I still need to swap that Speedy fan and one of the BitFenix, just to make sure the Speedy really is the cause of the higher temps. So, according to KnC's email, they could source some lower CFM, cheap unknown fan, but they could not source the publicly available BitFenix? Riiiigghhht.  Roll Eyes

I wonder if their forum will ever come back, since it looks like they are aiming to wash the site clean. Gotta love them quoting Satoshi Nakamoto. Like that quote somehow excuses them from screwing their customers by unapologetically going back on their 5% promise and building massive farms that kill any chance of us reaching ROI.  Just another bucket of excrement that they toss in our face. Angry

You have to move air over the added heatsinks.

If you buy one single 20" (500mm) 3 speed AC box/window fan you can cool everything for $20us.
They are quieter to me.
They have lower pitch because they rotate slower.

I ran my VRMs without any heatsinks all winter but I blow air over them.

Basically what happens is when you start it up, the flashing blue LED should start flashing in about 5 seconds or so after startup. But with this miner it doesnt. I need to shut it down, and start it back up a few times until those LED start flashing and then it works fine for days and days until it get shut down.

I am wondering if its the KNC Controller or the BeagleBone or something software related. It seems like a software issue to me.

Try it without power to the ASIC boards and see what happens.
You may have a power or ground issue.

I would think someone on here with electronics skills could show us/and or how to make one etc....can't be that hard (knc did so lol Smiley)
Looks like just a character display - you'd have to check what part it is, google for that, find identical or matching ones, hit up aliexpress/ebay/digikey/mouser/them new york city weirdos, and off you go.  Unless that board it's mounted on has special magic on it - I suspect it's just a breakout board though, but pictures are lacking clarity.

Any serial LCD designed for 3-5VDC operation prolly work fine.
I have a plasma display I was going to swap out (uses same serial interface)

I discovered that the LCD fucks things up occasionally and run without for reliability.

25  Economy / Service Discussion / Coinbase as an exchange. on: January 28, 2015, 10:02:30 PM
I do not endorse or advocate for Coinbase.

What follows is just one persons recent experience.

I signed up on Monday.
I was verified on Tuesday.
The funds from sale of BTC were on deposit in my bank on Wednesday.

All in all a mostly positive experience.

Things I liked.
The price quoted prior to transaction was in line with other exchanges.
I succeeded in using voice two party authentication.
(no cellphone required)
I elected to use bank credit/debit as the method of bank verification.
They state 'up to two days' for process that took a 16 hours to complete.
The BTC->U$D bank deposit arrived today as advertised.
The fee charged was calculated and clearly displayed before I confirmed transaction.
With minimum "Know Your Customer" verification can do 3,000.00 USD per day.
They have a $10,000 daily limit available by providing them with more verifyable personal data.

Things I do not like.
They use as a verification option, giving them your bank login credentials.
This is cause for concern. a two day wait is the option I chose.
They could do extreeme harm to those wanting instant verification and giving them credentials.
If one MUST go this route change password BEFORE and AFTER giving them your credentials.
They do provide another option.
Their 'email referral program' dox's user as 'special code' is first initial and last name.
The bank transactions are clearly identifiable to the casual bank observer as being BTC related.
Banks have been known to cancel an account on the grounds of relation to BTC.
My intention is to also test my bank in the process.

They charge 1% and cater to the USA market.
They will give you a dollar when you sign up.
They take it back and more in commission, "gas, grass, or ass no one rides for free".
If you are willing to dox yourself they will also give you a dollar for everyone you steer to them.
(you will not see them in my sig, a few bucks is not worth whatever anon I have remaining)
If trading is your passion they have commission free trades till end of March.
I did not explore their trading platform, no opinion on that aspect of their business.
They appear to be set up to also handle processing payment for goods in BTC for sellers, similar to Bitpay.

Final notes and further cautions.
I did not risk much BTC in the process.
I mined the BTC I used, I can prove origin of BTC.
I don't care if the bank account I used gets closed, no loans there and trivial deposits involved.
Only time will tell if they can handle high volume in the event they are successful long term.
3k per day is plenty for me to pay electric bills.
10k per day is not enough for many with ASICs to cash out on a short high price peak.
(miners are by definition long on BTC) Smiley

gox launched to favorable reviews, everything was great till it wasn't...
I hope it works out long term, I want the Winkelvoss twins to have US competition.

