Bitcoin Is Dead (Again), Long Live Bitcoin (Again)Oh, the drama, such drama. Last week longtime Bitcoin developer Mike Hearn declared “the Bitcoin experiment…has failed,” and marked his resignation from that community with a fusillade of verbal grenades (and a New York Times profile of his dissent.) This in turn provoked a whole torrent of hot takes and reactions, which mostly had one thing in common: contempt for all who disagree. Bram Cohen, the founder of BitTorrent, wrote Hearn’s rant off as “whiny ragequitting.” Greg Slepak posted a detailed, point-by-point technical rebuttal of Hearn’s accusations; a redditor did much the same on /r/Bitcoin, as did Ron Gross on Medium. Vivek Wadha declared “R.I.P., Bitcoin. It’s time to move on,” for the Washington Post, and posted the same article under a slightly less inflammatory title, er, here. Which in turn provoked another angry line-by-line response by Sam Patterson. Are you exhausted yet? http://techcrunch.com/2016/01/23/i-dont-want-to-go-on-the-cart-oh-dont-be-such-a-baby/

Haiti called off Sunday's presidential election after violent protests erupted on Friday and the opposition candidate vowed to boycott the vote over alleged fraud. Pierre Louis Opont, president of Haiti's electoral council, said the runoff vote was being pushed back for security reasons. He did not say when the election, which the U.S. government is helping to fund, would be rescheduled. The announcement first sparked jubilation among the demonstrators on the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince, but the mood quickly darkened. Gunshots were fired as protesters clashed with police. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-haiti-election-postponed-idUSKCN0V02HF?utm_source=Facebook

"Buenos dias," Salvador Alvarenga said to his friend, who was propped up in the bow of their fishing boat. "What is death like?" Ezequiel Córdoba, his body hardening and turning purple, did not reply. So Alvarenga answered for his dead sea mate. "Good. It is peaceful." Alvarenga looked out to the horizon, the ocean as endless as it had been for the last two months that they'd been lost at sea. "Why wasn't it both of us? Why am I the one who continues to suffer?" Alvarenga asked the corpse. He remembered Córdoba, hysterical in the early days, crying about his mother and starving for tortillas. But in his final hours, the suffering lifted. Alvarenga craved the peace Córdoba had unfairly found by dying. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/08/world/rewind-real-life-castaway/index.html

‘Case’ Wallet Promises Easy, Secure Bitcoin Transfers
Since the introduction of bitcoin in 2009, the digital currency has received a lot of attention: some good, some bad. From both technical and social perspectives, it has become an often-complicated phenomenon. Bitcoin has begun gaining traction recently, and in the future, it could play a major role in how consumers and businesses pay for goods and services. But first, it has to solve its security issues. It has been associated with numerous scams, thefts and reported loss of bitcoin wallets, which store the private keys that you need to access a bitcoin address and spend your funds. One proposed solution is Case, a bitcoin wallet that emphasizes security and ease of use, according to the company’s CEO, Melanie Shapiro. http://wxxinews.org/post/case-wallet-promises-easy-secure-bitcoin-transfers

Bitcoin Price Watch; Here’s Today’s Strategy…So yesterday we noted that the bitcoin price was weaving its way through an upwards sloping channel, and further, that we would use this channel to help us figure out our strategy as we headed into last night’s Asian session. In traditional technical analysis when looking at equities, forex etc., a channel can mean two things. The first, that the price of the asset in question is consolidating after a particular move (in this instance, to the upside) as speculators take profits off the table. In this case, we generally see a resumption of the overarching trend (again, in this instance, to the upside) once the long market participants have exited their positions. Second, that the momentum of the prior move has dried up, and the opposing buyers or sellers (in this case, the sellers) are piling into positions. In this situation, we will often see a reversal. http://www.newsbtc.com/2016/01/22/bitcoin-price-watch-heres-todays-strategy-3/

