861  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Seriously, though, how would a libertarian society address global warming? on: September 07, 2011, 11:29:29 PM
I actually think libertarians should be opposed at every front where we find them.

Personally I see right wing economic libertarianism as fascism rebranded - sure they get rid of stupid racist ideas, but still maintain positive views about social darwinism and often, suspicion of democracy.

Some of the more extreme libertarian-conservatives such as James Delingpole are beyond the pale. To these sorts of libertarians, the scientists, in particular, those connected to advancing understanding of global warming are the new jews to be demonised.

I blogged about him. http://a-new-red-dawn.blogspot.com/2011/07/political-extremist-james-dellingpole.html

Oh, there's still plenty of racism; it's just tucked away so you don't see it. There's no more overt vilification but there's plenty of talk about dirty illegals stealing taxes and support for policies that only harm minorities.

That illegals part is the worst. I don't even consider people who don't support free immigration to be real libertarians. Oh ok, you're "libertarian" so long as we do everything in the order you think is best... But for now you are just another nationalist conservative. "Libertarians" who would send armed men to break apart peaceful families. Makes me sick.
862  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Liberals HATE Bitcoin [NY Times Link] on: September 07, 2011, 05:17:32 PM
It's just flat-out wrong though. BTC "soared"...then collapsed and hasn't risen again. It's also undergoing massive inflation, not deflation.

As a currency, its value it deflating because more and more of the currency is being hoarded by a select few who are still delusional enough to believe that bitcoins would be a viable, useful currency.  Right now it's just merely a highly efficient method of grifting wealth from one person to another.

It's already viable and useful for online gambling, since exchange rate fluctuations don't matter as much there. I doubt John Q Public will want it for buying groceries until the rate of production slows significantly and the exchange rate settles down. It's going to take years of early adopter cash-outs, bubbles, and crashes.

I'm a Liberal, I don't hate Bitcoin.

Me too. I wish people would stop lumping us in with Krugman. A tip to those who are not currently aware: OTHER GROUPS USUALLY SEEM LESS DIVERSE THAN YOUR GROUP, even though they are just as diverse.

864  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Seriously, though, how would a libertarian society address global warming? on: September 07, 2011, 12:53:27 AM
These are all coercive by definition.  Your philosophy is a philosophy of might makes right and mob rule.

So what? Call it what you want. What needs to be done needs to be done.

In theory a free market should be able to acknowledge anthropogenic global warming and self-regulate. It's only high transaction costs preventing that from happening already. Imagine a whole bunch of Anarchist groups mutually agreeing to the Kyoto protocol, or something similar.

Well, gee, imagine them not agreeing. For example, those libertarian think tank members over at Heartland Institute. I use the term 'think tank' lightly here - that's what they call themselves.

I said in theory. Until I see an actual working free market solution I'm certainly not objecting to pollution taxes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockean_proviso

You could go about it multiple ways. The key thing is that no appropriation of the land can leave anyone worse off afterwards. I think auctioning it off, followed by a periodic tax on the location only (not on the house or irrigation) to be divided up between everyone "nearby", would be acceptable from a Lockean perspective. Who exactly gets the revenue and who assesses the land would probably be the hardest details.

Yeah something should be done, but who and how are very important details. Any solution that doesn't work with both states and anarchist communities is not a realistic one.

Maria-

Can you provide any block explorer links for your large transactions mentioned above? I couldn't find them myself. This should clear all doubts regarding your intentions, only then will people have open minds for your advice.

Edit: THIS IS A SCAM. READ ON FOR DETAILS. (tldr version: she wants you to trust her executable, but has been proven a liar and a market manipulator.)
868  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Will governments attack bitcoin? on: September 06, 2011, 04:22:22 PM
They'll attack it because they think it's bad. Government is run by people who think they're doing the right thing but are often mistaken. They honestly want to protect people from dangerous things like Bitcoin, and the control (so they tell themselves) is a means to that end.
869  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Film? How much interest and support would there be? on: September 05, 2011, 10:09:57 PM
You should have a scene where Satoshi escapes helicopters and police using parkour. And an early adopter who turns out to be CIA ALL ALONG. Kidnappers paid by an anonymous mastermind, to keep the victim hostage until 100000 BTC are paid! Extended Silk Road hallucination scene with over-the-top graphics!
870  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of top Bitcoin Laundries. Please contribute. on: September 05, 2011, 02:37:01 AM
If you support Bitcoin, I suggest you cooperate with law enforcement as much as possible.

