So is expected an increase in difficulty...that's not good at all: I hear a lot of miners that will stop mining or mantain it at low level due to price drop even now, an increase in difficulty can stop even more people to mine (low MHash/sec miner in first place are not incetivate to continue mining: a 200MHash/s machine can produce less than 2BTC/month today, another increase can reduce of another 1-2% the reward). Or the BTC/$ grow at least of 10-15% in a couple of week I can easily predict a big drop in next difficulty rearrangement.
If your theory were true there would already be a big drop. The reason there isn't is that it's still profitable for some people to mine. When they see that others are dropping of they can expand their own mining operation because they don't need to fear a large difficulty increase. Miner in a lot of country can still mine for profit even at 5$ so they sustain the total hashrate and some hardcore miner will probably mine even if is in red (and a couple of week of no earnings or small loss is sustainable for almost every one), but if in long term BTC still mantain a low price that's not feasible. Anyway BTC is again over 7$ (over the +10% I've put as premise to invalid my theory) and next difficulty will drop of 2%

Dang... It hit almost $6 today.... will this drop ever end? ~$2 in 2 days .... what the heck is going on? Is everyone pulling out? This feels like a big sham!
No 3 days of holiday in USA = no new money in exchange. Banks again open and we are now at 6.8

For those ready to call me a troll, fuck off.
Reasons why bitcoin will continue its fall:
1) Nothing new or exciting is happening (since silkroad really).
Agree 2) Nothing new or exciting is even visible on the horizon.
Agree 3) News media pays no attention (why would they?).
Agree 3) Information and knowledge about bitcoin is as a result isolated (to a few forums).
Well not actually: a lot of people out of forums knows of bitcoins. But due to point 1 & 2 noone move in 4) Bitcoin owners realise this and are selling at a loss (reducing the currency value). [/i]
Not true, a lot of people here can earn even at 1-2$: there will be millions of BTC mined or bought at sub 1$. And the market deep of last weeks is really low (even for BTC). Ask yourself one question - why up rather than down?
Good luck and happy trading!
Is correct that now it can only go down (and with a 3 days of bank closed is even worse) and so will do for some week probably (not at this rate I hope). But I think that in future (not a week or a month maybe 3-4 months) it shall go up again. Remember that bitcoin is only 2 years old, normally investments and commodities are considered over a range of years, but overall we are over the level BTC have 4 months ago, and to compare a 6 month value the grow is of 400%. And we have more BTC around so value and prices are both incremented. Looking at the chart I don't see a so bad situation: http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#rg180zigDailyzlztgTzm1g10zm2g25zi1gCMFSpecially confronted with some other: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=^IXIC&t=6m&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=^GSPC%2C^DJI

the big risk is that I pay tax that never be used in my town, and that the control of the town is not anymore in the hand of its citiziens, and that's not democratic at all.
But most of these small towns get more money out of this system than they pay in. If a small town only had it's local taxes, and not a bit from everywhere else, they would have to drastically cut services. I've to disagree: small town can "federate" to cut the costs of services. For example trash can be collected in different days so that a single truck can serve up to 4-5 towns, some city offices can work for all the towns in a single place cutting again the costs and so on. And if a town is well administrate can do on itself (I know some that actually do with virtually no help from outside) because inefficiency and "shadow costs" are easiest do discover in a small organization.

From someone in the UK paying £1.40/litre for petrol and £0.18/kWh I can't express how jealous I am right now. I feel your pain apart from its £1.30/litre where I am you lucky guys Petrol is "only" 1.35£/litre but energy is over £0,22/Kwh here And mine is only really a matter of faith in a future jump of BTC value (mine with a 400MHash/sec hw can produce 5-6BTC/month at current difficulty but costs you easily 50-60£/month)

Nice parallel. Only hope that took a little less time to begin to grow again: 24 years from gold to BTC scale is 2-3 years and today is more 1982-1986 range than in the 94-98 in which you put it.

I don't buy the defense that bitcoin ≠ money, nor do I buy the defense that it's just a protocol. But I do think it's clearly a commodity.
Assuming that bitcoin is commodity (that's also what I think is) has a big drawback: commodities can be taxed by VAT (or almost is what occours in a lot of country for the commodities): having all the transaction encumbered with a 20-22% of tax will kill almost instantly all the appeal bitcoin can have for the merchant. And also limits a lot the internation exchange of BTC (again moving commodities between borders can be regulated - you can't cross Italian-Swiss border to make an example with 10Kgs of gold without paying taxes).

They could, however, start buying it up to get rid of bit coins. I imagine if the price keeps going down, they'll do that exact thing, in an attempt to side-lining the project and destroying the coins that they buy. Now, this could have the effect of raising bit coin prices so that fractions of a coin become just as valuable as well. Who knows, we'll see!
If they buy all the money they can hoard price will rise, but market will die slowly due to the fact that only BTC to goods transactions will be out of reach. But the market is not ready to sustain a similar attack because there is only 1 level or at least 2 in the market (supplier will be payed in fiat currency for most of the merchant out there so all needs to convert BTC to fiat in short times)
