Someone should make a Farmville clone that uses BTC.

443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My account request was rejected by MtGox - what should I do? on: June 24, 2011, 05:29:49 AM
Thanks, Imperi. I think I know why I was rejected now.

It literally took me all night to get a definitive answer. I think I can sleep now.
444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX SO SICK OF THEIR BULLSHiT Should start a class action suite on: June 24, 2011, 05:16:14 AM
I don't think most people here are anarchists.

Really? By what definition of 'anarchist'?
Excluding the anti-bitcoin trolls here, I'd say most of the the rest would be supportive of the intrinsic aims of the bitcoin system. Which are to provide a means of freely trading independent of governmental inspection and control.

Are you going to claim that is _not_ a fundamentally anarchistic objective?

Remember, 'anarchism' does not imply public disorder. It implies absence of a centralized means of _enforcing_ (someone's idea of) order.

A society can be both 'anarchistic' and ordered, peaceful, prosperous and stable. It all depends on the people involved, and their ideals.

I don't really feel like to debating this, philoso-babble is for the trolls... I'm sure someone else can answer your questions.
445  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hey MtGox wheres my recovery email? on: June 24, 2011, 05:08:25 AM
so, 48,685 people are not serious about bitcoin, but maybe at most 12,315 are serious.

less than 20% are serious.

hrrrmmmm.

Well I for one made a dummy account just to check something with usernames. Of course I didn't make a ticket for it.
446  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My account request was rejected by MtGox - what should I do? on: June 24, 2011, 05:06:47 AM
01:01 < MagicalTux> anyway if you got more than ~$100 worth of bitcoin/usd and didn't
provide a last balance, the system will auto-reject
447  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hey MtGox wheres my recovery email? on: June 24, 2011, 05:02:15 AM
1222 confirmed, 426 refused, 10667 pending........

what about the other 48,685 accounts???

I don't think they put out tickets to get theirs back. Lots of people sign up for things on the Internet and don't use them, or have stopped using them.
448  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX SO SICK OF THEIR BULLSHiT Should start a class action suite on: June 24, 2011, 04:59:39 AM
Very amusing to see people all excited about a virtual currency independent of government, then want to use the legal system to recover their losses when things go wrong.

Lets just review some basic facts.
The very existence of present national governments depends on their ability (in cahoots with the banks) to create and control the (fiat) currency universally used for commerce. Undermine that fiat, fractional reserve money machine, and all current governments would rapidly go pooof and vanish in a cloud of spitting, self-devouring chaos.

And this is _why_ we all like the fundamental concept of Bitcoin, because we hate the government and everything it stands for, right?

Except... the legal system is created, maintained and enforced by government. It is _part_ of the government.

It's true there's a long, long way to go before Bitcoin or anything like it makes an actual dent in government power. But the principle and intent are there. So going crying to the lawyers about your Bitcoin losses has a pretty strong small of hypocrisy.

On the other hand, starting a class action suit might be a good way to find out what the establishment wants with regard to Bitcoin. See how much official cooperation or obstruction you get.

I don't think most people here are anarchists.
449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price is too high at 20$/BTC on: June 24, 2011, 04:55:05 AM
I think we will find that a major, if not the predominate use of BTC, will be as a store of value.  You know, the _other_ function of money.  Using BTC for ordinary and "legal" trade has a blizzard of intractable problems with no obvious (to me) benefit.  How is BTC better than Paypal if you plan to obey the "law" ?

1)  Bitcoin transfers are cheaper.

2)  Bitcoin gift transfers do not require that both parties are registered with the same website.

3)  Bitcoin does not discriminate against users who live an certain countries.

4)  It's impossible to violate the terms of service or policies of Bitcoin.

5)  If you are from certain countries, using Bitcoin doesn't contribute to the tax base of your perceived (true or not) oppressor or occupier nation.

6)  Bitcoin transactions between two people can occur off of the Internet altogether, as there is no server necessary to actually perform the transaction.

7)  If you are the vendor, Bitcoin won't take back your sales revenue because someone says their account was hacked or because they claimed that you defrauded them; nor can Bitcoin reverse any transactions for any  reason without your consent.

Cool  Bitcoin won't submit tax reporting on you if you exceed $600 in sales in a single year.

But you're right, there is no obvious benefit to using Bitcoin over Paypal for legitimate transactions, to you.

I agree with all the above... but Bitcoins would be so much better if I didn't lose 1/5 of them at Mtgox.

All that I can say about that is take a hint from your great-grandmother and learn a bit more distrust of banking institutions.  I had a trade account at MtGox as well, but I have less than 5% of my bitcoins holdings even exposed to the Internet in total.  MtGox had less than 2%.  Yes, it sucks.  But never risk what you can't afford to lose, and there is no logical reason to keep a vast sum of coins at MtGox, or any other exchange, unless you intended to risk them in speculative plays.

I bought a bunch, and was withdrawing the max each day. Didn't make it to the end. I definitely didn't plan on keeping them there.

