MONERO MADNESS

Hey guys, decided it might be fun for some of us who would like to try our luck in picking out our own brackets for March Madness this year!  Since probably everyone on here (including my self) doesn't really keep up with college basketball (in the U.S.), I decided it would be equally as fair to win some Monero and will make it somewhat enjoyable/interesting to watch a game if someone has it on their T.V. at a friends house or out to eat at some bar.

So here's what I'm thinking:

- 1 entry per user
- 10 XMR to play  ... ?? up for discussion ?? (somewhere around 5-25 XMR)
- Figured going through ESPN.com would be easiest to set up our brackets (very simple to sign up a username)

Since ESPN doesn't allow gambling, I figured we will just trust each other to pay up at the end of the bracket.  If you would like to play, sign up on ESPN and message me on either of the ANN or speculation threads or PM me.  Since this is gambling that's based on trust of the individual to pay up if he/she loses, then we as a group need to approve the user wanting to join.  Obviously, this is the best way to avoid trolls and/or people who have valid marks of negative trust.  Preferably, users on here need to be above a jr. member to join the group.  If there are people who join the group who are not accepted to participate, and they win, then the person with the highest points earned on their bracket will win.  When signing up to ESPN, I would prefer that you use your bitcointalk name for your ESPN username to keep things simple on determining who is who.

IF THERE IS SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY WITH OTHER ALT COINS:  I'm open to accepting you, but if you lose you are required to shapeshift your altcoin to XMR and pay it out toward the winners address.

List of "approved" participants as of right now:

1) phishead (floam412)
2) tifozi
3) jwinterm (jwinterm113)

---------------------------------------------------

Group Name: Monero
Password: blockchain  ... (didn't know what else to put)

Here's a direct link:
http://games.espn.go.com/tournament-challenge-bracket/en/group?invitesource=email&groupID=1427554&inviteuser=ezQyRjI1MzNFLTBGQTYtNEY2Qi1BN0Y0LTk1OEMyMDVBNDE2Qn0%3D&ex_cid=invite-email-tcmen&groupp=YmxvY2tjaGFpbg%3D%3D

Let me know if you guys are interested or not! Should be fun if we get a couple players to throw in 10 (or so) XMR.  May the best dudero win  Grin

An escrow upon entry would make sure no one feels any desire to not pay after the fact. Smiley This is winner-take-all right?

Ahh, I guess you have a point... I thought of doing this way too late to garner much attention and planning. The tournament has already started, so now it's kind of pointless to do an escrow now. I've never gambled with tifozi, but I have with jwinterm on the past super bowl (and lost a good chunk of XMR lol), but I have faith in these guys to keep their word. And yeah it's winner takes all.

Oh if it's just the 3 of you there's no concern, IMO.

Carry on.  Grin

There is a guide/example here:

"Generate simplewallet based on MyMonero 13 word mnemonic seed"

https://github.com/moneroexamples/mymonero-simplewallet

I assume you were replying to this?

If I understood correctly (bear in mind that this rarely happens Tongue) fluffypony was referring to the possibility of MITM attacks.

In part yes, but also malware on your computer. There is no substitute for cold storage, paper wallets, good hardware wallets, etc.

Quote
So, afaik, there is nothing less secure with the wallets created with mymonero (discounting the 13 vs 24 word mnemonic).

If you, for whatever reason, used mymonero to create a coldish wallet, and never login again, you should be pretty safeish.

That is true assuming you are completely sure that nothing was compromised when you created it. Hard to really know that.

Well, what I wanted to convey is that, if one has already created the wallet for cold storage in mymonero, either the coins are already gone or they are still there. Tongue
Therefore, accessing mymonero just to transfer the coins to another cold storage may in fact worsen your chances of getting hacked. It would be safer to wait for the code to restore short mnemonic seeds to be available for offline use. Either through simplewallet or a third party client.
Another option is to do the conversion from 13 to 25 words.  Who has link(s) to how you do that?  I'm very interested.

Note this isn't possible (well there's a ~6% chance it's possible). dEBRUYNE's link above can create a .keys file for you from a MyMonero seed (if I understand it correctly from a quick glance), but the latest simplewallet can now also restore from spend and view private keys (get the from MyMonero or http://xmr.llcoins.net/).

The best option for people looking for compatibility as new wallet users is to create a 25-word seed from one of the many places and log into MyMonero with that.

However my favorite bet was the 1.10x multiplier which carries a 90% chance of winning. Maybe I'm just bad at arithmetic (I am), but this bet seems to carry no house edge? I can bet 10 Monero, and if I roll less than 90.00 (or greater than 10.00, players choice), I win eleven back. This also seems to be the most popular bet on the site.

