1  Economy / Collectibles / Re: CryptoVest Physical Litecoins on: September 09, 2023, 05:00:17 PM
Let me know if you have any trouble converting keys or redeeming coins. So far... (knock on wood), I have been able to solve all issues for anyone that has contacted me privately about having issues redeeming CryptoVest coins.

The only known issue (which is pretty much a non-issue, just an inconvenience) thus far has to do with the font I used to print the private key inserts. It is sometimes challenging to distinguish which character the private key is due to similarities in the font and the small font size. If you are having trouble redeeming a private key and you are sure you are doing it correctly, then try looking for characters that may look alike, such as: 8 and B, k and K, or 1 and I.

In one instance, someone was having trouble redeeming a CryptoVest coin, and after giving the usual directions of how to redeem them and it still not working, I then asked them to send me a picture of the coin insert. After a lot of trial and error switching out lowercase characters for uppercase etc, I finally figured out that the lower case k looked like an uppercase K. After switching it out I was able to redeem the value, which I forwarded on to the coin's owner (+ a Litecoin for bringing it to my attention).

As of today this remains to be the only known issue that I've identified regarding the coins that I made, and it's an easy fix.

I've had absolutely zero notifications of anyone having their private keys compromised, of any counterfeit coins, or any other major issues. I hope and pray that this will continue to remain true for eternity, but please feel free to come forward (publicly or privately) if anything happens to your keys, or if you see anything suspicious. I would like to be alerted, and to alert the community. Thanks!

Good afternoon,

Long time no post! I feel like I must have communicated this at some point in the past, but I feel the need to do it again as more and more time passes and I see random businesses, websites, communities and even hackers use the term "CryptoVest".

I'd like to be clear that I have no association with any of these entities, and have not done anything with CryptoVest since I released these physical Litecoins. Although this venture still holds a special place in my heart, to be honest I seriously doubt that I ever will use it again or make any coins in the future.

There's one other thing regarding the coins themselves that I'd like to share. I still hold about 100 special edition coins which I opted not to sell, but I never made certificates of authenticity for these coins because at the time I was exhausted from assembling all of the coins that I sold. This slipped my mind when I destroyed the hard drive which stored these CoAs long ago, and I no longer have the ability to make them using existing design files, nor the desire the desire to re-create the design files in order to make them.

IE. There are about a 100 special edition coins without Certificates of Authenticity which are still in my possession. I'm not sure when or if I'll ever sell these, but I wanted it to be known that they do exist and are legit despite having no CoA. In my opinion, I think the act of me selling them, or passing them down to my heirs, should be sufficient enough as proof of authenticity. It would be very hard for me to create counterfeit coins as I don't have the expertise necessary nor the design files, and I feel like my actions in this community speaks for itself as far as my trustworthiness and character.

Thanks and I hope this update finds ya'll well!

Be good,

William

Negative trust removed.

I'm sorry to necro this thread, but I wanted to say thank you for this Smoothie! I hope you are doing well, and that you and your family are far away from the recent incident around Lahaina. Smiley

Hey!

I thought this may be the best place in the forums to share my new project. I'd be grateful for any feedback that ya'll have!  Grin

www.bitcoinmaximalism.com

Your website is very nice, but this post belongs to the "Project developement" sub-forum.

Thanks! Maybe so, but I thought I would get more valuable feedback in this subforum... I guess that I was wrong, lol!

I'll move it now if the settings allow for it.

Edit: It won't allow me to move it- sorry!

6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Is Ethereum a bubble? on: September 09, 2018, 03:51:55 PM
Personally, I still see a lot of promise in Ethereum. The reasons that I changed my mind about it being a bubble are still true:

- Big Network Effect
- Large smart contract developer community
- Solid team of core developers

Everyone likes shiny new toys, so EOS has recently taken some market share, but I think that Ethereum will take some of this back if given enough time to implement things like sharding, PoS, and other scalability features.

Larimer's blockchains have a history of getting hyped up upon release, then fading away into irrelevancy due to many missteps. Personally, I think having developers pay for fees is a terrible model that most developers will want to avoid. I certainly wouldn't like the headache of planning my dApp in a way to make sure it doesn't go broke and need to be injected with extra cash later.

