80 devs.

For the biggest mmo rpgs I can think of:
Final fantasy 14 has 400 devs
World of warcraft is estimated to be 100-300 people

I think these VR experience builds will become cheaper the more they're built though too. Most of what's needed for AR and VR is already out there - I bought a game on steam back in 2017 and was given a VR version of the game (I didn't play it that way though because I don't think it'd have been that much different).
There will likely be the first few attempts at the metaverse before it comes a lot cheaper to produce though (unless someone like unity tries to take it on straight away). Films also became more expensive to produce somehow even though a lot of their editing and production costs became cheaper (mainly because of the cameras they need iirc) this could be something that happens with the metaverse too.
638  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Trouble pruning Bitcoin Core when installing to a USB drive on: October 15, 2022, 03:46:44 AM

Thank you. I added -prune=500, restarted Bitcoin Core, and I’ve been waiting to see what happens. It fluctuates, but I’ve lost about 4Gb of storage, so it doesn’t appear to be working. So far it’s taking about 20Gb of storage.

Afaik pruning just removes old blocks after it's enabled, your chainstate directory will not be pruned and will continue to grow as the chain syncs (though it might not grow at the same rate as it already has). You should be able to confirm if this is the case by checking the size of both your blocks and chainstate folder on the USB drive. It's possible to split the data directory across multiple drives if you need too but if you want the speed of USB 3.0+ then you're probably going to need a bigger USB stick (I can't find accurate figures of how big both are at the moment though).
639  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Depth chart - what the hell are these percentages? on: October 14, 2022, 07:51:49 PM
I think it's either:
Price variation of how much the price would vary after that point is hit (considering its moving less than $190 that'd make sense but I don't know why its 0.0%.

The other reason I could think it's that is it's how much depth in the book you've reached up to that point (there's normally a lot of Bid and ask orders far enough away from the current prices to.make those figures close to 0.0%). I think this one is what it was on bitmex but they used to tell you how much money it'd take to get there too (in orders).
640  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buy back bonds and BTC price on: October 14, 2022, 05:30:23 PM
The UK has £1.6 trillion in "gilts" and the central Bank offered to buyback up to £65billion and barely anything happened to the markets (except currency and stock market boosts) - perhaps the US could see the same but I think these were mostly from the bank intervening and it's unclear whether it was just that that boosted confidence and not the buybacks (especially since the £65bn limit was nowhere near being utilised - it was about half by the end of the first week so they might've paid up to £40bn on it I can't find where the data is).
