The moment we free ourselves from the tyranny of the goverment and become free...

I'm selling you my laptop and all my bitcoins for a bow , 10 arrows and a blanket.

A common reaction. People often imagine that without centrally enforced rules, everything would instantly dissolve into a dog-eat-dog war zone with people killing other people at random, looting, raping and taking a shit in front of your door (someone once provided this as an argument in this very same discussion with me..). As if the only thing stopping people from acting this way right now is the looming threat of imprisonment and punishment by the legal system. Divide and conquer still seems to be working quite well.

Have you ever noticed that laws are there for OTHER people? As in the laws are here to prevent other people from killing me and stealing my stuff. Not to prevent me from doing the same. I'm a decent fellow. It's those other bastards...  Grin

WITHDRAWAL: THE GATHERING

Bring your own pitchforks

Switched from SEPA to "International Wire" - exactly same shit since 8 business days now. (transferring EUR)

Uhm. I've got a feeling.

Liberty Reserve news came 5 days ago.
OkPay news also came 5 days ago.

Can anyone please confirm he/she successfully withdrew money through international transfer after that date?

I mean no FUD sorry I genuinely want to know.
885  Economy / Service Discussion / [SCAM] crypto-giveaways.blogspot.co.uk on: May 28, 2013, 08:47:06 AM
Hi,

just warning the potential users that this is clearly a scam.

By following the instructions on the page you are giving an unknown entity who just runs an anonymous blog the permission to borrow up to 100 of your BTC. Nothing in Ripple can stop them from running away with your coins.

If you trust someone you don't know with your money, you deserve to be robbed.

Edit: the Ripple website went under DDOS a few minutes after the scam was exposed on Ripple forums. Coincidence?

Oh it seems you are their new scapegoat coinseeker. I'm glad I got rid of that role actually,

No scapegoating here. It's just that most of us in here agree that 99% of Coinseeker's posts are not worth our time, just because they are very low quality.

Sometimes I have to listen to the ones I disagree with. It is my judgment to decide whether I can learn something or not from them. If not (eg Jaroslaw) then there's the ignore button. And in fairness last week Coinseeker promoted himself out of my ignore list.

someone is putting some serious thought into making a "bitcoin town"

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=216139.0

unbelievable...

If there is a Bitcoin town, I vote adamstgBit as Mayor. Who's with me?

Speaking of walls. It just occurred to me that the Night Watch needs a new captain.

Any volunteer? Frozenlock? Grin

It worries me to a certain degree that there doesn't appear to be a steady growth of services and stores accepting bitcoins.

So what?

Let's be honest , most people in this thread have no desire of spending their hard earned coins anytime soon. BTC is more like an electronic improved version of gold. And it's not like I can go to a shop with half an ounce of gold in my hand and buy me a smartphone... at least not for the moment. And I don't care... gold is a commonly accepted store of value nevertheless. Enough for me to hold it and change it back into fiat at need.

If anyone quotes this please save me the lecture about BTC having no intrinsic value as opposed to gold. Perception is value.

I think the Liberty Reserve news is a big deal.
LRUSD was the virtual currency of choice for a lot of shady or barely legal businesses.
I estimate a few TENs of millions LRUSD are now suddlenly useless.

892  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BTC limit for "large withdrawals" on Bitstamp on: May 23, 2013, 01:12:17 PM
FYI, Bitstamp is most likely in violation of US laws because it is a Ripple gateway and issues bearer instruments of USD and other fiat currencies without appropriate licensing.

dude, we know you hate Ripple.
But would you ever stop your FUD-against-anything-ripple-friendly campaign?

Seriously.

893  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is Tradehill's Jered Kenna like a Lannister? on: May 23, 2013, 12:38:00 PM
On April 10, 2013 I emailed info@Tradehill.com (directed to Jered) and have received no reply.
On April 17, 2013 I emailed support@Tradehill.com and have received no reply.
On April 23, 2013 I emailed Claim@Tradehill.com and have received no reply.
On May 5, 2013 I emailed support@Tradehill.com and received a reply from Derek Johnson that I should direct my inquiries to Claim@Tradehill.com. (He was also kind enough to tell me that if I wanted to open a Tradehill Prime account I should click "Request an account" on Tradehill.com. I didn't ask him whether I could open it using the BTC that Tradehill already has in my old account ...)
On May 7, 2013 I emailed Claim@Tradehill.com and have received no reply.
Today (May 22, 2013) I emailed Claim@Tradehill and (so far) have received no reply.

<sarcasm>
Someone in this forum said that you have to talk to this misterious "person doing payouts for the old company". At least that's what Jered says if you ask the refunds question in a room full of journalists (or in a public comment to a news headline which is the same).
</sarcasm>

Sincerely hope it works out for you.

In reply to someone else in the thread: Jered McKenna never ran Gox to my knowledge. You are confusing him with Jed McKaleb.
894  Economy / Speculation / Re: Has mtgox already became irrelevant? on: May 22, 2013, 01:51:41 PM
I am looking at bitcoinity and I see

gox: 122.40
bitstamp: 117.86
btce: 116.21
campbx: 118.38

It appears that gox is an outlier and shows "wrong" exchange rate.

Does this mean the beginning of the end of gox dominance?

Does this mean healthier Bitcoin infrastructure?

