If you believe ASICs will hit the market soon then purchasing FPGAs is a bad business decision. Otherwise FPGAs are an optimal solution in this current market although the FPGAs you have selected are very expensive per MH/s. For the volume that you are considering you should be able to work a bulk deal for quad FPGA boards and get much better FPGA pricing.

In the end there is too much uncertainty in the mining market right now to make a move like this. Wait 2-3 months to see how these ASIC announcements play out.

I'd be interesting in a one or two hundred BTC slot in Kraken 2 if it becomes a reality and the returns of Kraken The Original are decent.

I'm going to assume you are in the United States.

If you have a garage and some spare monthly income for parts then the S14 is a great option. You should be able to pick up a decent one(they are all going to be beat to hell) for a few thousand dollars. Then you'll proceed to strip it down and rebuild it with fresh parts. The SR-20 motor swap, rear axle/LSD swap out of the J30, and the 300ZX TT brake swap are just a few of the things you'll want to do.

In the end the S14 is a cheap econobox with a ton of performance parts swapped in to it. It is going to creak. It is going to rattle. However, if treated properly it is going to be stupid fast. Depending where you live there might still be an active 240sx tuning community. It is definitely a dying platform though as the few remaining 240s are wrapped around poles and slammed in to walls.

The Mazda Miata is similar to the S14 with a huge community and a gigantic parts list available. Don't let the stigma of it being a "girly" car fool you. Mazda has put a ton of research in to making it one of the best handling cars on the planet. All it needs is 200-250whp and it's a go-kart.
Yeah I'm eventually planning on putting some decent money into whichever car since most will at least need some tlc. You speaking from experience of owning one?

I completely acknowledge the efficiency of Miatas, I'm just one of those people that can't get over the look heheh.

I never personally owned a S13/S14. I did help wrench on a few and saw the troubles associated with a budget platform being stressed to its limits. They're fun cars but they'll piss you off right quick initially. All the issues that can crop up in the SR20 swap alone could turn you off from the platform.

I am excited for the recently released Subaru BR-Z.  I think it has the potential to become a very popular modder and with huge part availability.  Although, brand new it is about double what you were trying to stay under.  I am betting Subaru releases a STI version next year also.

I'm eagerly watching to possibly buy a little brother for my STI but all the rumors are saying the BRZ STI will just have upgraded suspension and a retune. Then again there is the new turbo 2.0L from the jdm Legacy GT that Subaru is putting out.. maybe that will make its way in to the BRZ. All else fails I'm sure in a few months we'll have some EJ257 swaps in to the BRZ making stupid power. Or I suppose a frankenmotor using the stock FA20.

Undervolt and run them in to the ground. All my 5970s run at 1.00v @ 740 MHz and I just let them run. Lower vddc keeps the vrm temps happy and the core temps happy. Just let them run happy and you'll achieve incredibly uptimes. High uptime is the key to succeeding as a miner.

Currently running 10 HD 5970s like this and they don't get me any gruff. Now, my HD 6870x2 rig is a pain in my ass and I'm about ready to take it out back and pump it full of .223.

Toyota MR2 ? or is that just another supra ? Iono

That's be an incredible MR2 given how they were powered by ~2 liter I-4s. Wikipedia does mention a conversion kit to convert it to a TRD2000GT with ~490HP. That'd be a bit nuts and I imagine the dyno chart looks like a a damn hockey stick.
367  Economy / Lending / Re: Help me buy a car, earn double it's value on: August 09, 2012, 11:47:58 PM
Yeah, people that drive fast cars slow don't make sense to me.  Unless you are low on gas or trying to save mileage at the time, the only reason you wouldn't drive fast is because fear of a ticket or accident, and doubt of your own ability to drive.

The leather on the stearing wheel started tearing and is getting bigger.

OMG.  Once the steering wheel leather tears a car is done for!!
It's not the same experience and it's totally irrelevant to the fact I want and would pay this for a new car.

I really don't care if this loan isn't fulfilled, I will have to go with my delayed gratification. But that's no reason not to try if I want it.

lol.. you're funny man. I drive right around the speed limit 99% of the time and I have a "fast" car. It isn't that I doubt my own driving ability, it is that I doubt everyone elses driving ability. That doesn't mean I won't take a drive out to a deserted part of Colorado and have some fun. I just don't do it in a city like all the idiots that rev at me while sitting at a stoplight.

