So are these guys a scam?
I'm wanting to invest big money here.
No , they are NOT scam, but have BIG delays.

Today my L3 miner finally started to mine there  Wink   2 month delay means $600 loss.   Sad But I am not completely upset. Smiley

Anyone know how much money are the  L3's producing per day?

Well @ launch suprnova doesnt seem to be working for me..

In the IT world that's known as the "thundering herd." In this case all pools are being slammed with miners trying to be the first to strike it big in BTG.

It may take a while for the pools to be able to handle all the miners. Be patient...
164  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: November 12, 2017, 06:41:49 PM
Was this due to the allegedly unluckiness of the software? I remember some of that conversation on another thread (which will remain unnamed)...

I was wondering why until I saw this post by Antpool in Twitter...

So my 1.72 PH is getting best of both worlds - BTC/BCH profit auto-switching? Can something verify this if true?

I know ViaBTC does this.... but Antpool doing this behind everyone's back is unethical.... but should I care? because I am still paid in BTC!
..

Bitmain doesn't care where the hash rate goes as long as people keep buying their mining hardware and point it at their pool(s). If I recall, Bitmain's own pool(s) are PPS and they do not share any of the transaction fees in the mined blocks with the miners, correct?

Yeah... the S9s were at that unnamed pool ... Juvia and her minions got over 20 blocks there Grin ... BUT he claimed that the S9s seems to be bring "bad luck" to the pool... so with a heavy heart I pulled out 108 x S9s mining there back to the mothership. Over time, all my Avalons A721s, A741s moved out too and spread across f2pool, viaBTC (BTC/BCH profit-switching) and Antpool.

I remember the Juvia blocks (and knew the Juvia reference before you explained it...  Grin ) , and wondered where you'd disappeared to. I had tried to mine there, but had issues, so my miners have floated around a bit. They were mining on ck's latest pool (see my sig) to help sort it out, but I just moved them to ViaBTC to try that out for a while.

I was mining with them at ck's new pool. I think he's got a good payout idea/plan in his new pool software, but he doesn't have enough hash rate to find blocks in a reasonable amount of time, so the pool hash rate jumps up and down, usually between 500 TH and 1.5 PH as miners come and go. Luckily I was there and fully vested, so to speak, when the pool found it's only block to date.

In the past, I believed in the support for decentralization but I soon realized that I am a tiny fish in the big pond and what I should be really need to do was bring focus in making money, ROI the investment, think like Phil's signature about BTC and Alts.... and still be a part of the new economy - be it BTC or BCH or BTG etc...

I'm with Phil on that PHILosophy, too. BTC is great, but I made my stake in LTC. It's funded my other stakes, miners, and now WTT tokens so I can host miners at a place with cheap electricity. My next miner upgrade is to buy two 1070Ti cards (one EVGA hybrid that Phil recommends/uses, and a Zotac Mini) to mine equihash coins (ZenCash for now, until there is a sane/safe BTG wallet). It'll be a step up from my single R7-370 which has long since reached ROI when it was mining ETH.

Antpool has a PPS+, which is PPS plus Tx sharing. I am currently mining in that scheme with merge-mining NMC.

Nice that Antpool made the change. That makes it more equitable for the miners, especially in a world where transaction fees per block are growing.
165  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience 2Pac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: November 12, 2017, 05:19:10 AM
ok. so got my first 2pac stick. using a sabrent 4 port 3.0 hub with power supply .
i had the miner working  and it was never at the hash rate of 15gh/s always below and very sparatic like 40mh/s to 3-9gh/s only hit 9 gh/s a few times. my computer had done an update over night while it was mining... well long story short it quit working... did i do some thing on my end? is my hub not strong enough or maybe its over powered? now cgminer displays gsd 0: found 7:3
gsd 0: tx:4 00 00 11
gsd 0: rx bytes(0):
device serial gs- 10016325 not responding
any helpful tips or did i break it lol
Oh just for the record.... on slushpool mining with the single 2pac i found 161k shares... have not seen anyone above or near that... what you think? lol
windows 7 ck built cgminer
no idea how to write code

Try stopping cgminer, unplug/plug the 2pac, then start cgminer again.

161k shares is no big deal. Shares are not blocks. My Compaq (single BM1384) has over 1 million shares right now since the last reboot. It also has just north of 8.8 million shares at pool.ckpool.org. See the link in my sig.

166  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: November 12, 2017, 05:11:18 AM

My 3.4 bcc is now worth quite a lot

Earlier this year I had more than 18 BCC. I sold them for a reasonable amount at the time, but now? well... timing is everything. Like if I had held my over 7k LTC mined in 2012. The LTC I sold in 2016 and is funding my crypto forays today, including miners, and other alts.

