Has anyone ever had to submit for additional KYC verification on Bitstamp? Asked for a wire withdrawal about a month ago, and another last week and just got this from support: Dear XXX,
We received your withdrawal request. As your withdrawal request met some of our volume and frequency thresholds, we will have to kindly ask you to help us better understand the nature of your relationship with Bitstamp. In order to do so, we require that an additional KYC (know your customer) procedure is completed before we can proceed with the processing of your transfer.
We kindly ask you to send us a high resolution image double page of your international passport and answering the following KYC questionnaire:
1. How did you learn about Bitcoin?
2. The purpose of trading on Bitstamp?
3. What is the origin of the deposited Bitcoins?
4. When and how did you obtain your Bitcoins?
5. What is the reason for your activity - depositing BTC, selling, withdrawing?
6. What are your future plans and activities planned on our exchange?
7. Do you plan more of such withdrawals in the future? If yes, how many and why?
8. Which bank are you using? Please provide the complete address and SWIFT code.
9. How do you plan to use your withdrawn funds?

Not a problem for me, but just wanted to know if this was something new or not. Never received anything like that, and in fairness some of those questions' answers are really none of their business and also not part of KYC standard questions' anyway. You sure it's really coming from Stamp? If it is, then it would be interesting to know what "volume and frequency" triggers this extra request for information. |

There is evidence that 96000 coins have been stolen from it and the thieves are still trying to launder them through tumblers 1. To me 96000 coins are a bit too much for an online drug marketplace. If you want front seat you should invest some money in services around the ecosystem and in order to do that you must convert some of your coins to fiat.
No I must not. Converting back to fiat and waiting for the fiat to reach my bank is such a cumbersome and slow process that I don't want to do that unless I really have to. Instead I favour merchants that accept coins over the ones that only accept fiat. As of now they can handle the conversion themselves through their favourite payment processors. But I guess that some of those merchants already want to keep their balances in btc. |

I hoard coins because the price of real stuff measured in bitcoins is going down. And it makes sense to me to hoard something that acquires purchasing power over time.
You think that bitcoin is not a get-rich-quick scheme, but you are hoarding and speculating on a price increasement to acquire more stuff with it? Isnt' that the decription of a get-rich-quick scheme -> do nothing and want MOAAAAR? Dude dunno how you manage your savings but one day you'll be useless for work. If by then you haven't saved something for retirement then at best you will be a poor parasite living in a socialist country that will tax honest workers in order to provide you with basic income. If that's not OK with you then spend what you need and hoard the rest - see that stash will come handy one day. Unless you die young. But you cannot know. Unless you know when you are going to die. In which case don't hoard it and spend it all. But if you hoard then you want to own valuable assets, unless you are stupid. On whether bitcoin is going to be valuable it's up to you to decide. |

It is a big bet on your wealth indeed - but the point is not "cashing out", at least not in fiat. It is about getting rid of fiat in our daily lives.

As an exercise try to measure the fluctuation in price of things you want - in millibits or in microbits not in fiat. Might be a car. A house. A laptop. A journey. A loaf of bread.
Then decide which currency you want to hold today.

For now my preferences as a consumer are already influenced by acceptance of bitcoin by merchants, e.g. there is a takeaway order service which takes bitcoins for payment while another competing service (which has a larger selection of restaurants in my area) does not, and yet I prefer the former over the latter one. The revolution in my spending habits will come when I'll be able to pay for rent and grocery with coins. Whichever supermarket chain adopts them first becomes my favourite. By then I will convert my whole salary in coins and just only keep a few grand € for all things I still cannot buy with coins. |
