If we are going to provide a bitcoin node to as part of our servicesnodes, 1gb ram + swap & 50gb drive storage will be a minimum.

Cheap VPS provider's TOS may also be problematic. Some individuals that were running a full bitcoin node were shut down with no warning. Might require some due diligence before purchasing services.

Thought I would check out terms of service before signing up, and one provider sent a ticket request back saying - no bitcoin allowed on their servers.  Waiting to see if I get a reply back on the reason why not.

So I guess this will be a recurring issue.

edit

a response:  They cause trouble!

So I guess its a Bitcoin node technical issue. Can't imagine what, atm.

Testing will start in about a month (hopefully earlier).

What we are in need right now are full spreadcoin nodes.

If you can run a full spreadcoin node (with open port 41678) for the next few months, then PM me your IP.

I've heard of memory leak problems with bitcoind in the past but I can't see a VPS provider being concerned how you utilise your memory!

Right...I have a couple of hours free to try and get a full SPR node working tonight.  I reckon its easy and you can call me Susan if I don't get it working without any help.

if you let me know what i need to get it all running - ill setup a system specifically for it ...

which means it will have a dedicated ip to get the node functional - especially for the next few months ... i can setup a few on different dedicated systems if you like ...

which simply means - i dont have any ip that i can give - until i set it all up ...

let me know mate ...

1) Have a linux server ready with a static IP (don't use your home computer, even if it's 24 hours online)

2) compile the spreadcoin daemon, or download it. (It's included in the linux binary: http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/SpreadCoin64.tar.xz)

3) start the daemon by typing:

Code:
spreadcoind &

4) The daemon will probably complain that you don't have a spreadcoin.conf file in whatever data-folder spreadcoin has created (depends what usermode you are in)
(Spreadcoind will tell you the path to the folder)

5) So go ahead and create a spreadcoin.conf file in spreadcoin directory with this text in it:

Code:
rpcuser=SOMETHING
rpcpassword=VERYLONGCOMPLICATEDPASSWORD
maxconnections=1000
timeout=20000
port=41678
txindex=1

6) Restart spreadcoind, and test its progress now and then until its synched:

Code:
spreadcoind getinfo

If everything works, and you are fully synched, PM me your IP and I will check your node's accesibility,
and if everything is right, I will add you to the list of full spreadcoin nodes (fallback nodes)

FYI

Very cool.

But the big difference between such a device and servicenodes
is that nobody will supervise that those devices are actually working 24/7.
And they won't receive constant reward for doing so.

Also, they are obviously targeted at homes, and not at servers,
so I am not sure about either connectivity and availability.

It is an interesting niche product which will help bitcoin for sure,
and it will help the producer even more.  Grin

And 10 Watts is a very good argument!

gjhiggins has already done that:

hi all ...

we have a few issues that we need to fix today - so the install of the node will be delayed ... by half a day ...

the install will consist of a dedicated server with a dedicated ip address specifically for the running of the node for testing ...

question - how large is the blockchain download when fully synced? ...

georgem - how many nodes are you willing to accept from our end ( on separate servers and locations ) if the first install is successful? ...

I am in communication with the vps that said they didn't want to host bitcoin nodes.

They are reviewing their TOS again.

I also posted a question on r/bittcoin and I've had a few helpful responses:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3531q1/vps_wont_let_me_setup_a_full_bitcoin_node_why/

Interestingly, while initially being up voted, its since been down voted.

edit

Looks like some VPS providers have an affiliate program.

Well, that got me thinking. 10%-20% going to a dev fund?  I'll take a look at which ones pay for referrals and the devs can think about signing up and putting various links on the website.

2,000 instances * $10/instance * 12 months * 20% = $48k  Tongue

edit edit

Just a thought - if we are going to be running bitcoin nodes and we did get an affiliates program going, perhaps we can allocate some of this dev fund from affiliates to retain technical input from a bitcoin core dev, say $10k/year?