YMMV

Well on KNC forums someone posted that if KNC is really a company anymore

here it the knc thread if you want/need to take the time (not sure it is worth it) but still the link

http://forum.kncminer.com/forum/resellers-affilicates/general-questions/72446-knc-still-at-company

I replied imho they are NOT a CONSUMER company anymore and are into IPO bucks and commercial now

here was an example of the article I posted (there are a bunch of these and interviews by sam cole stating such)

http://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/tag/kncminer/

er ....me thinks KNC  will not be too pleased what do you give me for odds on NOT being banned for the above?

toast I be Swedish toast on that knc forums thread me thinks (along with the original poster)

the KNC ship is a sinking probably.....time to shoot the unruly passengers trying for the first class lifeboats

chuckle

Your post is still up.

If you DO get banned, no sympathy from me.
Is your current advertising tagline ALSO "probably" a scam and you know it???

You aided and abetted the GAW shitstorm at the expense of your fellow miners here.

@ the rest of the folks
They mentioned (in the thread linked by the above exit orifice) bonus by end of month as their 'goal'.
So we got that goin for us...

Again IMHO ..you will never see a physical Neptune shipped from the free Neptune offer...they will again imho offer a lame 6 month hosting of 3TH
on their arctic cloud mining operation with a take it or leave it ...take our bonus in this manner or move along...at this rate at best end of March at that point
you will be making dust BTC by that point in time

I don't think they have the $100,000 it would take to even ship 1000 bonus miners if they had them.
Likewise I doubt their ability to keep bonus hashing powered for 6 months.

They might have already sold the 28 & 20nm ASIC designs to fund their farm and the future 14nm "Black Hole" ASIC.

Good luck with that knc, you DO live in interesting times!

29  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: thermoelectric + Heatsink + fan ? on: January 15, 2015, 07:28:12 PM
how much cooler would the air be if a hook up a thermoelectric to a heatsink and a fan ?

Like this:   thermoelectric = 0    Heat Sink = E  Fan = S

0--E--S

would the air be any cooler or would it be a total waste ?

It can be done but you have to have a heatsink and fan on the HOT side too.

Thermoelectric use a LOT of power.

A small window air conditioner is prolly way more efficient.
Both have a hot side and a cool side.

30  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Need a Reliable PSU on: January 14, 2015, 11:59:49 PM
I am making a bitcoin (BTC) mining farm with 10 ANTMINER S5's.
https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=000201412...

IMPORTANT: I don't have to pay for power so efficiency doesn't matter.

Specifications
Hash Rate: 1155 GH/s ±5%
Power Consumption: 590 W (at the wall)
Power Efficiency: 0.51 J/GH (at the wall)
Rated Voltage: 12V
Dimensions: 298 mm x 137 mm x 155 mm
Cooling: 1x 12038 fan
Operating Conditions: 0 °C to 35 °C

Notes
PSU: A power supply unit is not included, and you will need to provide an ATX PSU. There are 4 PCI-e connectors for +12V DC input and all four are required. Do not connect more than one PSU to the same hashing board.

I am going to be running these 24/7

Reconsider the whole idea!!!
If you MUST, consider used for best value.
I'm not trying to ruin your fun, I'm trying to save you some pain.

You mentioned grampa's hanger...
(his hanger or rented?)
I hope you have checked that the circuit can handle the load.
If there are also vehicles with fuel nearby take extra precautions about FIRE.
Will gramps mind if you slow cook his aircraft?
For siting considerations think of miners as 24/7/365 electric heaters.

I went with server PSUs. 92% efficient.
I started with hand did wiring.
https://i.imgur.com/epKz23R.jpg
The gekko boards are a good idea, I have some now.
They work for 1800, 2000, and 2500 Watt IBM PSUs.
2kW PSUs are USD $50 each used including shipping (ebay)
They are 220VAC ONLY and you have to buy cables and connectors seperately

If I were doing it again today I'd use the gekko boards and have CABLES make me PCIe power cables out of 12/3AWG outdoor extension cord wire.
I know better than to do it again today though!

