I don't have a problem with what they're adding or how they're doing it. But they should be doing it as a company not a decentralized currency.

I like it done as a decentralized currency, as all the current Vericoin users are able to vote with their wallets on what fork they are able to use (as stated in previous posts, other coins have forked as well).  It comes down to then what fork the miners and exchanges wish to use (which P2Pool and decentralized exchanges *should* be the way, people have voted with their wallets to continue to use Mining Pools and centralized exchanges).   People who are Vericoin users are choosing to upgrade rather than allow the coin to fail, the developers did not force this on any person, people can choose to stay on the stolen coin blockchain, things are still decentralized by that definition.

Education. After seeing scam after scam and then identifying the crutch in almost everyone of those scams, it came down to trust.

seriously read through bitcointalk.org there's 1000s of scam threads in which you have people proclaiming trust in the devs.

You're not supposed to have to trust the devs.

I don't believe education is your reason for posting at all.  See my join date, I've read through many scams and been through many different coins.   Hell, I did own "SolidCoin" which I believe was the second alt coin after Litecoin, or one of the earliest, which I never paid for any SolidCoin, always got it for free.  I believe that was a scam in the end, but it was a matter of picking and choosing battles and seeing where things go.

I am not saying your way of thinking is wrong for yourself, just your way of thinking does not have to be right for every person or every coin.   Believe me when I say I prefer open source as a general rule, it just makes sense imo, and I hope some features of Vericoin are able to change protocol to be open source.   For now though, the transparency and interaction from the developers is enough for me to see where this coin is going.

People in this thread and all the other Vericoin communities (Vericoin reddit, Twitter, Veritalk forums) are very aware they are putting a lot of trust in the developers and that many of the key features that separate Vericoin from other coins rely on these devs.   You're not supposed to have to trust the devs, but people can if they want and there is no need to be negative about people having choice :/   (btw, I mean that from the Vericoin users that attack back as well, bullshit posts can stop and be discussed better from haters and lovers of the coin)

It's supposed to be open-source, distributed not closed source and under their care. I don't get how more people arent calling this crap out.

Where is this rule that every digital currency must be open source?    I know I personally prefer things open source as a general rule, however that doesn't mean every person or entity by default is not trustworthy, pick and choose your battles.  With what the devs have done with this rollback has given me a lot more faith and trust in them.   I don't understand your negativity with your multiple posts through this thread because people think differently than you :/

If you look at the history chart for VRC's staking power network-wide, there was a massive drop off of millions in weight when the hack is claimed to have happened. They didn't stake, my ass. Also, the coins were wild out of Mintpal's control for over 10 hours, exchanges were not frozen - yet they sat at the same two withdrawal addresses and did not move at all, and the fork was done the next day. What hacker do you know that wouldn't sell a single coin after stealing it? Mintpal is full of shit. This all looks much more like they lost the coins somehow, perhaps by transferring to an inaccessible address, or overwriting files they shouldn'tve - something. If they lost $2 mil USD, they were facing UK prison - so they tell the VRC devs they got hacked, Nosker is pressured to save his network against the possibility of a single majority-staker, and the userbase for both VRC and Mintpal get to scratch their heads over what the real story is behind all the shadows and bullshit.

One thing is for sure, Mintpal failed due to negligence and/or incompetence, and they're being less than honest about the details of the issue and how they operate their business. Nosker's hand was a bit forced to save his coin, considering the circumstances - but one can't help but wonder what he knew. His argument about throwing up massive sell walls on the exchanges to "help investors" doesn't make much sense to me. Wouldn't he want BTC walls to prevent the price crashing? Seems odd. Anyway, fuck Mintpal, and shame VRC got dragged into it.

Interesting theories.  I agree about the coins not being moved after being stolen is fishy as all hell.

Why da fuq did Mintpal hold 8mil Vericion's($2mil) in a hot wallet. I want a good explanation.

“We did have cold storage setup for VRC, however in this instance, due to an error for which only we can be accountable, we had transferred far fewer coins than was required, resulting in a large proportion of coins being left in the hot wallet.”

While I do not see this as a "good" explanation, it is their explanation.    I sadly see it as a way they were earning interest off of other peoples coins, but who knows.

"PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING PAYPAL AS PAYMENT.
Due to persistent scammers using PayPal chargebacks, we have decided to stop accepting PayPal. This is a shame for all those genuine customers who benefitted from the speed and efficiency of PayPal.
WE NOW ONLY ACCEPT BITCOIN OR LITECOIN AS PAYMENT"

Sad times for Litecoinfever, they have disabled being able to buy coins with Paypal.  However they are still open and anyone can buy Vericoin directly with Bitcoin or Litecoin.

Anyways, just posting this as an alternate way for people to buy coins http://litecoinfever.com/

If you check their twitter feed, they offer deals through the day that last 30min/hour, so it's worth checking it https://twitter.com/LitecoinFever

I do not own any VRC.

But this was a mature, correct response by an Elite Dev Team...
To a massive security breach affecting 30% of coins outstanding.

ONLY a coin that will be defended and managed like in this case...
Can possibly gain mainstream acceptance by serious merchants.

I'll bet smoothie's big bag of coins has part-time devs that specialize in excuses.

That said... WHY THE FUCK WAS 30% OF VRC IN A MINTPAL HOT WALLET???

The whole problem of exchanges "owning" Customer coins needs to be changed...
There needs to be a protocol change = coins on exchange remain linked to Customer wallet...
There needs to be a NEW special class of "transfer"...
Your wallet would have an extra line that says "on exchange and segregated".

I could see having the choice to link your wallet to an exchange being something interesting to look into.

