501  Economy / Speculation / Re: Grayscale Buys 800% More Bitcoin Compared to Q1 2019 on: August 14, 2020, 11:02:18 AM
What would be gone? Without the altruism of the people in the beginning, there would be no Bitcoin Network. Plus if out of self-interest, everyone junked Core, and supported S2X and it destroyed the network, then how can Bitcoin enrich them? Or anyone.

"They" should TAKE CARE of the network that enriches them, not risk destroying it out of self-interest.

I applaud those who were here at the beginning. And there are enough who are still looking out for its well being. But that isn't automatically altruistic either. The people who were here first saw its potential and what it meant for the future, both their own and others. Even if there were no financial incentive at the beginning there was a technical, political and philosophical one.

S2X wasn't supported because it was a clear failure before it even got going. There would've been forks going off all over the place. And when someone ran the actual code it immediately broke. The majority's self interest in keeping things intact outweighed the self interest of the people trying to bone it.

That is the prime factor that will keep the system healthy.
502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Exactly 10 years ago Someone did a transfer of 184M BTC on: August 14, 2020, 10:44:40 AM
could there ever be a way that someone else is using the network to benefit his own needs while exploiting some bug in the network we cant even see?

or that's not possible and he is fooling me ?

At that time there were perhaps a few hundred or a few thousand people on the network in its entirety, and maybe fifty or fewer with the knowledge to know what this bug meant. These days there are millions of people using it and likely tens of thousands of competent eyes on it.

An undiscovered and ongoing bug that benefits the one person who found it would be uncovered pretty darned rapidly. If it wasn't due to the bug itself, it would be the benefit flowing to the one who found it. Anything erroneous would be pounced on by everyone else.
503  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-08-11] MicroStrategy Adopts Bitcoin as Primary Treasury Reserve Asset on: August 14, 2020, 10:31:07 AM
I think many people today are a little embarrassed by the statements they have made in the past about Bitcoin and may learn something from this experience. If you don't understand something and you don't have enough knowledge about it, it's better not to even comment on it, because sooner or later that statement may seem very strange, to say the least.

Yes. That's one of the odd things I've found about the rise of it. By all means express some scepticism but the hysterical and absolute doom shouted long and loud is daffy especially after you've made it clear you don't actually understand it properly. I would simply say I was yet to be convinced and was going to wait and see.
504  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-08-13] What Bitcoin Can Learn From Gold About Staying ‘Clean’ on: August 13, 2020, 04:26:09 PM
To me it's a bit like looking for a problem where there is no problem and looking for solutions even when we don't need them.

But as you point out exchanges already are making it a problem. And this class of investor will like the idea of all potential question marks being removed. I can imagine they may attempt to go down this road but the question is when and what will cause it to fall apart as it's likely to do.
505  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is merit and why do some people have up to thousands? on: August 13, 2020, 04:19:59 PM
A reward for hard work as per quality content creation or post that helps you grow in rank in this forum. Just like every reward, it is earned and not beg for! But then, for everyone you gain, it lives you with a part of it to send out.

It doesn't have to be hard work and often you can tell when someone is busting a gut and it's something of a turn off. If you write what you think other people want to read you can end up satisfying no one.

The best thing you can do is be yourself. Follow and develop your own interests. Don't pretend to be someone you're not and don't pander to others either. And a good question is just as relevant as a florid answer.

506  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Craig Steven Wright is a liar and a fraud - Tulip Trust addresses signed message on: August 13, 2020, 03:00:51 PM
Good old Craigy.

So far there has not been a single thing he has done that wasn't 100% predictable.

We know he's going to lie. We know he will never admit fault. We know he will never tap into that country-sized 'wealth'. We know he will never come up with anything creative, constructive or useful. We know he will lose every single legal entanglement he enters.

It's an unimpeachable procession of fail.

If he wants to become more than a comedy mannequin and object of irritation he needs to shake it up and do something surprising.

Even the biggest dunces pull it off every now and then. Ain't got high hopes for this one though.

This is an interesting one about gold's walled garden and the potential of something similar being applied to bitcoin.

In days gone by I would've immediately pooh poohed it, but with the ever increasing amount of  professional money and its use of custody, which means their bitcoin is already tucked away and thumbsed up, it seems like the type of thing they'd be very interested in investigating.

Is the wider market too powerful and dynamic and would this one be too stunted for it ever to work?

We've heard tales of virgin coin premiums from miners. An entirely 'safe' market may have quite the appeal. Obviously gold has its own problems which this market rose to deal with. Bitcoin doesn't have those problems but there are still those willing to pay for a seal of approval.
508  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you thought you had found the real satoshi with 99.9% certainty ... on: August 13, 2020, 02:32:10 PM
I'm terrible at keeping secrets so I hope it ain't me.

And I'd also be annoyed at him for being slack enough to put me in that position.

Straight to Fox News it is then. I'd give him a 30 minute head start.
509  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are DeFi projects next on SEC's watchlist? on: August 13, 2020, 02:26:39 PM
There were tons of abusive practices from icos and this will attract the same crowd and worse. By the time this hype is dead and gone legal types will have a lengthy shopping list of people who deserve their attention.

I can also believe there are still operators involved who don't think any laws apply to them ' because it's on the Internet.'
510  Economy / Speculation / Re: Grayscale Buys 800% More Bitcoin Compared to Q1 2019 on: August 13, 2020, 11:32:02 AM
No, I expect him, a Bitcoin CEO who wants to be enriched in Bitcoin, to not discredit Bitcoin, but help Bitcoin thrive and scale, not conspire with other CEOs and some miners to hard fork the network to a centralizing upgrade, without considering the community.

