981  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Who owns the rights to the Bitcoin Whitepaper? on: August 11, 2022, 10:20:38 AM
We were puzzled too. It looks like in UK, no matter how wrong you are, if the other party doesn't show up for the trial, you may win.

Is it not a guaranteed win I thought it was?

If you don't turn up or ask for representation from another party then why do you expect to win (I'd assume cobra might've been eligible for legal aid too to have a solicitor sit on the case - probably at no expense to cobra).

Satoshi holds the rights to the whitepaper, always has. It's possible in most places to withdraw articles from the public domain afaik but I doubt they'll give up on their anonymity over a whitepaper.
982  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I started business many days ago. Now it's time to accept Crypto as a payment. on: August 11, 2022, 10:13:12 AM
I'm undecided between whether having a single bitcoin address or using binance pay is a good idea - although it's probably a great place to start to see if there's much customer interest in paying that way (or you don't know if there is).

They're good choices for lower volumes of transactions that probably won't be disputed. I think if your company sees it worthwhile adapting to more appropriate methods for receiving lots of transactions then you'll be better off putting a website on thst card and using a server to process transactions (both for customer privacy and your own - and it might make it more convenient for you to do it that way too).

983  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin doesn't like inflation either on: August 10, 2022, 01:57:40 PM
The predicted inflation rates are inversely proportional with disposable income amounts so yes I'd expect bitcoin to boom when the economy starts to recover and improves/remains stable.

It might change though when people who drop some investments during a crisis like this see crypto might be an option that can weather the storm that's a bit different (e.g it's not like bonds and gold that have more of a limited, controlled or manipulated price in some ways).
984  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin cannot stop amazing me on: August 10, 2022, 01:47:51 PM
Why would people still have confidence in a currency that has faced countless media wars by powerful nations, corporations and individuals depicting it as a bad investment? There have been speculations and projections that Bitcoin price would keep falling until it would soon become worthless, yet people still trust it.

I think all of these are just an individual pushing a narrative on others that just accept it, think it'll be good for media coverage of their company or just have fear of the technology. I don't know if it's the same with a lot of people but particularly older generations get annoyed at younger people using phones until they realise how well connected it's made people and have had to embrace it themselves - crypto might end up in the same category as that.
985  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto Grid trading bots. Are they worth it? Please sure your experience. on: August 09, 2022, 04:24:34 PM
How much data/time do these ranking go off? Some strategies work for a certain amount of time and then fail.

Most strategies that you come.up with that are successful will only work until enough other people find them or they get a lot of volume/volatility behind them so the market changes.

I'd guess these get listed as doing well as they might've worked for some time in the past but they're still likely gambling and are likely impossible to predict.
986  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What would happen to bitcoin if all bitcoin-related stuff on GitHub got banned? on: August 09, 2022, 09:59:30 AM
The got you use/call from the command line is still fully open sourced afaik from when Linus made it.

The server was open sourced too afaik so that can be freely installed or run anyway by the developers (there may be ways it can be easily decentralised and run on core if the community wants to).
987  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The US government is targeting mixers. Are BTC mixers next? on: August 09, 2022, 09:25:52 AM
What are the chances of coinjoin and chipmixer getting in their scope? No service can judge a user and their intention for using their mixer.

There are speculations bitmixer(.io) was closed for similar reasons back when that happened (many years ago) - chipmixer sprung up from the ashes of its demise though (not saying the two are linked but it might be possible for chipmixer to sell their assets and reputation to another/a new mixer if they think they're about to be told to stop operating - especially if they were denonymised and can work out how).

If there's a gap in a market something will spring up in the place of the last one though so it will probably become futile for them to even bother closing them down.
988  Economy / Economics / Re: Recession: The Government's Obvious Mistake on: August 09, 2022, 08:57:09 AM
  • Lockdowns disrupt the supply chain. Artificially closing and reopening the economy will make a high unemployment period followed by high training costs and a longer time to get the same level of productivity;

This was probably handled the best by governments imo. I didn't see any/much news on there being pharmaceuticals having to isolate on ships or at ports (these normally have the most internationally intensive operations - chips/semiconductors did take a big hit though).

  • Lockdowns obliterating small/home businesses;

This is where the UK government went really slow (and probably a lot of other places too). Most people who weren't running a formally/publicly listed company had a longer wait to be included in furlough (this was fine for a lot of people but it probably incentivised some to break lockdown rules).
989  Economy / Economics / Re: Do cash control spending more than digital or crypto currency? on: August 08, 2022, 10:58:20 PM
There are so many potential motives behind upticks in cash withdrawal and deposit. Its difficult to pinpoint a prime mover or single cause.

Retail forex rates are very low in the UK from what I remember because of the closeness with other countries and how many euros/kronas/francs etc can be moved and how much the market can handle. I've seen rates being well advertised and it's likely because they're offering lower rates than what's available from banks (even without bank fees factored in - although I think they also tried to nullify theirs if you order in advance). My guess here is that banks and larger institutions try to run off trust - it works out well for them with the older generations.

Cash makes me more aware of what I'm spending (or it used to when it was paper). There's a cost to using cash and that cost of change. If you're trying to save money and budget better with it then sure use cash and you could probably save money even if you donate the excess (if you're bad at budgeting or really impulsive) but for a lot of people I don't think this is the case.
990  Other / Archival / Re: Entrepreneurship or Office job? on: August 08, 2022, 10:45:26 PM
What do you think is the way forward?

Hopefully a world where more people work from home, more people are forced out to pick up hobbies they enjoy and more people being able to meet others that are more similar to.them compared with what they might get at office jobs (a selection of people that might lack the same motivation in a lot of areas).

