1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 24, 2022, 07:04:41 PM
I'm starting to miss the old WO

They are all still out there.

These days I am devoting my energy to full time trans rights campaigning. But I've yet to decide whether I'm for or against them so playing both sides is wearing me out.

As for cryptoland, I've paid so little attention to anything beyond BTC I'm pretty sure I now know less than the average Polynesian grandma.

Defi, wut?

NFTs? Is this some sort of joke? No, really. Don't look away. Is this SOME SORT OF JOKE?

And I really don't give a shit. As for old time shitcoins because of them I was still poorer at the last peak than I was in 2017.

Un-fooking-believable.

See you at 100k.

I don't really see the point of a physical copy. It's vulnerable and a hassle to store. You can store the same information properly encrypted on multiple micro SD cards. No one will ever know what's on there and they're much smaller. Just make sure you have plenty of them as they're not very durable.
3  Economy / Speculation / Re: Give me your predictions for the next long term peak, and why. on: December 04, 2020, 11:55:40 PM
We either get massively disappointed or get a rocket ron so far up us our faces stretch around it.

Not once have I correctly predicted a peak and this time around it's the one I'd least want to predict of all. We have no idea who is watching closely but it'll be many, many more people than last time and many of those will be newly arriving serious players.

In that scenario 100 large could be dwarfed. I'm not sure I'd want to hang around for the hangover.

4  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dump tactics - where to protect your crypot's when during dump? on: December 04, 2020, 11:50:14 PM
Why do so many roll out stablecoins as THE option when there's no shortage of exchanges with real money? And some of have banking licences so that money is fully insured rather than being run out of a beach hut in the Bahamas.

It sounds like OP plans to 'time the market'. I doubt a newcomer would do a great job of that and nor would most people including me. You're better off riding it out with a significant portion remaining in BTC. The market can give you a beating before you know it's happened.
5  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: CryptoForum.org on: December 04, 2020, 11:47:00 PM
They tend to be different when they announce it, but what they did just copying almost all of bitcointalk useful threads.
I hope you are not trying to build that kind of forum.

That's kind of inevitable isn't it?

Many of them miss a trick and don't have well organised casual sections unrelated to crypto. Sometimes you want to talk about something else with the pals you've made. An expanded non crypto bit for various subjects might encourage more discourse and bring in some users. One 'off topic' forum is too general and they tend to be aimless and shapeless.
6  Economy / Economics / Re: Our new economic model could be defi on: December 04, 2020, 11:37:40 PM
The deciding factor will be what actual law makers do to it. ICO bros thought they were magically exempt from that boring old law stuff because 'it's on the internet' and then the last few years have been spent slowly hunting them down and mopping them up.

There comes a point where the real world butts up against someone's idealistic pet. The real world is likely to win. Maybe the deciding factor will be how decentralised they manage to get it but even then Bitcoin is pure vanilla in comparison and they may decide it's too far out to live.
7  Economy / Economics / Re: Is Peter helping bitcoin pump? on: December 04, 2020, 11:32:53 PM
Good old Streisand effect.

I can't believe he's being this stupid as his audience is the most natural possible fit for Bitcoin. Once they get past their lump of metal feelings they will discover it does many of the same things and some of them better.

Every gripe of his has them checking the price, and it's history, and wondering why their paperweight isn't doing the same. If he was truly committed to his cause he wouldn't mention BTC - ever.
8  Economy / Speculation / Re: 3rd times the charm 20K on: December 04, 2020, 11:21:51 PM
Could be a while yet. The most important thing is that it went for it. I really wasn't expecting that so soon. Every time it shies away from it just means when it does do it it'll happen with some serious conviction.

It could be tomorrow. It could be well into next year. Either works fine for me. We're in a great position.
9  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2020-12-03 BusinessInsider.com - Shark Tank investo Bitcoin needs ETF, volatile on: December 04, 2020, 10:46:23 PM
I wonder how swayed the SEC will be when everyone they share a line or two of ketamine with badgers them about doing something about an ETF. Give it another few years and they probably won't be hearing much else.

I wonder if they have an unwritten checklist to tick off before moving forward. Elsewhere there are an increasing number of options. By the time they ever do grind one out I expect it will have been routed around long before anyway so won't be the huge deal some expect.
10  Economy / Speculation / Re: Seems like the bullrun is over this year! on: December 04, 2020, 05:20:07 PM
I certainly wasn't expecting any of this so it's been a pleasant surprise. Maybe there'll be more soon but I'm not bothered. It shows potential for next year.

As for OP, I was severely underwater for nearly three long and boring years. Now I am not. If you can't take it after a handful of days maybe this isn't for you. And if it's not really your money that's an even more pisspoor idea. Still, if you wait long enough the chances are high you'll come good.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paypal BTC - Tread Carefully, If at All on: December 04, 2020, 05:05:47 PM
Interesting article. This is exactly what many Paypal users will want to do with their Bitcoin fun tokens. Not as if you can do much else with it anyway. If this is an issue Paypal should be upfront and very loud about limiting personal trading on there. They should have been fully expecting it.
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: will all countries accept crypto as currency? on: December 04, 2020, 04:58:42 PM
There are very few countries where it's specifically illegal.

