761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $80 Android Phone Sells Like Hotcakes in Kenya on: August 28, 2011, 04:06:13 PM
Quote
We’ve seen smartphones adopt all kinds of medical technology, from digital stethoscopes to cancer diagnosis, and I’m hopeful that we’ll see similarly stunning med-tech reach even the remotest areas one day.

I'm calling bullshit on this one...

WTF is an 80 dollar phone?  My phone cost me 0$..BUT you have to sign up for a 3 yr contract where you have to give up your first born to pay for it....and that's in CANADA!

What kind of contract do these unfortunate soles have to subscribe to to get their $80 phone?

This whole article is bullshit without the OP stating the 'total cost of ownership'.

Gawd shit like this makes me so mad....

Surely not BS. In kalifornia I got a decent smartphone for $125, maybe $150, no contract required, I bought minutes and data from some second rate provider cheap, can stop anytime and keep the phone. There should be a $50 smartphone already imo, $80 is far from unbelievable.

Yeah, the whole phone subsidy system is a rip off.  Take the Optimus S,  they show is as having a list price of $499, and then give the subsidy from this price.  If I was to upgrade to it they want me to pay $199, sign a two year contract and pay $10 more a month then I am for my old htc toucpro.   They also claim they are losing money on this.   However,  you can outright buy the same hardware as the Optimus V for $120.    A friend just got that and a $25 a month plan with unlimited data  and texting  last month.    For me at least the numbers and claims dont add up,  they just inflate the retail prices shown on the subsidized phones way too much and then use those funny numbers in their other math, making it all untrustworthy.   I picked those two as they are effectivly from the same company just under different bransds, you can also get the same phone hardware as the Optimus M for $99.  This phone works great as a voip phone on wifi, and is better then the htc hero, so it is not really junk even for $100.

Good to see this types  phones availability for outright purchase of $80 though, hopefully it won't be limited to Kenya.

Seems people in the USA can get an $80 phone after all, wonder if it is the same one ( http://www.metropcs.com/Shop/PhoneDetails.aspx?ProductId=HWM835(Phones) )

Are you really releasing binaries for linux without actually setting up a linux install to test them on first?

Being that it was said to be a known issue on some versions a linux, I think you already know the answer.

763  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 26, 2011, 09:28:08 PM
Any idea why when I solo mine, shares are accepted when there are no blocks found in the GUI client?
Note: solo mining on Windows 7

MY config consists of the following commands
rpcuser=user
rpcpass=pass
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1
server=1

I've tried forcing the config file by starting SolidCoin like this
Code:
SolidCoin.exe --conf=C:\Path\To\Config.conf
Starts up just fine I can connect fine shares are accepted from some reason when no blocks are found.... Sad

Still a lot of hash power for the difficulty ,  so probably getting a lot of orphans still.

(note: please do not take this post as more than a joke)
(note: I do not take solidcoin as more than a joke)
Well the joke may be on you then! Their network is exploding...

hee, the network exploding would not be a good thing, think you mean the trading is.

The network exploding IS a good thing... That means the miners are taking SolidCoin pretty seriously.

so far it seems to be holding up well and not exploded,  I for one hope it continues to hold up.

SolidCoin traded at a high of .49 BTC, just a few hours later it's worth .0014 BTC

Pretty much the same as I0coin and Ixcoin now.

Just waiting for the next "Cryto Currency of the Week"

You do know the .49 was a very tiny trade basically the first on the exchange to test it was working basically?
So this statement was nonsense even when it was made as far as trying to show a collapse in price.

Mac binary is up. Hope to have linux binaries with GUI this time! Hopefully not too much longer.

I have a linux binary built at http://www.wuala.com/jbw9/pub/Bitcoin/solidcoin/102b4/solidcoin-102b4-linux-i386.bz2/ for now.
768  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: August 25, 2011, 05:34:37 AM
That's with the block chain already deleted to start from scratch, actually.
Yes, you're right, I just tested. It looks like the i0coin network is dead. Perhaps the maintainer of the software can comment.

Just tried i0coin for fun after reading this.  I keep bouncing around between 3-5 connections and am sitting @ 14514 blocks
769  Economy / Economics / Re: FED should buy stocks instead of government bonds on: August 22, 2011, 10:25:54 PM
In this way, the stimulus money will have much better effect

I hope they even buy my used car for 1 billion$, because I can guarantee I will spend all those income, not like those big corporations sitting on tons of cash and doing cost cutting which bring down the total demand of the whole society  Angry

Stock ownership  is company ownership.   There is a name for they types of  governments that own businesses and it is not   supposed to be the system the US uses.   In fact I think allowing the government pensions to buy up voting stock already perverts this too much and should be banned  instead.   The whole bailout of GM and such was just insane the way it was done.
770  Economy / Goods / Re: Sh1337 is a scammer, beware! on: August 22, 2011, 06:26:22 PM
Sent you a PM, Maged.
*sigh*

Ladies and gentlemen, this whole thing was just a big misunderstanding, combined with a MtGox bug. What Sh1337 did was send the money to his own MtGox Bitcoin address, thinking that it was the address dalamchops sent from (he didn't see dalamchops' post until after he sent it), and it was removed from the account but never re-added.

Sh1337, contact MtGox and report this bug and ask that it be re-credited to your account. Once that is done, send the Bitcoins to the address dalamchops posted.