I just look at this from a personal point of view.  I can obviously buy BTC at one of the other exchanges, move the BTC to Mt.Gox, and sell them on Mt.Gox for the higher price.  Easy.

Why am I not doing it?  Because I do not want Mt.Gox USD.  Others must feel the same way or the prices would become equal over time.

+1
And European users do not want MtGox EUR either with their 36 days average withdrawal delay and (1%+0.24EUR) fee.
895  Economy / Speculation / Re: You guys gonna become paranoid about Ripple on: May 22, 2013, 09:36:59 AM
Aint nobody got time for Ripple

Apparently plenty.

The thing about paranoia is under it's influence you can't think straight, just compare the type of answers from the beginning of the thread to how they are now, I notice a big discrepancy.
If I am right there will be an XRP bubble / BTC crunch next, it was the same thing with LTC... ironically fuelled by the paranoia.

I expect a XRP bubble although not so dramatic. The OpenCoin crowd has the power to slow down growth by means of huge walls. Although the risk is that their own greed prevents them from doing so and they end up killing their own toy (but hopefully not the fresh ideas that it brought on the table).

I do not expect XRP to have the power to crunch BTC though. Because BTC is the MP3 of cryptocurrencies.

After the silent exodus from Gox, I see that the other exchanges' volume and prices are on a steady rise and I think this is a damn good sign for BTC. If BTC price stays stable for a while I think that all we need is infrastructure - like exchanges that are able to issue commonly accepted debit cards denominated in BTC with instant conversion at non-extortion fees. Then we're back on our route to dismissing fiat.

896  Economy / Speculation / Re: The "Vladimir Club" on: May 22, 2013, 07:11:23 AM
How many do you think are eligible for the club today? I would think it is far less than 5000 individuals, maybe closer to 500.. Undecided

I think it is just about 300 members. And no, I am not in The Club.

yeah right Grin

I heard TradeHill organized a "VIP&wannabe-snubs" party at the conference.
I wonder whether anyone from this forum had the time to go and crash it?  Cheesy
897  Economy / Speculation / Re: Canadian Regulators: BTC exchanges are not a money service business, carry on! on: May 21, 2013, 09:19:39 AM
If this news is true, it is fantastic.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/05/20/canada_welcomes_bitcoin_traders_fintrac_letter/

If this is corroborated, I expect pretty decisive upward movement.

Fantastic news, thanks for sharing!
Can Cavirtex now go to Scotiabank, letter in hand, and get their account reopen?
898  Economy / Speculation / Re: You guys gonna become paranoid about Ripple on: May 21, 2013, 07:46:53 AM
Shameless self bump, I'm seeing it pop up in every discussion, meanwhile the FUD machine is in high gear, steering into a brick wall (end of beta)

How many Bitcoins have the ripplescam.org guys already payed?

Humbly I say I don't understand where you're coming from so I think I am missing the context.
ATM what confession do you belong to? Ripple haters or Ripple converts?

Speaking of walls: there is a huge one at 10 million XRP for 50 XRP/USD in the XRPUSD orderbook. BitStamp stopped selling away XRPs at that price around the time that wall was touched last Friday.
I believe the Ripple Masters (Jed & co) want the XRP price to stay there for a while. Either that or they have decided to collect 200k USD for OpenCoin's pocket expenses.

Also I noticed in Ripple that the XRPUSD volume and depth are growing faster than the XRPBTC ones.
Dunno if that's an application of the bigger fool theory. But yes the herd thinks of XRPs like another altcoin. IMHO because it is. And part of the mass doesn't care it's premined. Metaphorically speaking I bet it's those people that e.g. would choose dictatorship over democracy in exchange for a false sense of security. If it works for them and if Jed proves to be a benevolent dictator then happy days.

Methinks: since the spreads in XRPBTC are way larger than in XRPUSD, that is an opportunity for someone to write arbitrator bots and increase their BTC count or XRP count for free depending on which confession they choose to belong to.

899  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: May 19, 2013, 05:51:44 PM
LTC is the only alt worth buying. Every single other one is a joke for any purposes beyond 0-day or total pump and dump manipulation.

plus over 9000!

Well, I know this sounds blasphemous but speculatively speaking, XRPs are doing wonders for me. Apart from the fact that I love the protocol, I can't give a rat's ass that XRPs are premined and are going to make OpenCoin filthy rich. I'd love to see more exchanges on Ripple so I could trade directly the BTC/USD pair on their shared orderbook. But meanwhile my XRPs I bought for playing with Ripple are worth double the BTCs I initially paid for them.
900  Economy / Service Discussion / all these new places to buy bitcoins. Where is the liquidity? on: May 19, 2013, 06:00:05 AM
Hi, just wondering if someone can help me understand this.
After all announcements around Bitcoin 2013 conference this weekend, I seem to see new exchanges popping up like mushrooms. Take e.g. WebMoney or the new BitInstant. Where do they harvest the coins needed to provide some market depth without slippage? I mean if I can crash BitStamp/BTC-E prices with just a thousand coins, how can these new players guarantee the prices to stay stable on their exchanges that have much lower volume? Do they have some secret agreements for a partially shared orderbook with BitStamp, maybe Gox and BTC-E, maybe Ripple-alike but simpler? Or are they doing fractional reserve banking selling you bitcoins they don't have or buying them in advance with cash they don't have yet?
