301  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Killer App: Email paysite to reduce Spam on: July 10, 2011, 06:41:56 PM

This idea is so horrible that I can't tell if you're trolling or just not the brightest bulb in the room.

Then why don't you reason out why it's "so horrible" instead of just becoming the troll yourself?

Spam filters. Jesus christ you people are so stupid.
302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Killer App: Email paysite to reduce Spam on: July 10, 2011, 06:41:21 PM
It's actually a very good idea - and people forget that Bitcoin makes it possible because it permits payments of .00000001 btc.

I can certainly imagine that, if implemented effectively, senders of email would barely notice the cost and spammers would have a serious hurdle and risk.

Except that spam filters work perfectly well. It could have been a good idea in 2004.
303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Killer App: Email paysite to reduce Spam on: July 10, 2011, 06:40:20 PM
I have gmail. Perhaps we have different standards for what "highly effective" means.

Maybe you signed up on lots of websites that send you newsletters? Typically when you register for sites you can uncheck the box that says send me updates, newsletters, etc.
304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Killer App: Email paysite to reduce Spam on: July 10, 2011, 06:37:41 PM
Wow, I can't think of a more horrible idea.

You clearly lack imagination. I can think of at least a dozen more horrible ideas off the top of my head.

This idea is so horrible that I can't tell if you're trolling or just not the brightest bulb in the room.

Have you heard of a new, groundbreaking technology called spam filters?

Spammers don't seem to be too deterred, judging by the amount of spam I get.

That's your problem then if you haven't discovered a site called google.com which offers email service, including highly effective spam filters.

307  Economy / Economics / Re: If the bitcoin limit is reached. on: July 10, 2011, 07:15:42 AM
Let's see.  We'll be extremely close to the limit in 2033?  That's about 22 years from now.  I'd say the current price already reflects the speculation over future Bitcoin scarcity and adoption.  It wouldn't make any sense to invest in Bitcoin if you could get better guaranteed returns, so...  Let's say people wouldn't invest in Bitcoin if the expected returns are less than U.S. bond returns.  Investing in bonds would give you a ~3.5% return per year?  And the current price of Bitcoin is ~$14.50.

14.5*(1+0.035)^22 = ~$39

So, that's what I think the price of a Bitcoin will be in 2033, and it will keep growing at a rate of 3.5%/year after that.

Your equation doesn't work considering 14.5 was an extremely arbitrary choice in such a volatile market.
308  Economy / Economics / Re: POLL: How you're planning on using your bitcoins on: July 10, 2011, 07:06:12 AM
Honestly, I plan on saving all of my Bitcoins until they are at least 80% of my net worth. At that point I will start selling some of them. I am treating them like I would gold.

If there is a situation where it would be more convenient to use Bitcoins, then I might consider it.
309  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who is mining namecoins and why? on: July 10, 2011, 06:06:31 AM

Come to think of it, if the US government wanted to kill bitcoin today that'd be the way to do it.  Ask the NSA to switch their cracking lab to mining for a few hours over a weekend, rack the difficulty up to say 20-30 million and bitcoin is history.  The fact that it hasn't been done proves to me that the US gov't, at least, is utterly unconcerned with bitcoin.

I don't think the NSA has enough money for that or GPUs currently available. The difficulty can also only increase 4x per increment.

Since when was there a limit on the increase per difficulty adjustment? I thought it was proportional to the time allotted of 2 weeks, 6 blocks per hour...

Since it was put in the source code at the beginning of time?
310  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will never reach $5 again on: July 09, 2011, 02:50:06 PM
I just don't get why if everyone is so confident Bitcoin WILL reach $5 again demand is not so low?  The markets tell the story.  What people are actually doing is selling and buying.  Put your money where your mouth is!  At least I have done that by buying.
311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin will never reach $5 again on: July 09, 2011, 02:45:23 PM
This is why I have invested all my money in Bitcoins.  There is very little downside going backwards.  No backwards moves of late have any traction whatsoever and supply continues to lag.  Way too little downside for such a proposition to stay so my advice is to move more into Bitcoins.  Only a large change in the economy could alter this forecast.
312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoins dropped to $9.50, would you sell everything? on: July 09, 2011, 02:29:19 PM
Some people here believe the true value of Bitcoins is under $5, and if the inflationary wall at $10 could be breached then it would plummet further. Basically would you sell everything to save what little value you have left?
And how would you determine the 'true value'?

It would be based on economic activity not counting speculation (according to them).
313  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who is mining namecoins and why? on: July 09, 2011, 01:58:52 PM
I just like Namecoins and I can hit an icon on my desktop to mine them. I don't feel like mining Bitcoins and taking the trouble to exchange them, is that so bad? I could also work to make more money in USD and use that to buy Namecoins, but I'd rather just mine them.

Imperi, didn't you post a similar thread before? If you didn't why post a dupe thread, when it has been posted by another member before?

I didn't (edit: just checked my post history). And I don't keep track of every thread posted by other people.
315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Some issues with Bitcoins that could affect beginners on: July 09, 2011, 08:07:19 AM
I've been involved with Bitcoins for over a month now, and here is what I see as issues for beginners. These can all be fixed.

It's difficult to know how and where to buy Bitcoins. I would have probably bought them in early May if someone spelled it out. There's no place that just spells out "Sign up at Dwolla. Go here. Do this."

There is a general fear that you will enter the wrong address, or make some installation or configuration mistake that will erase all your coins.

It's difficult to know whether your Bitcoins are truly secure or not, regardless of how many precautions you take. Maybe it's just me, but I'm always checking my balance to see if someone managed to steal my coins. I am pretty sure that it's an irrational fear, like when you're on a rollercoaster and it feels dangerous but really isn't.

It's unclear that updating the client with a new version will not delete the current data.

There is a graph showing the number of coins estimated to be in circulation by year, where the number produced declines more and more. It's unclear that the value of the coins does not also follow this graph, to someone not really thinking about it.

The forums are quite childish in general and make this all seem like some sort of game, or something amateurish that is risky to put money into.

The client needs to clearly say when it is ready to process transactions. It's very confusing to people when only 10k blocks are downloaded and the money won't go through.

The Wiki for the businesses doesn't show the traffic to each one, or people's ratings of them. It's very hard to know which sites are good or not other than randomly guessing.

Sandra Shaw said she had the most frightening experience of her life when her daughter Réitseal Ni Dhonnchadha (5) swallowed a euro coin. But Mrs Shaw, from Athenry in Co Galway, knew what to do. She put Réitseal across her knees and tapped her 10 times between the shoulder blades. Those simple actions saved little Réitseal’s life. But how would the rest of us have fared in such a situation. We have compiled a guide to household health scares and what to do if you’re confronted with a life-threatening situation or a bad injury.

If Bitcoins were involved here, there would be no life-threatening situation. You can't choke on digital information. I think this is one feature of Bitcoins that people barely talk about, that they are safer.
317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoins dropped to $9.50, would you sell everything? on: July 09, 2011, 05:36:58 AM
Anything lower than 10, I buy buy buy...

But to confirm people's theories that Bitcoins should be in the lower single digits, this requires people to massively sell even more once it goes lower.

If it hits $11 I will sell everything since it confirms how lardycake and others were saying the value should be $5 or $6.

However, if it goes up to $17 I'll buy a bunch more since it means Bitcoins are on the upswing.

Looks like we're headed back down to JPMorgan parity. Not too bad.