Does Patrick have a BPU+ Supra?

Yeah, thinking he's got a Supra as otherwise Toyota doesn't really sell much that is worth tuning. Well, unless you consider the Lexus SC series, which is basically a Supra. Hrm, and maybe a supercharged truck although he said track and not off roading.

edit: this has been a most hilarious thread. Vampire and yjacket duking it out like professional armchair race car drivers, dank continuing to be dank and the world going on past it all. Good times on btctalk.

He said STI, go look up what most of them have.

Oh yea? That was a trick question, in US there were no STI models in 2003.

Whoops.

What was a trick question? I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. no one mentioned 2003 except for you.

a) you came to the thread and called me a moron
b) i've proven that you're a moron and clueless about cars

a) I called you a retard because you completely missed what the guy was saying. He said his "STI can blow the doors off most V8 mustangs. This is completely accurate. A stock STI will blow away any pre 2012 stock V8 mustang. You basically pulled a Dwight and said False.

b) Show your work. I don't know why you would bring up the horsepower numbers of a WRX when we are talking about a WRX STi. All i did was tell you that we were talking about an STi, not a plain WRXs. Again, you tried to pull a Dwight about how there were no U.S. 2003 WRX STis. I never asserted that there were.

I don't own an STI and never have. I have a 2003 BMW 325xi, it's not fast. I'll probably get a Honda next.

I don't even care about mustang v. STi. However, if I had to choose, I would choose an STi over a 2012 stang. As others have said, it has a much easier upgrade path to some serious power, and being AWD, it can actually put that power down. In addition, its suspension is much better. The mustang is probably better with ladies.

I don't care if you think you know more about cars than me, it's not a concern of mine. I'm sorry if I offended you, it was not my intent.

I can confirm this. Ladies are all "what is that big wing for? Why does it have that big hump on the hood? Why does it make so many weird noises? Why is the backseat so uncomfortable? Why is the front seat so uncomfortable? Why isn't it automatic?"

Well, most dudes are the same way.. can't fault the ladies for judging an ugly car  Cheesy The loud pedal is very fun though.

In the end you two are bitching about comparable cars in similar price brackets with vastly different upgrade paths. This is like comparing an equal sized apple and an orange. Fuck it, they are both delicious in different ways. If all you do is keep the cars stock and race them in a straight line or around a track it doesn't matter as they are practically the same.

It only matters which car is which when you spend some time wrenching on the cars and fixing issues the manufacture created in order to satisfy the masses. Back seat? Don't need that. Soft suspension? Get that crap out of here. Quiet, limiting exhaust? Toss that too. Bitch less, enjoy driving more.

Subaru Imprezza WRX Sti, 4 cylinder turbo, 300+ HP stock, Will blow the doors off of most V8 mustangs no problem.....

V6 stock mustang is 300+
V8 stock mustang is 400+

Are you retarded?

You are for sure.

2012 Ford Mustang V6 - 305HP
2012 Ford Mustang V8 - 412HP

Right, and every single mustang is a 2012. He's clearly talking about the older ones.

And every single WRX is 2012. LOL.

2003 WRX is 220HP.
2003 V8 is 260HP

He said STI, go look up what most of them have.

STi has been ~250whp since it's launch in 2004.

I don't care about crank horses. Crank horses aren't real horses, we don't drive engine blocks through the corners and straights on a track.

Right, and every single mustang is a 2012. He's clearly talking about the older ones.

Even so the 2012 Mustang is an equal match for a stock WRX STi. Zero traction control issues versus a wasted 1st gear on the mustang. Might as well launch in second on the Mustang.

$3-4k in parts and the STi is around ~350awhp and wrecks the Mustang. $3-4k in parts on the Mustang and it's still roughly the same.

Source: 04 STi owner.

Come back when we're talking about a GT500. Brute power makes up for the traction misgivings of the platform.

