641  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: change real btc against real Monero on a DEX: Is this (technically) possible? on: October 14, 2022, 03:20:52 PM
Yes bisq is a good option for a dex that can do this. If there's a dispute they get you to ensure you use a wallet that supports extracting relevant details (in the case

It looks like bisq is not listed here:
https://coinmarketcap.com/de/rankings/exchanges/dex/

Or do I miss anything?

It's probably because it doesn't have many coins and isn't an instant exchange like the other ones are (it functions a bit differently as a lot of the others have pools they get liquidity from).

I've used the waves exchange before too (that's on the list). And it seems good (but also seems a bit random/I don't know how it works).
642  Other / Meta / Re: Small poll for BitcoinTalk lovers on: October 14, 2022, 02:44:18 PM
If you're doing it just for fun then sure. If you're doing it to try to make a profit then you'll probably not get much or any custom.

I know there are people that invite their friends and family to this forum but I think those are few and far between and people probably don't want it to be a talking point among others or risk their privacy.
643  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A poker website, but with chess/checkers/backgammon? on: October 14, 2022, 02:34:30 PM
A question like this kinda concerns me because it can be botted much better than humans can play it - obviously it's less fun but there's an incentive to do it then.

If you have leagues or ranks (like the free to play games do) then it'll probably be better too but there's still the chance you're playing against a bot and could have your wager taken in too many games. You'd probably be surprised what people run bots on these days I've seen it be run on mmo games where a bot looks like it'd be difficult to code.

I think I remember gambit having a few board game style games (back in 2015) - they used to accept bitcoin but had licensing problems (I think I'm remembering the name right).
644  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Curiosity question on: October 14, 2022, 03:02:11 AM
Everything you need and the answer to your question are spread all over different threads which i have recently came across as i am still going around studying the forum.

check out " The most iconic bitcointalk threads. History on Bitcointalk.
This thread has the full history of bitcointalk how it was created, its first name and the people involve, the first few lines will give you your answer.

Ownership has actually changed since then. Theymos and Cobra reached an agreement to split bitcoin.org and bitcointalk.org completely and release their half control of the others' domain.
645  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC NOT BACKED BY ECO SYSTEM on: October 13, 2022, 08:24:26 PM
ETH AND OTHER MAJOR ALTS HAVE ASSET BACKING AND REAL USE CASES. FOR EXAMPLE - FOR ETH; SMART CONTRACTS CAN BE USED IN CONTRACTUAL DEALS.
SPECIALLY ALTS HAVE ECO SYSTEM. BTC DOES NOT HAVE.

Bitcoin can have other things built on it too (like backed tokens - the only thing real world exchangeable in the entire cryptospace going from your own definition). What are you going to make out of those smart contracts that are tangible and usable except other tokens?

It can't enforce contracts well either external to its network (yet at least - for eth).

Bitcoin is a secure distributed blockchain and network, its value comes from the security of the network and its community's ambitions for building on it, supporting it and using it.
646  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Theoretical question about multicurrency hardware wallets. on: October 13, 2022, 08:13:13 PM
On a slightly different point, the processor in a hardware wallet is actually quite powerful for what it actually needs to do.

When you enter your seed into your hardware wallet(s), it generates a master public key that's sent to a server to query if your wallet has funds, that's all that happens. The software on your computer asks the device for that information when you connect it or when you make a new wallet.
647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Altcoins? on: October 13, 2022, 08:00:40 PM
If you're going to regret not doing it and you've found an altcoin you like that's generally and repeatedly performed well (and you expect to do 20-50x, why wouldn't you put 5% of what you're investing in it)?

Bitcoin is the best investment for stability but if you think there is a good contender that can do well in terms of market cap and you're going to be annoyed you didn't invest, a profit is still a profit regardless of how big it is and 2xing your entire portfolio (or even just adding a few % to it to me sounds much better than losing it all).

If you don't care about altcoins or decide everyone's heard of bitcoin it's their go to for crypto investments so altcoins might perform badly because of it - then stick with just investing in bitcoin.
648  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: change real btc against real Monero on a DEX: Is this (technically) possible? on: October 13, 2022, 04:19:44 PM
Yes bisq is a good option for a dex that can do this. If there's a dispute they get you to ensure you use a wallet that supports extracting relevant details (in the case of monero) to affirm the transaction went through and allow them to release the funds - I don't know if this is prone to social engineering but I doubt it, especially if it's automated.

Non kyc dexes are also a good choice and might have more competitive prices depending on how much you're wanting to buy and sell and how long you're wanting to wait (if you open a trade on bisq you might wait a few hours for someone to take your offer - in my experience you can close a trade within about 30 minutes after that if the other party is responsive enough the longest time is normally block confirmations).

