341  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][Datacoin] Datacoin blockchain start announcement (Minor code upd + logo) on: February 11, 2014, 09:59:22 AM
I see Namecoin (and Huntercoin) have a name_update transaction.  They use it to update domain names (Namecoin) and player data/positions (Huntercoin).

Could this transaction be used to update data in Datacoin?

I was 13 hours behind in syncing.  Now, after 12 hours of syncing, I am still 5 hours behind!

Huntercoin generates too many blocks too fast.  We cannot catch up.  But I suppose it has to generate blocks fast to have decent gameplay.  I think the game is bumping up against a fundamental limit (block propagation speed).

343  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HUC] Huntercoin - Human Minable - HF- UPDATE 1.05 - 9th/Feb/14 on: February 10, 2014, 09:36:59 PM
Ahh...  Debug.log says I am receiving 1 block every 30 seconds.  With errors it drops down to 1 block per minute.

But Huntercoin is also generating 1 block every minute!!!!   Shocked

So catching up is very, very slow.  That is why we cannot sync.  The number of new blocks generated is almost the same as the number of blocks received when we try to sync!

We need 10 minute blocks, not 1 minute blocks!

Or we need to propagate the blocks at a rate of 10 seconds or so.  But I suppose with more and more players the rate of propagation across the network is slowing down.  At some point the rate of propagation will be less than 1 block per minute, and then the game will collapse.

Blockchain is taking FOREVER to sync.  I have been on 8 - 9 hours behind for about 6 hours now.

In debug.log I keep on seeing "Flushed wallet.dat = 22900ms" etc.

What does that mean?  Seems like a long time to waste.

The two arrows in a circle are moving very very slowly - about once every 15 minutes.  And they advance only a little bit.

Are we being DDOSed?

Mind you - has anybody checked why the blockchain takes so long to sync?  Any funny loops in there?  With most coins 2 weeks would sync very quickly.

At the current rate new players wll eventually take weeks and months to sync.  And that would make the game unplayable.

I do think that soon the blockchain will be too big to download.  Any thoughts on pruning it?  Thin client?

Can I delete debug.log?  It is getting quite big.
347  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HUC] Huntercoin - Human Minable - HF- UPDATE 1.05 - 9th/Feb/14 on: February 10, 2014, 03:09:44 PM
I am not sure why other people are having problems, but I have been happily playing this game for 3 days now.  Collected about 50 coins, and upgraded successfully every time.  Never had to delete files or -rescan.  I am on version 1.005 at the moment.

When you start the wallet it takes about an hour or two to sync, depending on how far you are behind.  During that time it appears to be frozen, and a lot of other things on your PC become slow.  But be patient.  The blockchain is big.

I am on Lubuntu 13.04, and I boot into text mode before I start X.  That has always been the way to stay stable in Linux.

A few questions.  Can I delete debug.log?  It is becoming quite a large file.
Must I put huntercoin.conf in the .huntercoin directory?

Great gameplay.  Very enjoyable.

This is a gamechanger, and history in the making.  In the future your names will be mentioned in the same breath as the dearly departed Nakamoto (peace be upon him).

Forgive me if I let my thoughts run a little, but I suppose in the future you will allow us to build things in Huntercoin.  And maybe send them out to 3D printers.  Perhaps even Worldforge (www.worldforge.org) could be linked to this coin.

Currencies that provide us with data storage, CPU (BOINC) processing, messaging and gaming are the ones that will live forever.  Huntercoin, Namecoin, Datacoin, Gridcoin, Curecoin etc - they will stand after all the other me-too clones have been washed out to sea.  They monetize the assets of the P2P network.  Or, in the case of Huntercoin, they reorganise human society to produce pleasure or useful work.

You mention that your partner found the fatal flaw in Namecoin.  So he is libcoin, right?

Bravo.

Does anyone have a compiled linux client they wish to share? Or maybe some instructions regarding compiling as this is something I never do on linux but obviously should start.

I cloned it with git:

git clone https://github.com/chronokings/huntercoin

Then compile with Qt Creator - run the huntercoin-qt.pro file from inside Qt Creator.

Worked fine (Lubuntu 13.04).

You can buy the Huntercoin on an exchange:

It is the last coin listed.

IMHO oocook5u should check out OFF (if he doesn't know about it already):

datacoin = bitcoin + bittorrent ?

Eventually, yes, something like that.

Quote
lots of questionmarks/problems
-the links to private files in the blockchain will become obsolete over time so fast and they can not be removed as a blockchain is meant to be static.
-why the currency is built in the sharing system? (or vice versa) There is already decentralized sharing systems such as bittorrent working fine. If this datacoin is for file shares, I can already simply pay some service in bitcoins for providing me some torrent download link or something without datacoin (probably I won't need to pay anything for downloading a torrent but let's assume it is rare and I do). How different/better datacoin is than this solution?

I understood that links can be updated/redirected in subsequent transactions. Personally I am not too worried about the hygiene of the blockchain.

Datacoin is superior because it is decentralised and uncensorable, and there wil be an incentive to share files (the nodes will be paid).  All in the blockchain.  Combining bitcoin and bittorrent forces you to use a centralised service.

You should wait for the developer (oocook5u) to actually implement the private chains.  These ideas are so new that it will take some time for the implications to become clear.  I'm taking a 5/10 year view.

358  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][Datacoin] Next step: web applications inside blockchain (demo) on: February 02, 2014, 05:59:29 PM
Ultimately the blockchain will only have metadata - keys, torrents, links etc.  The actual data will be in private chains on the nodes.  So Datacoin will become almost like a distributed file sharing service.  With a built-in currency to prevent leeching - the nodes will be paid to serve up the data.
