81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 30, 2017, 03:04:41 AM
This BTC rocket ship has me baffled, There are some monster investors in now

It is Bitcoin's Network Effect.

The recent ATH after ATH after ATH fans the flames of The Network Effect even more.

Big money goes into BTC first because of The Network Effect.

The big money will trickle down to Monero and other legitimate (and probably some not so legitimate) ALT coins eventually.

They haven't heard of it yet and/or don't understand it yet. That time will come eventually tho...
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Will Splinter Once More Into "Ethereum Casper" and "Ethereum" on: November 29, 2017, 03:26:13 PM
Is this for real? OMG. i don't even understand about the casper will generate the more fork to the ethereum itself. But what about the ethereum itself? I think that if there will be another proof should be good too to give the more reliable sources about this. In my experience that the ethereum already forked around 5 times but the only dao that generates the forked coin.

Huh? This is the speculation subforum, and I am speculating about the future...
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Will Splinter Once More Into "Ethereum Casper" and "Ethereum" on: November 29, 2017, 04:14:35 AM
Cool little article, should be interesting to see where all the ICO's go, you're probably right and they'll go with Vitalik caus of his influence.

Thanks! It will indeed be interesting.

I had another after thought:

I worry about what the move to PoS/Casper will do to the profitability of GPU mining. When the GPU miners that are mining Ethereum switch over to other chains, the difficulty for other chains will skyrocket. Expect profitability of GPU mining to go way down for at least several months after ETH switches over to Casper.

Some will give up on mining and sell their hardware because it will not be worth the time and energy, then profitability will eventually return to normal levels. If you eat the losses or break even for those months and wait can out the storm, it could prove much more lucrative than liquidating your hardware. Similar situations have occurred when $BTC and $LTC switched from GPU mining to ASIC mining, yet GPU mining is profitable today.

Things could get even uglier for GPU miners though if an overall $crypto bear market settles in around the same time $ETH switches over to Casper.
84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Will Splinter Once More Into "Ethereum Casper" and "Ethereum" on: November 29, 2017, 02:52:20 AM
It's interesting what will happen with the price on ETH and ETH Casper.

Miners will support the mining fork or will switch to BTG if it's more profitable.

ICOs will support POS ETH. At because their are holding enormous amounts of ETH.

My only hopes are to not screw both coins...

I think that Vitilak might have enough sway in the community to make "Ethereum Casper" the main Ethereum chain, and "Ethereum Classic v2" will be the less dominant chain.

ICOs will have stake in both forks, but most will probably stick with Vitalik. Some might stay on the "Ethereum Classic v2" fork though.

I think that the above is almost a certainty. What will be interesting to me is which chain will be more valuable? Ethereum Classic or "Ethereum Classic v2"Huh

I posit Ethereum Classic will be more valuable because it is the original chain and did not have a roll back. At the end of the day, Ethereum's value comes from "applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third party interference." When the chain is rolled back, it kind of negates the selling point of running without third party interference.

A blog post equating Cryptocurrencies to contracts, and breach of contract almost always resulting in forks.

Evidence Provided:
ETH -> ETC
BCN -> XMR
XRP -> XLM
BTC -> BCH

Quote
Creating a cryptocurrency is similar to writing a contract (when it comes to the economics of such), and buying a cryptocurrency is like agreeing to that same contract. The contract is written in programming language, enforced by each node on the peer-to-peer network, and then it is further enforced by miners or stakeholders (depending on if it is a PoW or PoS cryptocurrency). Included in this contract are the stipulations on exactly how a cryptocurrency functions, and the economic realities of each cryptocurrency’s distinct ecosystem are defined within these stipulations.

Thanks!

For those who think Monero's tail emission is a bad idea...?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2460853.0
I don't think tail emissions are necessarily a bad idea.

They are probably ideal for a cryptocurrency that wants to mimic cash, since a small amount of inflation encourages more spending than inflation-nuetral or deflationary coins.

Also, tail emissions might be necessary for the security of PoW chains after the majority of coins have been mined. It is not clear to me that PoW coins without tail emissions can be secure enough from only transaction fees. It depends on how much the PoW cryptocurrency is used when that time comes.

I did not mark it down for the tail emission. I marked it down because almost 90% of the entire coinbase is mined in the first 4 years. That is not ideal as far as longterm distribution goes, and probably creates a lot of early adopter whales compared to a slower emission curve.

@Smooth

Thanks for your post!