System/Network Security

As a security nerd, I am going to attempt to add value to this thread. Since updates are turned off, and there's a pretty wide attack surface, I've been thinking about how to keep my miner(s) isolated from the rest of my systems except for some remote access. Here are some initial thoughts:

- Without hardening the system, I need to put some network access control function/device between my user network and the miners.
  - I have an old broadband router that I can put them behind with the "internet side" facing my internal network.
    - Have the "broadband side" configured with a static IP address on my user network
    - Open TCP/22 (for ssh and scp) and redirect it to the first miner. You can use that one as a jump-box to get to the others
    - Open TCP/3389 (Windows Remote Desktop) and have that directed to a Windows box (old laptop perhaps) and use that as a jump-box for about anything
  - I actually have several actual firewalls (Forcepoint/Sidewinders and a Palo Alto Networks) that can segment the network for me, not to mention IPS, etc.
    - Open the same ports as above?

ASCII Network Diagram

Internet --> Main firewall --> User Network (where my workstations and servers are) --> Miner Firewall/Broadband-router --> Miner Network

Are there any recommendations on OS hardening you could recommend?

If you know your way around your OS, hardening the system is not that hard. Really.

Center for Internet Security is legit and a good place to start: https://learn.cisecurity.org/benchmarks
look for Ubuntu Linux 16.04 (CIS Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS Benchmark version 1.0.0)

  • Do not redirect any traffic to the miners. EVER. NEVER use Windows for access to anything you actually value. It's gotten better, but it's still not safe enough to be used to guard the castle.
  • If you want to set up a jump server, make it multi-homed. This means that there is one interface plugged into the public network (User Network above) and one interface plugged into the private network (Miner network above). If you can not do this, or do not want to create a multi-homed machine, use a single homed machine and use the router to redirect port 22 to that single-homed machine.
  • Do not use passwords alone for users. Use public/private keypairs instead. If you want to be even safer, implement multi-factor authentication. Rudimentary multi-factor authentication can be a combination of public/private keypairs and a password. Here is some good info: https://sysconfig.org.uk/two-factor-authentication-with-ssh.html
  • If you want to secure the miner, since nvOC is based on ubuntu 16.04, use the built-in security tool known as ufw or iptables:  https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/firewall.html
  • Lock down all inbound ports except for port 22 (ssh). Restrict outbound traffic such that you only allow traffic outbound that you know/trust. Know what ports and protocols need to be opened. If you are new to the game, some experimentation will be necessary. If you see a port open and you don't know what it is, close it and see what breaks.
  • If you want to have something running that provides a pretty interface, make sure that the provider of that information can only run in userspace and can not escalate privileges to root. How to do that? Implement sudo properly with a well constructed sudoers file that limits what commands a giver user can execute as root. Make sure that the user that the provider (web server) runs as does not have a real login shell.
  • If you need to use Windows Remote Desktop, tunnel it through ssh so it is at least encrypted.

This BTC vs BCH war is getting dumber by the day....

guess how many tx stuck at mempool...

https://blockchain.info/unconfirmed-transactions

however... my Gen 1 S9s (bmminer v1) which was "outcasted" to Antpool are surprisingly doing much much higher than 100% PPS.

And dont forget, every antminer has hidden hash power that mines for BITMAIN. Yes every miner out there brings revenue for them too=].

Well, gee. Would that be betting that noobs don't remember to change, or know that they can change, from pointing their shiny new toaster at bitmain's own mining pool? You know the one. The one that uses PPS for payout, but keeps all the transaction fees in the blocks for themselves?  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Just imagine what that means. If bitmain's own pool had mined this block:

https://btc.com/0000000000000000007bdc9ed9b9e79fa3010c982a81af7b6b2458d924dc828f

They would have kept 13.40062221 BTC which at current USD exchange rate of 5928.35 USD/BTC is 79,443.58 USD.

The price jump is crazy!  I can't believe how much Bitcoin Cash shot up.  I have to think Bitmain is behind it only accepting bitcoin cash for their miners.

I don't know for sure, but Bitmain has been that way since shortly after the fork, iirc.

I bought into the ICO in the Batch 1 timeframe and now my tokens are currently worth 44% more than I paid, plus I am earning rent on them while I wait for Giga-Watt to install my miner.
No, token dumped to about $1 now, with the 3rd batch release.  People can't use them, because of the delays.

timing is everything. when I posted that message the gain was 44% based on the coinmarketcap web page. When you posted your message the market price for the tokens had dropped. Now it seems to have recovered somewhat. So I'm only up 34%.  Roll Eyes  Since I plan to hodl and use the tokens for miners I buy and renting the unused tokens, I'm not all that concerned.

174  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience 2Pac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: November 12, 2017, 02:44:51 AM
Hey guys,

is there any reason my 2pac isn't running great hashrates on my MacBook. Cant seem to get above 500Mh/s with the stick directly inserted on CGminer. I have a USB 3.0 hub but my computer doesn't want to recognize that either. Would it run better through the hub if I can get it to detect it and could the slow hashing speeds have to do with internet connection.

I tried searching the support threads and forums and google but was hoping for a better answer here or at least some direction. Thanks.

Tarrantula

For the first part, 2pac not running, as others have stated, it's likely a power issue with the USB port on the MacBook. I use an older (mid 2011) Mac mini to run cgminer, but the actual miner is plugged into a powered USB 2 hub. For reference:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1173963.msg17225686#msg17225686

this setup with the Compac is still chugging along. It has plenty of mojo left to run a 2pac if I wanted to add one.