Bitcoin is all about self interest. If it wasn't and it depended on altruism or the consideration of others it would be long gone.

His self interest did not align with the majority's self interest. The S2X crew might just have believed they were doing us some sort of favour. No one else agreed and that cabal got schooled because of it. That's how it should be and that's how it is.

To the point brutality gets the job done and educates the naughty at the same time.
511  Economy / Economics / Re: Will African countries be developed? on: August 13, 2020, 11:27:38 AM
Regardless of the number of resources available, if not managed properly, the region would remain underdeveloped. Corruption and mismanagement are the major barriers in Africa.

I think that's the main one. Africa went straight from traditional ways of life to foreign plunder with nothing in the middle. The majority of the world is corrupt but many places also managed to develop at a reasonable pace to offset some of the misery it creates.

There's enough progress now in Africa for the corrupt to get fat on it and once they're ensconced they're dug in forever.
512  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin lands #27 as top assets by marketcap (Stocks, ETF and Crypto) on: August 13, 2020, 11:10:46 AM
The fact that Bitcoin is the 27th most traded asset in the world(if this statistic is actually accurate) means that there's still lots of potential for future growth of both the Bitcoin price and the Bitcoin market cap.

Down to 33 already.

That listing is purely on market cap, not the amount it's traded. That is a metric that would be interesting to compare it to but also even less relatable to stocks.
513  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Will Dex's Dominate the Cex's in near future? on: August 13, 2020, 10:53:02 AM
I agree, traders, specially newbies are very naive and would rather used centralised exchanges because that's what they learn from the market itself. But if you would have to look at it centralised exchanges are prone to hacks and lost of funds.

And then you will hear around those newbies bitching around when they get hacks or something went wrong, i.e., then can't withdraw. But it won't stop those noobs from using them not now, not when the market goes on another bull run.

Where the decentralised options would most definitely be better is at the shithole end of the market. Noobs would save themselves a lot of pain rejecting the piece of crap centralised options.

I don't think that'll ever happen though as many of them seem to have a verrry powerful attraction to the worst and most obscure and abusive places they can possibly find. I find out about 95% of the places I've never previously heard of from their squealing about being ravaged by them.
514  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin lands #27 as top assets by marketcap (Stocks, ETF and Crypto) on: August 13, 2020, 10:47:33 AM
Erm, where's gold? Where's Saudi Aramco? No doubt there are plenty of other gaping holes.

There IS a world beyond America despite what sites like this believe and of course Bitcoin itself trades everywhere around the world 24/7.
515  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Will Dex's Dominate the Cex's in near future? on: August 13, 2020, 10:37:27 AM
Nope. Never.

I hope they improve to the point where they're a viable choice for those who are inclined that way, but most people want their hand held and someone to moan to. That means centralised exchanges will get bigger and bigger so even if you would prefer to go decentralised the volume and liquidity of the centralised option will be too much temptation to resist.
516  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should we promote acceptance of "zero-conf transactions"? on: August 13, 2020, 10:08:18 AM
If I were a regular acceptee it's not something I'd encourage or put up with.

Going forward there'll no doubt be phases where low fee transactions will never go through in time and the more people there are the more attempts there'll be to cheat others. I'd expect many people who would never take the piss in real life would be inclined to give it a try on the internet.

Instead of exposing myself to that I'd be looking to accept other shitcoins and stuff like Coinbase internal wallet transfers.
517  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Overview on DeFi - a new hot trend in crypto on: August 13, 2020, 09:57:14 AM
https://www.coindesk.com/defi-meme-coin-yam-succumbs-to-fatal-rebase-bug

And this will happen lord knows how many more times before this particular trend burns out. ICOs attracted morons with a one page website and white paper but at least there wasn't much that could go wrong other than them raping you. This introduces an extra world of pain.

I have zero doubt a ton of money will be made. Anybody into this should make sure they secure that and then exit with a smile.
518  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: August 13, 2020, 08:54:00 AM
Shareholders (and let's be honest, hype buyers) may be happy now. We'll see how happy they are if BTC takes a dump! Tongue

If this was a brazen way to boost themselves by jumping on another hype train they may live to regret that. Ideally it's a clear-eyed financial decision but there's no way of controlling how it's going to be perceived by others.
519  Economy / Reputation / Re: The Turkish Complex of Some Eastern European Forum Members on: August 12, 2020, 09:56:13 PM
OMG, are you talking about MPOE-PR?  I remember that member from my early days of lurking on the forum, and I found his posts to be some of the most biting and entertaining ones I've read thus far.

He sticks to his blog where he does unpleasant things to naked women with large moustaches. I think the latest post was about strangling them.

And as far as I know all of it revolves around members not getting into the Chipmixer campaign, but it's been explained a number of times how competitive that campaign is and that members from all over the world have been rejected.

There's a large dose of mindlessness on display here. You basically have to be Miss World to get into the Chipmixer campaign now. I doubt I'd get in. Just being outraged and entitled isn't quite enough.

And I've seen it before with other creeds. One fella seemed to be threatening to go to some sort of Better Business Bureau because he wasn't taken on. I'm sure they would've been genuinely fascinated, and totally mystified, to hear from him.
520  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: August 12, 2020, 08:20:00 PM
That's an interesting find.  And yeah, it's a smart U-turn and it's kind of cool that he's had his eyes on bitcoin for that long.  That makes me think he probably knows what he's doing.

One thing professional finance people certainly aren't is sentimental when there's money in the air so the gradual acceptance that this thing might have actual legs on their part is going to be a monstrously powerful development.
