Max,

Few questions.... I have 3 5970 on 1 rig running bamt. It mines normally, however, the system is very slow. ( mouse drags.....etc)

are you going through he same thing? Is it normal?

I have them over clocked at 820 with mem 500. Aggression is 13

What is your settings?

That's perfectly normal.  Wink

The videocards are just being heavily used by the mining process, which is as it should be. I would suggest connecting and controlling the rig via SSH. If you must control with an attached monitor, turn the aggression down to ~7 on the video-outputting GPU; it'll speed up your desktop.

If we extrapolate the past 24 hours worth of transactions, we get:

  • every 24 hours, 2.5 million $ worth of bitcoins change hands
  • that's a bit over $100K an hour of transactions
  • that's about $1 billion per year worth of transactions

A billion here and a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money

BLASPHEMY!!11oneSHIFTONE!!!!!

Are you implying that Bitcoins aren't real money?

Exactly.

You think Trade Hill is just out to scam people?

Did their customers lose assets?

No.

Or, at least, theoretically not. It's still being processed.

He said a few friends, so other networks/locations.  But i discovered the issue, he forgot the -p flag before the port.  Its all good now.

VPS Squared might get a few video tutorials soon.

A site is coming soon, I'll have to make the site tonight and tomorrow or something, it'll be basic at first, really basic.

Freenode Channel is made though: #VPSSquared

Video tutorials? On what exactly?

Yea the NAT drops the ping packets, if anyone wants them enabled I can probably do so.

I'm having one client having issues connecting from multiple sources, not sure why, nothing should block it, and I can access it with my remote server.
-Any suggestions?

"Multiple sources"? Multiple computers on the same network, or computers with different locations/net connections?
887  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT - Easy persistent USB key based linux for dedicated miners/mining farms on: February 18, 2012, 11:22:29 PM
actually, this is only a partial test.  ubuntu live isn't going to load the ATI proprietary drivers afaik, so the GPUs won't be doing the same things at all as if they were init by the ATI driver.  they will be in some compatible vesa mode or maybe the oss ati driver, which is a whole different animal.   if it still crashes, just more confirmation that the hardware is wack, but if it runs really doesn't mean much.

the fact is that bamt runs fine on hundreds of machines, and its just superficial changes from debian which runs fine on millions of machines.  this is not a software problem.

True; I think it runs VESA. I was just trying to convince him that it wasn't a BAMT issue.  Grin
888  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT - Easy persistent USB key based linux for dedicated miners/mining farms on: February 18, 2012, 08:32:40 PM
i need to clear up a few things:
there was only 1 HDD it couldnt see, i had 1 other lying around to test, wich it díd see (windows) but couldnt install too (just said that as an error, no specifics whatsoever)
the mobo, ram and CPU also ran for years as my main PC, with HDD's and windows
the RIP artwork werent artifacts; it was in the command window, after giving the restart mining command. it were lines that made a gravestone with RIP in it; it was a gravestone by design, not an error
also, the USB stick isnt the problem, i used a brand new one at first, and switched to an older one later when i found that one lying around, wich gave the same errors
windows díd boot; i tried installing from USB (ripped the iso myself) and it worked untill you needed to select a HDD
the whole thing ran for 3 days without a problem, and then i stopped it myself in order to OC it, it didnt crash that time and it might have continued to work without a problem (can't know for sure though)

if its a hardware problem, then i'd say its the motherboard, but im pretty sure its good since ive used it for so long. it might have been damaged during transport though, so i'l try using another one

@max
nice tip, but it won't work i'm afraid
like i said; i tried pulling out the internet cable so it couldnt start mining (no work from pool) but it still goes black

Download a Ubuntu Live USB image, load it on the USB stick, see if that boots alright. If it does, we know some BAMT configuration is the issue. If not, you have a hardware problem.
889  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 6 ASUS 5850s (OEM, used, no warranty) [associated parts, too] on: February 18, 2012, 08:19:44 PM
We ended up agreeing on an exchange rate where total price came to ~$800 (4.2*190) when paid. 800/6=$133/ea. $114.55+44.06 (shipping outside the EU) = $158.61 (likely more around the price imsa paid assuming he'll bundle the cards in one shipment)

Outside the EU, I agree, not as good a deal. Just thought it was worth a shot for 5 BTC.  Grin

Out of curiosity, price on the motherboard/CPU combo?
890  Economy / Services / Re: bitcoinvps.net Contact? on: February 18, 2012, 08:08:23 PM
Hey,

I bought a VPS from bitcoinvps.net recently paid for it straight away and haven't heard from them!

Anyone any contact with them or any details?

Any help would be great.

R

You may be out of luck, that company seems to be defunct.