I think at the least this might eliminate a bunch of people who day trade rather than who are actually supporters of Vericoin.

Good point about the merchants, though I don't see a rollback being an option or necessary in the future, the fact that the devs are out there and didn't just let this issue go and say 'fuck it, let the thief destroy our coin' says a lot, surprised people see it otherwise.

Mintpal though, such shame.

*currently waiting for Bittrix to enable VRC wallets so I can stake the coins I'm buying up*

Can someone help this user on /r/Vericoin out

---

Got another strange behaviour.
When I start my OSX Wallet (ver. v1.3.3.0-g32a928e) it syncs up and everything's fine. Then I unlock it to start Staking, which eventually starts as well. After a few minutes, though, it begins to fall out of syn.
I checked the debug log, and it looks like it's getting a bunch of errors. Old wallets maybe? Here's a chunk of the log: https://gist.github.com/miles/75e6a44c40762571e878

Hi Everyone, fork is complete with new update today 1.3.3!

Go here to download the new wallet: www.vericoin.info

Backup your wallet.dat first before proceeding, it's location is listed below for your system.

Windows:
We recommend deleting everything but wallet.dat in your username\appdata\roaming\VeriCoin folder and running the default installer settings.  This will load up the full block and you will be on the splash screen for 30-60 minutes while it loads at the blockchain data.

Mac:
We recommend deleting everything but wallet.dat from user/library/applicationsupport/vericoin and putting these two files in this directory as well: http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/vericoin.conf http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/bootstrap.dat
You will sit at the splash screen for 30-60 minutes while the whole blockchain loads up.

Thanks for these updates.   Despite having to wade through all the FUD going on, it'll pass, Vericoin will be fine and stronger for this, all the people who have been using the coin just got a lot more faith in you guys imo, including me.

People who don't like what has been done here can continue to not use the coin or they can stay on the old fork with the thief, no one is forcing anyone to upgrade or change anything.

MintPal Exchange Suffers VeriCoin Hack
July 14, 2014

On Sunday, June 13, 2014, the popular cryptocurrency exchange MintPal made an announcement revealing that they had been the victim of an attack which targeted the exchange's VeriCoin wallets [1]. While the amount stolen was not disclosed, MintPal did confirm in the post that they lost "a considerable amount of VeriCoin in the attack". Some rumors suggest that the exchange may have lost roughly 8 million VeriCoin -- or $1,900,000 USD at current market price. While this amount has not yet been verified by MintPal officials, recent transactions on the VeriCoin blockchain confirm that two large transfers in the amount of 5 million and 3 million VRC had taken place [2] [3]. As evidenced by the blockchain, the stolen coins do not appear to have been sold on any exchange.

Community Response
Upon disclosure of this information, MintPal and competing exchanges were quick to suspend trading of VeriCoin. According to the announcement, the exchange plans on pursuing a hard fork which would essentially rollback VeriCoin's blockchain to a position before the attack. This decision would render the stolen coins worthless and restore user’s balances. This news comes as a surprise to many because hard forks are generally considered to be extremely disruptive procedures reserved only for flaws with the core protocol -- not mistakes made by a third party exchange.

Some speculators have raised the point that the decision to roll back a coin at the request of a private corporation undermines the very nature of decentralized cryptocurrencies. While true, it should be noted that this decision can also be largely attributed to the fact that VeriCoin is a Proof-of-Stake coin. A stakeholder with access to 8 million coins (roughly 30% of the total coin count) could compromise the network by executing the nefarious 51% attack (or 30% in this case) [4]. Regardless of the rationale, the decision to hard fork the coin undoubtedly appears to be necessary and the VeriCoin developers seem to agree [5].

Whats Next
It remains to be seen what kind of effect this news will have on VeriCoin's price once markets are re-enabled. While this news certainly calls MintPal's security procedures into question, the VeriCoin community and developers have generally been receptive to the idea of a hard fork and have since successfully forked the coin. It is unclear whether or not MintPal will be reversing any trades prior to the announcement.

The hardfork is done and the wallets are available for download.

Here's the step-by-step on how to do the update.

1. Do the backup of the wallet.dat and vericoin.conf (if you have this file)
2. Delete all files in folder leaving only the two files mention above.
3. Download the bootstrap file from: http://vericoin.info/downloads/bootstrap.dat and put it together in the folder with the other 2 files.
4. Download the wallet from http://vericoin.info
5. Install the wallet
6. Run the wallet and wait for synchronization

-- If you don't have the vericoin.conf file you can make one using this:
irc=0
server=0
listen=1
checklevel=2
txindex=1
staking=1
connect=supernode.vericoin.info
connect=supernode2.vericoin.info
connect=supernode3.vericoin.info
connect=supernode4.vericoin.info
connect=supernode5.vericoin.info

Bump

cant sync my wallet?

My wallet (OSX) is not syncing either..just to let you guys know..

It should be known that first time opening the program it may take a long ass time to load, I suggest even maybe taking a nap as it gets everything in order.   At least that is what I am noticing.

CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE SOLVE THIS PROBLEM ?

I've been there.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=602041.msg7539485#msg7539485

What I did, as per advice of others here.  Take that wallet.dat file  ( C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\VeriCoin
 ) , make a copy of it, put it on your desktop, whatever.

Uninstall, delete any instance of the old vericoin program on your computer (including the folder that had your wallet.dat)

Reinstall the program.   Before starting the program fresh, put the copy of your wallet.dat from your desktop in that  ( C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\VeriCoin
 ) folder (keep a copy on your desktop just in case).

Allow the program to start and resync.

This worked for me, I guarantee no results, but I had the exact same error message as you when switching my hard drive to another computer, not sure what caused your issue.

Good luck.