IMO, the recent price decline (to BTC) is mostly due to an overral cryptocurrency paradigm where ALTs perform exeptionally poorly in bear markets. Now noobs are starting to panic in their first bear market. Most noobs that I know were investing in ETH last year because Bitcoin was "old" and "boring".

I'm sorry to see this turned into a trainwreck. I hope this doesn't harm the participant's will to support DEX projects. They will be an essential cornerstone of the crypto economy.

I might be interested depending on price. I only have a few regular edition coind left. Empty Special Edition coins seem to be going for about $100 FWIW. PM me if you want to offer me a price. 😁

A Ukrainian hacker group dubbed Coinhoarder

Just popping in to say that I obviously have nothing to do with this, because I don't know any Ukranians....

Well... as long as you don't count the random Ukranian couple I met while staying at a hostel in Amsterdam, with whom I have not had any contact ever since. 😂

I like Bitshares best. Unless you're looking for ERC20 coins... then maybe ForkDelta
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Your favorite stablecoin?? on: April 11, 2018, 03:45:26 AM
Bitshares' bitUSD has been holding its decentralized and autonomous peg since 2014. It operates on free market dynamics, is collateralized >1.5x by the BTS token, and trades on its own decentralized exchange.

So whats this look like one year later?
Hi!

I almost forgot about this thread. Smiley

IMO... not bad considering I didn't make any adjustments. I think I could have done better with active management.

Some commentary:

- I think this bear market will be much shorter than the previous year+ long bear markets due to the amount of $$$ waiting on the sidelines that's chomping at the bit to get in. This money will see the large correction and assume (correctly) that now is the best time to get into the game.
- I think I focused too much on diversification. If I would have stuck to a smaller number of quality projects, then I think I would have fared better (something like BTC/LTC/ETH/XMR/BTS... which have been my top 5 for a long time now). The VC-like "spray and pray" approach is probably not optimal for forming a crypto portfolio because the mid/low caps have a high amount of risk/uncertainty.
- It is no surprise that the coins that appreciated the most have a working product, decent network effect, are generally accepted as being legit on a technical basis, started out as medium/large caps, and they all have good reputations on Bitcointalk... which is still where I think the most knowledgeable alt coiners conversate most (you just have to filter through a lot of B.S., but it is more organized than Twitter- with the same amount of B.S.)
- If I were to remake the CH Index now, then I would leave a majority of these coins off the list and replace them with newer more promising coins (things move fast in cryptoland).
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: The DEX (Decentralized Exchange) Thread on: March 25, 2018, 06:59:30 PM
Some have come up. The likes of IDEX, Forkdelta, Token Market are some good ones. I'm particularly impressed by IDEX's UI and hitchfree trading although the minimum withdraw funds are higher than most I've seen in other dexs

Thanks for the recommendations. Those names have come up before up-thread, but I just haven't had time to check them out... hopefully I can soon.

I just added Bancor too. TBH, I am pretty impressed with the simple and straightforward approach of it. It also provides a novel solution to the liquidity problem most DEXs and decentralized/autonomous stablecoins face.

Bancor
- Status: Released
- Website: https://www.bancor.network/
- BCT Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1789222.0
Strengths:
- Working implementation
- Fully autonomous and decentralized
- Allows straightforward and simple (Shapeshift-like) exchanges
- A novel and elegant solution to the liquidity problem most DEXs and decentralized/autonomous stablecoins face
Weaknesses:
- Only compatible with Ethereum and/or ERC-20 tokens
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: The DEX (Decentralized Exchange) Thread on: March 25, 2018, 06:45:49 PM
0x has been added to the list:

0x Protocol
- Status: Released
- Website: https://0xproject.com/
- Exchange: https://0xproject.com/portal
- Whitepaper: https://0xproject.com/pdfs/0x_white_paper.pdf
Strengths:
- Working implementation
- Fully autonomous and decentralized
- 0x is a DEX "fat protocol" that other projects are building on top of, thus liquidity will be shared among multiple exchanges
Weaknesses:
- Only compatible with Ethereum and/or ERC-20 tokens

Multisig (both N/N and N-1/N) will be included in the next release (0.12), which is targeted to be released next week.