I still don't know what that does that, the VPS host gets the same speeds as that speed test, thinking its something with KVM, but i'll keep looking.  Ping times should still be amazing regardless =)

Well, you might want to check your settings, because, interestingly enough, ping doesn't work. (Packets are sent but not received)

I suspect somehow the NAT on your VPS software is not correctly routing the received packets to VPSs. Internet otherwise works fine. If you can fix that, I'd be glad to post a ping test.

Point me to where I can buy 6 of them within the next 3 days for less than that and I will buy them AND provide you a 5btc finder's fee.

I don't know where you live, but in Europe, http://bitmit.net/en/trade/i/903-sapphire-radeon-hd-5850-xtreme/description would be cheaper.
893  Economy / Services / Re: VPS Squared - Virtual, Powerful, Supported VPSs on: February 18, 2012, 07:36:52 PM
BinaryMage did a few tests on the VPSs, but those images seem to be down now, I have a big day today, but i'll link a Speedtest.net from the connection for now.

BinaryMage got a 600KB/s download from the VPS, and i've gotten the same result, but the speedtest.net is the connection from a dedicated computer.

Edit: for anyone wondering why they only have 2 stars, I think i am finding out...We called and got put on hold, then offered to have them call us back.. They called back 30 minutes later and we got put on hold for another 40 minutes... Oo They're just having issues with a lot of things, their website doesn't function very well and they're working on it but still would cause bad ratings.  I personally like them.

The images I linked to on the last page certainly aren't down for me...

Yeah, I tried multiple servers and multiples times during the day, 600 KB/s was essentially the maximum I managed to get.
894  Economy / Services / Re: VPS Squared - Virtual, Powerful, Supported VPSs on: February 18, 2012, 07:00:11 AM
I'm surprised this isn't selling better... it's far superior (cost wise at least) than any other bitcoin vps out there.

Bump.

Lack of dedicated IPs/ports probably hurts it; that's a feature many people need.
895  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 17, 2012, 11:53:20 PM
I've had to re-start a few of my miners multiple times today. What is happening with GPUMAX that is kicking the crap out of me today ?

The work que seems to empty out, communication lost, then BAM! sick card(s) in CGMiner.

I've had this happen a couple of times in the past (once every couple of days or so) but today is once an hour or more.

What's happening ?

Same issue. Work queues empty every minute or so, takes minutes to get reconnected. Works just fine on other pools. 5x 5870 @ 980/300 on BAMT. Any suggestions?

Wait for Kepler if I was in your position. I have a feeling they are going to rock this time for mining with the GTX780 having 2304 shaders !

Imagine what the GTX790 will do with 2304 SP * 2 = 4608 shader processors ! I think if their arch did not suck at integer performance then it will surely beat that 7990.

And you are 100% right, AMD drivers always will and always have sucked really hard. I hate AMD with a passion for that fact alone. Nvidia is not that much better and they still have shitty drivers ( but much better than AMD ), pity the GTX580 sucks compared to a 5870 but I think Kepler will change that Wink

Both require end-user expertise to work properly. I'm not sure that qualifies them as "sucking", more like "not user-friendly". Nonetheless, I still miss the days of 3DFX.
897  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: February 17, 2012, 06:40:58 AM
No the 580s are for gaming, folding, video work and daily use.

Nonetheless, I doubt mining is even profitable, for the electricity cost of leaving them on.

WHAT WORKS
Motherboard Brand: Gigabyte
Motherboard Model & PCIe Slots: GA-EP45-UD3P; 2 x16, 3 x1
Power Supply Brand & Model: OCZ ZX1250W
Number & Model GPUs: HD 5870 Reference (AMD) x5
Extender Cables w/Molex Power?: 2 x16 to x16 extenders w/o power, 3 x1 to x16 extenders with molex power

Tested and working on both Ubuntu and Debian (BAMT). Note that X output is piped to the card on the first x16 slot and basic standard output (terminal w/o X) is piped to the first card. (on an x1 slot)
899  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is this a good psu for my setup? on: February 16, 2012, 04:58:52 AM
I assume you're using PCIe extenders on the motherboard, as the one you listed only has 2 x16 slots.

A 750W PSU will not be sufficient for 2 5850s, 2 5830s, and a Phenom II X6. You want at least 1kW; brand doesn't matter too much as long as it's not bargain bin. Make sure it comes with sufficient PCIe power connectors.

Agreed! This picture really makes me wish I still had my acrylic panel cases... Deadly red glow to keep the family awake at night.
It's a clean machine, and it looks pretty rad. Cheesy

Heh. Cases are for the rich. All of my computers except one server and my laptop are parts screwed/taped/glued/otherwise attached to wood/scrap metal frames. I wish I had some nice cases.   Sad