I filled in the blanks and it says I'd get a recovery email asking me to provide proof but I aint got that email? Can you help?

I'm beside myself with worry here like a little bitch thats lost her knickers in the sandpit.

kthxbye

Just now...

00:49 < eleorea> MagicalTux: any info on approval/rejection ratio?
00:50 < MagicalTux> 1222 confirmed, 426 refused, 10667 pending

He's talking about the email that redirects you to the "Submit Proofs Page" I believe.

Oh, my bad. Sorry I'm kinda out of it right now.

453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX has accounts with bogus balances ! on: June 24, 2011, 04:29:28 AM
If you were there, did you ask how many days they have known this?

It's got to be only since the rollback was complete and they started processing account claims. I've got a log from the past several hours if anyone wants it.

Also, this was just asked:

"<MagicalTux> [13:18:59] <Ooofo> MagicalTux, on these corrupt histories, do you at least know what the balances are supposed to be? <- yes"

So he knows what the balances are, it's just sounds like accounts with really old early transactions don't add up to the balances. Thus he needs to process them differently or manually correct them, I assume.

Phew. That's quite a bit less disparaging than the thought that people could lose money because of corrupted histories.

I was about to post something to the same effect. It seems like they have it sorted out but it's just making the process take longer.

No, didn't ask that, I was mostly there to ask questions about my account.
455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / MTGOX has accounts with bogus balances ! [edit: it's not so bad] on: June 24, 2011, 04:09:40 AM
00:05 < Herodes> imperi: make sure not to leave the house. U never know what might
                 happen. Shocked
00:05 < Herodes> \o/
00:05 < MagicalTux> some people have bogus balances
00:06 < Herodes> what do you mean by bogus balances?
00:06 < MagicalTux> some of the really old accounts have a corrupted history, causing the
                    balance to be wrong

00:08 < MagicalTux> I fixed the trade entries so now when you buy 1 BTC it shows you
                    bought 1 BTC
00:08 < go1dfish> MagicalTux: if you stored a running balance separately...
00:08 < x6763> MagicalTux: nice, i like that!
00:08 < go1dfish> and that was used to determine if someone had enough to make a trade...
00:08 < go1dfish> and someone inflated their balance...
00:08 -!- Vandroiy is now known as VandroiyOtherPC
00:09 < go1dfish> rerunning the transaction log and getting negative balances is exactly
                  what would happen I think
00:09 < MagicalTux> go1dfish: some of those accounts are really old, so I wonder
00:09 < MagicalTux> I'll be comparing old & new balances~

The plot thickens... he went on to say that they are usually negatively bogus. Anyways I guess this is what's making it so difficult for them to verify accounts.
456  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My account request was rejected by MtGox - what should I do? on: June 24, 2011, 03:30:42 AM
Well, I ended up getting the dreaded rejection letter.  I just resubmitted with ip, account balance, dwolla account number, and dwolla to mtgox deposit history (date and time).  Hopefully all that, in addition to using the same email I use with my mtgox account, and confirming my 21 character mixed password will be enough to claim my bitcoins.

I only provided my home IP for the second time - guess I should have taken more time to go through all the accounting. Hopefully they give me a third try.

04 < Clipse> accept my apology
23:05 < imperi> MagicalTux: Do you know why my application was rejected? I gave lots of
                different information

23:05 < MagicalTux> graingert: tired, a bit, and busy, too
23:05 < imperi> MagicalTux: like how could it happen?
23:05 < MagicalTux> imperi: did you provide your last balance estimation?
23:05 < Artifex_> MagicalTux, so the market is going to open and i'm still not going to
have my account when it does? Undecided
23:05 < graingert> MagicalTux: me too
23:05 < imperi> MagicalTux: I did not
23:05 < go1dfish> MagicalTux: can you offer any more info as to why the external auditor
needed email/pw hash access at all?
23:05 < graingert> MagicalTux: wanna grab lunch sometime?
23:05 < Sykotic_> go1dfish, what time do you go to bed? Ill come back then so i don't
have to read your repeated crap
23:05 < Enochian> http://blockexplorer.com/rawtx/9173744691ac25f3cd94f35d4fc0e0a2b9d1ab17b4fe562acc07660552f95518
23:05 < MagicalTux> imperi: you should try, even if you are not 100% sure
23:05 < csshih> tux, set the room to +m >_>
23:05 < Enochian> That's one of the transactions containing the logo.

It seems that giving approximations of your balance is important. I'm glad he got back to me so soon... now I don't feel like I'll have an anxiety attack.
459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My account request was rejected by MtGox - what should I do? on: June 24, 2011, 02:47:40 AM
So lets see if I have this straight:

1) Everyone complains how easily MtGox got hacked.

2) Everyone is trying to claim their account back with least possible information possible.

Conclusion: Facepalm

My original password, email, and dwolla account number should be good enough, don't you think? I was at work when I submitted the request so I didn't have my home IP.