When is the release date? Next week at 28th March 2018 or week after next week at 6th April 2018?
Here both are mentioned.

How far along are multi-signature addresses in Monero? Judging by this pull request, I would assume they are already operational by using the CLI wallet? https://github.com/monero-project/monero/pull/3489

Multi-sig will enable Monero p2p FIAT on/off ramps and DEXs, and I think it is important to enable developers to create such (seeing as though regulators are stepping up their enforcement efforts and authoritative bravado.)
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where have all the cypherpunks gone? on: March 10, 2018, 04:45:22 PM
You sound a lot like the people who lamented that the internet, which was supposed to level the playing field and allow the little guy as much power as a big corporation, got taken over by bigger and bigger corporations, to the point that the old style small blogger with their own lovingly tended domain, has just disappeared.

This is how adoption looks...

Perhaps you are right that I am naive to assume decentralized technologies and cryptography can change the world. I'd like to still remain hopeful that they can do so in the long run due to their decentralized nature, despite the challenges adoption brings, and change the world for the better.

I think it is naive to not understand (and proactively combat) the risk that such profiteers introduce. They can perform a hostile takeover, and make drastic changes to Bitcoin that go against the cypherpunk ethoses. Things such as blacklists, kyc, confiscation, whitelists, surveillance, regulations, laws, accredited investor advantages, etc. will likely become commonplace if cypherpunks underestimate the threat profiteers pose.

They are currently in the majority but i don't think they have any influence about the matter at all.
I hope this is correct. I am not so certain though- doubtful even.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where have all the cypherpunks gone? on: March 10, 2018, 04:34:42 PM
What do you guys think? Is the movement doomed, or is it just becoming harder to notice support for the cypherpunk cause due to the influx of the profiteers? These profiteers are seemingly a large majority now, can Bitcoin fight them off and remain true to the cypherpunk ethos?

We do not need to fight them off, we need to have them with us and consider them as assets.

That is a good point. Perhaps I worded that question poorly.

I am just worried about the profiteers lobbying for more regulations or for changes to the Bitcoin's and other cryptocurrencies' protocols that go against cypherpunk ethos. Almost like a hostile takeover. This is what I mean by fight them off.... fight them off from changing things for the worse.

I don't have a problem with their participation or profiteering, as long as core cypherpunk ethoses are able to be maintained despite their participation.

We cannot expect the cypherpunks to go public, conduct seminars, post video tutorials on youtube, etc about Crypto.
Good point. I hope more work is being done behind the scenes than I realize. It is hard to tell without really digging for it due to all the "lambo" noise on cryptocurrency social media and forums.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Where have all the cypherpunks gone? on: March 10, 2018, 03:41:39 PM
The only people that seem to want cryptocurrencies regulated are the people that simply want to leave with more FIAT than they came with. I still have faith that the cypherpunks will beat out regulators and profiteers and that decentralized & private technologies will win out in the long run, but it seems like an uphill battle- now more than ever.

The problem is that the cryptocurrency community has slowly become a large majority of profiteers rather than cypherpunks. The community ethos has changed dramatically for the worse since I joined in 2012, when most Bitcoiners seemed to be of similar cypherpunk-like mentality. How can we ensure the cypherpunk movement is not stifled by regulators and profiteers?

I think the best way forward is to make sure of two things (even if it requires hard forks to maintain them):

1. Cryptocurrencies, and the surrounding infrastructure, need to be made to be as decentralized as possible (including exchanges, markets, social media, etc.)
2. Cryptocurrencies need to be made to be as private and fungible as possible (by leveraging tor, i2p, ring signatures, zk proofs, coin join, etc.)

What do you guys think? Is the movement doomed, or is it just becoming harder to notice support for the cypherpunk cause due to the influx of the profiteers? These profiteers are seemingly a large majority now, can Bitcoin fight them off and remain true to the cypherpunk ethos?