<yousuck>
I agree completely. In fact, go one better and report all of your Bitcoin holdings and cash flows today.
</whatever>

So far I only buy and spend Bitcoins. I don't convert to USD for precisely this reason.

YOU might be looking forward to an indictment, but I would rather not needlessly martyr myself. You can help the movement far more from home than from a cell.
871  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of top Bitcoin Laundries. Please contribute. on: September 03, 2011, 03:40:37 PM
In case you guys haven't noticed it, high-ranking government officials like Charles Schumer already consider Bitcoin to be a tool for money laundering. These services simply automate what any user can do himself.

We can pretty please people to not do this all we want, but they're gonna - it's cash. If you support Bitcoin, I suggest you cooperate with law enforcement as much as possible. Perhaps better block chain statistics tools?
872  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of top Bitcoin Laundries. Please contribute. on: September 03, 2011, 01:51:48 AM
What are the point of these?

Money laundering.

They should all be on this list: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Financial_Services
873  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will happen when there are no more bitcoins available? on: September 03, 2011, 01:45:18 AM
The thing is, why would people continue to maintain the network once all the coins have been mined? Won't it probably be a picture perfect tragedy of the commons type situation?

By this point transaction fees SHOULD be large enough to pay for it.
874  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How come everyone that points of bitcoin weakness are called trolls on: August 28, 2011, 03:32:33 AM
I just move on to the next post when someone says "troll". Bitcoin is a crazy idea and thus attracts crazy people. It's pointless to speculate intentions.
875  Economy / Gambling / Re: [New Site] WeBetCoins.com - Bet on everything! Earn bitcoins! on: August 26, 2011, 04:08:16 PM
Awesome, amazing, keep it up! If you guys want any grunt work done (graphics, writing, etc) I'd be happy to help, free of charge. Just PM me if interested.

What are the terms of service? I couldn't find them while browsing on my phone, and I hope that some evil stuff like "will Explodicle be assaulted tomorrow?" won't be allowed.
876  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: How to get Loans - IBB on: August 26, 2011, 12:50:10 PM
It would be very hard to secure loans via the Internet. Especially the way you're doing it. No offense, I just hate seeing good Bitcoins go to scammers who don't give a damn about this community or Bitcoins in general. You are sort of facilitating bad behavior by literally giving away free money to strangers. Money that isn't even yours (you got most of it from GLBSE) therefore you see no true value in it, other than people saying it's worth "this". I like your idea for Interest free loans, but whats the point of your bank existing in the first place? How do YOU make money? All of it sounds super fishy, and I really don't like where this is going, even if you really are the one loosing money. I say please change your practices and make it look like you're at-least trying to turn this into a legitimate business, otherwise it looks like a poorly planned HYIP...

He explains how he makes money here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=38544.msg472938#msg472938

He also doesn't give money to COMPLETE strangers, you need 200 posts, yada yada. Being able to do business pseudonymously is one of the primary reasons to use Bitcoin in general.

It makes sense that he would pick a deflationary currency. Jesus saves!

879  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Libertarian Anticapitalism on: August 22, 2011, 04:09:58 PM
If I recall correctly, food was very unsafe in the early industrial revolution, prior to regulation. Why didn't food rating agencies spring up then? Not enough internet? A conspiracy to stop them? Not enough time for the market to adjust? Since the government does an imperfect job of protecting the food supply, do any such rating agencies exist already?

The theory makes perfect sense to me, so now I wonder why it has not already happened.
880  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Libertarian Anticapitalism on: August 20, 2011, 06:12:08 PM
Well, in my view its not enough that someone comes after 15 years and says: "hey! Im still interested" and then goes away again.

If I own a house, it's my house. If I want it to sit there unused then that's my choice. Maybe I just like the idea of having a house that I could always live in, in an emergency. The point is, I might want to use it someday and that's all that matters. Let's say that I already own a house that I live in and I buy another house for $50,000. I have it there for 15 years doing nothing with it. Then, you come along and move in to it claiming it's unowned. The next day, the house I was living in burns to the ground and I'm homeless. Do you think that's fair?

So why would anyone ever declare that they abandon a house? It's not like they're paying taxes on it. I worry that bandits would rob this house, but honest men would leave it untouched indefinitely. Or worse yet, a prankster bandit posts an "abandoned" sign!