I am writing a report on Monero... quick question:

https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/405/how-many-transactions-per-second-can-the-monero-network-handle

But have there been any tests in a development environment as to just how limiting bandwidth and memory is?

Sorry for the bad formatting, it was copied from a row in Excel...

I will eventually be developing the undeveloped websites too. That is... unless you would like to purchase one of them from me.

If you are interested in paying me develop the domain (or another domain you own) for you, then I would consider that as well.

Negotiations/Offers accepted via PM or email only. PM me for my email.

90  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Storj (SJCK) vs. Siacoin (SC) - Discussion on: November 27, 2017, 12:11:30 AM
What about FileCoin ?? It seems to be a direct competitor to SIA and Storj. Does anyone know the difference ?
Also MaidSafe Coin seem to have the same purpose than Sia. What do you think about it ?

I gave up mining SIA a while back (and switched to a non storage based coin) simply because, I don't see a future for it. I can't see any large company wanting to go through the hassle (and risks) of exchanging cash for SIA then using it to buy storage. Currency fluctuations can have big effects on profitability (Lots of UK businesses after Brexit have seen profits squeezed, or even wiped out after GBP took a dive) Why would a large company already at risk of currency fluctuations increase that risk by also getting involved with crypto markets, and with something as important / essential as storage?

With high speed networks, falling SSD prices (and increasing capacities) along with super reliable HDD's does SIA really have a large scale customer out there? Perhaps content creators could find a use for SIA as an alternative back up space - but the likes of a large multinational with huge storage requirements would probably already have their own facilities in place. Honestly, I don't see enough small scale users to make up the difference.

So, that's why I got out - I don't think the demand will ever match the supply. I think it's important to have faith in any project you're investing in (whether it's buying coins or using resources to mine them, it all counts as an investment!) - I have a great deal of respect for all those who do believe that there's a future for SIA - perhaps you can see something I can't... (or maybe you are just smarter than me!) - however, for me - I think there are better options out there.

I came to a similar conclusion:

SJCX and SC are both operational, but there is little to no demand for the services. I recently (the past couple days) looked into a few ways to profitably utilize my extra hard drive space. The amount of demand for SJCX and SC storage space left me quite uninterested in these projects. Maybe demand will pick up and slowly grow over time, but I think it may be years (closer to 5 to 10 years) before they gain traction- if they do at all. So, I have taken them out of my portfolio, as I think they will stay at or under their current valuations for some time. The demand just isn't there for these services.

Good point about token value fluctuation being a hassle and risk. This can potentially be an issue with all utility tokens. One way around this though is if Atomic Swaps (or similar Shapeshift-like service) are implemented on the utility token, and then they are only purchased and used immediately... practically negating fluctuation risk/hassle. A working "stable coin" with Atomic Swaps is necessary though... something like bitUSD, Nubits, or Tether.
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Spin-offs: bootstrap an altcoin with a btc-blockchain-based initial distribution on: November 26, 2017, 03:07:30 PM

This is very interesting but, are you sure that you can apply this metric universally while disregarding all other factors? Amount of users holding a currency may not be the exact correlation between price. For example, it could just be a side product of another variable such as, the amount of merchants that accept a currency as a means of payment which would naturally equate to a wider network but would not mean that the price is correlated with the network size but rather, the range of use-cases currently available.

Of course it is an overgeneralization. Actual price discovery is much more complicated, and is based off of many factors, such as:

Network Effect, usage, utility, quality of developers, quantity of developers, consensus mechanisms, features, hype, security, fungibility, amount of research at the protocol level by acadamia, emission curve, inflation properties, market/niche, road map, road map feasibility (time constraints and technical), competition, governance, wallet flavors (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, GUI, light wallets, hardware wallets, etc.), reputation, volume, liquidity, historical performance, transaction capacity, transaction speeds, transaction fees, transaction privacy, metadata privacy.... and that's just off the top of my head.

Spinoffs are the new flavor of the week in cryptoland (first copy and pasta coins, then IPOs, then ICOs... now spinoffs). Just like almost all ALT coins, the value of the majority of them will tend towards zero. The network effect of Bitcoin will reign supreme.

2nd layer technologies and sidechains will be able to do just about everything any altcoin or spinoff can do anyways. By leveraging atomic swaps, Bitcoin can remain the epic store of value that it always has been meanwhile gaining all of the features of any ALT coin.