In most places it doesn't have much of a legal status which doesn't mean it's illegal. If it's a deal between two people it doesn't matter anyway. If one person wants to pay in it and the other is willing to accept it then it's job jobbed.
13  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: CryptoForum.org on: December 04, 2020, 12:52:32 AM
What feature would you like to add to it?

Users and lots of them? There's nothing sadder than an empty forum and most start empty and remain that way.

In this day and age forums are on their way out unless already established. People do Facebook groups and IM stuff like Telegram or Discord. I think it's an unfortunate development as all that info effectively vapourises.

If I were starting one now I'd be looking to integrate features you see on social media like news feeds and price tickers would certainly tickle users. Anything extra to make it a little more than a blank page needing filling in.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the actual all-time high, really? (re: LFC's bet with Bossian) on: December 04, 2020, 12:12:48 AM
Would the Korean exchanges count on the ATH metric? Because those exchanges topped @ $20k or more AFAIK.

Negative.

South Korea is a closed market. No money can get in or out. That makes it an irrelevance compared to everywhere else. I'm surprised it's managed to remain relatively anchored to prices outside.
15  Economy / Speculation / Re: Taking Bitcoin profit in the bull run | Please Share your strategy on: December 03, 2020, 11:03:27 PM
We only know when the peak was a substantial amount of time afterwards and perhaps 20 people on the planet manage to sell at that moment. There's no way I'm clever or patient enough to time markets that way. Every time I though 'yup, this is it' it carried on upwards.

Similarly buying back at the right moment can be well over a year afterwards. I would've caved long before then. I really don't think most people have the psychological equipment to do it right.

My strategy will be to get rid of 50% in return for a figure I've settled on. I won't buy back and none of that money will ever return to BTC. After that I won't sell anything again.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Almost 20% of Paypal Users Trade Bitcoin Using the App on: December 03, 2020, 03:04:14 PM
I'd assume most users literally only use it when there's a "pay by paypal" button on a website, and therefore only log in, and pay for things. I'm not overly familiar with Paypal, and I haven't looked at this recent addition of cryptocurrency, and Paypal in depth. For US residents does it even advertise to existing customers that its been added? Like is there any pop up telling them its been added? Even if it was, I'd half expect them to just ignore it, and pay for what they want.

A couple of users on here have posted screen shots but I don't know whether they had to seek it out or whether there was a flashing sign at the top of a normal page.

The one and only time I log in to Paypal is to withdraw from it. I don't see any of their irritating offers of credit or cards. I'm fairly certain I'd miss the addition of Bitcoin unless it was screaming in my face.
17  Economy / Economics / Re: Visa is getting more interested in Crypto on: December 03, 2020, 03:01:40 PM
It's a matter of time before more companies do what paypal did. There's a lot of money to be made in Bitcoin and only a fool wouldn't see it.

Early companies that chose bitcoin like those US stores that accepted it early did it for publicity but those that do it now do it for the profit. In bull market people are more set towards spending and it is going to bring a lot of traffic to payment processors.

What I'm most interested to see is how these places react when things fly down the toilet again. It's easy to seem like a champ arriving at the foothills of a bull run. The reckoning is when we really learn what they're made of.

Maybe the stunning levels of deadness seen in 2014/15 and to a lesser extent 2018 won't happen again but there will still be a massive downturn in engagement.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Crypto users use VPN's ? You decide..... on: December 03, 2020, 02:44:34 PM
Users can get caught using VPNs with exchanges and stuff. Coinbase seem very sensitive to region changes. If you forget to log in or out when hitting places like that they may freak out.

I find it slightly ironic that people fret about privacy then choose the crappiest free VPN to address it. You're placing a big chunk of trust in these places. Doing your homework is important.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Almost 20% of Paypal Users Trade Bitcoin Using the App on: December 03, 2020, 02:32:39 PM
Twenty per cent of ALL Paypal users in the US? I find that totally impossible to believe. I doubt 20% of them even know it's there, let alone have had a dabble. Paypal is something you mindlessly log into to buy something. Not many go much further or explore whatever else it offers.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin transaction can be lost? forever stuck transaction in mempool on: December 03, 2020, 01:50:52 PM
Not this again! How does your price theory explain that between the 20th and 30th of November we had less than one day with fees over 50sat/b? Common, let me know how that fits with your scenario!

There's a difference between pump and hype. There's no wider excitement yet and may not be for quite a while. We'll have to see what fees do then when everyone's on heat. Of course we don't have Bitmain spamming fees this time around, or not yet, and that might've been the prime factor last time.