Realistically I hope people gain a lot from not having their own commute, expand out into different hobbies and use those to pay for things and supplement or replace their income longer term (if possible).

There's an abundance of financial advisors telling people to diversify into other assets and companies actively trying to stop people from diversify their roles or working for competition or even any other company/job - if this decreases as it should since populations get more intelligent year on year and also have resources like the Internet then we should see more and more people taking on multiple part time placements imo as apposed to taking on just one full time job that sucks all.tbeir energy and motivation (in the worst cases).
991  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I messed up on: August 08, 2022, 10:35:14 PM
Do you have anything else stored on your pc that might make it more likely you'll be able to recover the wallet (sich as a wallet file).

Get a disk image as mentioned above becore doing the following - if you're unsure how to do it you could look up DD (the program) if you're familiar with Linux and just leave it to run - it might take a long time.

Also (and perhaps a stupid question) have you checked EVERY recycle bin (they'll be at least one per mounted machine drive - they used to randomly move things to D on old windows).
992  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 07, 2022, 04:15:37 PM
If you deposit and withdraw the same amounts with no delay you diminish the value of mixing.

I am almost sure that the engine doing the mixing is not down (I expect its uptime not being related to onion, instead related to bitcoin network and some machine running 24/7 in the cloud).

It also might have checks to know when it's down so that sessions can be extended based off the downtime.

ChipMixer will also be able to trace deposits from the blockchain/their own wallets and offer withdrawals based off that after then (especially if session tokens have some relationship to deposit addresses).
993  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 07, 2022, 03:05:27 PM
I do not completely believe that is accurate.  I can load other pages... both clearnet and onion pages.  But not CM.  Sure... not every page loads every time.  But CM has not loaded for 48 hours... and I have tried at least 100 times.

Are you noticing a pattern between ones you can access a lot easier and ones you can't?

I don't know many tor sites to access but if exit nodes host their own dns servers then it's very likely they're favouring connections to sites they know (and don't have to ping other servers to find).

I'd imagine chipmixer hosts their own exit node that's able to dns to their website and a lot of requests might go straight through them.

The network looks like it's being aggressively restructured in order to handle the ongoing ddos and this might've caused other unintended disruptions.

(I don't want to mention the other reason they might be suffering because I don't want to educate others on how to perform ddos attacks but @chipmixer it might be necessary to look at making your nodes throttle outgoing connections or disconnecting ones that look unfavourable/spammy/are big).
994  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Concern over market fluctuations affecting a 5year bitcoin investment plan. on: August 06, 2022, 09:44:25 PM
What are some steps I need to take, to ensure I protect my investment from possible loss over this 5year duration? Is the intent to commit to a monthly investment overseeing this period, likely to backfire in any way? Should I be scared of a market crash incident?

No one can guarantee profits/a good return in any investment. Cryptocurrency are a speculative asset class and come with risks of losing your funds (the market has performed well so far but no one can know whether it'll definitely continue or not).

If you're investing with small change you don't care about then it's fine to invest and just hold onto it, if you're investing with more than you can afford to (and maybe something you could end up selling at a loss) you're much better diversifying into more stable investments like stocks or a bank account/bond with reasonable interest.
995  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Do I need a VPN to short trade in the UK ? UK FCA crypto confusion on: August 06, 2022, 06:28:40 PM
PrimeXBT

You've found one of the few sites that aren't vpn friendly though too (at least in my experience).

If you can find two sites that can cover what primexbt can do, do that, you'll be a lot safer.
996  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 06, 2022, 06:25:02 PM

same error??

It just says no connection but I can load up duckduckgo fine: https://duckduckgogg42xjoc72x3sjasowoarfbgcmvfimaftt6twagswzczad.onion/

(this was just a test I don't stand by/trust that link as I searched it up on clearnet duckduckgo over tor)
997  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Has anyone really tested bitcrack during brute Forcing?! on: August 06, 2022, 06:17:18 PM
Why is the generation of priv and public keys from bitcoin address archaic but the elliptic curve multiplication and the hash function can rather be used symmetrically? Which looks like the best way for a derivatives

Going of the word "derivatives" do you mean hierarchical determination (HD) wallets as a backup instead of using individual public-private key pairs? The difference here is an antire wallet can be store on a piece of paper/ahead of its use which can be used as a full backup without any risk of losing funds/keys because you've not backed up since your keypool got full/didn't print that private key.

There's also an argument for error reduction in HD wallets as writing down a nmemonic makes mistakes easier to find (electrum is a good example of how this can be done as you can select words as you type them so you'll know a lot of the time if something's written down wrong).
998  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Wallets advice, checklist on: August 06, 2022, 06:07:13 PM
What does the "files inside" bit mean?

If you have enough wallets/fund distribution to do this I'd recommend using a spreadsheet if you want to keep track of things (I often forget where I have some funds so things are more helpful for that). You could also make spv watching only versions of wallets (with bitcoinj or electrum but you might forgo some privacy this way).
999  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 06, 2022, 05:56:55 PM
why tor v3 link error? Onionsite Not Found

I'm able to reproduce this on mobile so must be on chipmixer's end, hopefully it gets fixed soon.
1000  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I don't understand the seed management on Electrum on: August 06, 2022, 05:52:08 PM
Most seed phrases have an entropy of (I'm not sure how many words are used for the checksum so just found the entropy of the first 10 words): 1,298,074,214,633,706,907,132,624,082,305,024 (204810)

This isn't as big as the keysize for private keys (unless you use a 256bit seed or you made your wallet a few years ago - it made different length seeds) but it's still very huge and uncrackable.