Who Gets Your Bitcoin Investment Once You Are Dead? There are millions of Bitcoin wallets all around the world. This is a fact. Some use Bitcoin daily for transactions or the Blockchain to sign contracts; but someone else could decide to invest their money in Bitcoin long-term… And what if this person dies? Who will get those Bitcoin investments? Is there any regulation about Bitcoin heritage? “Of course it depends on the jurisdiction of deceased person”, said Cointelegraph Blockchain Legal Lawyer Dmitry Machikhin. “As I know the only State where such regulation was made is Delaware in U.S. Concerning this law, families are able to access the digital assets of deceased person, including BTC funds. Delaware is a domicile for several IT companies such as Twitter, but the law above is only for private persons - residents of Delaware”. http://cointelegraph.com/news/116118/bitcoin-investment-heritage

Bitcoin: Too Big to FailThe death of bitcoin has been proclaimed once again. Prominent developer Mike Hearn’s recent comments that the bitcoin experiment was over mark the 89th time the digital currency has been pronounced dead since it first launched in 2009, at least according to one website dedicated to tracking bitcoin obituaries. While it's sad to see a talented programmer like Hearn turn his back on bitcoin, there are still thousands of people working on making the world’s first digital currency a success. The bitcoin network has been running without interruption for seven years now; a feat no banking system can claim. Bitcoin and its underlying blockchain technology—an online ledger that records every bitcoin transaction—represent a fundamental innovation that can dramatically speed up transaction times. The first step is replacing our need for financial middlemen. Next, we can restructure notaries, land registries, stock markets and much more. http://europe.newsweek.com/bitcoin-too-big-fail-418481?rm=eu

Bitcoin’s Volatile Start To The Year? There are many points of debate about bitcoin. It’s dead. It’s not dead. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. It’s ridiculous to even think that it has a shot to be anything more than a fad that goes nowhere. But there’s one thing that everyone can agree on: it’s impossible to predict. When the calendar turned 2014 to 2015, bitcoin struggled to reach $300 – after flying high at 3x that earlier in the year. In 2016, bitcoin hasn’t dipped below $400. Yesterday, Jan. 21, bitcoin’s price around midday was $410.77. But, increasingly, if you ask the bitcoin community, some of its most strident advocates are beginning to question its viability, including one of its most prominent developers. http://www.pymnts.com/news/bitcoin-tracker/2016/bitcoins-volatile-start-to-the-year/

Will Bitcoin Conference In Russia Succeed In Changing Country’s Stance On Digital Currencies? Russia can be easily considered as one of the countries that is not bitcoin friendly, particularly after recent reports regarding Russian lawmakers submitting a new draft bill to the country’s legislative assembly Duma last month that seeks to ban digital currencies such as bitcoin. However, in rather surprising news, a Bitcoin Conference is going to be held in the country on April 8th 2016 at Digital October, Moscow, Bersenevskaya naberezhnaya, 6, str. 3, NewsBTC reported. Smile-Expo, a Moscow-based exhibition company, will be hosting the conference that hopes to attract participation from government representatives, financial experts, banking representatives, entrepreneurs, developers, investors, lawyers and others. It aims to discuss the future of Bitcoin and blockchain technology in Russia through constructive dialogues and debates. http://www.econotimes.com/Will-Bitcoin-Conference-In-Russia-Succeed-In-Changing-Countrys-Stance-On-Digital-Currencies-147253

Russia's Foreign Ministry is dismissing the UK's inquiry into the death of Alexander Litvinenko as politically motivated. "We regret that a purely criminal case has been politicized and has darkened the general atmosphere of our bilateral relations," spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. British officials will summon the Russian ambassador to the Foreign Office to discuss an inquiry that found Russia was likely to have been complicit in the killing of Litvinenko on British soil in 2006, UK Home Secretary Theresa May said Thursday. May told Parliament that Interpol notices and European arrest warrants were in place so that the main suspects would be arrested if they travel abroad. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/21/europe/litvinenko-inquest-report/index.html
