It was an extremely risky move on the part of Duren and his agent, and it's safe to say they got incredibly lucky this time. In any case, if the Pistons' front office decided to sign him to such a contract after all, it means they still see enormous potential in him, especially in the long term.

I think the pistons already inform them that if duren will not sign they will now move on, duren was really ignoring offer before, maybe he changes his mind after what he has found out, although its my speculation that the piston reach out with that something.
But they were too greedy that they could have lost this deal in the first place, that is a big amount of money for a player who did not show up in the playoffs, so they have now woken up from their dream and will not pursue a bigger offer because no one will.

It seems that action they made is part of their negotiation tactic.

They still succeed on this, since the first offer they gotten is around $170m - $190m if I'm correct wit this figures, but now they succeed to ask for more higher figures until it reached at $200m.

Lots of tension happened and to many speculation about possible generational wealth that he might missed.

But now they made everything official and now Duren secure his future by signing such huge guaranteed contract on Pistons.

I don't think the Knicks have any shot at repeating.  I'm also not sure the different champions thing is really good for the NBA.  People don't complain about the Michael Jordan era as not having enough champions.  I personally like to see greatness and what I'm seeing in the league now is teams being added and not enough talent to go around.  Most of the superstars in the league are over the age of 35.  There is a serious lack of talent at the highest level and spreading it around more isn't going to be great for the league in my opinion.  Although, it may force someone to rise to a new level to dominate the league with championships.

Just for context, the last time that we saw a team winning back-to-back title was the 2017-2018 Golden State Warriors. Since then, we've seen different teams winning the title year after year.

I personally don't like the team expansion because of the lack of superstars, but on the flip side, this might open up to those players out there who has the skill and the capability to be an all-star, but it's just that they aren't being given enough minutes to show it. As for most of superstars being age 35, that might be true, but we're already seeing some younger players flourish in the league already. SGA is one, Wemby is 2, Brunson is 3, and so on and so forth.

I don't see any serious lack of talent at all in the league. Like what I said, there are many players who are being developed and some are now flourishing on their own teams. I also have nothing against these players being spread around because more superstars being spread = more competition around the league especially during the playoffs.

Well, not every agent can be called an expert in this field. Remember the case with Schroder, when, as he claimed, his agents advised him to turn down a major contract with the Lakers. As you know, this left Schroder with nothing, which certainly casts more doubt on his agents' competence, and, to be honest, I think there are quite a few agents like that in the NBA.

Good thing the Pistons sign him for $200M, but he should not be injured for the remaining season were he needs to play with the pistons because once those injury are long term, they will trade him for sure, even if im the one who can trade him i will, because of the big money over his head, getting players is easy.
Never gamble too much on your value you need to read the table and the room because they might need you today, but who knows what will happen next.
