1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Newbie in C++ wants deep learning on BTC and Alts on: June 02, 2017, 02:05:03 AM
Read the technical documentation and read the source code of Bitcoin Core.

A good start.

If you want to learn it properly, implement your own coin and network - from scratch.
2  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining as a business?? on: May 10, 2017, 03:50:28 PM
1. No, For true cooling costs it will be around 50% and that is for CRAC units that are specifically designed to maintain temperature and humidity for data centers. Sure you can set up some fans and try to cool with ambient temperature but I don't think this is sustainable for long term growth of the mine. (This of course depends on if you live in Iceland or Canada)

There's no reason to use mechanical cooling for something that can be throttled by error rate and be radically cheaper to cool with ambient air exchange.  Just filter the incoming air.

Idaho, as of Feb 2017, is literally one of the cheapest states in the entire country in regards to commercial electricity rates. I simply was talking generally about a state but yes if there is a hydroelectric dam then the rates could be around .03-.05 per kwh. The thing I found funny and surprising was Virginia is very cheap for commercial electricity rates.

State level granularity doesn't cover the nuance needed.  Idaho, as a state, has cheap power.

Several counties in central Washington have the cheapest power in the nation.  Washington State, as a whole, has expensive power over in the Seattle metro area.

And if you're serious about a mining business, you already know what those counties are. Wink

There are several important questions to ask at this point in time, for this question:

1. Are you a chip foundry, or do you have close ties to a chip foundry such that you can get ASICs at ~fabrication cost?  And do you have access to smart people who can design a more efficient SHA256 engine?  The first is much more important than the second.

2. Do you have access to megawatts of power at industrial pricing?  You're a perfect customer for megawatts of power - you have a totally constant demand, and can sign up for all the load shifting/peak shaving programs, as long as they're more profitable than your hardware, because there is literally no harm in reducing power consumption on demand.

3. Do you have access to some way of dumping a few megawatts of heat without paying anything (or pretty close) for cooling?  Ambient air exchange in a cold area with cheap power is probably the best option, though the throttling of ASICs in hotter temperatures (100+C ambient) is probably cheaper than paying cooling for that hardware.

If you can safely answer "Yes" to all 3, absolutely.  Go at it.  But you wouldn't be asking here.

If not?  Well, good luck.  You probably won't make money, but the tax writeoffs from the losses could be useful.
4  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB UK] asics cube and other asics on: March 07, 2014, 08:11:40 PM
I have several ASICMiner Cubes in the US I would be willing to ship, if you're interested.
5  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: February 05, 2014, 06:37:21 PM
You have two cubes on the AX1200i that remain running perfectly, correct?

Swap the other two cubes with the ones on the AZ1200i.  If the ones on the 1200W PSU stay happy, it's PSU issues.  If not, it's cube issues.
6  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: February 04, 2014, 08:41:10 PM
IS it true these can only be setup on a 192.168.1.0/24 subnet which is non configurable?  Will it not pick up DHCP off a different type of subnet such as 10.0.1.0/24?

It has no built in DHCP client, so, no, it won't "pick up DHCP."  They are static IPs only.

Set a static IP on your desktop/laptop to configure them if you have to.  Though the default setting being a common router IP is a bit silly IMO.

Your PCI extender cables are probably shit.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Dual PSU for 3x and 4x GPUs on: January 22, 2014, 12:26:18 AM
Get someone to ship you some good single PSUs from the USA?  I'm happy to do it, if you're interested.

I run quad GPU rigs on the Lepa 1600W PSUs with no trouble at all.
9  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: January 20, 2014, 04:24:49 PM
I've been quite happy with the Lepa G1200 (and, presumably, the G1600) for powering my cubes.  The G1200 runs 3 with no trouble at all, no issues with startup surge, and I'm quite confident it would run another one or two cubes as well.  They're expensive PSUs, but JonnyGuru approved, and quite efficient (peaking over 90% efficiency at about a half load, which is part of why I have such a large one).
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: January 18, 2014, 06:04:39 AM
You only have 325W on the +12v rails combined.  It should be OK if you're using both on low clocks (around 200W), but I wouldn't try high clocks (280W+) on that PSU.
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: January 17, 2014, 10:11:46 PM
Is it normal for the fuse to be warm to the touch on high clock?  I have 2 cubes, one doesn't like high clock, the other one seems ok but the fuse is warm to the touch.  I have only had it on high clock for 4 or 5 hours now after running on low for a couple days, but I don't know if I should leave it on high or not.

It pulls more power through the fuse on high, so, yes, I'd expect it to be a bit warm to the touch.

Not overly hot, but if it's slightly warm, it's not a problem.
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: January 16, 2014, 03:53:55 PM
I've replaced all my fans with some spare 120mm fans I had laying around that pull ~0.3A and move a good bit more air than the stock ones.  I have some better ones on order as well.

Has anyone had luck adding heatsinks to the front side of the chips as well for cooling?  I don't know if it will make a big difference or not, but as two of my Cubes will not run reliably in the high clock setting, I figured it would be worth playing with.
13  Economy / Goods / WTB: A bad ASICMiner Block Erupter Cube compute board or two on: January 15, 2014, 05:00:18 AM
I'm looking to pick up a few bad boards for Cubes.  They don't have to work, just need the heatsink and to be in good physical shape.

Not offering much, as they're not really worth much.  Shipping to the USA.
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: January 15, 2014, 12:42:52 AM
if anyone has fixed the random restarting please tell me I will pay a donation I have 3 restarting cubes and I have reasembled them all with no fix please help

I have also seen reports that a failing fan (not drawing enough power, I suppose) will cause random restarts - it's worth trying if you're out of other ideas.
15  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What's after 3TH machines. What's the timeframe? on: January 14, 2014, 04:02:50 PM
2500W!!! 3 Phase electricity right there

Cute. Smiley  Doesn't even run one proper server flat out.

Now, if you're talking about 2500A of 480v, then we can talk.
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Dual R9 280X frequent BSOD on: January 13, 2014, 10:15:53 PM
This rig seems to be experiencing a BSOD on Windows 7 every 4-5 hours.
It does not appear to be overheating in any of the components.
It's on a Gigabyte motherboard with a 750W Gold PSU.

Does anybody have any specific tips for dual 280x that seemed to be causing BSOD?

What mainboard/CPU combination are you using?  Two GPUs plus a CPU may be taxing the limits of your power supply, depending on how honest the rating is and what the +12v rails can provide.  Measure the voltage on your +12v rail while hashing and see if you're suffering from sagging voltage at the cards.
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to keep 4x 6970 cool on: January 13, 2014, 10:11:24 PM
They should be fine.  Make sure you have good airflow in the proximity of the intakes and they'll stay cool.  Even the boxy cards are pretty good at sucking air.  You probably want to run the GPU fans at 80% or so.

If you're an open air setup, PCI-E slots have a good bit of "flex" built into their spec.  You can put a 5mm spacer between the cards to increase airflow to their fans without affecting the electrical connection and open up space for them to breathe.

I would suggest against using risers unless required, as they can cause reliability issues.  The're a possible solution, but I strongly discourage their use.  Try without them first.

18  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What's after 3TH machines. What's the timeframe? on: January 09, 2014, 10:42:38 PM
You still can't power 2500W on a standard home circuit in the USA.  Most homes have 110v wiring, at 15A or 20A.  That puts a reasonable max of 1500W per circuit, and even that's pushing it pretty hard for a lot of homes.  You basically require 240v for a 2500W system.  Many people in the US don't have access to that, or only have that wired for the laundry room and kitchen.
