and signing message will not cut it, because some of those were not carrying any address in their profile
A message posted in their profile is useless as there's no logs of them and anyone can change it on a whim. They need to be on an unedited post on the forum from a long time ago so people can prove they account belongs to them without a doubt.

That's what this thread is for - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0I guess there's still the risk of the person quoting it being an alt but it's better than nothing.

You can ask your escrow to help you on check it whether it is hacked account or not because if you simply ask seller they would not even tell you. May be you can check it through meta. Its on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0a better piece of advice would rather be that you should ask for a signed message from an address that was posted a long time ago. While it is always recommended to use escrow for trades, most escrow agents are not going to have sufficient expertise to be able to protect you from hacked accounts. I know of at least one instance recently when an escrow accepted a signed message from an address that was posted that day which is worthless. Not surprisingly, the account turned out to be hacked.

If it were me, I would only accept a signed message from an address that was posted at least 2+ months prior. Even then, it could be hacked, but at least at that length of time, the account would have been dormant so is unlikely to be recovered anyway.

so does it basically come down to who can provide a signed message from an address posted further back in time? in the case of the recently posted address for instance.

it is a proof of ownership, if a seller can prove that he own the account, then the buyer is safe for the possible retrieval attempt

it is a proof of ownership, if a seller can prove that he own the account, then the buyer is safe for the possible retrieval attempt Consider this hypothetical: An account is dormant for a few months. It is hacked, the hacker posts an address, and then sells it a couple months later. The account is then recovered by the original owner, who can sign a message from a post made a year ago.

With that amount, you can buy full member-sr.member. But probably only full member you may get .

Mind=blown. Well not really, but sort of. This never even occurred to me. I guess the ideal is to have a signed message from an address posted really far back.... a year or more, depending on he account rank. That would make this pretty unlikely.