For question 3, I don't think this is a good option if you're after maintaining privacy (ethereum is worse than bitcoin for privacy).
649  Economy / Economics / Re: Competition in business on: October 13, 2022, 02:25:07 PM
Most free market laws and regulations also make attempts to block monopolies from succeeding in a lot of countries too (I think some manage to stunt their own growth as well though - there are many companies with monopolistic intentions that don't work out how to export themselves well or don't look at how diverse the market they're trying to monopolise over elsewhere is).

There are companies too thst have learnt franchise approaches with entrepreneurs are a much better way to go than obtaining a complete monopoly over an industry (but that can also birth competition too if some of those entrepreneurs band together and make their own version).
650  Economy / Economics / Re: Global recession alarm, safe money on: October 13, 2022, 02:16:51 PM
Buy land, gold, bitcoin and other valuable assets you know that their worth will keep appreciating in long term. Also go for lucrative businesses in your area.

Companies are probably where the investment gets focussed here imo. If they're all putting up their prices in line with inflation then quite a lot should make a decent profit out of it (most financial institutions have put up staff wages by 20% already, that money will have to go somewhere as well as the extra money the banks are getting in higher interest - and other companies will have to get in to cover buying new stock and emergency funds just in case their stock increases in cost more rapidly than they expect).
651  Other / Meta / Re: Skipping to the next/previous post by the same author (SMF patch) on: October 13, 2022, 01:56:34 PM
I was thinking of a very simple △▽, but now that I see it, it looks more like a diagonal arrow in both directions than 2 individual up and down arrows.
Okay, I see. I didn't try up/down arrows laid out horizontally, and now that I see them; I agree with you, they do look a little confusing.

Would it take more than a line break in the "report to moderator" button (so it stays at the very bottom) and one in those two buttons to make it vertical though?

<br> works for HTML, I'm not sure if there's something for it on php or if this would be too much adapting for the stylesheet.

I'm really not sure how this can be useful in a thread. When I read a thread, I don't or barely look at the poster/username. What I only check is the content but yes, after reading the post if I found it good quality, I'm definitely looking at the author.

For some very long discussion threads on certain topics I could see it being useful to determine whether the op has changed their decision since making the thread (and not updated the op as often happens). It might also be an interesting idea for checking what users have posted before on a certain thread too (perhaps if someone makes an interesting post on the wall observer, you could jump between what their last ones were without having to search through 10 or 20 pages). This is something that can already be done with he search function (but search does weird things sometimes).
652  Economy / Economics / Re: Uber Doordash plunge after regulation proposal change to worker classification on: October 13, 2022, 02:16:54 AM
It'd make sense if these laws were added to employees oblnly after a certain threshold of time was passed (such as 20 hours a week or 80 hours a month - or however long half the average number of hours worked by an American is). This feels like it'd just be an extra tax paid by those companies too and paying an extra 20% on fares or delivery costs doesn't sound too bad (if they'd be able to cover health insurance within that - if it became higher than a few dollars then a lot more restructuring might be required or advertising/launching services in other countries where that's less likely to be a problem).

I think a government owned health insurance company will probably come out in the US, but that'll be a long time away and require quite a lot of reconstructing (reducing their gdp by 30% doesn't sound like it'll please a lot of people).
653  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #btc Hashrate Reach New ATH a day ago, will the bull run has begun? on: October 13, 2022, 02:03:19 AM
I don't think there's yet been a clear reason given as to why hashrate has spiked so much. There's probably a lot of explanations for it though (like excess electricity production that can't be stored might have made some rates lower in countries - such as nuclear power during the night).

The fact that it rose and then dropped might say something else too. Could this be a mining firm testing miners work before selling them whenever the next halving/price spike is (particularly a large producer of hardware).

It's possible some people have invested in producing their own electricity and powering miners with it to generate more profit than they'd get from the grid (but I think this number will be very small).
654  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About the future of bitcoin - What are you worried about? on: October 12, 2022, 08:55:01 PM
I agree that doesn't put all money into Bitcoin, because it's much volatile and anything could happen at any time. However, even on beta software, I am still not worried.
Honestly, I'd really like to know some opinions on what the risks might be if bitcoin was beta software, have you thought about it?

I think it'll stay until there's no more significant changes to the code like has been said above. It might remain in beta for a long time more and I don't think that's a problem. Sometimes companies release beta updates a week or two before the main stable update and make them reversible - we might not yet know if we need this with a future bitcoin fork.

One of the main things I can see aside from forks is mining. What if someone somewhere produces really powerful mining chips and has a monopoly on it by being able to mine at a low rate (this might be on the extreme as it'll probably not take too long for companies to catch up and compete but it might pose a risk still too).

I think it's kept with bitcoin core also because it's a flage that might welcome feedback and people to join the team to fix bugs and submit reports maybe that one bug that doesn't do much now could do a lot once a feature it effects gets implemented differently.