Interesting information. Looking forward to the more optimized numbers. I'm sure you guys have thought of this before but, if you haven't, once you guys have a commodity chip you may want to chat with Enterpoint. They've shown interest in Bitcoin, appear to be working quite hard on their product, and their first hardware design was impressive given how little time it took to release. Sell the chips in bulk reels, provide the pinout and let Enterpoint create the PCB, VRM and controlling FPGA to handle a couple of these chips per board. Could be a great partnership and dramatically accelerate the time to market of such a product.

In the end I'm fairly certain you'll recover your costs faster by selling your chips than by mining them yourselves. Especially if you believe that BFL and Largecoin will deliver sometime in 2013.
373  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best demonstrated efficiency: 71 Mhash/Joule on: July 28, 2012, 10:28:28 PM
Power doesn't usually turn out ideally on these die shrinks though. Otherwise instead of Atom cpus Intel would have a sub Watt Pentium 3 1GHz die at 32nm.

I love when I get to dust off the cobwebs..

Pentium M was the mobile processor that all current out-of-order Intel desktop/server chips are based off of. Pentium M was a Pentium 3 core with some spruced up I/O. Pentium M led to Core Duo(yonah), which were holywtf awesome at the time, which then lead to Core 2 Duo(conroe) which then lead to the 45nm shrink(penryn). That then lead to the architecture improvement that was nehalem, which lead to the 32nm shrink that was westmere(with the awkward clarkdale phase), which lead to the architecture improvement that was sandybridge, and then the 22nm shrink that is ivy bridge.

If Intel wanted, they could sell a sub-watt single core Ivy Bridge chip. But instead they chose to butcher their core, remove the out of order components, and trick the market in to needing a second core that costs them next to nothing to manufacture. You have to give them credit as they effectively established a tablet-like market with the netbooks based off early Atom processors.
374  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: So, did I miss the bus? on: July 25, 2012, 07:05:38 PM
Just echoing everyone else. I'm gambling on GPUs being viable for the next ~6 months. I'm not buying up anymore GPUs(sitting around 17 GH/s) but I'm definitely not selling them either. With the reward drop I'll re-evaluate and either liquidate on eBay for dirt cheap or mine them in to the ground if they are still profitable in 2013.

If you are willing to take the risk, you may also want to look in to a pirate passthrough. I have a pirate account with a small deposit. The interest off that deposit pays for the power and rent of my second mining facility. Power isn't a huge issue at 1-2 GH/s but it does add up and it's nice having coins that I mined pay off the powerbill.

In the end it's a fun hobby. If you gamble with things you don't mind losing then you can laugh it off if the cardhouse falls down.

I believe some people have switched over to litecoin mining. I myself will have to find something profitable to do with all these GPUs if the difficulty makes them unprofitable.
377  Economy / Speculation / Re: #bitcoin IRC log: A pirate leads a flock of sheep over a cliff. on: July 17, 2012, 05:58:57 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if he did this to make us all think that he is "always" in control of the market. If he succeeds in getting people to think that then he can get you to buy and sell when he wants.

People don't be stupid. The market is much much bigger than pirate himself and his massive ego.

Keep in mind the market is also larger than the #bitcoin IRC channel. Maybe it was Pirate pumping and dumping the exchanges. Maybe it was someone out having a bit of fun. Regardless, it doesn't matter who it was due to the vast majority of the market having no care who Pirate is.
378  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Solar Flare on: July 15, 2012, 11:42:19 PM
Solar flares should be the least of our concerns. We're shielded pretty well by the Earth's magnetic field. From what I've read solar flares only cause issues with systems that operate outside of the magnetic field(satellites) and very large circuits(power distribution lines). Wikipedia has a decent article on the phenomena -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_storm#Disrupted_systems. Digging through their cited articles is also an interesting read, if you are in to such things.

tl;dr - go out and watch the auroras as the Sun smacks Earth around a bit.

Lesson of the day

Always ship ammo via UPS or FedEX

Because USPS will send a nasty gram to you and take your ammo

Thought i could save a few $$ and i lost $$$  Cry

Err. USPS clerks always ask "does this box contain anything fragile, flammable or hazardous?". They ask that for a reason.. USPS won't ship anything that blows up which is why you ship ammo, primers and powders via USPS/Fedex. Lesson learned I suppose.
