Edit: Does anyone know how to report a spammer to the mods?

Yeah, you can both report a spam post and in the report you can mention that the user needs a review of his post history from the Mods
Or
Do like I did. I contacted mprep and he suggested that I can do a list with the spammers.
And this is what I did :
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2977866.msg30599391#msg30599391

Nice work! This is actually the first and only user that I noticed, so I can't actually create a list. Maybe you can add this guy to your list if you think that he deserves a ban. Though I don't think that he broke any rules other than spamming one liners and shitty posts like the one quoted in the OP. Which got deleted so I don't think that you can add it as a proof, but I heard that some staff members can see deleted posts and thus they can confirm what I'm saying.
43  Other / Off-topic / Re: 😎 [ANN] The Utmost Epic, Totally Tubular sMerit Giveaway ~ 170 sM Available 😎 on: March 03, 2018, 11:01:00 PM
Thanks for the help, much appreciated! Now to the posts:

My idea to easily flag some of the shitposters using the current system:

While I was in the frog pond I came across this guy: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1659648
He posted +600 posts yet failed to get any merits! He even  started a thread just to say this:
Today Bitcoin is at $11,000.

If you buy Bitcoin at $1,000 after the price falls, you get/save $10,000. That's profit.  Smiley

When Bitcoin goes $1,000 to $2,000, you get $1,000 profit.  Wink
I reported the post and it has already been deleted...

So... My idea is that all members with a post count that is more than 100 times - or whatever the staff see fits - their earned merits should have their post history checked by the mods for a possible ban. I guess it could be implemented so those accounts automatically appear for the mods to check them.
Edit: Based on TheQuin suggestion, you can add time to the equation so that it only gives members with +X (eg. +100) posts in the last month.

Why wait for the shitposters to stop using the forums? Lets take action and start banning them!

44  Other / Meta / Re: Merits, an idea to spot shitposters based on posts/merits ratio! on: March 03, 2018, 10:14:43 PM
I just want you to understand that people are on this forum for different reasons and recommending a ban for low merit/post ratio is unacceptable by me.
Only ban 'shitposters' aka spammers even if they have a thousand merit.

I never said to ban users with a low merit/post ratio, what I said was:
should have their post history checked by the mods for a possible ban.

And btw no shitposter should ever get close to 100 merits not to say 1000, unless of course if he was abusing merits.

If we can see a huge amount of post in a short period of time report it directly to moderators,
Do you know what is the best way to report such a user?
45  Other / Meta / Re: Merits, an idea to spot shitposters based on posts/merits ratio! on: March 03, 2018, 04:42:42 PM
This is a great idea and I completely agree on this.
Nowadays because of the signature bounty campaigns and the minimum post count in a week, most of the users post just to increase their post count. I've seen some post with replies which are not at all related to the thread.
Right now, the forum is flooded with such users. This will bring a halt to this.

Or maybe instead of directly blocking the user, it would be better to put a limit on the number of posts so that they are still active on bitcointalk.

Most members agree that if you're here to spam signature campaigns then you have no place in these forums. At the same time bans don't have to be permanent and a second chance can be given to those spammy users.

By the way, if you see posts not related to the thread they're being posted in, go ahead and report them. I'm sure the mods will be deleting those posts.
46  Other / Meta / Re: Merits, an idea to spot shitposters based on posts/merits ratio! on: March 03, 2018, 04:28:38 PM
Seems like a good idea which I guess the staff already does that to an extent but there's still some holes in what you say IMO

  • A lot of people may not post in the regular sections of the forum. Merits are much rarer in sections like lending, services (apart form the merit threads) auctions and so on. It's common to do short to the point posts which aren't shitposts but they usually don't get much merit.
  • Merit distribution is currently rather on the slower side. Yeah the merit system is new and I know it's supposed to reward the contributing members but the thing is most of the merits are concentrated in two places. First the merit sources and the older members who started off at a much higher threshold and second with the merit farmers. Trading and resale of merit is pretty common at the "shady" level of stuff if you carefull observe the merit movements especially some of those highlighted in thread exposing some of these account farmers.

In the end you'll end up with a significantly large number of people who're flagged for a bad ratio for merits. Which leaves us not much better than before

It can be changed so that it shows users ranked full member and below. Anyway, I don't think a 100 post/merit ratio would flag any nonspammer no matter where and what you post.
47  Other / Meta / Re: Merits, an idea to spot shitposters based on posts/merits ratio! on: March 03, 2018, 03:38:49 PM
Why wait for the shitposters to stop using the forums? Lets take action and start banning them!