At the end of the day, spinoffs are simply a tool that scammers can utilize to fleece greater fools. As is being evidenced by the BCH, BTG, and BCD pump and dumps.

93  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin will be worth $100k in under 5 years, and eventually over 375k on: November 20, 2017, 06:02:36 AM

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about Bitcoin and its future. It has gone up a lot since I first started learning and following it in 2012... from $10 each to $8000 each, or +80000%. I've been wondering if it is simply a bubble. Such performance from a commodity is indeed unheard of, and based on just that alone certainly seems unsustainable.
After much research and thought, I have decided that it is not a bubble, and I have even been putting my money where my mouth is by buying fractions of a Bitcoin with each weekly paycheck since March. Let me describe my thought process as succinctly as possible (bear with me… lol).

Sorry didn't get your objective completely.

No problem

If I'm not wrong you have linked to a sort of white paper in the link. Which designs needs a suggestion?

Yes

Also by design do you mean ... the architecture of your system ?

Yes, the architecture.

I would like to review it if by design you don't mean 'actual graphics'.

Not graphics related- I am asking for peer review of the idea/concept.

Hey CH,

Your items have become the bragging point of my nephews, i bought a few Zinodaurs back in the day. His cohort are gen Y and none believed the physical existence of your coins and LTC in general.

I gave both of them a coin for Christmas years ago they still have.

If you are hunting some holograms maybe we can come to an arrangement i have many spares from you left over.

Can we expect some more fine coin work from you or are you just popping to clarify the whole CV domain issue?

I did notice that recently and just wondered if you were just diversifying.

By your statement above its clear that is not the case.

Good to see you are till kicking around.

UA

Howdy,

I gave away a lot of coins for Christmas the year I minted the coin too! They make great gifts!! It is nice that physical cryptocurrencies can help introduce people to the crypto world!! Some people need to hold it in their hands and see it with their own eyes before believing or "getting it".

I personally have no need for the holograms. I do not have any, but I never intend to redeem the value on the coins either. If I want to get rid of them I will simply sell the coin with the hologram intact.

There have been several people that have contacted me for extra holograms, but since I have destroyed all of the remaining ones there was nothing I could do. I would not be surprised if you (eventually) receive a few PMs with people offering to buy them after seeing that you own some. Or, I am sure they would sell on Ebay. To be honest, I have no clue what they're worth.

Eventually I will mint some more coins, starting with a physical Bitcoin to honor my word from the Bitcoin design contest, but I am not sure when that will happen. It is not high up on my to-do list to be honest. With the way cryptocurrency values are appreciating so quickly, it is hard for me to make the investment that it requires to mint coins. I figure it will be a tough proposition to make enough from doing such to outpace what I can make by simply investing in cryptocurrencies. That's just the sad truth for this project... :\

One day though- I am determined to continue where I left off eventually.

Thanks for the message! It is good to hear from you!!!

That looks dope! I'll be hanging around.

Awesome. Thanks for your support. Smiley

TBH- I have been a little discouraged by the lack of traffic on the site, and have not done any development work at all in the past couple months. That will change soon, because I am determined to keep improving the website... whether anyone is using it or not- lol!

I will be fixing bugs and adding additional features, including improvements on existing features and a Bitcoin related blockchain-based card game.

My apologies that I have not reviewed and published enough links and technologies for the remaining bounties to be won. To be honest, I have been pretty busy and it is not at the top of my to-do list. The bounties are still valid, and will be paid out as soon as I get to publishing enough technologies and links for people to win the bounties.  Grin

I did however want to share with ya'll that I am doing a giveaway on Twitter:

Hello all!

I just wanted to make sure that it is known that I have no association with http://www.cryptovest.com anymore. Anything they say or do (or don't say or do) should in no way be associated with the CryptoVest that mints physical cryptocurrencies.

I lost the domain after failing to renew it on time, then a domain squatter snatched it up, and they wanted me to pay $1500 to get it back. Out of moral and financial quandry, I refused to buy back the domain I had originally purchased for $10.

A new website is coming to the domain for my CryptoVest physical cryptocurrency projects: http://www.cryptovest.us/

Also, I have never had any association whatsoever with https://www.cryptovest.co.uk/

There was a book released as a physical cryptocurrency reference book that wrongly associated my physical cryptocurrency project with the .co.uk website and association.

I was the first person to use the business name CryptoVest, and all others have simply copied the name (whether knowingly or not).

Thanks,

Ch