A lot of companies also come out of beta to charge people to use their software too - like Microsoft did with windows 10.
655  Economy / Economics / Re: Central authority can be biased. Referring to TikTok on: October 12, 2022, 02:24:48 PM
I'd imagine tiktok has gifts worth different amounts depending on where you live. If you're as likely to deposit and withdraw gifts (for example in Europe, Australia or the US) you could probably expect the tiktok to be taking less of a cut and giving you about the 70% that's normally quoted. If you were living somewhere like Syria I could then see the gifts might be worth less because of the area you're in and the greater chance o someone withdrawing gifts than one of them depositing gifts (perhaps they're "smart" with this too like being able to locate poorer areas everywhere and keeping their gifts lower than where they'd be expected to pay higher.

This is a similar (but worse) strategy of how goods in rural areas/villiages are much more expensive than cities because of the size of population and ease of transportation (even though people living in cities were often wealthier when this was a thing).

I'm more concerned at how many people are throwing money at these sob stories without the realization that their money never even gets seen by the subjects in the video suffering from poverty. The fees that impact the donations are part of the problem, but the bigger problem is social media grifters exploiting suffering children for their gain. Tiktok is a malignant tumor on society.

Are there good places to donate money to these days though too? A lot of charities have issues with being inefficient, volunteers being hard to audit or their attempts to receive more donations than they need to to fund campaigns (such as claiming work they haven't done as their own). It'd probably be hard to go out to places and actually work out what help to prioritise to people too. It's easy to help local organisations that are normally very open and make themselves easy to examine but aside from that I'm not sure.
656  Other / Archival / Re: Another Reminder for New Investors on: October 12, 2022, 01:55:47 PM
Most notable ICOs have been evaluated to have done better than btc at some point for gains. The issue with this is its normally picking the Sell price as the ath of the coin or token (you're not going to know what that is until it's gone).

I've seen ICOs go for runs up to 3x immediately after they're listed on exchanges, just to flop back down later to zero (not sure if this is an internal attempt at manipulation from the ico team or not).

Bitcoin is the best crypto so far for long term investments though thst might always change too (it's certainly most notable in press releases though and it'll probably remain the dominant coin until something is mentioned a lot more than it and for a long period of time).
657  Economy / Economics / Re: New ETF Plans To Make Opposite Trades Of Jim Cramer's Recommendations on: October 12, 2022, 02:56:57 AM
This Jim Cramer thing has now escalated to a whole new different level. I'm not sure if things are still made purely out of and for fun or it has already shifted more seriously. As soon as huge money is put on the line following the opposite of Jim's recommendations, that's not anymore a joke. But the joke's probably on them. That for me is simply financial or investment irresponsibility. It's pure gambling.

I'm thinking this too. Investment bankers taking leveraged risks on people's funds based on a TV personality does sound like something that could end badly.

I think it was suspected that he's being paid to represent some stocks too so large holders can get out or enjoy a pump before the stock falls (if they suspect it will soon) if this is the case what stops them from doing the opposite just to devalue the fund and profit further (or will there be enough checks in place to ensure this can't happen, can enough checks even be put in place)?

A fund that shorts a lot of shitcoins will bring no value to the operator imo (or they'll charge really high funding fees). You've then got things to ascertain too, like are doge and xrp shitcoins, do most coins belong in that category aside from Bitcoin and some coins that either haven't been made yet or have communities so small and hidden their market caps are insignificant?
658  Economy / Gambling / Re: Stake.com does not deem crypto earnings as legal on: October 12, 2022, 02:48:32 AM
If it's worth claiming (either fund wise or spite wise) have you checked to see if you can file a tax return and if they'll accept one. From what I've read about proof of earnings for the UK, it looks like the second most document that's used for things like this (the first being letters of proof from a person's employer).
659  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: is there any pos coin clone from bitcoin on: October 11, 2022, 09:28:05 PM
Apparently there was a bitcoin stake at some point when the 2017 fork contest was going on (I think the contest was to see who could make the most annoying amount of noise Grin).

The issue with these forks is they don't get much interest or volume for long. Why make another Dash when it's already a thing.

There's probably been other and there will probably be far more then we'll ever need made after the next hard fork too.
660  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC: different address-types, Not all were found in the blockchain explorer on: October 11, 2022, 09:17:56 PM
The blockchain explorer just hasn't updated their system to include bech32 (native segwit) addresses.

General advice would be if you find something that doesn't accept native segwit, it's probably got a lot of problems with it so it's safer to stay away from those services. It's not a new update anymore, it's about 5 years old.

Addresses are compatible, 1 type, 3 type and bc1 type addresses can all send and receive funds from each other.

3 prefixed addresses are nested segwit as they're designed to look like legacy multisig addresses so they'll validate in any checker that a multisig address would (likely programmed into the block explorer).