+1, that is  really putting in the extra mile as a mod to sort this for them.
771  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 22, 2011, 05:39:30 PM
Without any reference for the value of SolidCoin, I decided to value them at 1 USD. Since starting to accept SolidCoin yesterday, I've sold 4 Arimaa sets and 2 books. This was more than I was expecting, so maybe I've valued SC too high. Any suggestions on how to value a new currency when there is no exchange market to set the price.

CoinHunter, please add me to your bounty list of merchants accepting SolidCoin.

You probably have.  I know I am ready to buy a set at that price!  lol

I would price something to start with at 0.001 or so of a bitcoin probably.   Then you can see how it is trading on one of the *coin to bitcoin exchanges and then base your price off of the right percent of your btc price.

772  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BTC client crashes every 5 minutes. "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library." on: August 21, 2011, 11:16:24 PM
The official Bitcoin Windows binary isn't built with VC, but it does use the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime (msvcrt.dll).

What do you know. You're right! I just tested it with InspectExe and indeed msvcrt.dll is in the list of dependencies.

That is the C RTL not the C++ RTL, and indeed mingwin uses the msvcrt dll to avoid the need for gpled code at runtime.

Yes, it is C standard library specifically, but it is considered a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library (there is no Microsoft Visual C) and I'm guessing that is what the error message is referring to.

Hmm.. that library actually predates Visual C++ though,  would have thought they would have left it be, and not confused the matter with calling the the c++ library now.

Seems the  link to the patch now gives a 404 record so I can't look at it.  If I am understanding what is proposed here it seems a good idea.  However the above is not the right record type.  It should be using SRV records not A records,  this also lets the record specific the port number, so that need not be fixed.
775  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Conference 2011 NYC on: August 18, 2011, 04:54:09 PM
All,
  I'm proud to announce that the mobile conference app is now available.  You can access the app (iOS/Android Compatible) by going to: bitcon.mobi

So whether or not you're going, stay up to date with the latest goings on using the bitcon.mobi app.

Unless it's really good.

It does not seem to work for me.  opera mobile not supported and I need something else? What is the recommended browser?

776  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is IXcoin a bitcoin simulator? on: August 18, 2011, 04:34:25 PM
I just downloaded the ixcoin client out of sheer curiosity... without reading about what it was.

My impression after mining for less than a day is that it is a bitcoin simulator.  It simulates what it would have been like to be a bitcoin early adoptor, mining 40+ coins in less than a 24 hour period.

Only downside is there's no payout system!  But, it's there if you feel like day dreaming and wishing you could turn back time.

I do think it makes for a great test net, and to have seen and learned more about bitcoin that I had missed with the main client.   Not sure what you mean by no payout system though?    I made a lot more BTC mining IXC and selling them then I usually do from a month a mining btc directly already.
777  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: August 18, 2011, 04:27:37 PM

It was extremely funny and interesting to see and even take part in the birth of a block chain. I guess any new fork will have even less success unless it adds something really new.

Watching these alternative chains launch has helped me to learn a lot about bitcoin.  They also make great 'test' nets in some ways.
778  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Please remove Bitcoin from Sourceforge.net on: August 18, 2011, 04:06:03 PM
I don't really get it, how can I possibly protect others when the binaries I serve can potentially be malicious and I can potentially have malicious intentions ?

Should I post checksums ? Doesn't work :
 - if I have malicious intentions the checksums will match the malicious binaries.
 - if the binaries get changed without me knowing it means that the server got compromised, the checksums shouldn't then be trusted either
 - if I post a link to SF, that won't help since some users won't be able to access it and it also could be compromised

Let's face it, if you're truly paranoid, you read the source and then you compile it. Oh wait, you'd need to compile gcc too Wink

If you have better ideas than the couple I exposed I'm open. But I'd rather give no checksums than a false sense of security.

Actually I do compile gcc, but not for security reasons, lol.

And you are right about it being better to provide no checkfiles then provide a false sense of security.

What you could do is also mirror http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/bitcoin-0.3.24/SHA1SUMS.asc/download and provide a link  to http://bitcoin.org/jgarzik-exmulti.asc which an earlier post said is the right signature to verify.  Now you have not only provided a way to check your mirrored files, but that no one has changed the sf ones since you mirrored them.
779  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Please remove Bitcoin from Sourceforge.net on: August 18, 2011, 03:09:55 PM
May want to add a link to the verification file and the signature to use to verify it.
No. I trust myself. If you don't, feel free to check the binaries MD5/SHA Smiley

It is not to protect you.  It is to protect anyone using your download mirror.   Also would help detect if someone changed it on you later etc....   how would someone who cant get to sf check your mirror?
It also would allow someone to double check that the sf binaries were not changed after you fetched them.  Has zero to do with if you trust yourself.    Would just make your mirroring service have a lot more useful by adding a link and a mirror of another small file.     Odd you are so quick to say no.
780  Economy / Services / Re: Web Development and Programming for Cheap! on: August 18, 2011, 01:51:33 PM
My friend wanted me to post on the forums letting you all know that he's offering cheap rates to develop anything your
heart desires. He accepts payment in Bitcoin. His site is here: http://marktraceur.info/traceur_techies.html

Would probably get better responses if the link was not just a 404.