I really cannot understand the purpose of such a member making posts here. I mean they mus have realized that they are not going to get any merit points for future posts and thus will never rank up. Adding too many posts (even if they are shit posts) does take some time. Are they using some sort of bot to post these.
One possibility is that they are still hoping that the merit system will be taken back and then will rank based on the number of posts they made. Or they might be preparing the accounts with potential activity to sell later.

Though it's weird, both scenarios are possible. He is even a junior member which means he should wait some time between posts..
Whatever it is, the merit system can't stop all the shitposters and the remaining ones should be banned if we want the forums to be free of shitposts.
48  Other / Meta / Re: Merits, an idea to spot shitposters based on posts/merits ratio! on: March 03, 2018, 03:22:17 PM
Nice idea but you would have to include time into the equation. It would have to be the number of posts since 24th Jan 2018, not total posts. 600 posts over the last year is not a lot, 600 posts in a month is.
Could also do that. My idea could be implemented without time into the equation for new users - ranked member and below - as I don't think a hero/legendary member that has been here for over a year would threaten his account just to shitpost.

As for the account in my OP, those posts are from 11 January this year and it's a lot.

Anyway, if the admins think of implementing this idea they could add time to the equation if it gives them better results.

+600 posts in less than 2 months, mostly one liners, no merits, definitely a shit poster.

He opened a thread in Bitcoin Discussion just to say this:

Almost no one believes the results of any poll here. Open any poll of significance and place winning bets on it being skewed.
Haha, that's true.

Now that it comes to my mind, was your intention of this thread to encourage us to introduce bitcoin to people we know and make us think of the best ways to answer these frequently asked questions?
I'm kinda new to bitcoin my self and I've already been asked some of these questions a couple of times when I introduced Bitcoin to my family and close friends. I haven't really given them much thought and your post made me think about them.

I have edited my post. It's ok if you're looking for better answers. I not being a native English speaker find it hard sometimes to find the right words to explain stuff.

I'm adding your answer as the first part of the answer to the question, but I'd expect some more from others, as well.
It may be better if you state this in your first or second post so that other members won't just skip the answered questions but instead read their answers. This way new members may actually learn a thing or two.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Common Questions & Answers About Bitcoin: "Kill the FUD" Edition on: March 03, 2018, 06:33:34 AM
Q: Isn't it too late to get into Bitcoin?
It's never too late to get into Bitcoin, people said this when 1 BTC was worth 1000$ and now they regret not getting into it.

Q: Why is Bitcoin so expensive? I can't afford a bitcoin.
Bitcoin is expensive because there is high demand for it with a very limited supply. But don't worry, you don't have to buy a whole Bitcoin. You can buy 0.01 of Bitcoin at a time or 0.005 BTC or whatever that suits you. Fractions of bitcoin are called Satoshis and 1 BTC = 100 million Satoshis.

Q: Is Bitcoin safe?
It's safe as long as you keep your private keys safe, as in:
Not giving it to people you don't trust, not letting people you don't trust access your computer if the keys are stored on it, Keeping your computer free of malware.
Public and private keys come in pairs, every public key has a private key. The public key is the address that you give other people to send you bitcoin and everyone can see your public key. While the private key serves as a "password" for the bitcoins you receive to the public key, in order to spend those bitcoins you have to use the private key.

I wasn't able to give an accurate explanation without getting into the technical details, I would have said that we actually give a hash of the public key to receive bitcoin but explaining what a hash is can't be done without getting too technical Grin
I would actually like to hear from you on how to explain what is a private and a public key or we could both wait for someone to come and give a better explanation than mine.

Q: Who controls Bitcoin?
No one controls bitcoin, it's a decentralized cryptocurrency and its price depends on supply and demand.
Investing in bitcoin is similar to investing in the stock market, if there is high demand for a certain stock the shares of that stock increase in their price. The same goes for bitcoin, when the demand for bitcoin is high its price increases and when the demand is low its price decreases.
As for the supply part, the total amount of bitcoins is limited to 21 million bitcoins, of those almost 17 millions are already in the market. The rest gradually enters the market through miners as an incentive for them.

Maybe add "Who are bitcoin miners?" or "What is bitcoin mining?" to the questions. Grin

By the way, I've added your thread to my list, this way more people will be able to see it: List of Threads Giving Away Merits
55  Other / Meta / Re: List of Threads Giving Away Merits on: March 02, 2018, 09:57:08 AM
I've actually found that systems like this that will assess your historic posts and merit where appropriate have made me really think critically about what I want to post on and especially if I genuinely have anything to say. There are so many people on here that will just spurt out so much nonsense without a second thought or simply agreeing to a post without adding anything (maybe a like button would work for this, as meriting every post you agree with seems a bit much).

