6941  Local / Marketplace (India) / Re: who is between Chennai and Bangalor? on: May 16, 2013, 04:10:52 PM
Thanks subvolatil,
I will be there for a wedding and then I plan on staying a while and exploring. I will update this thread when the date gets closer.
6942  Local / Marketplace (India) / who is between Chennai and Bangalor? on: May 16, 2013, 03:47:22 PM
I think I will be in India next winter. It would be fun to meet some bitcoin peers there. I am not sure what town I will be in, but it is between Chennai and Bangalor. Anyone there? Or any recommendations for things to see?
6943  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Amazon Coins on: May 16, 2013, 03:39:51 PM
I told them to keep their free coins I will wait until they start using bitcoins.  Wink
6944  Economy / Speculation / Re: why no crash ? on: May 16, 2013, 03:35:32 PM
U.S.law is just a local ordinance  for bitcoin. Why would the rest of the world care? In fact U.S. regulation may be a huge win for overseas exchanges. Our regulators may be so short sighted and ignorant as to kill the golden goose for our own citizens, but they can't stop a savvy foreign power from embracing the future and running our shitty debt based economy into the ground.
I think that bitcoin is now too big to be stopped. There is nothing anyone can do to dissuade me from using it. How about you?
6945  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-15 NY Magazine: Can Bitcoin Be Saved? on: May 16, 2013, 03:21:49 PM
You know what can't be saved? Magazines.  Tongue
6946  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Bitcoin's survival and long term prospects depend on MtGox getting killed. on: May 16, 2013, 01:46:12 PM
I'm not a fan of monopolies, but I don't see Gox as a scam. I have never had a problem with them (so far) and it has never taken more than an hour to fund my account.
6947  Other / Off-topic / Re: September 11th Security Fee $10 on: May 16, 2013, 12:28:19 PM
What is the ticket for? Airfare? That's messed up. Like we haven't spent enough pretending we are safe already.
6948  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: US Government Begins BitCoin Crackdown. BitBar can help!!! on: May 15, 2013, 08:04:19 PM
How does this help? If bitcoin can be cracked down on, then whatever a bitbar is can be outright crushed.
6949  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: US Government Begins BitCoin Crackdown on: May 15, 2013, 07:55:55 PM
I have an idea. How about I just don't suck it? How about I just go on using bitcoin no matter what some gov does? They can throw their bitcoin laws in same waste bin that contains anti-filesharing laws, drug laws, gun laws and other laws that Americans have no intention of following.
6950  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: US Government Begins BitCoin Crackdown on: May 15, 2013, 07:34:35 PM
This is being blown out of proportion.

The only reason this happened is because Mtgox were foolish enough to lie and say they aren't a 'money transmitter' and try to operate without a license.

If they had the appropriate license this wouldn't have happened. A lesson to other exchanges in the future.
+1
Maybe this opens the door for a legitimate business.
6951  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt Gox Down .... this is bad !!! on: May 15, 2013, 07:18:20 PM
looks like it is everywhere.

www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com

and it's not that bad.
6952  Economy / Speculation / Re: A simplistic view of what is going on on: May 15, 2013, 07:15:12 PM
I still don't understand why Gox smashed the deal with coinlab, knowing that without an MSB they are in violation of the law. No matter how bad the terms were for gox this can't be better.
Or did they think that FinCen was not serious?
6953  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here is the Seizure Warrant on: May 15, 2013, 05:59:06 PM
Mt.Gox is going to have to prove no USD actually moved from USA to Japan when a customer put money in / took money out. If this is not the case or they can't prove it they are in trouble.
The other issue is bitcoin and if the govt is going to try to call it currency.

I'll bet the leadership is kicking themselves right now they didn't follow through selling North American Ops to coinlab... Could have avoided the US govt's nonsense and saved $50 million +

Beginning of the end for Gox?
That's what I was thinking. This could have been a non-issue if the deal had not fallen apart.  I don't get it. They saw the FinCen thing stating that they had to become a money transmitter or they will be in violation of the law. Did they think that was a joke?
6954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Warrant against Dwolla and Bitcoin: The Beginning of the End of Bitcoin on: May 15, 2013, 05:49:56 PM
I thought the title of this implies the beginning of the end of this thread.

HA HA HA HA  Cheesy

Quote
"People can buy things with Amex points. That's a real kind of currency that's created by American Express to allow them to have a greater piece of consumption that they otherwise wouldn't get," said Bremmer.

HA HA HA HA...

Too funny. He actually tries to argue that new types of frequent flier miles will replace bitcoin.  Cheesy He is the funniest economist pundit ever.
6957  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: [ANN] Going to Bitcoin Conference 2013 San Jose, CA (Rollcall & Hotel Choice) on: May 15, 2013, 01:51:26 PM
...

And my footnote to that:

Let's hope Marriott and the rest of the major hotels are done changing all the guest room locks:

I would add that using the hotel wifi at a bitcoin conference may also be risky.
And as for the door lock exploit, this is never going to get fixed at most hotels.  I assume that this is the exploit from last year? It would require the hotel to not only replace all the locks but also the panel at the front desk. This is way more than most hotels can afford.
6958  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dwolla can no longer process deposits or withdrawals to MtGox on: May 14, 2013, 08:03:34 PM
Mutum Sigillum is the name of Mt Gox's Dwolla account.
Really? Then what is this?       http://www.mutumsigillum.com/
6959  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dwolla can no longer process deposits or withdrawals to MtGox on: May 14, 2013, 08:00:55 PM
The letter does not say what the title of this thread says.

It says that they will not process payments to a particular user "Mutum Sigillum LLC". Do you know who that is? Can you verify that they are not sending money to the Talibahn?

So much overreaction.
6960  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Schumer: It’s time to go after the 3-D printable guns on: May 14, 2013, 07:42:45 PM
Damn cat! Get back in your bag!  Angry

Good luck controlling an idea. This is here to stay forever. Now lets talk non-printable parts. Someone mentioned gunpowder?
Find a cave that has or has had bat colonies. You will see large guano piles in such a cave, and all around the edges of the guano pile you will see that Potassium nitrate has precipitated. It is also called saltpeter and it is a white powder/crystal. Collect it.

Next you will need to make some charcoal. Build a reduction fire in a pit you have dug and fill it with hardwood chunks. Light it and cover with grass to smother it a bit. When you are done you will have charcoal.

Next you need some sulfur.   Sulfur is the 16th. most common element. You can find it in nature if you live near a volcano, or buy it at the pharmacy.

Weigh out 75% potassium nitrate, 15%Charcoal, and 10% sulfur.

Mill the charcoal and sulfur for several hours until a fine powder is achieved.  Now add the potassium nitrate and mill for another two days.

You now have meal powder / black powder. It is crappy gunpowder, but it will work.