Great review Mr. Pegasus. Very useful and thanks for doing it.

He forgot to mention that FluffyPony is taking 10% of all winnings, and he also did not mention that the highest winner (21800) Moneros is also another Monero develop Othe. So much for developing the coin

It's 10% of site *profits*, which seems reasonable enough to me.

AP, your arithmetic is bad. You have a 9/10th chance of winning, but payout is 11/10ths. A bet at 90% should pay out 10/9ths or 11.1%.

Can you make a view-key from the mnemonic seeds, easy?

perhaps with http://xmrtests.llcoins.net/addresstests.html ?

You can just use http://xmr.llcoins.net/ as well. Always remember keeping your mnemonic safe is of utmost importance.

Is it a sure sign of becoming insane when you start to enjoy the TrueCryptonaire postings?  Undecided

I'm asking myself this question as well since some time.
I've put my definite answer on hold, waiting for him to switch to whatever direction is opposite to mine. (so basically, when he becomes uber-ultra-bearish).
I speculate I'll enjoy less then.

This meta speculation is becoming too much for me to bear.

Node count in China continues to gradually grow: https://monerohash.com/nodes-distribution.html

If you live in China, please start more nodes.  Then contact your favorite Chinese exchanges and ask for Monero trading.

There's a node close to me, which sort of blows my mind.

So what area are you located?

Vancouver Island, Canada.  I've yet to meet someone who knows what a cryptocurrency is, other than those I've introduced.  Ya, I live in the back woods  Tongue

I hope to add a node or three of my own... er, soon.

A Monero wizard possibly lives close to you.

If someone wants to have up to date USDXMR charts, you can now check bit.ly/xmrcharts ! Smiley
Data: poloniex for XMRBTC and bitcoinaverage for BTCUSD

Now if we can just get back to the opening days of Monero and the price on 6/21/14 of $5.07

That's a nice starting point to end up at.

^That makes so much sense.
129  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 09, 2016, 01:13:51 AM
Guys I recently bought some monero for the first time.
Is it smart to keep these coins for the long term?
And if so how long term should I think, because this coin has been here for a long time now.
And I think this coin is still kinda underpriced, But is it smart to keep in on the exchange?
Or is monero easy to transfer to your wallet and keep it safely there?

Instructions for the wallet are here:

https://github.com/monero-project/monero-site/blob/master/knowledge-base/user-guides/create_wallet.md

Alternatively, you can create a cold paper wallet:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/48cgmd/an_extensive_guide_for_securely_generating_an/

Holy crap those instructions on github would scare away anyone with an interest in Monero. I use LightWallet2 on Windows, works well enough but better wallets with GUIs should be a priority. At least there is MyMonero.com for getting started.

Those cold wallet instructions are like the super paranoid version.

For the less paranoid, who are confident their current system isn't compromised (nor the website), just go to https://moneroaddress.org/ and print off a seed/viewkey(optional)/address.

Most anyone planning to store medium-to-large amounts long term should do so via paper wallets. You bypass *so* much risk doing so.

The following is an idea requesting very modest funding. The way it is presented is good but being my usual clueless self I have no way of evaluating it. Please help in doing so.

https://forum.getmonero.org/6/ideas/2504/improving-developer-guides-to-include-simplewallet-examples-and-bitmonerod-methods-and-examples

I support it, and the rate seems pretty reasonable. Of course, in my head, Monero is still worth 50 cents. Grin

Lastly, for HDD users looking for better performance, the experimental performance branch in development is available for testing at exp/performance here:

https://github.com/warptangent/bitmonero/branches

This includes updates that dramatically improve the daemon's interaction with the wallet when dealing with txs that belong to you (e.g. wallet refresh from scratch on a wallet with many txs).

It also includes updates from hyc, the author of LMDB, that improves block storage efficiency.

The latest set of updates I made were pushed yesterday, which deal with transaction storage, notably decreasing the size of the database.

Note that this branch is incompatible with the master branch (and release builds). The two cannot use the same database.

To try it out:

Code:
git clone https://github.com/warptangent/bitmonero -b exp/performance

It's compiled with:
Code:
BERKELEY_DB=0 make -j3 release

All testers should remember it's an experimental branch in development. The improvements also help on SSD, but are especially noticeable for those with slow storage. This is planned to be merged into the master in the future, after further work.

Testing is welcome by all. Remember that the daemon and importer have the --data-dir option, so a separate database can be used for testing.

I can provide Windows binaries if anyone wants them.

I guess every wallet created by simplewallet has to be refreshed to catch up the blockchain? And this has to be done to every wallet. Also for view-only-wallets. It takes a time. This is not so nice once the bitmonerod has to be also get synchronized with the blockchain. Which take a time.

