801  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Flexcoin Payments went out today! on: September 05, 2011, 10:20:19 PM
I (and everyone I suppose) received 0.02% from the discounts. This is cool, but it would take a really long time (couple of years maybe) to cover the 0.5% withdrawal fee. So yes, it is a nice service, but people will not earn money by using Flexcoin. They will just pay less fees to withdraw.
802  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Possibly stupid question about anonymity on: September 05, 2011, 02:12:06 AM
Yes, in your example they would trace the coins and find out who you are. All transactions can be tracked because everything is publicly logged. Check blockexplorer.

To make "anonymous" transactions you must launder bitcoins. There are services that already do that, but I don't know if they are very used or not. For this to work, you must have a lot of people involved.
If a service like this works, the idea is simple. I'm going to quote David Schwartz from a similar question at Bitcoin Stack Exchange (this will go public on tuesday):

Quote
Say I received 10 bitcoins on a Bitcoin address I publicly advertise for donations. Anyone looking at the block chain can put that address in a search engine and fine me. Now say I want to use those 10 bitcoins to buy drugs. If the drug dealer's Bitcoins are traced, they'll point right back to me.

Now I can create a lot of accounts if I want. And I can pass the 10 Bitcoins I received through those accounts and then to the drug dealer. But likely because those accounts aren't used anywhere else, the trail would still lead right from the drug dealer to me.

Now suppose I put my 10 Bitcoins in an account created just for me by a Bitcoin laundering service. And you and Fred do the same thing. Then the service sends my coins to Fred and your coins to me. Then I spend the coins I got on drugs. Now the trail looks exactly the same as in the non-laundering example, except the trail leads straight to you instead of me -- a pretty good deal for me, not so much for you.

What happens in reality is that those 10 Bitcoins are split among lots of people lots of times, which creates a big mess. It wouldn't be possible for someone from the outside to find out where the money really came from.

Yes. If you are going to play around with it, make extra copies Wink
805  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in France: first legal decision directly related to Bitcoin? on: September 04, 2011, 05:52:57 PM
Not mentioning that exchange or online storage of bitcoins would require to be a bank, which involves a lot of fees and time (can take up to 5 years to create one).

Not true. Where I live (Bucharest/Romania) there are dedicated exchange houses which are not banks. You go in, give cash, get cash in another currency. I've seen these in other countries.

These are regulated in the EU, and you need a licence to operate one. Moreover, Romania is a recent addition to the EU, so it is possible that the relevant legislation is just being implemented (accession countries had a grace period to implement legislation).

It's possible, I don't know the legal status of these. But I am pretty sure that they don't need to follow the same rules, don't need to pay the same fees and most definitely will not take years to create one.

The point of my comment was that I don't believe the issue to be as bad as MagicalTux implied. There are solutions to open an exchange other than become a bank. There are also other countries other than France in the SEPA zone. Even Romania, why not? Smiley

There are lots of places like this all over Europe. I have never been outside Europe so I can't speak for other continents, but if you make a eurotrip, these houses sometimes come in handy.
806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins biggest flaw on: September 04, 2011, 07:27:07 AM
What if ALL fiat currencies collapsed tomorrow? lol

If all fiat currencies collapsed tomorrow you would be worried about bitcoin?  Roll Eyes Reminds me of other guy who asked on reddit what would happen to bitcoins if the Internet ends...
807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buy bitcoins using Google Checkout - btcnow.net on: September 03, 2011, 01:04:24 PM
This is interesting, I want to keep an eye on this guy.

Actually, now it says "not connected to the back end". I wonder if something happened...
808  Other / Archival / Re: Would you subscribe to a kink.com site if you could pay with Bitcoin? on: September 03, 2011, 12:00:53 AM
One thing that a user noted somewhere (it was a similar thread a few weeks ago) is that these companies make recurring payments so are interested in credit card numbers because they can charge monthly payments unless the user voluntarily unsubscribes. I don't know if this is the case, but anyway you don't lose anything for trying.
809  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Private Beta] Want Bitcoin to have a real user/merchant support site? on: September 02, 2011, 10:28:45 PM
Opinion?  Debate?  Extended discussion?  Oh the horror!

Yes, it is not a forum and it can not replace some of the forum's features. It's just question and answer. Questions that do not have a "right" answer (either because they are too vague, ambiguous or controversial) are closed. It keeps things clean, but limits functionality.

But it's very early beta so what is a good question and a bad question is still unclear. Anyway, you can take a look around meta if you want to ask specific questions about the site itself.

And you can cast reopen votes Wink

Personally, I am not interested, but is a user selling reality kings accounts and he has been pretty successful.

I was just wondering: when you promote bitcoins to a website do you mention bit-pay, for example? If not, how do you sell the idea? The market fluctuation is not really attractive for a seller...
811  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why? on: September 02, 2011, 05:01:59 PM
There aren's many taboo issues in this forum...

Well, there are two points:

  • You make money with your computer. This seems like free money, but with the current mining difficulty it is not that simple..
  • Bitcoin value raised 4000% since last year
812  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bit-pay Merchant Solutions for Charities & Non-Profits on: September 02, 2011, 04:42:01 PM
They are written and will be published with the next update.  Man, you guys can't let us catch our breath!  LOL

It's tough to provide a service because people always want more and more (and sometimes they want something and when they get it they realize they really didn't need it after all). Anyway, it was just a suggestion. Take your time ... Cool
813  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bit-pay Merchant Solutions for Charities & Non-Profits on: September 02, 2011, 04:10:17 PM
Congratulations on the improvements. Maybe you should get a section at your website for announcements? I see the Press/Media section there, but it doesn't have any info on opencart/charities.
814  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gox is Goxxin! on: September 02, 2011, 01:56:59 PM
HTML is very easy to parse and interpret.

That is actually not true Wink But you have a point. It is possible for bots to act even without APIs. I believe that the only way to prevent bot abuse would be to introduce some fees/time interval for cancelling orders or something like that. If that is a good idea or not, I don't know. Aren't forex/stock markets full of bots too?

816  Other / Meta / Re: Time to abandon bitcointalk.org ? on: September 01, 2011, 03:12:40 PM
I usually only click on threads regarding bitcoin announcements. I come here mostly to keep up with the new services that are coming up. Reddit is also cool for bitcoin news.

The bitcoin stack exchange site is great for Q&A, but it's closed for the general public at the moment. Opens next tuesday.
817  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 14 good reasons for bidding "bitcoins.com" on: September 01, 2011, 03:40:52 AM
So we will have a bitcoin.com owned by TradeHill and a bitcoins.com owned by MtGox?! That is so ridiculous...
818  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [100% complete!] Want Bitcoin to have a real user/merchant support site? on: August 30, 2011, 09:51:26 PM
it is quite impressive how slow this goes. has it been two month now or longer? at shapado it took 15 minutes....  Roll Eyes   just sayin...   Tongue

Just launched the private beta. There's a lot of action going on right now. Let's see how this goes. Cool

Public beta begins in a week and everyone can join then.
819  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How Long do you have to Wait to Not be a Newbie? on: August 30, 2011, 07:23:13 PM
You shouldn't feel bad for being stuck here. This is one of the few sections of the forum where people actually talk about bitcoins. Out there is just madness...  Tongue
820  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any solar powered rigs out there? I have an idea for one, check it out! on: August 30, 2011, 06:15:42 PM