As for the USB 3.0 hub not being recognized, I don't know. Maybe it's a bad cable? Maybe the USB port on the MacBook is only a USB 2 port?
175  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Should I buy Bitcoin miner S9/E9+/Avalon or Litecoin/Altcoin miner or only GPUs on: November 09, 2017, 04:59:11 AM
S9s are still pretty unreliable and there can be issues straight out of the box. Repair isn't exactly cheap for these units in a lot of cases but if the price is right then go for it. I would personally try to buy an Avalon A7 before considering an S9. Bitcoin mining profits have stayed actually relatively good for the last year due to the price of bitcoin increasing. It's unclear from this point where difficulty and price will go, but for both I expect an upward trend. GPUs also require slightly more maintenance than ASICs, though one rig isn't a whole lot to worry about.

If I were going to buy an ASIC miner now, I'd definitely buy a Canaan Avalon 741. Yes, it's not as efficient as the Bitmain S9, but it's more reliable. If you can wait until the new year, you might keep your eyes open for a new miner from Canaan. The rumor is that it will be in the 14 TH/S range which will place it on par with the S9, and if it is more reliable, then it will be a winner in my book.

However, this IS the crypto currency miner space, and delivery dates are never what they are promised or rumored to be.

Check Canaan's website https://canaan.io/official-distributors/ to find a distributor in your country.
176  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best network switch for s9's on: November 09, 2017, 04:38:26 AM
Hey All,

I am looking for recommendations on what brand network switch to use for x4 s9 antminers. I intend to connect the mining switch to my main ASUS wi-fi router with a cable, but wanted to get a 4-5 port switch dedicated to the miners. Will this configuration work? If so, what brand would you recommend for ease of use and compatibility with mining?

On another note, I am hoping to run all 4 of these miners on a 220V 30 AMP clothes dryer outlet in my basement. It is going to be cold for the winter where I live and imagine it is doable. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Cheap is OK. Doesn't need to be fancy.

177  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: ⚡⛏️[ANN] Giga Watt: Best Home for your Mining. Starts today! on: November 09, 2017, 04:08:10 AM
To start with, I am really excited for this to come online and I think its a really good idea.  Its so good that people are copying GW using the same concept.

I don't think the problem is the delay as much as their promises missed and them not communicating. I have only seen two emails about them offering us to sell our miners.

I saw the emails and there have been updates via other means of communications. Slack/Telegram/discord or some such. I'm not interested enough to install yet another communications app on my devices. I can wait.

When I received the email about selling my miner I replied and said I'd wait for my miner to come online.

I still don't know (or even have an estimate) when my tokens will be release in batch 4 (it should have been in the white paper). I don't even know why I'm in batch 4 when I purchased tokens at $1.05. Very confusing. Then I hear they are working on other projects (probably FUD) but who knows?

So there were dates in the white paper. The problem is the white paper dates ran up against reality, and reality won. I believe that the batches have more to do with what buildings/pods they were part of versus the date purchased or the price paid.

Current example: Pod 3 states Pod installation Due now, then the next item is Pod installation Nov 13th: same thing different dates, It also show Building occupancy Oct 31st but now it Nov. 8th.

The challenge here is that Giga-Watt doesn't seem to be updating the timeline on their website all that often. But maybe the dates have not changed because they are not being told that the dates have changed, i.e.: the inspections were due, but were delayed and not rescheduled; the paperwork for the occupancy permits was not delivered, etc.

The real world can be a funny place, and it works on it's own timeline which only occasionally lines up with your desired timeline.

Where is your team located btw?

We live in a global economy/world. What difference does it make where are the teams located ? Would you support the project if the team was located in the USA and not if it was located in Asia.

A simple question requires but a simple answer.

Perhaps one might think it is simple. What if there are 8 devs on the team and each one lives in a different country? Which one do you choose?

So is there a ways to reset the single gekko that is not hashing at all? plug and unplug them back will do the trick right?

unplug/plug is the appropriate method. It works for me all of the time.
180  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: ⚡⛏️[ANN] Giga Watt: Best Home for your Mining. Starts today! on: November 08, 2017, 02:57:27 AM
Why are you guys delaying this WTT for so long... It is bad for investor sentiment...

Because Giga-Watt is real world, and in the real world delays happen. In Giga-Watt's case local government inspectors needed more education/time, then certifying agency inspectors (UL) wanted different power supplies. In both cases Giga-Watt did what was necessary to keep moving.

The problem is that there are a lot of people that think that everything crypto moves at internet speed. Well, when crypto meets real world, things slow down. Kinda like when miner hardware companies promise to deliver your miners, but don't deliver for many, many months, if ever in some cases.

If your investment thesis demands that everything be perfectly on time, you will be disappointed. If you have a long(ish) time horizon, you can be patient.

Investor sentiment is for wankers and snowflakes. The wankers and snowflakes that get upset bail out and sell out, making it easier for more patient investors to pick up the investment at lower prices.

I bought into the ICO in the Batch 1 timeframe and now my tokens are currently worth 44% more than I paid, plus I am earning rent on them while I wait for Giga-Watt to install my miner.