So. It would be great if MyMonero.com was added with a such feature which can be used to check a balance of an address. It would be a kind of a online view-only-wallet. By just giving the address and the viewkey the balance can be seen.

New wallets take very little time to refresh, less than 1 minute for me. If you're restoring from seed or generating a bunch of view-only wallets, then yeah it's gonna take awhile.
134  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: March 03, 2016, 09:18:52 PM
When I am using this command

Quote
./simplewallet --generate-from-view-key address:viewkey:filename

to create a view-only-wallet and use a faulty address, simplewallet will tell it is faulty address.

But when I use purposely a faulty view-key, simplewallet does not complain anything. It just creates a view-only-wallet. And that wallet can be opened. But I guess it will only show zero balance. Is this featere of simplewallet ok?

What version of simplewallet are you running?

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/commit/f6abc5324f602ded6a0424445c033f5a8622ab22

Edit: I don't think this is in a tagged release yet.

I dont know how to check the version. But I downloaded this about three moths ago.

This is from less than a month ago, so you don't have it. It'll be included in the upcoming release (within the next week or two). Thanks for the report.

is there a GUI wallet?

Not yet, we recently funded a proposal to get it finished. See (there are also some screenshots there):

https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required/2476/the-official-qt-gui-project

His work and the activity can be followed on:

https://github.com/mbg033?tab=activity

https://github.com/mbg033/monero-core

https://github.com/mbg033/bitmonero

The current options are:

-MyMonero, which is a web wallet and very convenient to use -> https://MyMonero.com.

-Simplewallet, this is a CLI, which might have a bit of a learning curve but does better in preserving your privacy. Binaries here -> https://getmonero.org/downloads/. You need to sync the whole blockchain from scratch though to use simplewallet. Syncing from scratch is done with the daemon (bitmonerod). If you want, I can walk you through on how to use simplewallet at IRC. Alternatively, feel free to ask any questions here.

-Jwinterm's lightwallet, which uses either your own or a remote node. See -> https://getmonero.org/getting-started/choose (at the bottom). Instructions on how to run a remote node here -> https://www.moneroclub.com/node

-Lastly, there is https://Moneroaddress.org which can be used to generate a paper wallet. It is simply a port of -> https://github.com/moneromooo-monero/monero-wallet-generator and can be used offline.

Again, if you have any question, don't hesistate to ask!

So, I'm still confused about generating a secure paper wallet... if I were to bring up the web page, disconnect my computer from the internet and then generate a new wallet while offline, would that be acceptable in terms of security? I want to create a paper wallet, but I need a ELI5 version of what to do to create something that's very secure to store my xmr.

Also, if I deposit xmr into said paper wallet... how do I view the amount of xmr I have on there and spend them if I want later on down the road?

For your first question/scenario, it just depends on how paranoid you are (which may in turn depend on the amount). If you take your computer offline before generating, never commit the generated seed to disk, and restart before reconnecting, then you're very likely going to be ok.

You can tell how much money is in the paper wallet by noting when you send money to it. Wink

You could also save the viewkey and create a watch-only wallet that would use resources to make sure no one else has somehow deposited funds to your cold wallet. Smiley

If you ever spend from the "cold wallet" (which doesn't make sense to me), then balance calculation becomes more difficult (but will be reported by the program that spent the funds).

Edit: there is a simple-ish tool that can confirm that your cold wallet did indeed receive what you think you sent to it (like http://xmr.llcoins.net/checktx.html). This takes very little processing since it's only checking a specific transaction.
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 26, 2016, 06:47:19 PM
Mymonero.com used to accept 25 word seeds until a few days ago.
I don't think mymonero.com accepts 25 word seeds any more.  I can't get it to work.
If this is right, then the only way to have a wallet compatible with both moneroaddress.org and mymonero.com is to do an import, which costs 10 xmr.
Am I correct?

You are incorrect. Log in works fine, it just asks if you want to import your transactions (normal). Just select "Don't import transactions".

This community is so "polluted" ...

iCEBRAKER was a former CEO of Hashfast, criminal ASIC scammer with a lawsuit in progress.
No wonder he's all-in in Monero, he had to 'wash' his stolen bitcoins...

I see this thrown around a lot, but without any accompanying evidence. Obviously the nick iCEBREAKER appears to have been involved somehow, but in what capacity no one seems to know.

I am not sure either if it confirmed it was him. In one of the screenshots he states:

Quote
To be fair, it's possible the site was under attack. Haters abound.

Wouldn't he know for sure if he was the CEO? Not trying to defend anyone here, but the evidence is kind of inconclusive.

Haha, of course he would know. As far as I've seen, he doesn't talk about it.
