2041  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Everyone is a victim not just the Gox customers on: February 09, 2014, 08:26:21 PM
Bitcoin's only real use is to combat red tape. Without this, it's easily beaten by many other systems, for example a payment processor plus gold exchanges.
Bitcoin provides censorship-resistance (which you mentioned) and also freedom from counterparty risk (which you did not).

Backed currencies fail because you can't trust the people holding the backing to actually perform as promised. On a long enough timescale, the percentage of vaults that start defrauding the holders of their notes by performing undisclosed fractional reserves (a.k.a embezzlement )approaches 100%.
2042  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mark Karpeles (Mt Gox) is playing the following trick on: February 09, 2014, 08:23:10 PM
But wouldn't there be some evidence of this? A MtGox employee talking off the record in a chat, etc? Seems more likely employees are being directed to not blame it on any government entity/regulation to buy them as much time as possible.
Search the forums for people talking about their (US) banks refusing to wire money to Mt Gox and/or Bitstamp.
2043  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mark Karpeles (Mt Gox) is playing the following trick on: February 09, 2014, 07:14:32 PM
Haven't you ever dealt with bureaucrats before? Especially in the banking area, they don't always act directly. There are lots of things they can do that get results without laving a paper trail. All it takes is a suggestion that certain behavior might be problematic and banks will start "voluntarily" deciding to exercise their prerogative to refrain from doing business with troublesome customers or entities.
2044  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mark Karpeles (Mt Gox) is playing the following trick on: February 09, 2014, 02:49:45 PM
Because they had made it difficult to get Fiat out.
Mt Gox did not make it difficult to get fiat out - the US government and banking system did.
2045  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's time for a Bitcoin hodlday... on: February 09, 2014, 05:03:08 AM
what is this new hodl craze?

if you cant spell 'hold' please don't try turning it into a craze where others end up following.
the reason i think its a failed craze to start, is firstly you don't hold bitcoin as its not physical. you can:
possess
own
control
hoard

so the hodl word which i have seen over a dozen people now use in the last 48 hours, is a total failure
I guess you missed that thread.

Search for topics in the Speculation section with subject line "I am hodling"
2046  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Cocks on: February 09, 2014, 05:01:59 AM
Not sure if you all have checked their twitter account it looks like Mt.Cocks is in its death throws.....want to watch a company die?

https://twitter.com/MtGox
Mt Gox has been in its death throes since 2011, yet somehow it manages to stick around.

I'll just leave this here:

Your "score" going down is a terrible reason to not report, it's not like anyone else can see it.
It's extremely demotivating. If you aren't going to show reporters which of their reports were marked as invalid, then it would be better not to show that number at all.
2049  Other / Meta / Re: End of newbie restrictions; ban changes on: February 08, 2014, 09:37:38 PM
If it gets too extreme, I'll just begin deleting the more unoriginal/generic/short threads by default. Until now, I only really deleted absolutely useless threads which are certainly spam and serve no purpose.

In general though, if something particular annoys you, just report it.

So far, my report rate has been 100%, but i worry about it dropping. I'm afraid that i'll become too persnickity.
I stopped reporting because my percentage would drop inexplicably, with no indication of what the problem was. There's no reason to show somebody a metric and not give them feedback about why it's changing - that's just an exercise in frustration.
2050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to NOT be a victim of a sting operation on: February 08, 2014, 02:16:05 PM
The US is really a third world police state. In most of the civilized world it's just illegal for the police to incite to crime.

Plus, is all this a joke? So they arrested two guys because the cops told them "I will use this money to buy stolen goods"? An US judge will accept that bs? Really? Again, in a civilized country the judge would to those cops to gtfo and to stop harassing citizens.
It's even worse than that. The cops could also be lying about mentioning stolen goods, and it hardly matters.

2052  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How Can You Not Trust Mark Karpeles (Gox CEO)? on: February 08, 2014, 03:06:46 AM
Even though it looks funny, those balance ball chairs are actually better for your back than regular chairs.

I don't think so, it has no back support. I can not last 5 minutes on those balls due to my back pain, but I can sit in regular chairs all day long.
Sitting in chairs that have back support is why your back muscles get weak in the first place.
2053  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shrem's kidnapping reveals slavish mindset of "public Bitcoin figures" on: February 07, 2014, 05:03:46 PM

You seem to be saying that whatever the men in suits write down is right. I simply do not subscribe to that belief.

You too seem to understand my position and I respect your's. If there is any one thing about the USA that is great, it is the fact that people like you and I can disagree on beliefs and live in peace.
Go to hell you lying fuck.

No, we can't "disagree on beliefs and live in peace". One side has an army of armed mercenaries who kick the teeth in of anyone who disagrees with them.

What you're actually saying is this: "If there is any one thing about the USA that is great, it is the fact that if people like you I disagree on beliefs, then people like you have to obey people like me in order to live in peace."

If you're going to be an outright sociopath, then do it openly at least and stop insulting our intelligence. Take your smug disingenuity and shove it up your ass.

SR 2.0=FBI honeypot
SR 3.0=FBI honeypot
SR 4.0=FBI honeypot

Doubtful.
And still, just use vendors recommended by others and PGP!

Recommended by other FBI agents, and PGP that FBI agents provide or substitute their own public keys for?

The server(s) were physically seized, so totalitarians could easily take over SR operations and change anything about it to tyranny's advantage.

You just need to trust the vendor. That's how PGP works.
And the FBI will hardly sell you drugs... they are not a dealer and not after small consumers.

PGP doesn't work if you blindly trust keys stored/sent on a website that a malicious third-party controls. PGP only works if you physically meet your counterparty and trust circle members and obtain their key fingerprints directly from them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_signing_party

The FBI/DEA/WTF will sell whatever they need to to whomever they need to, to perpetuate the war on victimless civil liberties through persecution of same.

Seriously, how can you be this ignorant of lawless enforcement tactics and still be on the internet?
PGP key signing is quite broken from a usability standpoint, ever since it's been introduced.

If someone has the time and inclination, here's how to fix it: http://bitcoinism.blogspot.com/2013/09/building-pgp-web-of-trust-that-people.html

2056  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shrem's kidnapping reveals slavish mindset of "public Bitcoin figures" on: February 05, 2014, 11:11:06 PM
Indeed, this is a KIDNAPPING, not an arrest.
There is no difference between the two.

The fact that some kidnappers wear costumes does not change their actions from kidnapping to something that isn't kidnapping. Clothing isn't magical.
2057  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-01-29] The Emerging Bitcoin Civil War on: January 31, 2014, 05:06:36 AM
Effective countermeasures will result in Bitcoin becoming worthless for doing any legal trade.
So?

Billions of people in the world survive in the informal economy.
2058  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2014-01-30 Arrest of charlie shrem shows dangerously repressive US police on: January 30, 2014, 07:39:56 PM
Police don't choose what laws they are going to uphold.
Bullshit.

You're out of touch with reality to the extent of being a danger to yourself and others, or else a paid shill.
2059  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-01-29] The Emerging Bitcoin Civil War on: January 30, 2014, 05:54:47 PM
We've already got "silent" nodes sharing subnets with dot-gov's listening on the network to figure out where transactions originate and correlate network addresses to bitcoin addresses.  We've already got snoops dropping 'dust' on addresses to see whose client spends the dust (and therefore reveals who must own the addresses).  We've already got coin marketplaces dealing with know-your-customer laws and providing information on demand to law enforcement.  I don't see us getting rid of any of those things in the current climate.
Countermeasures for all those can and will develop more quickly than they can keep up with.

The last time we tried to get someone to enforce this he was given mod status and  then went nuts and then had it taken away.