Bitcoin talk has become a plaster's radio of nothing posts that cover the interesting and informative base. The whole point of the merit system (unless im batshit insane) is to limit the amount of trash, one liners, and spam posts on here. People are embracing that idea in any way that they think will work. I don't have the merits throw around like some of the OPs of the listed threads but if i did i would start something similar. Let me see your last 10-20 posts and see if you are broadcasting news or spunk. If it prevents even 1% of people from jizzing all over the forum then isn't that another arrow in the merit systems quiver?

Some members think such posts help sig spammers get their accounts to the next rank. Though I can't say I totally disagree with them, I do agree with you, because if it's done the right way with a careful check of post history it will really help discover some under-merited posts without giving those merits to undeserved members.

I don't give any merit to people posting in those threads, and I don't respond to people asking me to review their posts. In fact sometimes I put them on ignore.

I've got my own standards for deciding on merit awards, and hopefully they aren't too far from the essential spirit of the forum. I feel that if you have to ask for merit, then I should consider the reason for your membership of this forum.

Nice philosophy you get there, but it's a bit extreme  Tongue
Please, first put yourself in the place of a new comer that has been trying so hard just to get those 10 merits but failed to get any, the kinds of those threads may help new members start their way into these forums and eventually something good may come out of them Grin
In the end the most of these threads are giving merits in ones and twos which is not a big deal. The big amounts "up to 20" are for exceptional work.
56  Other / Meta / Re: List of Threads Giving Away Merits on: March 02, 2018, 09:25:51 AM
This system is pretty flawed if we need lists of threads giving away merit. If it was working as intended this type of thing would be unnecessary.

Good job though for putting this together. Sad it's needed at the moment.

I don't think that the problem is in the list itself but in the need for those threads in the first place. And as romanovst pointed out, not all members got the time to go through all the posts in the forums just to find a couple that they think are merit worthy, those will make it easier for everyone.
Imo, as long as it doesn't prevent the original posters from spending their sMerits outside those threads just to save it for them then it's OK.
Thanks by the way ^_^

-snip-
Added. *thumps up*

The topic of this thread is already covered here IMO: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2727673.0.
There are some differences though. Have you tried contacting the owner of that thread?
I do think the content can be merged.

I actually haven't, but I think each list serves a different purpose. On the other hand, half of the threads in my post aren't in the services board and I don't know if they are considered as services or not.

57  Other / Meta / Re: I've still got 80 sMerit to give away. on: March 02, 2018, 12:32:45 AM

I've still got 80 sMerits because I don't go out hunting for posts to merit, but I just award them when I find a post that appeals to me. However, it is quite difficult to find these posts. The most promising boards ( the serious discussion ones ) tend to be neglected by most members. I don't visit the Frog Pond very much, as most of the threads seem to be worthless ( in my opinion ) long tail spam fests. I think I have given away too many on the Meta board - there are too many posts about Merit points, and I've just created another one. Smiley The beginners board ought to be the place for me to read threads, but that seems to be more about issues other than Bitcoin. Tech support has some interesting threads, but I'm not a power user of Bitcoin, so I'm not sure I'm qualified to make judgements there.

A bit off-topic reply but I'd like to ask you, what is the frog pond? I know you're talking about "Bitcoin Discussion" but are there any other boards that fall under your definition of "Frog Pond" Grin
It seems like I'm having the same trouble finding my favorite board... So what'd you suggest? what are those "promising boards"?

Question #6:
In Satoshi's old e-mails they imply that handling as many transactions as Visa should not be a problem.
What does this imply about the development of Bitcoin?
Specifically, what is one parameter that would need to be changed and to what value to accommodate such heavy transaction flow?

I didn't really get your first question but you may be referring to the the time Satoshi limited the block size to 1mb or to when he posted this:

It can be phased in, like:

if (blocknumber > 115000)
    maxblocksize = largerlimit

It can start being in versions way ahead, so by the time it reaches that block number and goes into effect, the older versions that don't have it are already obsolete.

When we're near the cutoff block number, I can put an alert to old versions to make sure they know they have to upgrade.

About the second question: The one parameter is the block size, I don't really know how much it would need to be increased but I would guess to a thousand times the current 1mb block size. Because the Bitcoin network is now handling around 210k transactions per day based on blockchain.info while visa is handling around 150 million.

By the way, thanks for trying to help us while making us learn something in the same time.