I run a 4kW rail(2 PSUs @ 2kW) for each 2kW of miner.
Server PSU can run 2 or more PSU on each rail.
Disregard the double PSU warning if you choose this path.
Target PSU @ 50% of rated capacity.
That is the sweet spot for most PSU efficiency.
If one fails another can do double duty in a pinch.
@ $50 each I also have spares.

Every miner I know knows where you can get a 'good deal' on used HW, LOL

last firmware update Neptune (5 months) then again maybe the Neptune firmware is complete (don't have one don't know) and all is well with it?

Current Nep FW is buggy.
They restart every couple of days.
Most people don't notice, it is quick for a restart.

It can be hard to notice if you don't pay attention to how many hours cgminer has been running.
There is ALWAYS a downward wiggle in the pool chart @ the same time.

@ Avenger

Why do you hang around here?
Do you own any mining HW?
EDIT
Serious questions above ^^^not rhetorical.

As far as I can tell you are anti-capitalist.
BTC is PURE capitalism.

The good, the bad, and the ugly.

You are(or were) one of the most prolific anti-anything knc kbd nerds here.
(not necessarily a bad thing!)
Are you admitting defeat?
It seems to me like the demise of knc is/was your goal.

I think HOW the refund momentum was dealt with,
along with the 5 cube decision injured them massively.
They could be producing > 20% more BTC from their investment if they had gone 4 cubes per Nep.
I think BTC @ 299 USD is the crushing blow.
ALL miners bet long on the price of the commodity.
All large mining operations of any commodity hurt financially when the price drops 50% in 6 months.
The larger they are the farther into the future they must make decisions.
BTC _IS_ kinda intangible, but it is not magic.

I don't trust their claims of success with the DC just like I don't believe there are any satisfied 20nm HW customers.
How do you choose to believe one thing and not the other?

No such thing as "to big to fail".
Fail they do, even if they are later bailed out it never erases the fail.

Still awaiting bonus Neptune from scammers knc

They better hurry up.  With the sp20 out  and  bitmain  s5 next  week is making  them less competitive on price and value.

Competitive in what?
Selling HW that will never ROI?
I doubt the competition is much better.

That is a loose/loose game with the current BTC price.

The nep 'nets'  about $150/mo. after electricity.
(between 20-30 days per BTC)
IF everything were static 66 months to pay for itself.

The diff has actually been flat for a month.

A bonus miner delivered today would bring that down to around 33 months (almost 3 years)
Assuming the price does not decline further.

Thats cruel and cold them shipping < 100% working miners,
of the few they manage to ship...
Welcome to 14 months ago when they shipped the die 0 crocks Grin

kfc have always and still do the bare minimum to fulfil their obligations and then endlessly promise firmware updates that will cure everything. Nothing has changed in 14 months, only a few more people have seen through them.

For giggles:
https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fcomputersweden.idg.se%2F2.2683%2F1.602340%2Foj-nu-blev-det-dalig-stamning&edit-text=

Their new Orama is too busy to answer any questions, but eventually says (via google translate):
"We only know that a customer's claim for compensation and threatened legal action. KNC Miners attitude is that this customer demands and threats are unfounded. We handle general requirements of our customers according to established procedures at the pace they alleged and act now as before in accordance with the conditions we have agreed with our customers. We comment in general, not rumors, competitors or alleged / current / potential legal process, "writes KNC Miners marketing and PR director in the mail.

So stop complaining everyone - you agreed with kfc they could ship you faulty/barely safe/functioning hardware  Wink

Where did you get this quote Avenger?

The clown acts publicly as if there is only a single customer with a single legal issue involved.

There are some 28nm folks that got shafted by their ineptitude at execution.
Someone @ kfc determined that shipping miners with fans held in place with twist ties, suitable for bread bags not international shipping was a good idea.

All 20nm CA batch customers know by now sammy &Co. put sand in the vaseline.

IMneverHO (<<--notice the huge disclaimer)
I think the whole current situation boils down to 2 very poor decisions by knc management.
First was bonus miners to stem the bleeding from Nep refunds.
This decision committed them to needing 33% more ASICs for 'remaining' CA customers.
I think their mouth wrote a check their ass can't cash.

Second was 5 ASIC per Nep instead of 4.
This decision committed them to needing an ADDITIONAL 25% more ASICs

They could have redone the PCB to include 12 DC/DC instead of 8.
But then they would 'loose face' with their power claims.

The difference is
4 ASIC and 48 DC/DC.
vs
5  ASIC and 40 DC/DC.

If ASIC were as common as DC/DC converters the decision would just be a matter of cost.
If an ASIC cost less than 8 DC/DC converters, it favors the 5 ASIC design.
I can buy 8 DC/DC converters for under USD$ 200 without a volume discount BTW.

The problem with this whole idea is that ASIC are NOT common.
As a matter of fact they are almost as rare as unobtainium.
Add the fact that their value to the customer RAPIDLY decreases over time.

I don't often 'should' on folks but...
knc SHOULD have done the original PCB artwork for 12 DC/DC converters.
This would cost no more per unpopulated PCB.
knc SHOULD have placed 2 power connectors on each PCB.
(cost more for 6 additional holes drilled and via's installed per PCB. (a few cents per)
Their original Oct 28nm PCBs WERE laid out for 2 PCIe power connectors for fucks sake,
it's not like the concept is foreign to them.

knc's whole relationship/life with DC/DC converter implimentation should accompany them to their approaching grave.
A large percentage of their software changes have been DC/DC related.
They have referred to the issues as 'ghosts' demonstrating their understanding of the root cause.
They continue to have issues with sleeping(can be ressurected) DC/DC converters.
Every block we roll the dice on dropping a die from a sleeper.
Then we loose 100% for a minute or so as the whole thing recovers.

It's been 6 months since 20nm launch.
It's been 6 months since knc determined actual yield.
They know WTF their obligation to customers is/was and have come up short.
The fab HAS tapeout already, couple months to make more wafers.
They did it 3 times now 28nmBTC, 20nmBTC, and whatever the Tit is.

My final bitch 'this post' is clocks.
KnC set the bar for customer expectations with their 28nm product.
They did not go out of their way to obfuscate clock settings.
knc DID NOT DELIVER minimum expectations for this customer re 20nm.
With the 20nm product they INTENTIONALLY artifically limit customer clock settings.

We KNOW the 20nm code is intended for optimization/maximization of clocks on the fly.
I'm left thinking they reserve this extra 'x' % improvement to skim off of in house product.
There are ways to get more out of each customers ASIC.
They have been in place the whole time.
The window for a few % making a difference closed 1-2 diffs after launch.
The OC rule for BTC is early on matters, later not so much.

Why would they do this?
See DC/DC quips above^^^
The fuckin things are on the verge of flames now with the single point of entry for power.
If their earlier claimes of safety are true...
The "Y" cables should come with some extra clocks.

knc brought a win/loose game to a win/win situation.
It's no suprise that the customers that end up loosing are now playing a loose/loose game.

Their cash flow situation 'appears' to be extreeme.
Why else would they bleed their customers refund cash for 6 months?
(knc appologists feel free to correct with accurate count of MONTHS the last guy waited)
I doubt they have the cash to even SHIP the bonus miners.
Add the fact that many in 'destination tax situations' will refuse shipment as they will be worth less that the tax owed.

I don't care if the cause is ineptitude or evil, the result is the same for the customer.
They might claim there is only one guy with a single issue.

I counterclaim they have not produced a single satisfied 20nm HW customer.
Not one!

Jelin, never mind cranky old homer. AWOL means something isn't where it should be when it is supposed to be, in other words 'absent without leave'.
If you look at the advanced page for my Titan, there is no entry for one of the DC/DC converters.

See how DC/DC #6 is missing for ASIC 3 in the image below ? It is AWOL.

! you might have a look inside the cube with a bright light and a magnifier.
without opening the cube it is possible to see if the heatsink on the DC/DC is the issue.
# 6 & 7 are on one end of the "E" plate.
